Close!

Alright! Now we've got ourselves a party!
“Rachikan has been discovered!” exclaims Venture-Captain Adril Hestram as he peers up from a collection of ragged maps, dusty tomes, and tarnished coins from behind a massive desk within the Grand Lodge in the heart of Absalom. His excitement quickly fades and Adril gestures toward an elderly man sitting by the hearth. “May I introduce a former Pathfinder and respected friend, Benton Grone. This gentleman has suffered a great loss to bring a grand discovery to us and he has agreed to trade all rights to his claim of locating lost Rachikan in return for locating his missing nephew. Go with him and make haste; he has agreed to guide you to the Pillars of Anferita in Cheliax.”
Seven days at sea end at a view of the Pillars of Anferita bursting from the Chelaxian coastline, waves crashing against their rocky flanks. The central pillar’s curves, flora, and shape are perfectly represented on the discolored Jistka coins Adril sent along with the expedition. As sailors from the hired vessel row toward the central column, a second rowboat in tow, Benton Grone breaks his silence.
“It’s got to be here; the coin says so. Look at the picture on the back: A temple-foundry high atop this pillar awaits to be discovered. If old Rachikan of the Jistka Imperium is inside, then my nephew must reside there as well. Please hurry—find my poor Eldis.”
As the sailors row away from the pillars, taking Benton Grone with them but leaving behind a rowboat to return to the waiting ship, the waves slowly begin to push higher up the rocky harbor, signaling the beginnings of high tide. An unguarded, well-maintained rope stretches up the cliff, beckoning to the plateau high above.
Weiman Callbazzern-Walk |
A halfling of slightly below average stature for his race sits in this meeting. His hair is a light brown, and his eyes are blue. He wears blue breeches, as well as an open blue vest with gold trimming and a multicoloured butterfly embroidered on the back. Sheathed overtop it in a partial scabbard is a shortsword with part of the sheathe missing, as if to display the three notches in the blade. He carries a backpack that looks like it was built for an individual one-and-a-half-times bigger than him, as well as new-looking burlap bag.
After his pun-filled romp with a certain Dragon Disciple (of which Weiman doesn't even remember the details), he springs to meet the not-oft-mentioned Venture-Captain Hestrum. "What does your nephew look like, Mr. Grone?"
If there's 7 days, does that mean I can Lore Master at all of them for 29? If not, here's History and Lore Mastering Local.
Kn History: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Kn Local: 20 + 9 = 29
Diplomacy (aiding next diplo roll): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 Adds +4 to the next roller.
Lindum Coralus |
A halfling, frail and small even by halfling standards, watches as the sailors row away. His eyes are hazel and his hair is (strangely for a halfling) almost platinum blonde. His armour and shield are made from fine mithral, and an unholy symbol of Asmodeous hangs proudly around his neck. His attire is otherwise very fine.
Let's see what Lindum can uncover over the week.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (14) + 23 = 37 (Assistance roll included, thanks Weiman)
The halfling turns to his companions, mostly ignoring Benton Grome as he prepares to leave. "My friends, it seems we may be in a race against time... Or more specifically, the Aspis Consortium. From my schmoozing, I have uncovered that our competitors have been funding slaves and mining equipment through a gentlemen named Haliduris Karn. These resources have been sent here, to the Pillars of Anferita.
Be on your guard my fellows." He says with a rakish grin.
EndlessForms |
Sure, you can Lore Master all of them. Also, feel free to make retroactive purchases before you left on the ship.
"Oh, he's a young boy, bright brown eyes full of excitement." Grone gives you a detailed description of Eldis.
Weiman Callbazzern-Walk |
While adressing the group, Weiman will chime in. "Oh, yeah, by the way; Jistkan's were wizards at math. Be prepared for golems and worse, Word Problems with Fill-in-the-blank answers! Ha!"
Bruxo Machi |
Eyeing the rope with some contempt is a human more than twice the height of the two halflings, clad in simple leather- and fur-edged clothing. While his ruddy skin and bronze-colored hair declare his Shoanti blood, he is uncommonly thin for those of his heritage, and the traditional Shoanti braid is barely shoulder-length instead of falling down his back. Equally odd is the tiny lizard-like creature, about the size of a cat, sleeping lazily just inside his collar.
Is this truly how we're expected to approach? Ludicrous.
Kyra, PreGen Cleric of Sarenrae |
Into Cheliax! What have you gotten yourself into? And look how gaut some of these people look, these are Pathfinders? I'll have my work cut out for me it seems.
I do not see another way. Let's hope a word problem is not waiting on the other end of that rope.
Weiman Callbazzern-Walk |
"Ha ha ha... math." Weiman states, looking up the cliff face. He will start up the rope (unless anyone else wants to go first), will T10 for 16. If the rope's knotted, he'll take the accelerated DC of (DC+5) at a 20 ft/round (Half his speed, double moves.)
As a preface, Weiman has the Trapspotter Rogue Talent and lists his perception in his header (which is getting reset from last scenario's effects.)
Valeros the Pregenerated |
A rugged-looking warrior in a well-made but battered breastplate stands on the mysterious shore, two swords slung at his hips and an irrepressible smile on his lips. Ragged dark hair frames a face sporting an interesting array of scars, and as he moves toward the rope dangling from above, his hands move as if of their own volition, checking the hilts of his blades, and pausing briefly to stroke the battered tankard that hangs from his belt.
Valeros surveys his companions as they variously joke about math and complain about the climb, then says, ”I think this looks like a fun start to things, myself. If you need a hand on the way up, Bruxo, I’m happy to lend it – though I haven’t known many Shoanti who’d shy away from such a task.”
Valeros will take 10 on the Climb check for a 23. Can Aid any who might need help with the climb.
Raphael Hernan 0430 |
Raphael will take 10 also (for a 10)
Well, it beats being soaked with spray down here. And he heads up the rope.
I think we should space ourselves, unless it is obvious that the rope can take all of our weight
EndlessForms |
The rope is not knotted. You can take 10 (for now!). Just let me know the order you guys are ascending. Weiman volunteered to go first. The rope can clearly support everyone at once. If you want to be X feet apart, let me know.
Valeros the Pregenerated |
Valeros will go last, in case it gets more difficult and someone slips. I think he's got the best chance of grabbing a falling halfling. If we're sure the rope will hold us all, let's go with 5 feet apart, so we can help each other if needed.
Bruxo Machi |
Paizo ate my post. Or something did. Grr.
Bruxo looks dubiously at the rope again, then up at the destination.
I will make another way, thank you. he says, activating his Flight hex and flying to the top.
Seven minutes of flight that must be spent in one-minute increments. Please let me know how much Bruxo uses.
Lindum Coralus |
Lindum eyes the rope with annoyance.
"Physical activity... Ugh."
Lindum casts Guidance on Kyra (and himself when he climbs up)
He looks about the air for a moment.
"Slip! Where are you? Get up to the top of the rope and do some scouting. Now!"
A tiny creature with red horns and a wicked looking barbed tail appears from thin air.
Slip the Imp |
"As you command." it replies with a bow. Then promptly turns invisible again.
The little creature flies to the top of the rope with remarkable speed, hovering at the top. (fly speed 50ft: Perfect)
It glances about, on the lookout for anything of interest.
(Slip has +13 perception and Detect evil, Detect magic and Detect good active at all times)
EDIT: Just added in that Slip turns invisible when scouting. It's just good sense. :)
EndlessForms |
Hm. Didn't except an invisible scouting imp and a flying witch. That changes things. And makes this combat a lot more tolerable.
Before the party begins to ascend the rope, Slip the Imp flies up the cliff face and is startled to find something waiting on top. It appears as a fallen angelic warrior with black wings and wielding a longbow.
Being Tiny and invisible I don't think it can notice Slip so I won't make you roll Stealth yet. Slip can fly back down and tell everyone what he sees before you begin the ascent.
Everyone stands about in the boat and waits for the Imp's report.
Lindum Coralus |
No need for the return trip as Slip has telepathy 50ft.
Lindum's Knowledge(Planes): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15. Damn, that's embarrassing.
"We may have trouble friends... a winged archer is up there and I doubt that she is friendly. While we are climbing we will make most tempting targets. Perhaps an alternate method of ascension is in order?"
Damn, wish I'd prepared more than one 'Air Walk' now/
Raphael Hernan 0430 |
I can go up and distract it until the rest can get up there. Raphael says with a knowing smile.
Raphael then jumps into the air and flies up the cliff.
hp 66
no conditions
in Crane Stance
If needed, initiative 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Bruxo Machi |
This fallen angel your imp describes...it sounds like an Erinyes devil. If so, it will resist damage that is not aligned to the forces of good. Judge yourself accordingly.
Bruxo will cast mage armor on himself and then follow behind Raphael, trying to let the devil take its shots at the swordsman, who is much better equipped to handle it.
Lindum Coralus |
Lindum's smile fades at Bruxo's news.
"I feared as much."
A moment of regret passed over his face.
Cast Air Walk and activate Copycat ability (trickery domain). Start hustling up the steps next round.
Initiative (which I'll bet will be a 6): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
EDIT: Oh good, Dice roller seems to be functioning again.
Valeros the Pregenerated |
As Raphael jumps into the air, Valeros calls out to him, "Any chance of a lift, friend? Two of us can distract her even better than one! Besides, I'd like a look at this exotic lass before we cut her to pieces."
If he doesn't get a ride up, Val will drink his potion of fly and join the party that way. If Kyra needs a lift, Val will take her up to the top.
Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
EndlessForms |
The cliff is higher than 50'. It is 200' tall.
Thanks for the initiative rolls. In the future when you don't know combat is coming I'll roll them for you.
So it sounds like everyone but Kyra and Weiman are flying up there, with the possibility that Valeros is giving Kyra a piggy-back ride to the top.
I'm going to wait to see how Kyra and Weiman want to get up before starting combat. The devil doesn't start firing right away anyways. Also, they don't provide a map for this so I'll have to work something out, especially with the vertical combat going on.
Weiman Callbazzern-Walk |
If I'm reading the situation right, I'd recommend doing a cross-section, with the leftmost border being the rope and a depth-tracker on the side, or something. Also, I'm A-OK climbing; I can't be flatfooted via Uncanny Dodge, IIRC.
Weiman Callbazzern-Walk |
Lunchtime excess leads to mapmaking theorycraft; Perhaps like so?
EndlessForms |
I just whipped up something simple on Roll20 as a side view, since vertical is the most important dimension here. If everyone makes it to the top I can create a map of the plateau.
So Weiman is climbing up the rope. It's only a DC 5 climb check, but you have to take all the penalties if you try to do anything else (cast, use a weapon, etc).
Weiman begins climbing the rope while the rest of the party begins flying to the top of the cliff. When the flying party gets just over halfway up the cliff (two rounds of flying, 120' and 40' of climbing for Weiman), the Erinyes pops out over the cliff, bow in hand.
Weiman: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Kyra: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Valeros: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Lindum: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Bruxo: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Raphael: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Erinyes: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Initiative:
1. Valeros
2. Erinyes Devil
3. Raphael, Kyra, Weiman, Bruxo, and Lindum
Valeros is up!
Valeros the Pregenerated |
When he sees the erinyes devil appear over the edge of the cliff, Valeros curls himself around Kyra as a protective shield and continues to fly upward as quickly as he’s able, carrying the cleric along.
As they fly, he says to Kyra, ”Thanks for the blessing of Sarenrae down there. Every little bit helps, eh? Any chance Sarenrae’s got something to help me hurt this thing a bit more, since Bruxo said it can resist damage?”
Not much I can do from here, so I’ll continue moving upward as fast as I can.
Kyra, PreGen Cleric of Sarenrae |
Perhaps use could use extra strength to combat this creature? I would think the added power to your strikes would be beneficial.
If I can cast while being carried, I will cast Bull's Strength on my vehicle. If not I will wait until we land on firm soil. Of course, if I get a better suggestion from the spells we are to replace the Cures with, we could use it instead. I already used Bless.
EndlessForms |
Whoops, just realized I forgot to switch the player map over to the cliff. You guys can see it now. Valeros, with your double move you can get right next to it. I moved you up top.
Valeros continues his flying ascent towards the devil. The devil flies back and readies her longbow at Valeros.
+1 flaming composite longbow rapid shot: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
+1 flaming composite longbow rapid shot: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (14) + 14 = 28
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
+1 flaming composite longbow rapid shot: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
fire damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Kyra then infuses Valeros with a spell and his muscles begin to bulge.
Initiative:
1. Valeros
2. Erinyes Devil
3. Raphael, Kyra, Weiman, Bruxo, and Lindum
Valeros, Raphael, Weiman, Bruxo, and Lindum are up!
Raphael Hernan 0430 |
If the Erinyes is in charge range, I will charge it. If not, then I will double move closer.
Charge attack 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (3) + 18 = 21
damage 1d8 + 21 ⇒ (6) + 21 = 27
AC=32
hp=66
charged, fighting defensively, Crane Stance
would be nice to roll higher than a five
Lindum Coralus |
Nervous of the winged archer's arrow, Lindum casts a spell on himself before continuing the ascent.
Casts Shield of Faith (+3 deflection AC). AC is now 25.
He continues walking up but also yells up to his imp.
"Slip! Relieve the fallen angel of her weapon and bring her under dominance! Now!"
Slip the Imp |
Still in hiding, Slip heeds the command of its master nervously. Focusing its energies, it wordlessly casts a spell at the winged devil.
Spell-Like ability - Suggestion [Will save DC 15 negate].
Command: Drop your bow and surrender.
EndlessForms |
I haven't been accounting for the fact that I think you can only ascend straight up at half-speed. Oh well, I'm not going to go back and redo it now. Raphael, you can charge.
Raphael charges up at the devil but is unable to connect. Lindum casts a protective spell on himself while his imp tries to [i]suggest the erinyes.
SR: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Surprisingly, the erinyes drops its bow, which begins to fall down towards the water. The erinyes slowly puts its hands up.
Initiative:
1. Valeros
2. Erinyes Devil
3. Raphael, Kyra, Weiman, Bruxo, and Lindum
Weiman, Bruxo, and Valeros are up!
Although if you guys just want to lead the erinyes devil to the cliff and apprehend it, I'll let combat end here.
