And thus did the clouds upon up on that day. And thus did the glorious rays of sunshine shine through upon the four assembled players. And thus did the Almighty GM speak to the players in an impressive resounding and soothing baritone necessarily reserved for deities.

"Lo! Hearken upon these words: Thou shalt undergo a quest! A quest whereby strife and danger will be pretended at through imaginary avatars! And lo, eyes may be strained and nanocalories burnt while typing post after post during this journey, but do no falter in your step! For the Almighty GM will always be here watching your posts and double-checking minute details in the holy Book of Bulmahn et al."

"And hear these last words from me, my humble players! For I lay upon you all a quest: to have fun and not get overly upset if I accidentally kill your imaginary avatar. For lo, this functions as a modified lesser geas effect, such that your avatar gains a +2 fun bonus to a single ability score of your choice as long as the player is having fun but the avatar suffers a cumulative -2 sad penalty to all abilities should the player cease to have fun."

And thus did the four characters become slightly stronger, more dextrous, hardier, more intelligent, wiser, and more charismatic than their [groan] 15-point buy originally allowed. And thus was the Almighty-ness of the GM proved on that day when He demonstrated to his players that he was not an ass for making them use a 15-point buy system.

And thus did the campaign commence.

You are in the town of Sandpoint where there are reports that the Licktoad goblins of Brinestump Marsh have grown unusually aggressive. The reason for this uncharacteristic bravery seems clear-the goblins have somehow managed to arm themselves with what appears to be a considerable supply of fireworks. The problem stems not so much from the additional "firepower" these fireworks provide as from the inflated sense of ego and power that the devices have given the goblins-the fireworks have made them dangerously brave.

Several merchant caravans and travelers have been attacked so far, and according to the victims, the damage caused by horses panicking at the sight and sound of exploding pyrotechnics is almost as destructive as the goblin attacks themselves. With the last few attacks resulting in severe injuries to three unfortunate travelers, the problem has escalated form an annoyance to a threat. However, as none of the attacks have yet inconvenienced Magnimar (only Sandpointers and other Lost Coasters have been hit so far), the city has been slow to react. Unwilling to idly sit by and wait for the goblin problem to escalate to actual deaths on the Lost Coast Road in order to attract Magnimar's attention, Sandpoint's leaders have put out the call for goblin exterminators.

The Sandpoint city watch have increased their presence along the Lost Coast Road but they simply can't afford to send patrols into the trackless expanse of Brinestump. A few adventurers have already made the attempt into Brinestump Marsh but have not been heard of for 3 days. Just last night another round of colorful explosions burst over the wetlands south of Sandpoint. The goblins are doubtless readying a new attack!

As such, Sheriff Belor Hemlock has restored Sandpoint's old "goblin bounty". The town of Sandpoint will pay 10 gp for every relatively fresh goblin ear delived to the town hall-with an additional reward of 300 gp for the group who can bring in the head of the Licktoads' leader, Chief Gutwad.

You've heard word that several of your friends in Sandpoint have decided to take up the cause. The interested parties have agreed to meet up at the Rusty Dragon tavern to discuss their plans.

Zachary:
You know that Brinestump Marsh may not be as large as the Mushfens farther to the south, but the swamp is dense and tangled. It's easy to get lost in the place. No one's made a really detailed map of Brinestump-there's been no need, since there's not much of value within.

Terflynn:
You know that if anyone knows their way around in the marsh, it'd be that old eccentric halfling Walthus Proudstump, the self-appointed "warden" of the swamp.

Jennix:
Someone else might mention Walthus Proudstump eventually. You know that a fishing trail leads from the Lost Coast Road directly to Walthus's shack in the swamp.

Miso:
Someone else might mention Walthus Proudstump eventually. You know that he lives somewhere out in the marsh and that most people avoid him not because he is unfriendly but because he rarely bathes and has several odd habits, including collecting snakes as pets.

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

So you've got some time in the Rusty Dragon to get to know each other. Sandpoint is a small town and it's likely that you characters know of each other already or may even be friends or acquaintances.

Male

Terflynn orders his trademark steaming cup of broth and stands at the end of the bar, doing his best to look inconspicuous. He waits to see if anyone else shows up, or if there was more to boasting than bronze.

Zachary is a young man in his very early twenties. He stands just under six feet tall with a very athletic build, short cropped brown hair and green eyes. Although his most prominent feature is the small jagged scar above his right eye. He carries an assortment of weapons, with a finely made bow slung on his back. Dressing in earthly green/brown hues, he looks like he would be more at home anywhere in the forest over civilization.

"Less than I thought have shown up, I hope they are capable, this goblin threat is not child's play."
Zachary thinks to himself as he amicably approaches the group gathered at the Rusty Dragon.
"Greetings. My name is Zachary Chase, but you can all just call me Zack. I am sure you have heard about the little green monsters troubling our town already, so I won't bore you with the details. It has been requested that I guide you all out into the marsh so we can efficiently put down this threat. Everyone up for a quick drink before we head out to keep us warm on the road?"

Male

Surprisingly short for an elf, Terflynn wears dark brown cotton robes and a heavy hood shadows his face. What can be seen betrays a weathered and age-weary visage with stern, unfriendly features. His tone is harsh for an elf, and his tendency to stand slightly too far away while addressing you expresses his "safety by distance" perspective. Though he does not otherwise seem especially dangerous, his longbow and quiver are difficult to overlook.

"I'm taken care of, thank you." Terflynn says, indicating his broth. "My name is Terflynn Ylorinnara. You might know me for my potions." he says, pulling out a potion and displaying the monogram. "I'm not generally concerned with such public affairs, but I have a definite interest in fireworks. And to be frank, those candles going off without warning have ruined more than one batch of potion." Terflynn takes a long drink before continuing. He then sets down his cup and pulls back his hood.

"So you are a guide, Mister Chase? Have you much experience in Brinestump?"

In from the late autumn rain comes Miso Jirogawa, a man of perhaps twenty summers, dressed as he usually is in simple grey furs and brown linen clothing. He stands some seventeen hands high and is solidly built — perhaps nine stone. Despite his youth, he has a calmness about him that is palpable.

He has been in Sandpoint before, though usually only stays a day or two; he always visits Sandpoint Cathedral and then comes to the Rusty Dragon for a bowl of Ameiko Kaijitsu's curry vegetable stew and a small cup of mead. He typically does not speak very often, though he is unfailingly polite and respectful when addressed.

Miso comes in and takes a seat by himself away from the hearth. He sets a stack of five silver coins on the table, which is promptly whisked away ans rewarded with a mug and a bowl.

Zack nods in acknowledgement of the elf's question and replies. "Yes, I have been in the area a few times. Usually on my own though. We will be going a bit farther in than I normally do this time, as this is more of an extermination mission than a reconnaissance one."

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Ameiko Kaijitsu, the well-known owner of the Rusty Dragon, comes into the room and passes out drinks to the assembled patrons. "Well, how are we today folks?" she asks Zachary and Terflynn. "I hear you've an interest in the Goblin Bounty, eh? Good for you! What I wouldn't give to get out in the wild, go someplace far away, and have an adventure! Don't get yourselves too hurt now. If you're looking for company I believe the Kellid man over there is in town for a bit and might be interested in joining you. I've seen him in here plenty of times before; quite the appreciative customer. He goes by Miso if I remember correctly." Ameiko points out the man sitting by himself to Zarchary and Terflynn.

"I've heard there are others in town interested as well. I'm sure you could all band together and route out those goblins quick enough. Surely it will be safer that way. Now let me get you some bread, on the house, so you can be nice and full before you head out tomorrow!" She gives Zachary and Terflynn a smile and heads into the back room.

A tall, ruggedly handsome man with curly locks and beard and an easy, genial smile that is reflected in his eyes, opens the door to the inn and enters with a swagger. He wears worn leathers and carries a rapier on his belt and a bow over his shoulder. As he passes, you notice he also carries a handaxe and small mace tucked into the back of his belt. In his pack, you notice the distinct outline of several heavy tomes weighing heavily on the pack. He seems to know just about everyone, by name at least, as he nods and hails all the patrons.

As Jennix enters the inn, he calls out. Barkeep! A tankard of your finest stout! He says as he pulls a coin out of his pouch and dances it across his knuckles, making it disappear and reappear before flipping it onto the bar. My sincerest apologies for the late arrival. He say smiling. My prior engagement took longer than I thought. I was instructing a young lady on the finer points of oration! He says with a sly wink. He takes a long pull from the ordered tankard and sets it down loudly, wiping the foam from his beard and mustache. So...when do we leave?

Sounds grand! So when are off? I think that trail takes us by old Walthus Proudstump's place. I've heard tell that a fishing trail leads from the Lost Coast Road directly to Walthus's shack in the swamp. Maybe we can stop in and get some information of the area. Jennix finishes downing his tankard, slamming it down on the bar, and giving the serbing girl a wink. Any special gear we ought to bring woodsman? Other than the normal goblin skinning kind? Jennix asks Zachary. As an afterthought he turns to the assembled party. I've seen you all around town and know your names, but I don't think we've been formally introduced. Name's Jennix...Jennix Caewyllien.

Male

"Terflynn. You already missed the first round of introductions." Terflynn states flatly and turns back to his free bread.

"I haven't been to his place, but if he ever travels out of the marsh it shouldn't be too hard to find."

Miso nods to Jennix and Terflynn. I have heard something of this Walthus Proudstump. He is unhygienic and collects snakes as pets. But if sun, and earth, and water refrain from judgment, who am I to conclude a man's worth?

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Sorry, wasn't sure if there was more RP to be had here. I'll move us along.

Brinestump Marsh is a relatively small region, but it's fantastically overgrown with vegetation. Given the frequent stretches of muddy bogs and snaking waterways, moving through the marsh is a tiring and frustrating procedure. The marsh itself is bounded on its southern edge by a cliff that rises an average of 40 feet from the wetlands below to the moors above. It extends just over 2 miles at its widest point. The wetland is a tangle of nettles, reeds, and other swamp plants often supplemented by larger vegetation-cypress, eucalyptus, oak, and willow trees mostly.

After a long and exhausting trek through the swamp, the group of adventurers finally arrives on a muddy trail leading up to a swampy lagoon where the open ocean is visible just beyond the shallow waters. An old two-story building, its walls soggy with moss and its roof sagging with age, sits on the lagoon's eastern shore.

As you approach the house, a small halfling covered in mud and smelling as if he hasn't bathed in many weeks opens the door. "Greetings! Can't say I get many visitors out here. Who might you be and what can I help you with?"

AC21/T15/FF17|CMD28||HP41[64]F+7|R+12|W+6||Int.+4|Percept.+16|SenMot.+5 Human Fighter(Lorewarden) 4 / Bard (Archaeologist) 3 / Ninja! 4

Jennix smiles wide and strides over to the halfling. Well met! My name is Jennix and these are my companions. We're headin' into the swamp to see about some goblins. Heard you lived this way and thought you might have some expert insight into the matter. Walthus I presume?

Miso walks a step or two behind Jennix as the latter greets the halfling. Jennix's confidence is evident, and Miso remains in the background until the dandy finishes before adding (with a graceful bow), it is an honor to meet you, sir Proudstump. You have a reputation as a knowledgeable man, which can often be worth more than treasure.

Diplomacy aid another: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

"Well then! Well then! Pleased to meet you all! Come right inside, let's have a chat!" The trail of smell following behind Walthus is almost overbearing but the party manages to make it inside his little hut without choking on the air. The inside is small and cramped, sized for a halfling, and various plants hang from the ceiling drying. Cages of snakes line one of the walls.

"Now, if you'd like to stay the night I'd happily cook you a meal and answer any questions you might have. Feel free to come back any time as you explore the swamp. I like to think I've carved out a safe little niche here among the wilderness."

The halfling pours drinks for everyone and takes a seat at the small table. "I can certainly tell you that the Licktoad goblins have been acting up lately; a bit braver than normal. I haven't quite figured out where they're getting their fireworks, although I've looked into it."

"Now, if you're actually going after these goblins, you should know that their village lies along the Old Fish Trail." Walthus gives you directions. "Now, if you think I could be of any help, I'll surely come along for the action!"

If you turn down Walthus' offer he instead grants you use of his cloak of resistance +1 and wishes you well.

Jennix smiles even wider if that is possible. No, no. You should stay here. He says to the halfling. That way, if we don't return in a timely manner, you can send a rescue party.

Male

"We'll handle it." Terflynn agrees.

Ok, first map is up. Apologies for the gridlines not lining up right and for the room names on the map. I don't have the PDF so I had to scan it and couldn't get it rotated/sized right to fit the gridlines like I normally do. Scanning it also meant I couldn't get rid of the room designations. I'll come up with a better solution for future maps.

The company follows Proudstump's directions to the Licktoad village. The front gate lies in shambles and the goblins seemingly have not bothered to repair it yet. Walking right into the village the party comes into what appears to be a pig pen, although all that remains in the muddy area are the mostly cremated bodies of a dozen goblins (H3). Several guard posts (H4) show numerous windows, affording excellent views of the surrounding area. Beyond (H8) the ruined remains of a burned hut lie strewn on the ground.

They seem completely empty, however. A hut off to the side (H5) that must have once held many goblins remains empty. The back corner of the village (H6) looks more like a garbage heap but is more likely the storage of the unorganized goblins.

The party continues to creep along through the eerily deserted village, wondering where all the goblins have gone. A large and prosperous (for a goblin) hut at the back of the village (H7) contains 23 gp and three skyrocket fireworks.

As the party enters a large set of double doors, they are greeted by several goblins cowering inside!
