"Hmm... the lion approves of you eh? Well.. this is his library."

She feels around on her desk, then opens a doors and withdraws a single key.

"I think the documents you seek will be in the locked rooms. Return the keys and be gone when the performance is over. So long as nobody suspects you were here they'll have no reason to ask me anything."

She hands the key to Untir. "Please don't give me any reason to regret this."

Copper gets the sense that she has some fondness towards the lion. She seems to be a bit glum, but content to some degree.

"It's difficult to say... The students treat me well, the staff treat me... fairly I guess... all things considered. Thank you for your consideration... but I do feel it necessary to remain here. I would be glad to help you with your work though. The lion usually takes charge of the main room, but I can give you a hand with the ancient texts. I've also spent a little time in the administrator's room as well."

She gets up and unlocks the first of the doors for you (room 5). Bookcases cover nearly every inch of the walls in this room, which is only faintly illuminated by small lights set into the ceiling. A glass-paned door seals each panel of shelves, keeping the ancient tomes stored within free of dust. "I usually just clean up, but occasionally I've been tasked to sort some of the books in the rooms that are off-limits to the new recruits. Only with supervision though. I've been told not to touch the books on the center shelf along the eastern wall. Back when I could still read I remember seeing books there that were particularly valuable. Probably why they lock that room up now."

She continues over to the last door (room 6) and unlocks that as well. Two rows of tall bookshelves flank the imposing yet beautiful wooden desk that presides over this room. Over the door hangs a portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III, portrayed wearing an especially smug grin. A brass plaque on the frame of the portrait reads, “A cunning lie is never told twice.”

"This room is used by the administrator for special research whenever he chooses to visit. I never come in here on my own, but occasionally he'll ask for my help."

She counts as an additional researcher for the purpose of determining how long it takes to go through a room if she helps you in either of the 2 previously locked rooms.

Room 5 contains a vast amount of ancient and valuable books, and it's a lot easier to find books that directly reference the dates in question. The standard set of skills work here along with appraise. All research checks made in this room get a +2 bonus due to the sheer quantity of related texts. This room would take 1 hour to research with just one person, and up to 5 people can work together to divide up that time.

Room 6 is particularly small and seems to be a research desk. The standard set of skills apply here, and the room would take 1 hour to go through alone. Up to 4 people can work together to divide up the task.

Telos and Kolris come running into the room, and Kolris looks about for any other threats. While this scuffle is certainly making some noise, thankfully nobody has resorted to any more explosive tactics yet and Narayan's tactics seem to be working well as far as beating down the swarm without causing excessive damage to the texts. Although, if a more explosive tactic were to be required, a peak in the music is approaching in a minute or so.

Narayan: That was supposed to be full damage from the first hit, miss on the second attack. Must have mentally decided half damage or something.

A flurry of chops, slashes, and punches pummels the fluttering books and slows them to a near halt. Finally the few remaining flit back to their shelves leaving the damaged volumes scattered about on the floor. Thankfully most of them seem to have torn or crumpled pages and broken spines and covers. Nothing that a bit of time and mending spells can't handle, although it may take a few minutes to patch them all. The tome that seemed to be the core of the swarm is among the damaged ones but it based on the cover it is the general's logbook that Untir spotted earlier. It and one other book appear to be the only books that suffered any noticeable damage.

Remember that mending takes 10 minutes to cast per book, so keep that in mind if you wish to repair the damaged books.

Finishing up your inspection of the two areas reveals a trove of interesting facts. The ancient texts chamber contains several texts, some directly relevant to your assignment, and a few more leads to use within the library.

The general's logbook makes some references to the shining crusade, however it will need to be fixed before any useful information can be recorded.

A Silver Horn wrote:
This text describes in detail an enchanted silver horn capable of granting courage in times of need, which Taldor used for the fifth Army of Exploration and much later during the Shining Crusade, when it was shattered into several pieces. A priest of Aroden prophesied that even if re-forged, the instrument would never sound again, and it was given a hero’s burial. The text mentioned nothing of the horn’s present location.

The administrator's desk reveals another piece of cryptographic references, and by a stroke of luck, a second interesting lead right next to it! Additionally, the desk contains a pair of potions, apparently kept on hand by whomever is in charge of this library. Telos seems a bit to distracted by the layout of the room to uncover any clues... but his distraction bears fruit in and of itself! There appears to be a secret door hidden at the rear of the room, though there is no apparent obvious mechanism to open it.

Taldan Cipher wrote:
This text describes a cipher in which one must read the message backward, reading only every third letter; all other letters are ignored. The example the book provides is “RMNEB SISWD IILPL OTRSES,” which means “soldier.”
Failed Prophecies wrote:

Yes, you've found everything in rooms 5 and 6 according to the catalog

The mess from the swarm will take quite some time to clean up, but 20 minutes of mending spells will fix up the damaged books. Another 20 minutes would make the place spotless, but you can probably sweep that part under the rug if you find yourselves short on time. If you can cast make whole that would cut the time in half.

While searching for the mechanism to open the door, Kolris finds a dart hole in the wall pointing straight at the desk. With Telos's help he's able to trace it back to a lever underneath the desk that opens the door, but also is rigged to fire the dart trap.

"Yes, I think I should be able to; let's take a look here." Kolris approaches the mechanism cautiously, drawing a tightly-bound leather carrier out of his backpack. He carefully unrolls the leather to reveal a set of fine tools inside. He looks at the mechanism, then his tools, selecting one, another, and then a third after reviewing the mechanism one last time. He begins working on undoing the trap without springing it.

"Did you find a way to bypass the trap?" Telos asks Kolris.

With a little bit of tinkering, Kolris first figures out how the trap works, then figures out how to disable it, and then figures out how to simply pull the lever so he doesn't even have to bother disabling it. Simply by shifting the lever to an odd angle before pulling on it, the tension wire gets some slack and the trap never triggers. The door slides open revealing a short hallway that connects to a room appearing like a vault. The hallway is kept impeccably clean and appears to be rarely traversed.

Cabinets with two tall drawers each line the east and west walls of this room. A relief carving of a lion’s head dominates the south wall, hanging imperiously over a low stone step. Six freestanding statuettes of lions in various poses stand atop the furniture.

One crouches as if preparing to ambush its prey. The second is roaring as it leaps at prey. The third wears a yoke that is chained to a large block that the lion strains to pull. The fourth wears a tiny pair of spectacles and reads from an ornate scroll. The fifth is draped in the flag of Taldor. The sixth sits erect and wears a crown.

The stone step below the door has four shallow, cylindrical recesses that are the same size as the base on each of the six freestanding statuettes scattered about the room.

In addition to the statues, there are numerous texts scattered throughout the room. It is quite a haphazard assortment and has no running theme, so to research this room would take 1 hour divided by up to 5 people and uses the standard array of skill checks (History, Linguistics, Book-related Craft or Profession)

Untir, if you wish to cancel your mending spell to join up with the group let me know.

Copper stares intently throughout the room. "Something about these lions... Once again, I'm remembering the statues at the orphanage, but there's something more happening here. If you don't mind, I'd like to work with these lions."

She carefully looks over the lions and the divots in the floor.

Copper notices a secret door hidden behind the large lion statue. The divots appear to be a part of the same slab that conceals the panel. The divots are in a line beginning at the front of the lab and ending at the secret entrance.

Feel free to discuss this amongst yourselves for the day, I likely won't update again until late tonight (Pacific Standard Time).

Tam shrugs. "There's all the notes on the paintings throughout the library." She points to the king lion. "Monarchy..." She moves on to the studying lion. "Learning history..." She points next to the chained lion. "Perseverance." Finally she points to the Taldan lion. "Loyalty."

She sits down on the crouching lion, more out of habit than anything. "But what's the order, and why?"

Definitely matches the virtues of the blades that you saw enumerated in the library.

Seems close.

Also a clear match for their virtues.

Again, a clear match.

Another clear match.

Seems on the right track at least.

"I have to admit that I didn't pay much attention to the paintings. I just don't recall seeing those notes."

Kolris tries to remember the virtues listed in the library above. "But I do remember the virtues from upstairs; they were Innovation, Respect, Knowledge, Courage, Integrity, Honor, Excellence, and Glory. We used Honor, Courage, and Glory to open the door to get down here."

He pauses, clearly looking a bit befuddled.

"I admit, I'm not making much sense of this one. If you the paintings truly link to those four statues, I think that's a good place to start. Maybe we should just move the correct four into place, maybe the order isn't important?"

Here's a recap of the paintings since a few of you have been referring to them:

The Man Behind the Curtain wrote:
Simple but colorful tapestries hang along the north wall, giving the room a bright appearance despite the lack of sunlight and the dour portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III affixed tot he south wall. A brass plague on the frame of the portrait reads, "To serve Taldor, I must first learn the history of Taldor."
The Man Behind the Curtain wrote:
Several chairs are pushed against the wall, and a portrait of the Grand Prince hangs to the east, surveying everything in the room with magisterial authority. The brass plague on the frame of the portrait reads, "Persevere, persevere, persevere!"
The Man Behind the Curtain wrote:
Over the door hangs a portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III, portrayed wearing an especially smug grin. A brass plaque on the frame of the portrait reads, “A cunning lie is never told twice.”
The Man Behind the Curtain wrote:
These small and simple quarters are sparsely decorated with only simple furniture and a stoic portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III. A brass plaque on the frame of the portrait reads, “In the end, loyalty is its own reward.”
