Orin strokes his beard for a moment and then postulates, "The ledge is already weakened. It would not take much to collapse a much longer stretch, making it impossible to cross without an expert climber. We could also collapse a spot or two within the caves to make it impassible even if one were to make it across.

With the weakening of the stone, I do not even think it would take very long to accomplish the tasks.

"Good plan. But there will be more than one such tunnel. Still—what the usurper chieftain knows about these mines, the shaman will know better. Perhaps the kobolds can take effort to seal up all such secret tunnels; when we've taken down the Stag Lord, we can send guards or weaponry to reinforce their defenses as a show of goodwill."

Is the shaman with us currently? If not let's return to him: Klatoo, it appears the usurper chieftain is gone. He has fled in fear and shame. Your forces have conquered him. Well done.

"Let us quickly resolve matter here and provide and seek the aid we need. Our time here is limited. We have far more pressing matters to attend to." Ser Brandon states as he finds a spot to rest his legs, his blade on his lap. "Where is the chieftain?"

Orin leans over to Silas and whispers, "Does he mean where is the new chieftain? I suppose the offspring of the previous chieftain could be allowed to be the new chieftain, but I am not sure if kobolds view lines of succession as humans do. I wonder if they have something like a coronation ceremony?"

You make your way back to the main halls of the kobold warrens, finding the tribe nervous and anxious, awaiting your return.

The shaman Klatoo and the last chieftain's runt son Pun-pun greet you warmly, welcoming the news that Tartuk is gone. The kobolds send a small band to set traps and bars upon the back entrance to the mines, to prevent his returning. Others begin arranging for a small impromptu celebration to properly thank you for freeing the tribe.

The shaman and Pun-Pun assist you in searching Tartuk's chambers. The old chieftain had the kobolds pile all of their treasures and valuables in a heap in the eastern alcove of his den. This mound consists of a huge amount of worthless shiny objects, such as quartz and mica crystals, small clumps of silver ore, bits of metal, broken weapons and armor, and other garbage. In addition the pile contains 7,420 cp, 2,132 sp, 302 gp, a masterwork light metal shield, seven magical crossbow bolts etched with flame runes, a pair of magical grey leather boots, and a soiled leather bag. Inside the bag are the treasures stolen from the mites. The leather bag contains 321 sp, 249 gp, 13 pp, a plain brass wedding ring set with a single pearl (this is Svetlana’s wedding ring), and a pouch containing a single dose of glittering magical dust.

You also find Tartuk’s personal journal, written in a strange language, apparently a form of Undercommon. Tucked into the back of the journal is a single spell scroll.

As you are the saviors of the kobold peoples, the shaman informs you that you have the right of succession, or you may appoint someone to serve as chieftain in your stead. They seem nervous at this offering, but they seem determined to honor their old ways, especially in the light of how far Tartuk took them, and the damage the group sustained as a result. Possible candidates for leadership are the aged Klatoo, diplomat Meepox, or the sole heir Pun-Pun.

The kobolds further inform you that there has been activity at the front of the mines, that one pinkskin who guarded your mounts has left with the others, leaving a new pinkskin there, awaiting you perhaps. They have not approached him, he seems content to wait, watching over the horse train.

Silas asks, in Draconic, if they're willing to let the group discuss for a while.

In common, to the group—and especially to the Baron—he raises a few points for consideration.

"First, we're going to take a few of these items. The wedding ring, the journal—which we can read with magic later. I don't think we should rightly take anything else from the sootscales, unless it seems necessary in our fight against the Stag Lord."

"As for right of succession—I don't want to place one of us in charge of their people, as that might just lead to trouble down the line. Instead, maybe we could ask that they honor some tradition of inheritance or democracy, whichever fits the most with their customs, with the caveat that the new chieftain and his successors swear a treaty of perpetual non-agression and friendship to the Barony of the Greenbelt, or something like that."

Knowledge (local) on Kobold traditions: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

"And, lastly, we need to think about the silver mines. That is a big economic necessity for our growing colony. I think we should either request that they allow a certain number of our miners in a back region of their mines, with us sharing profits or paying a weekly fee for this use, or ask them to increase their mining and trade food and quality tools or weapons for the silver they mine, on terms favorable to us, as any trade at all should improve their quality of life. I believe we should also appoint a representative of the Barony to regularly visit the Sootscales or live nearby in an aboveground guardhouse, in order to keep local tensions under control, and that Ayerth or myself would be best suited for the job."

Male Human Sorcerer (Infernal) - Level 1 HP: 6

Klatoo we have much to discuss. First, how is a leader normally chosen? Second, we want to trade for all the silver you are willing to part with. In exchange, we are willing to have some of our people come help guard the mine, and protect you in case Tartuk or other bandits comes back. Some of our kin may be able to also show you how mine better. If you would be open to our help, we would be very grateful.

Orin gestures and mutters something in Dwarven. "Nocht do mianach shúile marcanna féin ar an Ealaín . Braith Magic"

Dwarven:
"Reveal to mine own eyes marks of the Art. Detect Magic."

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Orin shrugs. "I disagree, Silas. I think we should keep those grey boots. The bolts, though, the kobolds can no doubt use in defense of their home, though we too could easily use them against our next target. I think the shield should go to the new chief, whoever he may be, as a badge of office, as one would protect his people. I would suggest keeping a little more of the coin, as they have offered it to us, but possibly not all."

Eying the pile again, Orin strokes his beard thoughtfully. "Given a little time, I may be able to magically mend a few of the weapons for use by the kobolds and possibly some of the armor."

Orin glances at the journal. When another opens it to look inside, he gestures to the book, and asks, "May I take a closer look?" He flips through a few pages, and states, "It is a little different than what I am use to, but I can read it."

Orin's Eyes:
A quick glance of the journal tells Orin a bit of Tartuk's background.

Tartuk was actually a gnome sorcerer who unfortunately fell prey to a poorly tuned reincarnation spell. His change to one of his most hated foes seems to have driven him mad. Flipping through the pages, Orin discovers the gnome has been infiltrating kobold tribes and forcing them into battles against their neighbors, ultimately to fail in the process. This seems to be the third such tribe he has done this to, but it will take 3 or 4 hours of reading to get a full gist of the story.

Klatoo mentions that normally the strongest kobold bullies the weaker members of the tribe into accepting their leadership and protection. That has not always worked out best, as illustrated here. In the past they have had inherited leaderships, the bigger and strongest offspring, but Pun-Pun seems to be scrawny rather than strong, a thinker rather than a bully. You think Pun-Pun would work for big leader others would fear? Chieftain must make the tribe safe from other tribes, other enemies.

The kobolds are happy to have training and assistance in reopening the silver mine, and interested in a partnership whereby both parties would benefit. Goods and trade in exchange for raw silver, they can go for that. They are open to terms if you have any to start.

As Orin reads the journal for a moment, his eyes widen in surprise, then narrow. "Silas, Ayerth, this one" hold the journal a little higher to indicate the previous chieftan, "was truly..."

He pauses for a moment and glances around, eyes lingering on the now happier kobolds. Thinking to himself, If I let those of the tribe know that Tartuk was even more of an outsider than they realize, then that may sour them somewhat on the idea of co-operation. It would be best to discuss that in private with my comrades. Coming to a conclusion, Orin simply shrugs and weakly smiles at the two elves. "I suppose we can discuss it later."

Male Dwarf Wizard: 3 | HP: 10/21 | AC:17 T:12 FF:13 | CMD:14 | Fort: +7 Ref:+4 Will:+5 | Init: +5 | Perc: +1

Orin watches more of the deliberations and interjects at one point, "There are many kinds of strength. Meepo is likeable, and that has and will help him when discussing matters with others outside the tribe. Pun-Pun is clever, and that is a different kind of strength, which is also very useful in the world outside."

"Sometimes it is not creating fear that is useful, but seeing the good moments, the opportunities, and making others see it."

Do what you will for the leadership of the tribe and trade. I will help ensure their safety and train some of their warriors and some more men to help guard their mines. After all, Silver!" he says with a gleam in his eyes.

"Now about what we've found. We risked our necks and one of us nearly went of a cliff. We are entitled to reward for it. Besides our equipment doesn't come free and we have a lot of expenses and battles to fight if we are to keep our lands. Forget not that we our own enemies who would see us fail." he says in a determined voice, clearly unwilling to give a up share of the treasure they have found.

"Perhaps we should instal a council. The Shaman will be the spiritual leader of course. The other three will form an advisory council and they will remain under the Baron as a protectorate."

"We need to take the magic items and a portion of the coins. In return the Baron can gift back items we have, like mining equipment, things that will start an economy. Someday we could even build a mint here."

"And I believe we should discuss what you found in that book. Did it explain how he was sickening his people? Or why this Kobold here was yellow?"

"It sounds like we're overthinking this. The kobolds simply want one leader, and want that leader to have the backing of the Barony's military might."

"Ayerth, a show of gratitude—taking some of the coins—might be helpful in establishing such a show of strength. Especially if we only take coins whose minting indicates they were taken by the mites from citizens of the Barony, like that ring was. But, Ser Brandon, we're not here to rob those weaker than us—and believe me when I say we could be making this much money every week if we can get a proper mining operation up and running."

Orin shakes his head slightly and looks Ayerth in eye meaningfully. "Later, friend."

"Silas, I think Ser Brandon is just excited about the possibility of the silver mine itself. Let us not forget Klatoo sent Meepo to gain aid using the offer of raw silver as a motivator. I think I would have come to help without it, but, in a fashion, they expected to trade for help."

Lowering his voice a bit, Orin also posits, "Besides, I am not certain of the niceties, but to refuse something may also be seen as an insult, as if you went someplace and refused a hospitable meal. A good portion of the stones and items are not precious materials, as they have not trained their eyes to be discerning, but they have value to the kobolds, themselves."

Male Human (Chelish) Cavalier/3 (HP 16/26 | AC:22 | T:11 | FF:21 | CMB +7 | CMD 18 | Fort:+5 | Ref:+2 | Will:+2 | Init:+3 | +6 Bluff, +8 Climb ,+7 Diplomacy, +8 Handle Animal, +8 Intimidate, +6 Perform(Orator), +7 Ride, +6 Sense Motive, +8 Swim |

Ser Brandon puffs up at the insinuation of him trying to rob anyone. You impugn my honour! Have a care, for if we were not allies and bound by code, I might feel compelled to take action for such a slight. When enemies are defeated and booty is found, it is due to the victors. We take what we deserve. They are our allies. I would not take what is rightly theirs. He pauses for moment and takes a deep breathe, reeling his temper in.

Nay, they are our allies and we leave theirs to them and take what is ours. We will aid them with our support and our steel and trade with them fairly. I am not a merchant to work out the balance of weights on scales but let what is fair be done. I leave it you Baron. he finishes much calmer and regaining his composure.

Male Elf Wizard 3 AC 13, touch 13, FF 10 Init +7; Senses low-light vision; Perception +10 Fort +3, Ref +5, Will +5; +2 vs. enchantments

"This is a liberation of an ally, not the subjugation of a rogue state. To refuse their offered treasure is to tell them they have nothing of value. Taking magical items they cannot wear or use and a paltry few coins opens the beginning of a trade relationship. We will provide them with tools in return, which will generate wealth for the Barony as a whole and eventually will be used to strengthen their position."

"By letting the Shaman be seen representing his people with the Baron we are giving him recognition of legitimacy and the understanding he has powerful allies.

"Having allies in the region united for a common good is a boon. If we are seen as the invader/oppressor in the area groups will rally against us. We also must be seen as being in a position of power or we will be seen as inconsequential in our influence."

Male Elf Rogue/3

"I am with Ayerth....but it is ultimately up to the Baron on how to conduct business with them"

"Also if we are seen as weak and insult them then we will lose an ally and they may choose someone else to side with...I think we should have a talk with them and start negotiations and see what they offer in return for what we can"

"But as I said its up to the Baron"

Darkblade, could you give us a quick synopsis of each Kobold? Also it sounds like the Shaman showed real leadership as being the only cohesive leader of opposition to the false chief, is that true?

Orin can say, without giving much else away, that Tartuk was poisoning the tribal members that opposed him. He used curses and illusions to discolor their scales then secretly finished them off with a host of herbal and mineral toxins as "evidence" of his goddess' power. Time and care should restore anyone suffering, now that Tartuk is unable to keep up his foul ministrations.

The following information can be gained over the next few hours, as the party meets with and celebrates with the tribe. You may want to address Grailmont's replacement outside the mines. It is rather inconsiderate that you have left him sitting for days real world time.

Shaman Klatoo is just over 40 years old, venerable for a kobold. He has lived to see three chieftains of the Sootscales, this last false chieftain Tartuk, the previous Chief Sootscale, and that chief's father, also Chief Sootscale. He has tried to lead the tribe spiritually along the lines of their ancestors, holding to traditions and keeping the faith in their kobold and draconic heritages intact.

Meepox is half as old as Klatoo, a clutchling of the shaman's youngest clutch sister. He is an able kobold, a warrior and speaker liked by a fair number of the tribe. He has some detractors as he was allowed to live by Tartuk and served as the false chieftain's "advisor" and spokesperson. Meepox had the unfortunate duty of sharing Tartuk's edicts with the rest of the tribe and calling out those chosen to participate in the many failed raids Tartuk sent out, both against the mites and the goblins. Meepox feels his duty is to the tribe and to whomever leads it, though his personal feelings may not be in agreement with it's direction.

Pun-Pun is clearly not a normal kobold, barely into adulthood, still in his early teens. He bears evidence of a mixed heritage, having some aspects more draconic than reptilian, and is somewhat scrawnier than most other adult kobolds. Shaman Klatoo relates that once upon a time, the Sootscales were the followers and disciples of a great dragon which lived in the marshes to the west. Legends tell that the dragon would take favored followers into his "family" for a time, and that to this day, on occasion, a clutchling is born who is a throwback to that old bloodline. Klatoo suspects Pun-Pun to be such a throwback. Chieftain Sootscale did not show the child favoritism, fearing he would grow overly proud and obnoxious, much as the dragon became late in it's life, before a party of adventurers ended it's reign and chased the kobolds into the east. The past chieftain had hoped to live long enough to see whether Pun-Pun developed fully into his heritage or withered on the vine, wishing for fate to decide which of his children would be most worthy of replacing him.

I think the throwback should be the new chief, after some training. Would it be too akward to have Klatoo run things while Pun-Pun comes to Olegton for a few months, possibly with an honor guard, and gets an education?

At some point, Orin will notice the scroll folded near the back of the journal, and want to get a better look. "Excuse me, good fellows. I need a little more light for reading."

Orin trundles outside, journal in hand, squinting even in what is now probably nearing sunset, and notices the fellow the kobolds had mentioned even as he is about to cast a simple divination. Noticing he's geared a little better than the rest of the soldiers with a heavy steel shield and a complete suit of chainmail rather than the smaller shields and leathers, Orin's interest is piqued. "Ho there, good sir."

Orin smiles at the new face. "I take it you have reason more than a general appreciation for natural beauty to be out this way." There is a small squeak from the direction of his backpack, and he mutters, "Oh yes. I was about to forget."

I delivered it to General Grailmont and after a few choice words he instructed me to wait here for the Baron and let him know what is going on. It seems that Castellan Depreux arrived in Olegton early and is demanding proof that the colonies ruling body is dealing with the Stag Lord. He has dispatched three Crimson Guard patrols to find the Baron and bring him back to town immediately."

Ser Brandon emerges from the mines and to his surprise finds Grailmont and most of the soldiers having departed and in their place on lone warrior. He examines the man and his weapons and comes to the conclusion that though no weakling this man is more of a tactical fighter than a brawler. Possibly even a skilled tactician.

"Hail there." he calls out to the man conversing with Orin. "I am Ser Brandon. By what name are you known and pray tell, do you what has become of Grailmont and the remaining soldiers?" he says in a commanding tone, though not devoid of politeness, assuming command in the absence of Grailmont.

After due consideration, and with the advice of the guardians: the best course of action would be to leave klatoo in charge, for one month, while Pun-pun comes with us and does some training with General Grailmont and others to better prepare him for military situations. After one month, pun-pun will return, and can then assume the role of chieftain, as he is the biggest and the strongest of his father's living sons. Meepox was important in getting our help here and should be rewarded as such, I would like for him to continue to help pun-pun by being the sootscale ambassador to olegton. Is this acceptable to the sootscales?

In the mines:
Ser Brandon is quite pleased with the Baron's suggestion. "It is not a perfect solution, but a perfect solution rarely exists. The Baron has once again show his keen mind in this diplomatic solution. May it strengthen both sides. I hope the Kobolds accept, we have much to do and we cannot afford to tarry here till a solution is arrived at."

The kobolds are accepting of the suggestions for leadership, and are willing to allow both Pun-Pun and Meepox to travel with your group to learn more about you, and to help with arrangements for others to arrive and assist with turning the mine into a productive venture for all involved.

The kobolds still offer the evening celebration and a place to safely stay for the night, before continuing on your journey.

General Grailmont left only your mounts and immediate supplies. He took the wagon, the remaining guards, and even the prisoner detail with him when he left. You have enough stores to with luck find the Stag Lord, launch a quick offensive, then return to Olegton.

Brampton follows Orin and Ser Brandon inside the kobold den. They find the Baron with the other just finishing up the details on the leadership of the tribe. He introduces himself and begins to deliver the news.

"Castellan Depreux arrived in Olegton in the middle of the night and caused quite a commotion. He demand that the baron and the council attend him immediately. When he was informed that you were not in town he flew into a rage and told the captain of the Crimson Guard to find you and bring you back. He had the remaining council members removed from there homes and is using them for himself and his officers claiming right of imperial domain."

"General Grailmont has gone back to Olegton to see if he can calm things down. I am not sure he has the right personality to do this but he may be able to slow down the Crimson Guard patrols if he encounters them on his way back."

"As for myself I arrived in Olegton a few hours before Depreux did and had settled down for the night. My old friend Oleg came to me to see if I could find you be before the Crimson Guard did and deliver this message to you. I was able to slip out of town before they could lock the place down. He thought that the best place to find you would be at the silver mine."

"Right... well, this throws a wrench into things, and not in a good way. Would you be willing to ride with us a little further? Our intention was to take out the Stag Lord before the emissaries arrived, and help whom we could along the way, but it seems those impatient Imperials got bored of needlessly hassling our caravans and moved up their timeline. If we leave now, we can still stay ahead of them, and when we return we'll point out their fears were for naught as we were following our duty to end local banditry the whole time."

"Olgeton had been friendly to me and I am planning on making it my home. It would be an honor to serve the Baron and help in his quest to take down the Stag Lord. As for a leadership role on the council I am not sure. I am a simple law abiding man with some skill at arms. If the Baron has a job for me that can use those skills I would gladly accept it."

I think the Warden or Marshall jobs are open

"Maybe we should worry about that when we finish this foray and there still is an Olegton left to discuss. I support the Baron's decision regarding kobold leadership, and I think we should probably get moving before the Imperials come knocking."

Are we rested? I'd suggest letting the envoys catch up with us right outside the Stag Lord's Keep and forcing them to join us in the fight, but Silas isn't that crafty—or trusting of the throne.

"I agree to keep moving and try to rid the Stag Lord" makes a fist and thinks to himself then I can be at peace with myself."So when to continue with the mission at hand?"

what is the time frame here? What time of day is it, how long has it been since we finished throwing irakli off a cliff, and how long since we fought with the mites? I am under the impression that we should rest here for the night, then head to the stag lord in the morning.

You arrived at the kobold mines at noon. You freed Pun-Pun, then met with Klatoo. You then proceeded on to face Tartuk. When he fled, you chased him through the lower mines and out onto the cliff face. This led to the incident with Irakli, followed by your return through the mines to the kobold chambers.

You are now preparing for a celebratory meal with the kobolds and discussing future leadership and relations with Olegton.

It is now evening, nearly time for dinner.

Brampton speaks up, "I think we have time to send the night. I move much faster than the Crimson Guard and I knew where I was going."

I can't imagine what kobolds put on the table for a celebratory meal. Maybe we should go now.

Considering Orin's history, maybe kobold food isn't such a good idea. :D

So... what was the aura on the grey boots? And, if you don't mind, what was the scroll?

Orin will take a moment and thank Brampton. "Even if they are somewhat foul, thank you for bringing us tidings. A small, or even lone, rider in the green belt wilds risks quite a bit in travel." Orin sketches a small salute to the young fighter, and offers, "If you wind up needing anything, like another good sword or shield, let me know."

"We aren't going anywhere in a hurry in the dark.I suggest we rest the night and be off early in the morning and ride hard to the Stag Lord. We need to deal with him before the Crimson Guard cross us. Tonight we have a chance to improve relations with a silver mine. Let us not squander it." he ways with a smile.

The kobold feast may not be to everyone's liking, but they seem eager to thank you for their salvation and show you the hospitality of the mines. They serve a sparse table, communally taking from the offered pots on a variety of scrap board plates and woven lichen mats. The fare includes a variety of candied millipedes, deep-fried bat served on mossy noodles, baked wild onion stuffed bullfrogs, a thick cream of cave slug soup, and a few "butter" broiled snails on a bed of wild greens. A slightly bitter, fermented milk of some kind is offered as a beverage, or water from a small spring if preferred.

Conversations are mostly amongst yourselves of the three kobold representatives, Pun-Pun, Klatoo, and Meepox. Most other kobolds seem to only speak Draconic, rather than a pidgin form of the common Taldan tongue.

The kobolds offer you a chamber to yourselves if you wish it, to sleep out of the weather instead of under the stars. They can build a small fire for you and provide thick albeit perhaps scratchy reed and lichen mats, enough for all to bed down. They apologize that they have no blankets or other articles to offer, though some of the kobolds are willing to do without if you need them.

For simplicity sake, the boots are of Elvenkind, the scroll of Fly, the bolts +1 Flaming.

For Orin:
If Orin spends a few hours reading over the journal, he discovers the false chieftain was actually once a gnome sorcerer who began to succumb to the Bleaching. To stave this off, he turned to dark and foul worship, eventually finding solace in a succubus named Amerisha.

She made a deal with him, and for the souls of all in his village, she would spare him the Bleaching. He arranged to have an army of goblins attack the village, but was discovered meeting with them moments before the battle, securing passage through the goblinoid lines.

The townsfolk thought he was attacking the goblins on their behalf, and rallied to his aid. The gnomish villagers beat back the goblins, but Tartuk himself was killed by a vengeful goblin in retribution.

The townsfolk, to honor his "heroism", sought aid from druids south of the River Kingdoms. A scroll of reincarnation was secured, but the gnome gods are fickle and unforgiving of those who turn on their own.
They cursed him into becoming a kobold, one of the most vile enemies of the kobold race.

While the villagers tried to overlook the change, Tartuk became infuriated and poisoned the village well, killing nearly all who drank from it before fleeing in the night. For not killing all of them, Amerisha refused to honor her original agreement, instead demanding three times the souls as before, all now to be delivered in her name, for Tartuki's failure.

He has set about deceiving, poisoning, ruining and damning kobold tribes across the region. He has most recently turned his eye to the Sootscale tribe. He began selectively poisoning them, starting false wars in honor of Amerisha, and dedicating each dead kobold as an offering to his goddess. He hoped to someday meet the demon's demands and be cured, both of his Bleaching and of his transformation into a kobold.
