Numeria has a long history of mystery and wonder buried under its rugged landscape, for on that one fateful night thousands of years ago, the Rain of Stars scarred the land. The fragmented remnants of a ship from beyond the stars fell from the sky, scattering strange technological ruins and deadly perils across the land. Today, these sites are feared by the barbaric tribes and coveted by the sinister spellcasters of the Technic League. Yet something worse than brutish berserker or super-science wizard has risen to power in these hidden technological halls. The Iron Gods are ready to make their presence known, and if they are not opposed by the region’s newest heroes, a scourge unlike any the Inner Sea has seen will arise! From small Numerian towns to strange technological ruins to the region’s infamous capital of Starfall—and perhaps beyond—the Iron Gods Adventure Path will take your heroes into places unlike any seen before in the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game!

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

The town of Torch has long enjoyed a singular claim to prosperity-a violet flame that burns atop Black Hill in the heart of the town. This flame burns incredibly hot, and while it's usually the size of a bonfire, several times a year the fires spew up into the heavens in a brilliant beam of purple violence. These eruptions are presaged by about an hour of soft rumbling, giving nearby smiths a chance to retreat before the fires can consume them.

At all other times, the violet energies allow for the smelting of all manner of skymetal. Torch is one of the only locations where skymetal can be worked with relative ease outside of Starfall, and its entire economy has risen around these purple flames, with traveling smiths coming from across Avistan to pay for the opportunity to work with them.

Of course, Torch needs all the visiting trade and coin it can gather, for while the town's distance from Starfall makes it inconvenient for the Technic League to maintain a permanent presence here, the taxes and tariffs it charges the Numerian town on a monthly basis are significant. The town prospers, but the bulk of its income does not belong to it.

Which is why, when the fires atop the hill suddenly go out, the town is in trouble.

Indeed, many strange things have been happening in Torch of late. Not only has the violet flame that has burned atop Black Hill for over a century gone out-leaving a strangely seeping pit of rubble and bubbling fluids where the town's livelihood once glowed day and night-but ever since Councilor Khonnir Baine, one of Torch's more powerful wizards and a well-like individual, when missing on his second expedition under Black Hill, the citizens of the nervous town have edged closer to outright panic.

With their hands full handling the growing refuse and waste problems in town now that their primary disposal method is gone (the flame), the town council is eager to find out what happened to Khonnir and rescue him-they've made public a reward of 4,000 gp to any group that can recover Khonnir's body; if he can be returned alive, they've promised to throw in the scroll of resurrection they've been holding on to in case they need to revive him.

Before Khonnir Baine disappeared, he had discovered the signs of unusual traffic on the banks of Weeping Pond, and shortly thereafter, the submerged tunnel that provides access to several heretofore unknown tunnels under Black Hill. His emergence from the caves with a deactivated semi-humanoid automaton sparked worries that something strange might be going on in the caverns, but when he failed to return from his second expedition a few days, those worries turned to outright fear. Several other adventuring parties have gone missing in the caves, and Torch finds itself running short on new volunteers.

And here we go! You can choose whether you know each other or not. The local bar, The Foundry Tavern, is not currently open, as Khonnir was its owner and his daughter has decided to close it until further notice. You could meet each other on the way to speaking with the Council to take on the job if you did not know each other previously. You've got a few things to look in to. In addition, please make a 1d20 roll.

End of the world!

The dwarf gently curses as he moved about his quiet shop and spent some time needlessly straightening his tools. He hung tongs and hammers up neatly up on the wall.

Alright, well maybe it wasn't as bad as those demons in the worldwound the crusading humans were always going on about. Still, it was bad. A dwarf robbed of his trade was no dwarf at all. And it really wasn't right; there was clients lined up around the block already, and he had only just finished his decade long journeymanship. By Torag's burning forges, how was he supposed to fill these orders for "adamantine bullets" and "djezet ring". With no Torch, no smithing. With no smithing, no metal suppliers. Just one long chain of things gone wrong.

Taran stops and glances over unfilled orders.

Mefindio Chezwezlian? Gnomes and their mad language. Who has a name like that. At least this Jorac fellow had a good, strong, dwarven sounding name. Too bad the lad was so keen on reinventing the world; humans had no respect for tradition.

Jaran grumbles, the deep sound scaring a bird roosting by in a nearby next. He squats down onto a small stool after removing his leather apron and places his hand chin upon his hands, looking defeated.

The universe just wouldn't stop there, by Droskar's droning. Now Khonnir had gone and vanished, and the wizard had been one of his best customers when it game to piece part orders and simple repairs. Bah! What else could go wrong this week?

The gnome passes a stoic glance over the bustling townspeople. Everyone on edge these days, the constant whispering and conjecture, it was enough to send the gnome packing. He glanced over at the others reading the reward sign. Seems like a solid enough bunch, I guess I'll throw my hat in with em'."

With an imperceptible kick of his heel and a clicking sound from the corner of his mouth, Mef eased his pony, Trigger, over the the other three. "Seems we have an adventure before us! I've seen you all around town, but let me formally introduce myself." The gnome says in an excited, buzzing voice. "Name's Sir Mefindio Chezwezlian III. Most people, who know me, just call me Chezwezl." He says, drawing the vowel sounds into long 'e's. "Looking as we might be together for a bit, you can call me that as well. I'm not one for formal names."

This simply won't do. I have run out of exercises.

Removing the eyeglass from his weary eye, the tanned human calmly puts it on a piece of parchment in front of him, half-covered with various calculations and measurements. Standing up from his metallic chair, the wizard undertakes the slow and methodical inventory of the pile of papers contained in the large ironbound chest next to his bed.

Nothing. Brigh help me, I'm screwed. With Master Khonnir missing, I can't possibly go further in my work. Unless...

Scratching his hirsute spiky hair, the human ponders his dramatic fate before leaving his house, taking long strides towards his friend Taran's forge.

"Taran, we have to do something. We can't remain here doing nothing while Master Khonnir may very well be on the brink of death. We have to try and save him. Besides, I've ran out of things to do."

Turning to the newcomer, he greets the gnome with a quizzical look on his face. "Well met, I suppose. My name is Jorac, apprentice to Master Khonnir. I seem to recall you, though I do not know where from."

Although Libri enjoyed the silence, the library had been quieter today than usual. Of the few who passed through the doors, all had a look of worry upon their faces. Or fear. Perhaps a mix. She wasn't adept at reading facial expressions. As closing time neared, a young male halfling scurried past with a tome on the history and teachings of Brigh. "Running is not permitted in the library," Libri announced to the boy. With an apologetic glance over his shoulder, the young halfing slowed his pace to a fast walk and exited.

I suppose several are turning to the teachings of their chosen diety in a time such as this. Libri had great control over her emotions- in truth, she often felt very little- but the abrupt disappearance of the flame atop Black Hill filled her with a slight disquiet. The flame has burned for so long- as long as I can recall in my time here. There must be a logical reason- but what? I rack my mind, and yet I have no answer. It is all quite...hmmm...mysterious. Yes, mysterious. The humanoids have these feelings, these "anxieties" and "worries"... could it be I am adopting their ways? Nonsense.

Libri closed the library doors for the day and began the long walk home. She often passed the same individuals on this route. Often encountered the same quickened paces and sideways glances. Libri was pretty enough, with near-white hair and bright blue eyes and not looking a day over twenty. However, she chose not to hide her android race, and of this others were wary. She was obstinate in not hiding her true form. Equality was perhaps the one thing in Golarion for which she was passionate. Well, that and gaining knowledge. Libri felt the glare of many eyes upon her this afternoon. She considered that perhaps because she was something of a mystery and the extinguished flame was a mystery, some were ignorant enough to fear that she had something to do with the event.

She continued on, gaze held forward, until she noticed a dwarf and man she recognized looking over a reward poster. Libri looked for a moment longer and realized for whom the reward was posted.

Khonnir Baine. He often visited the library in search of ancient tomes. He was one of the few who treated me with... respect.

"Good afternoon. I am interested in finding this man," Libri announced a bit too mechanically to the dwarf and human. A moment later, a gnome rode forward. "Yes. Hello to you too. Chezwezl. Good to meet you. I am Libri the Resolute. But my friends call me Libri.

"Well met, I am Jorac, apprentice to Master Khonnir - the councilman who disappeared after trying to investigate the cause for Torch's fires to become extinguished. He even came back once, with a mechanical creature of sorts - but the one he brought back was badly damaged. What people usually don't tell is that there is more than one of these creatures, and several of them have been crawling out of the ground and attacking people of Torch lately. I would like to investigate the matter myself, but I can't do it alone, for it my master failed, I shall surely fail too in the event of my going in by myself. Would you consider accompanying me in there and hopefully save my master? I hear the reward's worth it, if that's your thing." he concludes as he addresses all three people present and not just the android librarian.

He lets out a low whistle, then smiles widely. "Yep, count me in! Let's go find Khonnir, maybe he know about why the flame went out."

Torch's council consists of five men and women, but when you arrive at Town Hall you find only one of them, Dolga Freddert, is available. Bazlundi Otterbie is currently working with Joram Kyte to coordinate tending to Torch's growing problem of waste disposal, while Soceal Murgrave is at home nursing a splitting headache. And of course Khonnir Baine is missing.

Dolga Freddert, the town's oldest councilor-a dwarf who's life extends beyond that of the human's on the council-was presetn at Torch's founding over a century ago. Although she is well over 100 she remains alert and energetic. She immediately beams with relief once she realizes you are eager to head into the Black Hill Caves to see whether you can solve the town's problems and find Khonnir. "Ah! If I could but join you!" she says, motioning to a glowing adamantine warhammer in the corner that indicates her former life as an adventurer, "But instead I'm stuck here desk riding!"

Dolga continues, "Before you ask, I'll confirm that the reward for rescuing Khonnir is 4,000 gp plus the town's scroll of resurrection if he's brought back alive. There's also a separate 4,000 gp reward for any who can reignite the torch atop Black Hill, but for the moment the Council is most interested in bringing Khonnir back home."

After listening to your first question about the location, Dolga answers, "There's an underwater passage connecting them to the Weeping Pond. Khonnir noticed a large number of human footprints on the pond's banks-he was there the day the fires went out testing the water to ensure it hadn't suddenly grown more toxic-and he realized that a sizable group of people had entered the pond but had not emerged."

"Now once you're on the job, I'll give each of you a write that you can show to any of the merchants in town for a flat 20% discount on any gear you need to purchase-I wish I could offer a greater discount than that, but that's the best I can do. Further, Val, Khonnir's adopted daughter, may have already closed down her father's tavern The Foundry for the time being but she's told me that any group that's going into the caves to look for her father can use the tavern, free of charge, as a headquarters and a place to rest between forays."

"Finally, the entrance to the caves is flooded. You'll need to swim a bit to get to the caves. Joram Kyte has agreed to cast water breathing on any group to aid in entering the caves-free of charge, of course. You can find him at the temple of Brigh or up at Crowfeather Palace when you're ready to go."

The Flaxseed Pathfinder Lodge

Dolga sighs and shakes her head. "No, I'm sorry but I don't have permission to forward you any money." She thinks for a few seconds, "Although. . . nothing is stopping me from gifting it to you myself. Done then." She hands over a few coins for you to purchase two antitoxins on your way to the underwater tunnel.

To Jorac's question she answers, "I'm afraid we don't have much more insight. . . or at least, I don't have any. Khonnir would be the one to ask those questions. I'm guessing that disposing of them will come with the territory in looking for Khonnir and getting the flame reignited."

She continues, "Now what I can tell you is that the caves are known to be inhabited by several enormous vermin and other scavengers, along with some strange humanoids who had the ability to blend into the shadows of the cave walls, and a nest of gremlins-this is all according to Khonnir's testimony. Khonnir believed these inhabitants indicated a deeper connection in the caves to the Darklands, but of more immediate interest was his discovery of a wall of solid metal deep in the caves. A wall made of a skymetal alloy called glaucite. He said it was like the kind we mine from the hills and surrounding plains, but formed into a structure with doors. It was near one of these doors that Khonnir found the broken automaton that he brought back after his first expedition."

Libri stands on the shore as she watches each adventurer disappear one by one into the murky water. She clenches her teeth and balls her hands into fists, arms held straight at her sides, as she stands for a moment longer. An image of the monstrous snake from Crowfeather Lake flashes in her mind.

It's fine. I'm fine. Crowfeather Lake is a larger, separate body of water. Besides, other than a few eyewitnesses, there has been no evidence to validate that rumor.

Libri shakes the image from her head and moves into the pond.

Chezwezl watches with a hint of a grin on his face, then grabs a rope out of a saddlebag, ties it off on the saddle horn and tosses it toward his sinking companions. "If you can hear me, grab the rope!" Ha call outs.

"Taran, get em' to the rope." Mef says, then turns to grab the reins of Trigger, ready to have the pony pull out the waterlogged members of the party.

Taran crawls back in for the mechanical woman. This time he gets stuck; he doesn't panic but holds his breath until he can free himself.

The Fort save does count as poison.

The swim turns out to be more difficult than anticipated for some members of the party but thankfully Taran proves to be part-fish and everyone eventually arrives safely through the underwater tunnel.

Dampness hangs in the air of the cave, condensing into heavy moisture on the slick, stone walls. The calm, dark waters wind around to the east up north, along a stony, soot-scarred beach. A five-foot-high ledge sporting several stalagmites rises to the east, beyond which a low-ceilinged cave beckons.

Dark down here but I'm assuming you'll put up some sort of light source right away.

The water is only 2 feet deep in this cavern (difficult terrain).

As the party moves to cross the cavern floor, three glowing red beetles move out of the sand to attack the party!

As Taran starts to dry out he first looks around and makes sure his friends are well.

When all that is done, he'll pause and share his thoughts with the group.

"NE'ER AGAIN! THAT WAS UNNATURAL"

After the cathartic moment he pauses. "If we can find another way out, I reckon that would make me happy"

After donning his shield he'll walk besides Libri, struggling to keep pace. Once they come across the beetles we will move to strike the closest with an warhammer.

Jorac is fished out of the subterranean river, and showed a dismayed face when he's saved, a bit too proud for his own good.

"I suppose I should thank you for getting me out of this... misstep. Well, thank you. Let's not mention any of this to Master Khonnir when we find him, right?"

As they are under attack by the beetles, Jorac attempts to recall what he can about them, before throwing a globe of acid at one of them.

I believe vermin are nature but there's not much special about giant beetles.

Taran smacks one of the beetles whereas Chezwezl's lance glances off of the tough carapace. Jorac burns away one of their legs with a glob of acid.

"Thank you, Taran." Libri spits out a mouthful of water as the group enters the cave. "I feel unwell. No time it seems for that, however," as the fire beetles greet the newcomers. "It has been some time since I've used this sword... but no time for that either!"

Libri pulls out her cold iron longsword from its sheath and strikes at the nearest fire beetle, a bit uncertainly.
