As the party stands debating the use of the hang-gliders, Matteo feels a blade digging into his back as yet another Red Mantis pops out of invisibility behind the arcanist!

Surprise!

+1 sawtooth saber: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 14 + 2 = 19

Initiative:

1. Faldoc and Kynrac
2. Red Mantis
3. Alden, Matteo, Panfalcon, and Jarlgur

Faldoc and Kynrac are up!

Kynrac also would have gotten a surprise round action before the Red Mantis went. Without knowing he was there, I was guessing whatever you do wouldn't have been able to block his attack though.

Silver Crusade

Naala can also always act in the surprise round (thanks to her Bodyguard archetype), but unfortunately she wasn't adjacent to Matteo to give him a boost to AC against that attack. She will wait for Alden's command now.

Grand Lodge

Venture-Captain Kynrac Chronarion | Male Elf Oracle (Ancient Lorekeeper) 17 | HP 190/190 | AC:35 T:15 FF:32 CMD:27 (+1 AC +1 FF/surp.) | F+15 R+13 (evasion) W+15 (+2 ench, +11 mind-aff; +1 FF/surp.) | Init +6 (roll 3 times take best, always act in surprise round) | Perception +21 (darkvision) |

If I act before the Red Mantis, I'll try to blind it with a glitterdust during the surprise round (Will DC 18 negates the blinding effect) to try and give him 50% miss chance on his surprise attack. In fact, that's what I'll do during my surprise round regardless of whether I act first or not.

Reacting faster than time itself, the Ancient Lorekeeper conjures golden particles on the hidden assassin, revealing it! (and possibly blinding it too). Then he moves back thanks to his magical sandals.

Before the assassin has the time to strike a second time, the elf bestows Irori's blessing of fervor on his companions.

Don't forget to pick one of the following bonuses each turn!
- Increase its speed by 30 feet.
- Stand up as a swift action without provoking an attack of opportunity.
- Make one extra attack as part of a full attack action, using its highest base attack bonus.
- Gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls and a +2 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves.
- Cast a single spell of 2nd level or lower as if it were an enlarged, extended, silent, or still spell.

For this round, Kynrac picks +2 AC/Ref/attack rolls.

Since the attack on Matteo was the action that started the surprise round, your glitterdust wouldn't hit him until after his attack, so the blinded condition would come after that attack, unfortunately. But hopefully he'll be blinded now! :-D

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

@Kynrac:
The tricky thing is you act in the surprise round but you act before he attacked so he wasn't visible yet and no one made the Perception to locate him. So your spidey-senses were tingling but you probably wouldn't have known where to drop the glitterdust. So I'll just switch your actions around so that you cast blessings of fervor in the surprise and glitterdust in normal rounds.

@Matteo: stabilizing is a Con check, not a Fort save. DC 10 + amount you are negative. Or DC 10 but you take a penalty to the roll the amount you are negative. Same either way.

Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

Kynrac senses something afoot and gives the party a blessing of fervor! Seconds later the Red Mantis attacks out invisibility and Kynrac covers the man in glitter. Faldoc then turns the glittery assassin into a pincushion.

The Mantis steps over to Jarlgur and lashes out once again!

"I would like to know who this A.H. is, and why there is - or so it seems - internal strife within your group. I must admit that I'm personally interested in knowing what your motives are to lead the Shadow Lodge." says Kynrac bluntly. He remains calm, but behind this cold attitude lies a ruthless person - or maybe just one of the Decemvirate's faithful lapdogs.

Sorry about Kynrac being so blunt, but he's Grand Lodge through and through, so he can't maintain pretenses when the leader of the group who has been harassing the Society for too long is in front of him.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Torch sighs, "Fine then. . . the beginning. In my youth I was actually a Pathfinder, you may be surprised to hear. Decades ago, before Osirion’s borders were opened to exploration, I was sent on a mission for the Decemvirate as a member of the adventuring group known as the Scarab Seekers. During the mission, my companions were killed and I was critically injured by a deadly curse," he gestures to his famed burn scars that will not heal. "However, rather than extract and help me, the Decemvirate instead disavowed that I was even a member of their Society. The Decemvirate could not afford to have Osirion’s royal family discover that the Pathfinders had violated Osirion’s borders and raided its historical birthright."

"Outraged, I escaped Osirion on my own, unaided. I built my own network of spies and agents, gradually becoming one of Absalom’s most influential
information brokers. In the years that followed, through my network, I gradually came to discover that there were actually many within the Pathfinder Society who, like me, were secretly offended by the callous disregard the Decemvirate continually demonstrated for ordinary Pathfinders, even those who risked their lives again and again in their work for the Society. I reached out to them."

"Before I knew it, I had founded a secret cell within the Pathfinders, one dedicated to standing up for its members by covertly opposing the high-handed leadership of the Decemvirate."

"My Shadow Lodge, however, quickly took on a life of its own. It began to attract the ambitious and the greedy. The initiative finally flew out of control when several ambitious and unsavory members took it upon themselves to openly strike a blow at the Pathfinder Society."

"I tried to reign in the Shadow Lodge, but quickly found I was too late. The leader of the internal rebellion, a mysterious person called the Spider, opposed me. The true identity of the Spider is a mystery that even I could not unravel, a fact that infuriates me still. By this time, the Spider was hell bent on accomplishing a complete coup of the Pathfinder Society and frustrated by my unwillingness to act. The Spider threatened that I continued to stand in the way of progress, I would be eliminated."

"When I first suspected that the Spider had hired the Red Mantis to assassinate me, I approached the Decemvirate with an olive branch, hoping we could help each other with our now mutual problem. I offered to bring the Shadow Lodge agents loyal to me back into the Society’s fold in exchange for protection. The Decemvirate likewise acknowledged that the Shadow agents had a point, and promised to do more to honor the sacrifice that common Pathfinders make for the betterment of the organization as a whole. I had asked, however, that the Decemvirate not tell the adventurers they sent to help me about my history, for fear that their enthusiasm for the task of protecting me would be compromised."

"But now you know the story and I hope that sheds some light on why I have done what I have done. Do you still think it such a terrible thing, Kynrac, that I am a member of the Shadow Lodge? Your Decemvirate think not."

As Torch finishes his soliloquy, the flame from the candle sputters out.

The elf's face remains blank, though subtle hints would suggest he's in a deep state of inner turmoil. Yet words slowly come out of his pursed lips. "I see. I thank you for your being straightforward and revealing this to us. Whatever this shows about the Decemvirate..."

How could they? Ambrus is always so keen on never letting a fellow agent behind. I'll have to think this through, but not now. Later.

"... is irrelevant for now, we have to focus on the task at hand. For what it's worth, I am truly sorry for what happened to you, and I promise not to divulge your secret to anyone."

Turning to his companions as well as Torch, he concludes "What now?"

GM:
Oh, revelations! I actually didn't know this at all (except the Scarab seeker part since I'm GMing Destiny of the Sands trilogy), and it's funny that it should be my "Grand Lodge forever" character that plays this scenario. This opens up interesting roleplaying opportunities, especially at the time a free faction change is available!

Kynrac reacts quickly once again, moves next to Torch and whispers "A warding spell to protect you.". Then he casts sanctuary on the scarred man.

Kynrac can take a move and a standard action in his surprise rounds thanks to his sandals of quick reaction. Not sure about the DC for the spell, but it should be in my profile (posting from my phone).

Jalrgur notices Matteo lying on the floor and moves over to the man. "When did he fall?" He asks, as he begins intoning a short prayer and placing his hand on the arcanist's chest.

After the arcanist regains consciousness, he groups the party together in case there are any other unnoticed wounds, then channels healing to the entire party.

"Ah, yes, thank you. I must have grown weary from all that walking..." Matteo mumbles.

As for what torch says... "I would disavow the Society, just as fast as they would disavow me in such a situation. It is what is best for our survival."

When combat begins...

Matteo begins to weave his fingers in intricate arcane gestures as he points lazily at the revealed assassin. He puts a little extra into the spell, hoping to knock the enemy to the ground.

"How rude of you to interrupt..."

With a healthy set of blows, arrows, and spells from the party the assailant quickly goes down!

Out of combat!

With the Red Mantis defeated, the threat to Grandmaster Torch is no more. . . at least for the moment.

But now that you know the truth behind the origin of the Shadow Lodge, you will certainly have a lot to consider. For now, Venture-Captain Shevala and the Decemvirate are happy that you have kept Grandmaster Torch alive long enough for him to deliver the return of their wayward members back into the Pathfinder Society’s main body.

And that's it! I'll be gone all day but I'll try to get chronicles out tonight or tomorrow! Thanks everybody!
