A tengu scholar paces about the room a moment taking in the aesthetics of the room as he absentmindedly mutters to himself as he checks his person a few times, running his hands over his gear, mostly a scroll cases and potion vials, confirming each is secure and in the proper place before finally reaching his weapons, a blade and a cane, and ensuring they are safely stowed.

Thoughts:
Pathfinders I have not worked alongside of yet. I should so humility before I say anything to give any impression I think too highly of myself. Would self deprecating comments make me seem inadequate in their eyes? No, by virtue of me being called here alongside them that should make it clear I have a base level of skill despite anything I say.

He looks around for others as he seems satisfied with his level of preparation. "Greeting my comrades. I am Watts Helm. A dabbler in a variety of different areas of lore. I'm hopeful that my smattering of talents will be able to help you all in whatever we have been called here to accomplish."

Strolling in at a slow, deliberate pace, a pile of bronze clockwork with a gnome inside of it makes it into the courtyard. Her armor is rife with scorch marks and heat damage and bent gears; etched into it are all manner of what appear to be notes about future improvements. Many of the levers attached to it appear vestigial at best.

"Sorry I am late," the gnome says in a flat voice, more a greeting than an apology. "The flaw in my attempts to build a mirror-based light amplification system has been reinforced and the collateral damage has been kept to a minimum this time which is certainly a success so for now I should be able to focus on the next mission," she says with a proud smile. "Diri Lizzenbettolze," she tacks on abruptly, an afterthought. "If you would like to peruse my most current research on the similarities between all manners of various ways the humanoid body can absorb physical trauma I have complied a reasonably presentable introduction," she says, rifling through a cluttered backpack that has more paper than gear in it.

"Ah, here!" she exclaims, presenting a 17-page pamhplet written in shorthand for anyone willing to read, "The Lizzenbettolze: A Unifying Quantifier for Which to Measure Physical Trauma; An Abstract." The worn cover has a series of small illustrations: a halfling firing a longbow, an elf with a short sword, a gnome falling off a balcony (very clearly labelled as 10 ft. tall), and a human who seems to be holding a single bolt of lightning. Between each illustration is an equal sign.

As you open the door leading into the meeting place, you hear a lively discussion has already begun.

“Our manuscripts are sacrosanct! You must make an example of this thief!”

The voice echoes off walls where packed bookshelves compete for space with religious icons and statues. You have come to the Pathfinder Lodge in the Andoran city of Almas, a former cathedral of Aroden, now one of the Society’s foremost libraries. Wystorn Telfyr, librarian of the lodge, continues to rage. “I don’t expect you field agent types to grasp the gravity of such a theft.”

Behind Telfyr, Venture-Captain Brackett winces and tries to smile apologetically. “Somehow a thief sneaked past the wards of our reliquary,” continues the librarian, “and stole the Fleshforge Manuscript, a priceless example of the illuminator’s art, embellished in rare inks and exquisite gilt. Certain scholars of the arcane arts—myself excluded, of course—might also perhaps covet it for its content. The Fleshforge Manuscript details how Nex’s fleshforges in Ecanus supplied monstrous beasts for its ancient war with Geb. I myself have a modicum of talent for constructs.”

Telfyr gestures immodestly toward several homunculi shelving books around the library. “Yet I freely admit this manuscript has proven beyond even my comprehension.”

Venture-Captain Brackett unfurls a map on a table. “Thank you for favoring us with your presence so swiftly, fellow Pathfinders. Divination pinpoints the manuscript on a tiny island off Nex’s barren coast—the Monastery of the Unremitting Tide—here. The mission is twofold. Return the Fleshforge Manuscript safely back to the Society, and ensure this thief will never try to steal it again. Questions?”

Knowledge (History or Religion) DC 10+:
Echoes of an ancient war with its undead neighbor Geb define Nex’s wilderness. Plant life still refuses to grow on land touched by Geb’s necromantic blight, and Nex’s own fleshforges were responsible for many of the beasts that still roam its wastelands.

DC 20+:
The Monastery of the Unremitting Tide is a peaceful order of Vudrani monks dedicated to Irori. The order left Jalmeray for Nex 200 years ago. They revere Irori’s aspects of history and knowledge, focusing less on self-perfection and martial prowess.

Telfyr shakes his head when queried about the identity of the burglers. "I'm really not sure who would have taken it. A talented, evil mage might decipher the manuscript and recreate these nightmare creature. I doubt the document alone would suffice though."

Brackett adds "You have free reign of the lodge if you wish to look for any other clues. Telfyr noticed the scroll was missing four days ago, but it was likely missing for weeks. Time is not particularly of the essence, so take your time and charter whatever transport you deem necessary. There should be safe waters between here and the isle."

10+:
The door to the reliquary was locked the morning after the theft.

15+:
The reliquary houses artifacts worth much more than the manuscript. Strangely, the thief ignored them.

20+:
Until shortly before the theft, the West Chapel had housed the manuscript. Compared to the reliquary, the chapel is virtually unwarded except for, notably, an ancient hallow spell, cast shortly after Aroden’s death by clergy of Iomedae.

Thoughts:
The methods I have for entry are:
Demand and/or Request Entry. This would the the most reasonable if I am making a poor assumption of the nature of the combat inside. But based on the state of the structure I feel I can safely take a more aggressive option.
Scale the walls myself. I can guarantee the success but that would leave me inside in a combat while not aiding any of my allies with their own entry.
Pick the lock myself. I think I should be able to tackle the lock myself. There is potential it is trapped, but given the situation I I'm loath to hesitate.
Smash the door. I'm not capable of such a feat.
Let the others handle the door. At the very least August can remove the door with his blade. I rather not leave this place in an even more damaged state. Consulting the others would slow our entry down. I could spend the time to prepare for combat, but those same actions could be taken after the door is opened.

I'll take on door, take efforts to mitigate traps, defer to another member if they can reach the door before me.

There is a brief feeling of success, but it is quickly replaced with a sour feeling as he goes through his prior decisions and questions his own analysis, shaking his head at his own faulty lines of logic.

Thoughts:
This is what I expected prior to arrival, but I disregarded it based on the deterioration of the building and grounds surrounding. Was that a poor assumption to require that the area must be in well cared for condition for it to still be in use?

If that was a correct assumption, should I conclude these people are either not the monks I was expecting; maybe doppelgangers or undead who would either not care for maintaining the area or be unable perform those acts? No, unlikely. That would seem more appropriate as an poor attempt to save face. I should accept that I have made a mistake here.

Would I have taken this same action if the buildings were being maintained? Would I have assumed they would have no interest sparring from their greater focus on history and lore?

"I ... they ... it would seem that there are still practicing monks of the order here. It would seem best if .... I would suggest that we wait till the bout is concluded before introducing ourselves."

Watts pauses to glance at the frame of the doorway to reassess the damage marring the exterior.

Sport? Like them gladiators? I thought of tryin' that once but I'd be afraid I'd kill everyone. Don't think you're su'pose ta do that when gladiatoring, right Fahd?

The two certainly are not fighting to the death. Upon closer inspection they appear to be wrestling. The other 2 are more focused on the fight and don't seem to notice you. The master in the back likely notices you but does not make any move to acknowledge your arrival.

The door itself was closed by a bar on the backside with a simple lock. The lock itself was easy enough to pick. With Watts' expertise you were able to remove a small bracket from the door, allowing enough room to reach through and remove the bar, opening the door without any significant damage. Or at least without any noticeable damage given the poor condition it was already in.

Two towering edifices face each other across this meadow, one reverently decorated as a temple, the other austere as a library. Overgrown wildflowers choke former pathways between the buildings. At the center lies a sunken pool teeming with lotus flowers. An elegant tiger statue crouches, preparing to pounce, beside the pool. Several doors line the courtyard—one on the south side is slightly ajar. An alcove on the western side contains a plinth holding a wooden bust. In the northeast corner, steel glints from two weapon racks.

After realizing that they are sparing. Fandral sheaths his cutlass and looks on, moving closer to the grapplers. Waiting respectfully until the bout is over.

Fahd takes a seat on the ground, interested in watching the match play out. He smiles at August's response and whispers, "Yeah, murdering everyone gets you some dirty looks..."

"I fail to comprehend how they are willing to elapse time in unnecessary battle given the lackluster state of the edifice around them," Diri remarks, paying more attention to infrastructure than the match itself.

To prove a point, Diri will attempt to reassemble the door before the match finishes.

As the bout progresses Watts watches the movements and tries to analyze the movements of the combatants, compare them to both styles he has witnessed personally and those he has just learned from texts. This fight is worthy of study.

"I do have a similar line of thought to Diri. I do understand that physical training has a relatively equal place for many monks of Irori as mental training. That, however, still would not explain how the building has fallen into such disrepair. While there is a wide range of sects with different beliefs belonging to any divine being. I find the state of this building at odds with what I know of the god of self perfection."

As Fandral approaches, the older man at the back stands and moves forward.

"What business do you have at the monastery?"

Fandral looking to either side of him, noticing no one beside him at the present, answers.

He seems to ponder your response for a moment before yelling "The book-thieves have returned!" and adopting a fighting stance. The monks quickly end their wrestling match, and with a bit of a surprised look on their faces turn to engage you!

I don't think they wanna spar with us, Fahd! August decides that getting in the first strike is best, but he always thinks that way!

August, as stated earlier, would have led the group inside, especially when a fight was possibly happening. He would have been just north of Diri to protect her. If that sounds feasible to you, August will charge the yellow monk.
