The Veteran's Vault: MAP

Venture-Captain Hamshanks ignores all pretenses of pleasantries as he pounds into the meeting room in the Grand Lodge in Absalom. “Boy do I have a mission for you lot!”
He grunts loudly as he plops himself in an overstuffed chair and levels his glare at those assembled before him.
Ever been to Taldor? Well Cassimir to be specific, one of the Inersea’s greatest shipping ports and a town so ripe with politics and intrigue it makes Absalom look like church social. Cause that’s where you’re going, but don’t get any ideas about grand balls and shadowy espionage though, you’re going there to kill rats!
Hanshanks grins broadly as he leans back in his chair.
That’s right you’ll be slopping around the sewers of Cassimir, hunting rats. It’s a perfect job for a bunch of green-bloods like yourselves. Now, what are you waiting for you’ve got a ship to catch, and if I were you I’d rushing out to buying some waterproof boots!
After a moment the large Venture-Captain stops laughing enough to catch his breath.

The lithe Taldoran swordman smiles at the mention of Cassimir. The expression quickly fades, however, when Venture-Captain Hamshanks starts talking about rats. Quioxti's thoughts drifted briefly to his receint excursion into Absolom's Puddles District. It would be another month still before he would be able to contact in supplier Cheliax to replace the pair of fine silk stocking that were ruined by the district's abundance of fouled water.

"Rats, sir? Quioxti asked as the Vaneture-Captain caught his breath, "I'm quite sure the appropraite guild in Cassimir is capable of skewering a few mangy rats."

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

Hamshanks smiles at the swordsman, looking him over. Still grinning he leans forward,
Well according to Venture-Captain Themis these are magic rats or some such nonsense. Big and mean they are! The beefy man makes a comical rat like face at the party and once again starts laughing heartily.
The good Captain has gotten it into her head that there is some "Ancient Artifact" beneath Cassomir make the rats all viscous. If you ask me a mouse probably spooked her when she went to get something from the kitchen and now she's hell bent on eradicating all the little critters. But rules are rules and if there’s a chance for the society to get its hands on an artifact we gotta try, right? I'm just glad it’s you lot going on this goose chase and not me!

Perhaps the most disheveled of the assembled group, Domitian looks as though it may well have been weeks since his last bath, yet still bears an air of refinement despite appearances.

"Well, as ridiculous as the premise may sound, I'll not turn down an opportunity to get back home on the Society's gold," the rogue winks. "We'll deal with the rats, investigate this supposed artifact, and then have time for shopping and wine afterwards, no? I like the sound of this assignment already!"

Thaddeus is a young, fresh-faced half-elf, dressed in an immaculately kept Courtier's Outfit, in the latest style from Kaer Maga. He periodically sips a mildly alcoholic brew from a clay mug, which never seems to become empty.

Thaddeus grins at Domitian.

"Indeed! It has been far too long since I have been back in Taldor, and I would certainly not mind a free trip there, and the opportunity to catch-up on the latest fashions. Absalom is a nice place to visit, but the taverns here leave a little to be desired. Why, the last time I was in Cassomir, I remember that I went on such a bender down at the docks that I..."

His voice trails off.

"...but perhaps that is a story for another time. How about we say that whomever kills the most 'rats' gets free drinks for the night afterward?"

-When you are as old as me you won't enroll in stupid games, child. -this phrase seems to be the reject of the old man at the "free drink" proposal.

-Killing some rats is a fair price for the knowledge that artifact can bring us all. And the stink of the sewers... well... when your art forces you to deal with the death a day after another, the stink is not a problem for you anymore.

The old man walks slowly to the door, leaning visibly in his staff.

-Come on. Maybe you have a lot of time to waste. At my age you don't have a single second.

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

As Domitian and Thaddeus start to show excitement at their assignment Hamshanks nods, and grins at the pathfinders approvingly. It seems as if he is about to speak when his words and mirth are cut short by Damian's remarks. As the old man walks towards the door the Venture-Captain sputters awkwardly, like a guilty school boy, as he rifles through some items on the desk before finding a small satchel.
Well, um yeah... Ah here are your papers, and uh the ship is leaving at uh dusk so you have a couple hours to pack or um... Well good luck.

Was waiting for Ben to post an intro but we can work that in latter.

Solomon arrives at the doorway, "My apologies, Captain. I was unavoidably detained." He crosses the room in several fluid strides and takes the satchel, "These are the details of our mission, then?" He gives a deferring nod of his shaved head, "I'm certain they will make excellent reading on the vessel." With a subtle smile and a small bow, the Osirian acknowledges the other Pathfinders in the room, "I am ready to depart when you are."

Sorry for the delay, an unexpected double shift left me out of commission today. Shouldn't be an issue going forward.

Thaddeus shrugs his shoulders, and rolls his eyes once the venerable human has left.

"Ah well. I am sure that we will manage to have an interesting time, even with him around."

He then accepts his papers from the VC, and turns a broad grin on Domitian.

"Well, we have a few hours to kill before our ship departs. I just need to grab my things from my footlocker in the dorm, and then I am ready to go. What say you to kicking our heels back for a few hours in the taverns of Absalom, before we need to set sail...?"

Dark Archive

Male Human Magus 3

Quioxti starred at the door for several moments after Damian had left the room. Wheels were clearing turning in his head. Snapping himself back to the immediate situation, he turned to face his fellow Taldorans, "As splendid as that sounds, I'm afraid I'll have to take a rain check. I'm afraid there's a bit of business I must conclude before our ship sets sail. Never fear though, I'm sure we'll have the opportunity for a drink or three once we've reached the docks of Cassimir."

He nods acknowledgements to Soloman and, with a flourish, bows to their Venture-Captain before making for the door.

Taldor:

With a few moments to spare before departure Thaddeus "drags" Quioxti and Domitian into a nearby pub for one last tast of Absalom. Pushing through the crowd of sailors and longshoremen you finely make your way to the bar. The barkeep turns to take your order when he stops dead in his tracks as he stares at the three of you dumbfounded.
Well if I an't a hagfish! You boys head'n to Taldor an't yeah? Not waiting for you to answer he reaches a filthy hand into his even more disgusting apron, fishes out a envelope and slaps it on the table.
Bout an hour past midday this snooty chap comes in here and tells me to deliver this here letter. He says to me that three dandy's such as himself would be stopping in at dusk, on their way to catch a ship to Taldor. Well I bout ripped a seem! I tells him no gentlemen ever come round this joint, but he says no and dat I need to give this letter to um. Well here you are in the living and not only am I out a copper to Seesal over there but I owes you a round on the house!
Leving the letter he barkeep pulls down some "fancy" mugs, gives them a quick dusting and fills them to the brim before slamming them down in front of you.
Letter:
Agents of the Empire,
Your triumphant return to our glorious lands shall be heralded by all! Perhaps whilst traipsing about the midnight streets of Cassomir you may a serves or two on behalf of Taldor. First I have reason to believe that members of the Teppish family, who have recently fallen into disgrace, may have a hand in these dreadful kidnappings. Confirm this suspicion of mine and obtain proof of the Teppish families’ involvement, word of their treachery must be brought before the Emperor.
Lastly, the kidnappers seem to be using a unique type of poison I have never encountered before. If you come across any please, discreetly, secure me a sample. I would like to add it to my collection for future… study.
In the Emperor’s Name,

Cheliax:

While collecting your things for the dorm something catches your eye tucked under your pillow. Reaching up you move aside the pillow to reveal a small back candle painted with the red symbol of Cheliax. The candle sits on a red satin bag atop a leather bound portfolio. Inside the portfolio are two letters, one stamped with seal you have never seen before the second bears the mark of the Paracountess Draleen, the woman who first took interest in your dark knowledge and sponsored you for membership in the Pathfinders. It was her promises of dark secrets that persuaded you to leave your home and travel to Absalom.
Her Majestrix ‘s Most loyal Subject,
The Taldorian dandies have a vermin problem do they? How poetically delicious! While in Cassimir let us see what we can do to stir things up in the rat’s nest shall we. I‘ve taken the liberty of having the enclosed letter drafted up and stamped with the seal of a powerful Taldorian family. Ensure that it finds its way into the possession one of the culprits you put down; the Taldor authorities are sure to find it when they clean up.
While doing your investigation you will also have the pleasure of doing me a small personal favor. Rumor has it that the passages below Cassimir are heavily trapped. If you come across one of these traps carefully document its function so that I may reproduce it.
I am always looking for new playthings...

Osirion:

Passing through the halls of the Grand Lodge a young Osirion dressed fine silks stops you,
Master Aslan, so glad I am that I found you before your departure. I wanted to return this tomb to you incase our paths do not cross again for some time.
He hands you an old, but well kept, leather bound book. On the cover of the text written in Osirion, in faded gold leaf is the title “Saga of the Sapphire”.
You were very right I found the section on the Pharaoh Pyctoris most enlightening.
He gives you a polite bow and walks off down a crowded hallway.
The book seems to be a short history of one of the many Osirion Dynasties. Leafing through the book you come across a slip of folded papyrus.
Note:
Honored subjects of the Ruby Prince,
I find these tales of rodents of unusual size plaguing the city of Cassimir troubling. They call to mind stories of an ancient Osirion artifact known as the Jet Rat. Lost for thousands of years this artifact was the work of a depraved druid who used it to create and army of vicious rats that plagued the pharos of old. In order to confirm that this is in fact the “Jet Rat”, please collect a sample of one of the creatures transformed by its magic. A patch of skin or fur from the back of the creature’s neck should be sufficient for our needs.
If the “Jet Rat” is truly responsible for the giant vermin plaguing Cassimir you may very well come across some magical traps put in place to guard the artifact. In my research, traps from this era routinely are tied to a specific object used to bypass them. Find me one of these keys, it might give our scholars in-site into bypassing the traps left behind by our ancestors.
In Service of our Ruby Prince,

Quioxti looked up from the parchment and passed it to Thaddeus. "Kidnapping? Hamshanks didn't say anything about kidnapping. Perhaps this little mission of Themis's is worth looking into after all. The intregue is bound to be ripe when kidnapping is involved." The swordsman drained his glass in a single pull, an ear-to-ear grin splitting his face as he put the vessel down. "Let's get this traveling circus on the road!"

Solomon nodded, "An excellent tome. I am pleased to have the privilege of returning it. Thank you for bringing this to my attention." He places the book in his satchel and returns the bow. "I'm certain it will make the trip far more interesting. I am on my way to eat prior to sailing. You are welcome to join me, if you wish?"

Departing the Chapterhouse with his fellow Osirion, Solomon enjoys a good meal and then proceeds to the ship.

Ready to rock and roll.

The passage to Taldor is uneventful and after two tedious days at sea the port of Cassimir slides into view. Even from a mile or so out the signs of decay now marring this once grandiose city are clearly evident. The sun sinks slowly in the west as your ship makes port and the whole of the city is bathed in a fading golden light.

You are greeted as you disembark the ship by a sharply dressed boy, no more than 12 years old.
Welcome to Cassimir Pathfinders, I am Aardron Laymar.
He gives the group a quick bow.
If you would please follow me Venture-Captain Themis is expecting you.
Slowly a small, sad, smile crosses his face.
We are so glad you are here; things have gotten worse since you were dispatched from Absalom. What have you been told of our desperate situation?

Scarab Sages

Male Human Monk 1

"Only the current situation truly matters, young Aardron." He adjusts his pack and gestures down the pier, "Please, lead onward and explain what has changed, if you feel you may speak openly." Solomon paid special attention to the rest of the dock as the group walked, watching for strange activity.

Ok, so first time out of the gate here with PFS. Humor me some questions--

a) Is it SOP for us to *not* have a challenge/response phrase, and for us to be openly greeted like this?

b) And do we know, from our mission guidelines, if VC Themis is who we should be meeting?

and if you need it, for Perception:

@Solomon: With some notable exceptions (such as Irrisen, or parts of the Mwangi Expanse that are controlled by The Aspis Consortium), The Pathfinder Society is generally at least tolerated in most countries on Golarion, so it is probably safe to note our affiliation openly.

Thaddeus quirks an eyebrow at the boy's greeting.

"I trust that there will be suitable... refreshments... at the lodge here?"

He then meaningfully takes a sip from his clay mug, before continuing.

"As to your problem, we were told that there might be a small vermin infestation that needed to be dealt with..."

Quioxti breathed deep the air of Cassimir. He looked about, taking note of obvious changes to the cityscape since his last visit. It took him a moment to remember the boy standing in from of his group was addressed them. By the time he did, the party was already moving away from the ship. He hurried to catch up.

"Perhaps it's best wait and receive the latest news from Venture-Captain Themis herself. You never know whose ears are lurking nearby."

I'm assuming VC Themis heads the lodge here in Cassimir. I don't have the resources available at work to confirm that. However, VC Hamshanks in Absolom did say this was her assignment we were being called upon to fulfill.

P.S. I'm reading through Tales of Old Margreve and lovin' it!

Aardron gives Thaddeus small nod,
Yes, I have been instructed by Venture-Captain Themis to arrange for any amenities you may request. I have taken the liberty of having 5 of the finest rooms at the lodge set aside for your arrival.
With the mention of vermin he seem to become somewhat taken aback. After giving Thaddeus a confused look, realization dawns on his face,
Ah yes the R.O.U.S's, they continue to plague the city and Venture-Captain Themis is convinced more than ever that they are in fact related to the kidnappings. You are right though, giving Quioxti a nod, These are indeed matters that should be discussed privately. I know that the Venture-Captain is anxious for your arrival. Please follow me.

He heads off into the city.

1. As mentioned above The Pathfinders are "accepted" throughout most of Golarion.

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

Venture-Captain Hestia Themis, a small, dark-haired, Taldan woman, sits behind her enormous blackwood desk in the Pathfinder lodge in Cassomir. Dressed in black her eyes are red and wet with recent tears. Aardron knocks softly on the door to the office. Looking up Hestia quickly dabs her tears away with a delicate handkerchief before standing and beckoning you in.
Ah greetings Pathfinders, please come, be seated. Aardron, kindly get our guests some wine.
Aardron gives the Venture-Captain a nod and heads off down the hall. As you enter her office Themis straightens he clothes before, again, seating herself behind the desk. Taking a long slow breath she begins speaking, her voice, little more that a whisper, filled with sorrow.
My dear friend, the Countess Arieta Patrizia, is dead. She escaped capture by fiends who operate beneath Cassomir only to succumb to disease and wounds incurred in Cassomir’s disgusting sewers. the Venture-Captain’s voice rises as anger and grief build in her words and she pauses a moment to compose herself before continue.
Ordinarily, this would be a matter for the Taldan authorities, but Arieta came to me after escaping and I’ll be dammed if I trusts the inept city watch to enact proper justice for her death.
Themis, pauses as Aardron silently enters the room, handing each of you a crystal goblet filled with red wine. During this interutpion, The Venture-Captain rises and begins to paces back and forth behind her desk. Once Aardron has once again left Hestia stops her pacing looks each of you in the eye before contining.
Before she died Arieta recounted the story of her capture and imprisonment. What she described leads me to believe that only the Pathfinder Society can resolve this issue. You see I originally asked for a team to be sent here to investigate the possible existence of an artifact beneath the streets of the city that transforms normal rats into monstrosities, making them bigger, viler and more vicious. From what I’ve been able to piece together I have reason to think this artifact is called the Jet Rat, an old evil from ancient Osirion. An object of this power should be in the vaults beneath the Grand Lodge in Absalom where we can study, catalog, and safely store it.
Wearily Themis once again seats herself; places an elbow on the desk, rests her chin on her hand, and stares off, lost in thought.
Arieta told me she saw this artifact while imprisoned, being actively used by her captors. Worse, the monsters she described using this object were derros, vile Darklands creatures who have long plagued Cassomir with their vile deeds. I have a map here that shows the location of the sewer grate Arieta escaped through, she could not, due to her condition, recall much about how she got to the grate, but I have faith you can trace her steps back to her captors.
With a deep sigh Themis comes out from behind the desk and stands in front of you, a look of pleading in her eyes.
Obtaining this artifact…. that is your mission. If, while undertaking this quest, you happen to free any captured Taldans and rip the hearts out of the ones who are responsible for Arieta’s death, I would take it as a personal kindness.

Big Post to get things rolling

Quioxti takes the map from the Venture-Captain and studies it as she continues to speak. As she finishes, he rolls the map back up and absently hands it to the person on his right. Standing a bit taller, he addresses the Captain, "Obtaining this artifact will not be a problem. We are Pathfinders afterall - it's what we do. As a fellow Taldan, freeing my imprisoned brethren goes without saying." With a flurish, he removes his hat and bows deeply before Hestia, "And it will be a personal pleasure to see the Countess's death avenged for you, Captain."

Looking about at his compainion, Quioxti asks, "What say you, men? Any last questions before we put some vile derro to the sword?

"I am curious about the Countess' demesne. Who inherits, and why would someone want the Countess dead? What was her role in the politics here, and her allegiances? It is possible the thugs in the sewers were nothing more than catspaws?" Solomon steepled his fingers, thinking. "My concern is that we are being used ourselves, covering the tracks of a larger conspiracy. The Lady Patrizia's position within Court and the region merit investigation. Could the succession of Patrizia not serve to to further another's machinations? A clever foe could wield a cult just as easily as a sword." He gestures to the Venture Captain, "Please, ma'am, are you able to add any details regarding the political landscape? I doubt the Lady's unfortunate death should be simply be random handiwork of madmen."

The Veteran's Vault: MAP

The Venture-Captain gives Solomon as weak smile. Is this your first time in Taldor Pathfinder .....? she pauses for the monk to supply his name and relpy to the question.
You will do well here, I am afraid the political intrigue you describe is very common in these lands. The political landscape is rife with deceit and as crowded with schemers and “Lords” as the Magwi is with trees. As one of your companions can attest there is a saying in Taldor that you "can’t take a piss without tripping over someone’s title." My friend was a countess in name only, with very little wealth and even less political power. Never the less I have investigated the possibility of some unseen foe working through a proxy, but as of yet this has lead nowhere. Sadly disappearances are quite common in Cassomir and I fear that Arieta was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She grows quiet again.

Scarab Sages

Solomon bows his head in deference, "My condolences, Captain. The loss of a friend is never easy, and I did not mean to make it more painful. If you are certain there is no political motivation to this act, then we will focus on this abhorrent cult and do our utmost to recover the relic." He sips from his cup, allowing a moment of silence to settle in the room. "Would you recommend we press into the city's catacombs tonight, then, or wait until the morning? Do the local authorities restrict access, or are we free to enter as we please?"
