Campaign Map RoW Loot Sheet

Welcome to Heldren!

Campaign Map RoW Loot Sheet

Date and Time: Oathday Thursday, 25th day of Arodus, 4713 AR
Mid Morning

If you are from Heldren:

It is Oathday in Taldor. The year has been generally unremarkable, with enough rain to grow crops and livestock. The lumber business, which is the bulk of Heldren's commerce, is progressing as

normal. You can hear the sawmill run most hours of the day or night. Tomorrow, Fireday, the town square is scheduled to be a large market. You are likely going about your business as normal.

If you are from elsewhere:

You have arrived in Heldren in the last few hours via overland travel. Heldren is a small town of a few hundred people at the intersection of two major roads, one running north-south and the other
running east-west. At the center of the intersection (and the center of town) is a large statue of an attractive looking human woman. The town is clean and fairly quiet. Most of the buildings are
constructed of wood. You frequently see locals walking between buildings. If you look at the locals and smile or wave, they will smile back at you.

Background areas of interest:
- The town square (area 1): The area around the statue is mostly clear, with a few vendors selling wares and several more empty booths. There is a large building (building 2) with a clocktower
overlooking the square.
- The Armory (building 3): The only stone building in Heldren, the armory stands atop a hill only a few dozen feet from the rest of the city. The Armory is a square building some 30' high with
battlements around the top. It looks very defensible.
- The General Store (building 4): This building sits right on the main square and has a large wooden placard announcing goods for sale.
- The town smithy (building 5): As you approach this building, you hear the sounds of hammers falling on metal. There is a large chimney which has a steady stream of smoke coming out of it.
- The Silver Stoat (building 6): A combination of tavern and what passes for an inn in a small town. Should you open the main door, you can see a large room with seats for 20 or 30 people but is
empty at this hour.
- The Stables (building 7): As you approach this building, you can smell and hear horses inside. A stable hand is going about his daily work.

Let's get this adventure started! Please position yourselves as the story unfolds.

Looking at his home after leaving it for some time is bittersweet. Memories of happiness overshadowed by the less unhappy ones growing up he looks around wondering if his home is still around. It may not have being much but it was still his home.

"I'm going to take a look around, since I haven't being home for some time already. Don't mind me. The Silver Stoat is the Town's only Inn and Tavern but the meals are decent, at least from what I remembered and their brews are excellent."

Perhaps I shall follow you, Thorn. I have never been here before, and I find it good to know something about my surroundings. That is, if you'll have me. Otherwise, you'll find me at the tavern.

He looks around him, noting things like the architecture and people's mannerisms, before taking a sip of ale from his flask.

Cayden, if this is the path you have chosen for me, then I walk it gladly. Just, keep me warm, ok?

Turning to Rikael, Thorn gives a grin but it seems sad.

"I would welcome your company but forgive me if I seemed aloof....I didn't have a very good childhood here and it was one of the factors that drove me to spend as little time here as possible. IOt's being a long time since I've being home."

Rikael gives Thorn a wry grin as well.

Be as aloof as you want friend. I understand how it is. I haven't been home since my parents passed, and I really didn't even feel at home then. See, I grew up as the child of a pair of traveling merchants, and I didn't "settle" in Varisia until they retired. By then, I was almost an adult. So, by that time, I felt like an outsider.

He looks back at the carriage, and then back at Thorn.

Besides, I spent the last of my coin last night at that tavern, so it wouldn't do me any good to to go to the tavern here.

Dru hops from the carriage, obviously thankful to be free of it's confines. The bear stretches and paces around the immediate area, sniffing everywhere.

Sildur follows him out, stretching in a similar fashion. He listens to Rikael and Thorn's conversation, "I'd have given just about anything for my father to be a merchant. My childhood might have been a good deal more exciting."

He looks down at Thorn's comment, "Well at least I left of my own accord, no child should have the choice made for them."

He smiles again, "I'll go with you two provided there are no objections? I could do with a little fresh air after the ride...it was getting a little stuffy in there I must say."

Getting off the carriage as well, Hitomi clutches her fur jacket, making sure she stays warm. "I will agree to the inn. It would not be a bad idea to have stay tonight. And merchant life not so great. Not very excited as you would like to think." she responded to the rest of the group, her Tien accent coming through.

Agatha Survival:

You are comfortable now but can't be sure what the future holds. Perhaps you should bring a few extra changes of clothes, just to be safe.

Thorn Perception:

Most of the few people you see are non descript villagers. You do see one person you recognize as one of the village elders walking between buildings in the town. You remember her name as Ionnia Teppen.

Thorn Survival:

The weather is a bit cool for Arodus, with a few people even wearing long sleeved shirts. There is no obvious change happening.

While Agatha moves toward the Silver Stoat, the bell in the clock tower strikes once, indicating the turn of an hour. According to the clock, it is 1000.

Once Agatha opens the door to the inn, she can see the room is empty. There is a lone woman there, cleaning and moving crockery around behind the bar. She turns to Agatha and says, "Welcome, Stranger. I am Kale, the woman of the house. We do not normally serve food before noon but I can look in the kitchen if you want something right now. Otherwise, you are welcome to wait for lunch to be ready."

Agatha smiles and says Blessings upon this place. Thank you Kale, but I can wait for lunch. Something to drink would be nice, tea if possible ale if not. I will wait here if that is no problem. I have some friends who will be joining me. Is there accommodation available?

Agatha looks around the room and finds a table to sit at, near the door. A bit of a journey, but not the hardest she had made.
A very nice place, this is. So why do I have a sense of foreboding. I hope the others are here soon.

Campaign Map RoW Loot Sheet

Rikal's perception:

The statue is a large stone statue of a beautiful human woman. It does not look like any goddess, ruler, famous person, or mythological figure that you recognize. You wonder if the locals may know more.

Kale's eyes perk up when Agatha mentions a drink. She says "We have tea from Qadira, brought across the border some weeks ago. Let me get you a cup. " Kale disappears into the kitchen and returns with a tea pot.

After producing a teacup, she fills the cup with hot water and places it in front of Agatha. "You are welcome to stay here in the common room of the Silver Stoat if you have dinner or drinks with us in the evening. We are far too small to have private rooms. What is it that brings you and your friends to Heldren, lady..." Kale's voice trails off as she tries to build in a pause for Agatha to introduce herself.

Agatha:

Kale seems very sociable and outgoing. You think that she may know much about local goings on. Perhaps you could find out more from her. If you want to try to find out more, include a diplomacy, bluff or similar check with your conversation.

Thorn, that is a beautiful statue. Who is it? Also, the buildings here are beautiful as well. It sorta reminds me of back home, in Varisia.

Rikael stares at the statue for a few seconds and then looks around him, at the people walking around. They all look friendly enough, and someone sees him staring he gives them a sheepish wave and a smile.

Thorn shows both Rikael and Sildur around his hometown, greeting those villagers he does know but largely ignoring the rest.

He does remember Ionnia Teppen being one of those who treated him with some fairness. He approaches her with the two in tow or maybe three. I assume the others are following.

"Ionnia, It is I , Thorn. Do you still remember me?"

He frowns, "Though I doubt we've been gathered here for ale and strolls through the fields..."

While Thorn talks to the lady, Rikael pets Dru on the head and finally replies to Sildur.

I'll admit, having merchants for parents was never boring, and I never did feel at home settled down anywhere. The traveling life suited me, and still does. Though sometimes I do wonder who my real parents were. I was adopted, you see. It's not a life quest or anything though, I just wonder. They found me in Andoran, but my searches turned up no clues.

He looks kind of wistful for a moment, then grins.

Ah well, enough of the past! The gods brought us here for some reason, so I aim to find out why. Though, no one said I couldn't have a little fun doing it!

He looks to Thorn's lady friend and smiles.

Rikael Ashenstone, traveling warrior and adventurer for hire at your service my lady. May I inquire your name?

As Thorn approaches Ionnia and re-introduces himself, Ionnia's eyes light up and a smile appears on her face. "Why, yes, Thorn. Heldren and I do not easily forget one of our own. We were worried that something had happened to you, what with you being gone for some time. I will inform the council that you have reappeared when we meet next."

After the initial shock of seeing Thorn, Ionnia lowers her voice and speaks more solemnly, "Your father's, ...err..., your house still stands in town. We were not sure what to do with it, as your condition was not easily determined. Even Old Mother Theodora and Elder Safender could not say for sure if you were alive or dead. I'm glad to see that you are well. Anyway, your house should be serviceable, if a bit bare. You may find furnishings for it at the market in the square tomorrow." The house is area T on the map.

Hearing Rikael speak, Ionnia turns to him and replies, "Welcome to Heldren, Mister Ashenstone. I am Ionnia Teppin, elected minister of Heldren's council. You may indeed find work as a warrior. Our normal group of protectors, the High Sentinels, have had some difficulties keeping the local bandits in check of late. Their headquarters is in the Border Wood, some distance to the south. You may want to check with them for employment. Heldren's budget for this year does not include a provision for us hiring warriors directly."

Seeing the rest of the people behind Heldren and Rikael, Ionnia then asks, "Who are the rest of your associates?"

Sildur bows to Ionnia, "Sildur Farwind my lady. Wanderer and free spirit. Heldren is a beautiful place...I hazard a guess you would be the one to ask. Do you know of any local green shrines or wardens of the druidic order? I daresay I could use a little familar company and of course one must make at least a few gestures of membership here and there."

A soft grunt causes Sildur to look down, "Ah yes, my shaggy companion here would be Dru..."

Thorn looks relieved that his house is still standing.
"Thank you Elder, It is indeed good to hear that my home is still standing. Please convey my thanks to both Old Mother Theodora and Elder Safender."

Looking serious as he hears the latest news.

"Is something wrong? The high Sentinels usually have things well in hand. I would hire on as well since I'm back for an indeterminate time."

Turning to both his companions.
"Well it seems my old home is still standing but I'll need to clear it out. No telling what it looks like now. It should have enough space for everyone and yes Dru should like it. We used to have a small clearing behind where my father used to work on his more exotic traps."

Sildur, I'm not exactly sure who is with Thorn and who is elsewhere. It is certainly fine to have any or all of you in that group, or at the tavern, or wandering around the city. The initial setup of a new group is always a little awkward so take some liberties until you all get in the same place and the designed story starts to unfold.

Ionnia turns to the person who just spoke up, "Let me welcome you to Heldren, Mister Farwind, as I can do for you all. We do not have an established Druidic order nearby, but Elder Safender at the temple may be able to see to your needs. Thorn may still know the way or I am sure the rest of the people would be able to direct you. "

Returning to Thorn she continues, "I really can't say what is happening. Banditry is, unfortunately, a side-effect of modern times. Usually, the High Sentinels keep bandits so quiet as to be unnoticed but we have been hearing about thievery and occasional attacks over the last few weeks. It seems we have either new bandits or the High Sentinels are preoccupied. We may see a few of them at the Market tomorrow, refilling their supplies."

Next up: I will continue the conversation with Kale and see where Urga puts himself. Update posted soon-ish, I hope.

Meanwhile at the Silver Stoat....

Kale pours a cup of tea for Izumi and continues the conversation with Agatha.

"Yes, things are well here in Heldren," she replies to Agatha. "It has been very cool for the last few weeks, which is unusual but the town has mostly been unaffected. People say that if you go away from town, into the Border Woods, you can see snow. Snow in Arodus, imagine that! There must be magic involved for that to happen."

Moving the subject back to the travelers, Kale asks "You said friends will be joining you? Are there more than one?"

Sense Motive:

Kale seems relaxed and talkative, not immediately concerned about the rumors of snow.

If I read correctly, everybody is together at the same table?

"Welcome, guests. It looks like we are in need of more tea. Is that good for everybody?"

Kale does seem a bit surprised at the bear. "Does he do any tricks, like balance a bottle on his head?" she asks. "I saw a bear in a traveling carnival do that once. It was a big hit with the crowd."

He gives the bear a pat and drapes his heavy cloak over a chair before dropping into a seat next to the others, "Tea will serve for the moment, though something a little stronger would be welcome with our meal. What have you by way of fare to restore a group of travelers?"

Agatha gets up and looks across to the clock tower. the news of snow near here in summer disturbs her in someway. What is that bell, Kale?

Urga wakes up in the carriages and realizes the others have left. Cursing, he quickly joins the group at the tavern. Taking a seat, he introduces himself to Kale, "Greetings, I am Urga. I have passed through this town before, but I have never stopped at your tavern. It's a fine establishment. How is business?"

Urga nods at Sildur's suggestion, "I too would appreciate something a little stronger than tea."

Kale talks to the table in general. "I just heard the clocktower chime, so our main service starts in just under an hour for lunch. If you all would like to eat, I will see what I can do to make things come out of the kitchen faster. Most people order the venison flank steak but we also have numble pie and mutton if you would prefer that."

"As far as stronger drink goes, we have our famous Three Devil Ale, the finest in Taldor. We brew it here at the Stoat from Chelish hops. There is also wine and brandy. Later today, we should have whiskey as well. We expect that one of the merchants selling at the market day tomorrow will arrive this afternoon. Between you five and a merchant or two, the house should be very full."

Kale is now in her element, chatting with everybody at the table. She tells Agatha about the clocktower: "The clocktower on top the Town Hall has a bell system that rings once an hour from morning to evening. The clockworks themselves were imported a long time ago but we maintain them with town funds."

Finally, she says "You all have probably heard enough from me. I suggest the Ale for you gentlemen," she says to Sildur and Urga.

"Does anybody else want something before lunch?" she asks?

The house is exactly as he remembered it. The roof with its shingles, stone base and heavy wooden beams as supports, his father did knew what he was doing as he contructed it.

Pushing the door opened, wincing as its screech, he takes a look athe the furniture in the house and then with a sigh, draws his axe. A few minutes later, a merry fire burns in the hearth as the pieces of his old furniture made good firewood, old as they were. Clearing the house took some time but with a small kitchen, 3 rooms and a decent sized celler, He supposed that he could have had it worse.

Taking stock of his now very empty house, he takes stock of what he needs for now.
A table
Some chairs
New pots
Food supplies perhaps
Beds

With a sigh, allowing the heat to warm the house and ensuring that the house wouldn't burn down. He left to find his companions to the sound of a bell.
Haven't heard that in a long while. I wonder if the rest ar doing fine.

In short summary, the house is very empty indeed.

some of the pie please, with some ale Agatha says, sitting back down.

Kale moves behind the bar and starts to pour servings on the Three Devil Ale into earthenware mugs.

"I heard 3 ales. We only have one size, but I can refill the mugs as often as required." Holding all 3 mugs in one hand, she walks to the table, pushing one mug in front of Rikael, one in front of Agatha, and one in front of Urga. Seeing the silver piece sitting in front of Urga she says, "There is no need to worry about that right now; the first ale comes with the meal. I'll let you know the total at the end."

She then continues, "Does anybody want anything else before I place your orders with the cook? So far, we have one mutton and one pie."

Hearing no more orders Kale says, "Then let me go in the back and get the cook motivated. I will be back shortly."

With that, Kale disappears through a door into a room in the back of the tavern.

Sildur nods, "I doubt I could turn down a sales pitch like that, I'll take an ale and some of that venison when you have time. Oh and if you could persuade the cook to part with one of his mutton bones, Dru would be most appreciative."

After a short while, Kale returns from the kitchen with a bone on a plate. She announces, "Your food should be ready shortly. luckily, we did have some bones already cleaned from this morning. Does your bear eat from a plate?"

Rikael, you should already have your drink.

There are a few more rumors still to be discovered which may or may not be helpful. You can role play them out if you would like. My goal was to wait until everybody was together and decided on a course of action before making any meaningful plot progress.

Sildur laughs, "I think the practicality might be lost on him. Still I'm sure he thanks you for the consideration regardless."

Sildur takes the plate from kale and sets it down for Dru. The bear grunts appreciativly and drops down on his hind legs. Holding the bone awkwardly between his front paws, the plate forgotten, he gnaws enthusiastically on one end.

Smiling, Sildur takes a sip of his ale, grunting in a similarly appreciative fashion, "That is rather a fine ale, my compliments! What else can you tell us of your fine town? Any news or advice that might draw the attention of us far flung travelers?"

Ah! Ale Cayden Cailean himself would enjoy! I'll be needing quite a few refills on this, I believe. So, lady Kale, what can you tell me about this fair town? It reminds me a lot of the village in Varisia my parents retired to.

He takes a long pull on his mug and sighs happily, wiping the foam from his mouth with the back of his hand.

Agatha pulls out a loop of string and starts making a cats cradle between her fingers. As you watch she forms intricate patterns of string, and with quick turns and twists changes from pattern to pattern. It is obviously a method of relaxation, to pass the time.
As she does this she asks Where is Thorn? I hope he will be joining us soon. I sense he has been too alone these past few years, and thats not good for anyone.
