Technic Siege/Full Map

You have been summoned to the Pathfinder Society's headquarters at Skyreach, in Absalom. There you are to meet with Venure-Captian Drandle Dreng. You gather outside his chambers, waiting to be admitted to your meeting.

A tall, well-muscled man stands looking at the tapestries on the wall of the waiting room. He is bare-chested, with armor fashioned out of some exotic leather that covers one shoulder and runs down his arms, lower torso, and sparingly on his legs.

Rather than leggings, he wears a cloth wrap that could be considered a kilt of sorts, and sandals leaving his toes free.

Strapped to his back is a tremendous tree limb, carved intricately and fashioned into a great warclub.

Haku hums slightly to himself, a chant of old times...

A short violet haired waif of a gnome bounds into the room, a small songbird on her shoulder, ""Greetings and solicitations, wait ... thats wrong." The gnome wanders around the room seeming somewhat lost, staring at the various bits of art and furniture for a long while. "Salutations! thats the word. I like banana better, and coconut, but what can you do? Common is just plain silly."

Having solved her vocabulary dilemma, the girl finds a comfortable chair, and waits patiently, occasionally jabbering at her thrush in quiet tones.

Sylvan:

"No, I don't think they have any grubs. . . I suppose no one would mind if you checked the furniture for termites, but this place looks rather un-infested. . . No, it is fine if you head out. There are likely all manner of millet and insects in a town of this size . . . Yes, I will call you if needed. . . Geez! Of course I know where I am.

Why hello little one, Haku turns to face Esmerelda, crouching to speak to her face-to-face, Were you summoned by Captain Dreng as well?

A tanned and muscular man opens the door a bit more forcefully than necessary and stomps into the room. In the warm weather, his robes are not tied tight and billow in the wind from his movements. He is bald, and the look on his face clearly shows he means business. A longbow is strapped to his back, along with a quiver of arrows, but no other weapon is visible. Flexing his hands, he squats down near the doorway to the Venture Captain's office.

"So, I'll be doing this with company, eh? Fine, just don't go dying on me, they'll probably dock my pay for it."

Looking up at the new arrival, the islander tahunga smiles, I will do my best to keep us all alive, my friend.

The little druid beams at Haku's politeness, "I was indeed!" Esmeralda rises to her feet on the chair so the tall human need not bend so low, " I love these adventures, especially the ones in interesting places. That's the best part! Onomatopoeia, that is a good word too! BOOM! Do you perchance know many good words in common? I am just learning and most of the words are quite boring."

Esmeralda laughs at Malfeas' introduction, "Not to offend my good sir, but if I die, I do believe your pay will be the least of my worries!"

Malfeas chuckles at the exuberance of the Gnome, "I suppose that's true." Looking at the other half naked man, he adds, "Let us hope we don't have to test your skills, yet from what I hear, very few of these missions are completed without blood letting."

Haku throws his head back with laughter, Like Tangaroa's temper, these missions will test our mettle, pay attention to the signs, though, and you can see when things will turn bad. We will be alright, so long that we beware the signs.

He then regards the gnome as she stands tall on the chair, Words? This, Taldane is not my native tongue either... but my favorite so far is skullduggerous. Hah!

A tall, blond man enters the room . He looks almost like the type that would ravage villages in the North, except instead of a hearty tan, his skin is a bit pale, as if he had spent almost too much time out of the sun.
Dark studded leathers covered his frame, a bow and quiver hung at his back, and a nasty looking morningstar rested at his side.

"Looks like I'm still in time for the meeting," he comments, looking around the room. The undertones of a northern tongue color his words. "Gunther's the name... Gunther Judsson. I take it the Venture-Captain has yet to appear?"

Malfeas looks at the fourth member of their group and grimaces, "Three large men and a Gnome... interesting. Do you really think we'd all be standing out here if the Venture Captain did show up? They were probably waiting for you to show up so they didn't have to repeat themselves. Clients hate to repeat themselves."

"I've heard some Venture-Captains speak their piece once, and any latecomers must get the work details second-hand."

gazing at the others, Gunther continues, "Still, as you say, three large men and a gnome... sounds like something dangerous, and perhaps exciting." He holds out his hand to Malfeas. "What shall I name you?"

Malfeas looks at the hand for a moment, then his eyes flick back and forth between the hand and Gunther's face, then, begrudgingly, he sighs and give him a firm hand shake. "I go by Malfeas."

Gunther returns the firm handshake. "Pleased to know you, Malfeas. I feel we will work well together, eh?"

He looks to the others, quirking a bushy eyebrow and giving a lopsided smile, waiting for their responses too.

You are ushered into the Captain's chambers by his butler.

Venture-Captain Drandle Dreng, a wiry old man with a wild gray beard and glinting eyes, sits on a large plush bench next to a finely dressed, full-figured woman who looks as though this entire meeting isn’t worth her time. Dreng warmly greets the PCs and introduces them to the woman, Lady Gloriana Morilla; the Taldan woman tilts her head slightly in acknowledgement of the introduction, but otherwise makes no move to greet anyone.

Dreng addresses the group:
“Recently, a contact from the Low Azlanti embassy in Escadar approached us with an offer. It seems they have discovered a unique relic of Azlanti origin on the Inner Sea’s floor that we have a unique opportunity to add to our collection for study. In return, however, we must deliver one of our catalogued items to Escadar in exchange. The Low Azlanti drive a hard bargain, so we need you to escort a relics broker to Escadar so he can authenticate the Azlanti item and mediate a fair deal on the Ten’s behalf."

Malfeas furrows his brow as the Venture Captain speaks, "So what is our mission, escort the broker, deliver the relic, or retrieve the Azlanti one? What size are the relics in question? And what interest does the Lady Morilla have in this that she is sitting in on a briefing?" he asks in a barrage or questions, not letting the Venture captain answer one before the next has left his lips.

Gunther tugged on his short beard as he listened.

"So we are the escort, eh? But the fact you want an escort means that you suspect there might be some trouble, perhaps yes?"

He hoped the Venture-Captian might elaborate on the mission a bit more...

Looking at Gunther as he introduced himself, Haku smiles, I am called Haku, it is good to meet all of you.

Haku listens as the old Venture-Captain details the mission. He looks back and forth between Dreng and the woman standing at his side, with a bored look.

So, we go take this specialist to Escadar. Where is that?

"Oh yes, you see the Society is not the only organization interested in the artifact. It seems the Aspis Consortium has also tendered an offer, and the gillmen have decided to accept the Consortium’s deal if the Society cannot finalize its agreement within 30 days. An Aspis-funded warship patrols the waters just beyond Absalom’s harbor, preventing Pathfinder agents from sailing to Escadar unmolested."

"Escadar lies on the Isle of Erran, just north of Kortos."

Lady Morilla stirs from her silence and speaks in a strong, demanding voice.
“I have used some of the Empire of Taldor’s most skilled operatives to plant a false crew manifest and course plans with the harbormaster, ensuring that the Aspis Consortium spies who certainly keep an eye on such matters believe we are moving our relic to Escadar on a ship tomorrow morning. This decoy should occupy the Consortium sufficiently for you to travel overland to Escadar with plenty of time to make the final agreement with the gillmen before the Society’s window of opportunity runs out.”

Do we have a way to cross the channel? I assume there is a channel we need to cross to get to Erran from Kortos

Esmerelda smiles at the word, 'improvise', "Adapt, Improvise, Overcome. A sound strategy Brigh said so once. I think it was that time she had to use a whirlygig in place of a sprocket, or maybe I have that backwards. Truth be told I don't really follow the god of clockwork, but I like her toys! Anyhow, Skullduggery is a good word! It is no coconut but it is close."

Glancing at her companions she adds. "I suppose if you can all swim, maybe I can fashion you into a raft. I am not really a swimmer, but with enough ingenuity, I think it could be done. Too bad I am not ingenious. You may drown! . . . Oh, by the way I am called Esmerelda, or Esmeralda if you are not a gnome. There is a difference, but no one but me seems to be able to hear the difference."

"By the by, is there anything special we should be on guard for? I assume Aspis agents would be at the top of any list, but I don't know how to spot those aside from getting close and hoping to spot a badge." Diplomacy, if it will avail anything of import: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12. Esmerelda looks off into the space somewhere between her and the Venture Captain, and her eyes lose their focus as she drifts off in thought, K. Nature - potential natural enemies on the island to watch out for?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14.

"Then I guess we don't have much time to sit around do we? Where do we find this Relics Broker we are supposed to escort? I assume he'll have the relic the Society is trading?" growing impatient that the majority of his questions were ignored.

"I would guess that the route we take is up to us? That way no one can be waiting in our path, eh? Do we get any funds to aid us, or is it up to our own resourcefulness?"

Dreng laughs to himself absently, then instructs the PCs to go to the Siphons in the Puddles.

Meet with the information broker Grandmaster Torch. He’ll give you a map for a smugglers’ trail through the isle’s center that should allow for relatively easy and secret travel overland to Escadar. It should take about 7 days. From there you'll take a ferry to Escadar. The Society has hired an appraiser and relics broker named Nester Rees to verify the authenticity of the gillmen’s relic; Rees will meet up with you after your meeting with Grandmaster Torch."

"I've arranged lodgings for the you at an Escadar tavern called the Grindylow’s Goblet, where the gillmen have agreed to meet with you. Once you arrive, you only need to send word to the Low Azlanti embassy, then have Master Rees conduct the negotiations at the tavern on the Society’s behalf. You are responsible for Rees’ safety and for the success of his negotiations."

"As for Aspis agents, they tend to make themselves known to Pathfinders..."

Excellent, then let us make the acquaintance of Grandmaster Torch, Haku places his log of a greatclub on his shoulder, I take my leave of you. It was nice to meet you Lady... Morilla, was it?

The big islander smiles broadly, no doubt drawing a funny look from the Taldan lady.

Who is this Rees? Can you give us a description so we know that he is him when we meet? Or if it a she? I suppose it won't matter as long as t isn't an apsis spy. That would be interesting though."

"The grand master was horribly burned I think. He is all scarred. Superscar! He doesn't mind if you stare though, or at least he has never asked me stop. He loves new pathfinders and does his best to keep us safe. He is a hero!"

"I pity the Aspis spy who tries to fool me," says Malfeas, his voice cold with promise. {b]"I suggest if we do not have a description, we ask around for someone of a similar name, like Restor Fees or Denter Vees. If they admit to being that name, they are a spy, and we kill them. If they correct us, then they get past step one."[/b]

Turning back to the Venture Captain, he adds "So the plan is; go to Torch, get a map, Go to Rees, take Rees and relic on trail to Escadar, complete trade, bring Rees and new relic back, don't let him die. Did I miss anything?"

He turns to regard the rest of his allies and continues, So I will leave that up to you all.

While she waits for the others to get ready to move on Esmeralda asks the venture captain, "May I have a scrap of paper? Today I am collecting interesting words, and I want to write them down before I forget. Subterfuge, skullduggery, and purple."

Drandle turns to Esme and says:

“Master Rees is an appraiser and relic broker and friend of the Pathfinder Society; he is a middle-aged man of Garundi descent who has worked with us for some time now. While he tried going on field missions as a Pathfinder in his youth, his weak constitution limits his ability to travel. He has a very sharp mind, however, and the ability to identify genuine Azlanti relics. We have used Rees’s expertise on many occasions, and he has always come through.”

Having said his goodbyes, Haku leans up against the wall nearest the exit, and joins Esme in waiting for our companions, while listening to the good questions that they ask...

"Here, young gnome. Begin your list with my compliments."

"Thank you!" The gnome begins scribbling down all manner of random words on the scrap of paper.

"Thirty days. . . Eight to cross the distance . . . with me moving so much slower than you it will likly take ten or twelve . . . That is a shame. I can get along alright in the wild, but foraging makes me move even slower, and I already move slower than you big folk. If we forage instead of bringing food, it will take sixteen to twenty four days by my count to make the crossing. That only leaves us a spare six to fourteen fourteen days instead of a spare twenty two days. I am not sure we have the extra time. We should consult Rees, and pack a lot of food. And Grand Master Torch. I like him. Should we be off?" The gnome nearly walks into a chair as she continues to scrawl random words on the paper as she walks. Realizing the self imposed danger, Esme tucks the paper into her bandolier, and hands the pen back to the servant kind enough to have provided the same.

"Thank you again, but I don't think I have time to keep collecting words if we are to make the journey on time!" With that, the gnome wanders out of the room.

I am not trying to rush anyone, please continue to ask questions and what not, but Esme is flighty, and now has a new task.

"The faster we do this mission, the better, if that means hard tack for a few days, so be it." With that, Malfeas heads out of the room, and toward the probable location of Master Torch, not really checking to see if the others are keeping up.

"I've got a few days worth of food, but I'll more than likely need more," Gunther says, as he catches up with the group. "It might be a bit tight, my purse is thin..."

No worries, guys - the Society will reimburse you. You can just assume that you bought eight days of trail rations and you'll use them up - no need to even record them.

After making your preparations. You may need camping supplies and cold-weather gear for crossing the Kortos Mountains. These you will need to buy and record on you character and chronicle sheets.

Finding the Siphons requires no special skill but does take you through the Puddles’ rough-and-tumble, flooded streets and into the sewers below. A gruff half-orc guard grants the you entry into Torch’s audience chamber in the Siphons, a large stone room that has been magically rid of all standing water or even airborne moisture. Torch, a dark-haired, burn-covered man in his late-middle years sits in a large bathtub, and two attendants continually pour cool water over his cursed, festering wounds. His half-orc bodyguards eye you warily as the Grandmaster rises to greet them and speaks.

“Well met, Pathfinders. I see you have survived as the Decemvirate’s pawns thus far, and for that I commend you. This next task they have for you is more dangerous than the venture captain may have told you, so let me give you a word of warning. I have made it my life’s work to ensure Pathfinder agents are given all the tools they need to return home from their myriad adventures, and this map is the tool I give you. Follow the directions on my map as strictly as you can. Deviate from this path and you may encounter challenges far beyond your abilities. Many would paint me and those who believe like I do as betrayers of the Society, but it is the corps of the organization that I am completely loyal to. Each and every one of you."

“If you believe you have been mistreated by the Ten or their representatives, don’t hesitate to let me know upon your return from Escadar. My network of agents and spies if vast, and I am a powerful ally to have on your side."

”Now be off. You have a long journey ahead of you. And remember, don’t deviate from this map—it’s designed to get you there and back safely!”

Malfeas takes the map and quickly scans it, then goes to put it in his pocket and pauses for a moment before offering it up to the others, "Any of you want to see this too?"

If the map does take us into the cold areas of the mountains, Malfeas will pick up some cold weather gear on the way out of town, and it has already been marked off on my sheet

Gunther also takes a look at the map, trying to memorize the route and landmarks before handing it back to Malfeas (or down to Esmerelda).
