Male Elf Rogue/3

"Who Would you suggest?"

"Klatoo it is, lead on."

Ser Brandon smiles curiously, surprised that this act of generosity has led them to profit. He spurrs Shadowmist forward, "Lets get this moving, I believe we're already delayed. Lets not forget what awaits us once we return from this adventure."

Does this shaman Klatoo have relatives named Barada and Nikto?

Squinting in the brighter than normal sunlight, Orin nods in agreement at Ayerth's comment. "Yes. Let us make our way to shade soon."

I will take you to shaman Klatoo, he is in the caves. He will talk to you, he likes to talk.

It is roughly 30' from the pen to the entrance to the Sootscale mine. An outcropping of large boulders emerges from the weathered face of the hillock. A narrow opening in the rock leads into the darkness beyond. A fallen sign leans against the side of the cave entrance, and another cage, this one made of branches and sticks which sits on the far side of the entrance. It appears currently empty.

Just inside the mine entrance, an alcove to the west contains a locked iron gate, in the room beyond, three rope nooses hang from holes in the ceiling above rusty iron hooks set in the floor.

A lone kobold stands watch here, crouched behind one of the big rocks at the cave entrance. Once he spots you, approaching with Pun-pun, he chirps loudly in surprise. The kobold hesitates for a few moments, confused, then makes an unusual decision. He hails the PCs and cries out, Wait! Wait! I wanna talk!

Draconic:

Huh, wonder if this guy's gonna get hostile.

"Speak fast, then. We are here to save your tribe, and it probably isn't a good idea to dawdle."

The kobold stands upright at Silas' comment.

Draconic:
I walk like a good Sootscale, I do not waddle. Nakpik is good Sootscale, good guard. You halt now. You not Sootscales.

He holds his spear at angle, point up, but not pointing at the group.

Pun-pun pushes past the others getting close to the other kobold, one more grey-green in the color of typical kobolds, only a slight darkening at the lower edges of his scales. Pun-pun stands nearly as tall, his arms a bit shorter by comparison, with his legs and torso a bit broader, his head longer, narrower. The other kobold likewise does not have the strange frills on his back and shoulders.

The yellow kobold looks back and you and gives you a strange wink, his eyelids not really designed for the gesture. He then looks at the guard and speaks.

Draconic:
Shhh, they here to see Klatoo. They have big important business now. You still stuffy Nakpik, you let them by or take them to him. Is what chiefy stinkpoo would not like, yeah.

Ser Brandon rides forward to the side of the Baron. "I am ready for what is needed to done. We must be quick, act with the element of surprise. Time is against us. Let us deal with this usurper quickly and have our allies in place. I think the General would agree."

"Yes... looks like this guard sides with the shaman."

Draconic:

"May we go see Klatoo, then? We've recovered the statue, and would like to see your tribe healed as quickly as possible thereby."

The second kobold considers Pun-pun for a moment, looking over the group arrayed behind him. He nods twice quickly, pulling a key from his belt. In draconic he mentions something low and then he and Pun-pun reach up, pulling a couple of ropes ending in small metal rings down, hidden by rocky outcroppings. They pull the rings down and hook them on a few small hooks sticking up from the ground along the walls.

The kobold then proceeds back into the unlit room, the key sounding as it is turned in a lock. He pulls the rusty but oiled gate open, then whispers again to Pun-pun.

Pun-pun turns to you and says, in common, Nakpik will let us through and not tell the chief we are here. I can take you to see Klatoo, but you must promise, promise on the scales of Apsu you will not hurt Klatoo. He is always nice to pun-pun. Ok?

"Yes, I promise on the scales of Apsu."

In Elven:

"...whatever the hell that means..."

Taking 10 in Knowledge Religion Silas remembers Apsu is the patron deity of all good and metallic dragons, and one of the oldest gods of the Great Beyond.

Pun-pun leads your group through the gate, Nakpik closing and securing the gate once everyone has passed through. Even for kobolds, the tight tunnel openings are considerably cramped. Small creatures can move through the tunnels in single file, while Medium creatures must squeeze through.

Just beyond the tunnel openings, about 30' out on a curving down slope, a pair of shadowy alcoves flank the main passageway. Two kobold guards wait within the alcoves. As Pun-pun passes, he hisses the days password, apparently one of the things Nakpik whispered to your strange guide. While looking apprehensive at your group, the kobolds remain firm in their posts, watching but not reacting to everyone as they pass.

About another 30' or so, the passage branches off to the East or continues towards the South. Pun-pun leads you East, the passage still sloping downwards though arcing back to the North for about 15', opening into a larger chambers, well light and with room to stand upright.

The air in this large cave feels warm and close, thick with a reptilian stink mixed with smoke and burnt meat. Numerous beds of furs lie scattered throughout the room amid smoldering cookfires, while to the south, a ten-foot-wide alcove contains a large mound of furs framed by dozens of sticks on which are mounted the skulls of many birds and small animals, all smeared with ash. Two other passages lead out of this communal area, one to the East, the other to the Southwest. Overall this room is about 30' by 30' in size, much of the area filled with the kobolds' livelihood.

Six kobolds are scattered around the room, startled by the sudden appearance of your group. Pun-pun barks something to the group, silencing them before they can raise an alarm or jump to any offense. An older, somewhat infirm kobold rests upon the mound of furs, bedecked in an assortment of fetishes and talismans which seem to announce quite clearly, "Shaman".

Pun-pun turns to the group addressing you in Draconic, for the benefit of his audience.

Draconic:
You are now in the presence of his great spirit self, our shaman and mentor, Klatoo the Ashen, descendent of Apsu, Speaker of the Elder's Wisdom.

Turning to Klatoo, he adds in soft Draconic...

Draconic:
These pinkskins are here to see you. They don't seem to like chiefy poo-head. You should hear them, they look tough.

Male Dwarf Wizard: 3 | HP: 10/21 | AC:17 T:12 FF:13 | CMD:14 | Fort: +7 Ref:+4 Will:+5 | Init: +5 | Perc: +1

Orin simply follows along, happy now to be underground. Not a speaker of Draconic, he remains silent, listens to the inflections of the alien words, waits for others to translate, and nods at Echo's reply.

Silas holds forth the statue.

The kobold chieftain quickly waddles over to Silas, and reaches out his hands towards it, pausing only a moment before summoning up his courage, and then quickly grasps the figurine, pulling it from the elf and holding it above his head.

He seems to stand still, the demonic statue held high, then turning slowly showing the thing to his fellow kobolds. As nothing happens he starts to smile slightly, and with a growl, hurls the statue across the room and smashes it against the far wall. The other kobolds seem to cower a bit, startled and scared at the act.

The shaman lowers his arms, looking at his hands, palms down, then up, then looks out at his people.

Draconic:
This proof. This what I said. Tartuk false. Tartuk's goddess false. There no curse. There no plague. We can be free. Tartuk false chief. Tartuk must be gone. Who free Sootscales? Who take this monster?

Apparently the false chieftain, has been telling his people the curses come from the statue, like it is some kind of avatar or something. He is strengthening his followers belief in their established God, whom the Shaman serves."

"He has been doing something. I fear poison. I stand by the supposition that something is going on with the kobold we rescued. He seems to be something more than just a Kobold. We need to protect him, and the Shaman."

The shaman calls his people together, prompting a mini-huddle of the creatures. They hiss and whisper together, making it difficult to discern one speaker from the next, or the exact content of the discussion. After a few moments, the group breaks up, the collect kobolds moving back behind Klatoo, with Pun-pun reluctantly stepping forward.

Klatoo says I am to take you to see Chief Tartuk, the last spoken as if it tasted nasty coming up. The chief took our old chief's hall, it is only a short distance away. I will take you when you are ready.

The other kobolds, nodding and grinning strange reptilian smiles, don't seem to understand what you are saying together, but they seem excited at the prospects of being out from under a demon's curse, and hopefully with it, their disliked chieftain.

Make it so Number Two.

Pun-pun leads your group out of the chambers through a smaller tunnel off to the right of the one from which you entered the kobold's main camp. This tunnel runs south-west about forty feet then turns sharply east, running straight about another forty feet. Ahead the passage ends in what may have once been a fine tapestry, but years of neglect leave it a frayed and mildewed mess.

This last stretch, Pun-pun motions for you to be quiet, himself starting to creep along slowly and deliberately. In a whisper he hisses Tartuk beyond curtains, him and his nasty pet birdie.

Does the party wish to approach stealthily?

If he'll allow it, Silas casts Protection from Evil on the shaman in preparation.

The shaman and the other kobolds are waiting behind a few spaces, still a bit intimidated and afraid of Chief Tartuk.

You may cast the spell if you wish, but you sense the shaman may likely turn and run if your group cannot convince Tartuk to renounce his throne and leave the Sootscales.

Silas will hold his action then. If all of the kobolds are hesitant, he'll step forward to show that he's not afraid (since he has grand dreams of one day turning these dens into an industrious silver mining town), and announce a rather personal ultimatum:

Draconic:

"Greetings, Tartuk. I am Silas Lavein, Treasurer of the Greenbelt, and Speaker-of-your-Language on behalf of the Baron Echo Syne. We have dealt with your mite enemies, and returned your precious statue, which we have shown possesses no magic on its own. Shaman Klatoo agrees, and argues that this proves you a liar who has murdered your fellow Sootscales."

"On behalf of both the Baron's authority and that of the Sootscale laws, we are here to ask you to step down as 'Chieftain' and leave these lands. As you can see, both of our peoples agree on this issue, and as we visibly possess much finer armor, weaponry and magic than your guards, a fight would not be in your interest."

Male Elf Wizard 3 AC 13, touch 13, FF 10 Init +7; Senses low-light vision; Perception +10 Fort +3, Ref +5, Will +5; +2 vs. enchantments

Ayerth steps forth with Silas, ready to cast if necessary.

Ser Brandon stands ready as Silas confronts the false chief in his native tongue, his hand resting on his sword, adrenaline pumping, ready for the fight. "The little little dragons better behave else we'll show them what happens when you defy the Baron and his allies."

Silas, Ayerth and Ser Brandon alone approach the remaining 40' to the tapestry. There is silence from beyond it, though light filters through the threadbare curtain.

You wait a few moments longer, hesitant still as you alone were brave enough to advance. When no reply comes, Silas pulls the curtain aside to issue his ultimatum again.

The walls of this cavern are decorated by a rickety wooden frame formed from clean-cut branches lashed together with gut and twine. Banners cut from two-foot-wide strips of old blankets and horsehides hang from floor to ceiling, covering much of the walls. The sloppily painted banners bear dozens of primitive icons and mystic symbols. A large cauldron filled with bubbling red liquid boils in the center of the room. A lone kobold, lays on the floor before the cauldron, clutching at a jagged slash across his throat. He looks at your group, his eyes starting to glaze over. It is one of the kobolds who was standing watch when you passed by from Nakpik's gate.

The chamber is roughly 10x10, opening into a 5x10 alcove on the east, a 15x15 alcove on the west, and a narrow 5x15 diagonal den to the north-east.

Ser Brandon watches the sight in shock, stunned for a moment before his reflexes take over. He draws his his sword and raises his shield at the ready, searching for any foes that might spring out of hiding, while the elf attempts to healing the dying kobold.

@Ayerth, where are you standing at the moment, and in what area are you focusing the detect magic cone?

Silas:
You reach out to lay hand upon the wounded kobold when you notice a great rush of heat, your hand taking Fire: 1d4 ⇒ 1 burn damage. You realize the kobold is not real, but some kind of figment over the room's small cook pit. Your spell did not release, you still have the held charge.

@Orin, the room has mined stone walls, but nearly every surface is covered in wooden frames mounted with cloth coverings, hangings, or banners.

@Ser Brandon I will consider you are in the doorway unless directed otherwise.

Orin moved towards the den. Silas moved to the wounded kobold, struggling to hold in his gashed throat. Ser Brandon is standing in the doorway. Where is everyone else at the moment please?

He is looking to see if he can find someone hiding who may have mage armor cast on themselves, or if there is an obvious magic item or spell effects at play here.
