GM Dak |
You make your way through the halls you already explored with no issue, at least until you reach the dark room. As you make your way through the room and you all start to leave a dark shadow appears and attacks Olik who is in the rear.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Damage-STR: 1d6 ⇒ 4
It's claws reach inside Olik and tear away at his very being.
-4 Str damage on Olik. Applying a -2 to Str based checks
Batah: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Jirani: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Olik: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Tamarie: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Virgil: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
???: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Round 1
>Olik, Jirani, Virgil, Monster, Tam, Batah
Olik Vogenson |
A cold shiver flows through Olik at the shadows touch.
"I thought we'd done away with this blasted thing!"
Stepping back he brings about a song of life to once again cover his hand with positive energy.
5' step back, cast CLW and hold the charge
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
Jirani drops his ranseur and squeezes through his allies to get to Olik's side. When he emerges from the hall, he finishes drawing his longsword and feints an attack from behind his buckler.
Ready action: if the creature closes on Olik, aid another to give Olik +2 to his next attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
I just noticed that you can't do aid another if the enemy's not in melee range of your ally, and since Olik took a step back, Jirani's aid will have to wait. :)
Tamarie Yangrit |
"Blasted thing!" Tamarie says, even as she remembers her arrows were not very efficient.
She moves up, and tries to copy Jirani as he aids the people who have positive energy at their disposal.
Move to a position on the side, draw dagger, ready action to aid Olik or the cleric on his attack.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Crit aid!
Virgil "Firecask" Anvilsinger |
"Sweet barleybrew, what is that thing?" Virgil exclaims as he scrambles to pull a glass phial of steel-grey liquid from his jacket and smashes it on his left arm. The liquid quickly evaporates and creates a barely visible haze around the dwarf.
Extract of Shield as per the actual spell. +4 Shield Bonus to AC. And it applies to incorporeals. Drinking an extract is for boring people. ;)
Batah ibn Abbala |
Not sure if I should wait for the creature to go, or if I should just post my turn, but here it is
Stepping forward with his holy symbol of Sarenrae held before him, Batah calls out, "By the power of the goddess of light and good, I call down her fiery wrath upon you creature of night and death"
He is including the whole party in the area, so those who are wounded will also get healed
Channel Positive energy: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Batah has Sun's blessing, which gives a +1 to damage to undead and they do not get channel resistance.
GM Dak |
Jirani, I'll assume you delay until you can do what you said above
Olik calls on his powers as his hand glows very slightly with a whitish-blue light. Jirani waits to get into position to best help Olik when he moves in to attack. Virgil pulls out a phial and covers himself in it leaving behind a magical glow that covers him.
The shadowy creature moves up to Olik, while Jirani takes the chance to move up as well trying to distract it from Olik. The creature reaches out toward Olik once again to attack, intent on further draining the life out of him.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Str: 1d6 ⇒ 5
It reaches inside of him again it's dark fingers sliding through his armor and into him. The creature pulls back and Olik looks weaker once again.
-5 Str for a total of -9 = -4 to Str based checks
Tam gets in position to try and help Olik as well while Batah calls on his divine powers, releasing a blast of positive energy.
Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
The light washes over the shadowy creature tearing away at it.
So for Olik you have a +4 to attack from Tam & Jirani aiding, but a -4 for the Str damage
Round 2
>Olik, Jirani, Virgil, Monster, Tam, Batah
Olik Vogenson |
Olik can feel a cold foulness infusing him as the shadow tears away at his being. Focusing as best he can he reaches out to try and give the undead a taste of its own medicine.
Touch Attack: 1d20 + 3 - 4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 3 - 4 + 4 = 5
Positive Energy: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Fighting mostly on force of will alone however he's unable to make contact and staggers back.
Continuing to hold the charge and 5' step back
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
Jirani grimaces when Olik is hit again. He barely restrains himself from attacking the creature directly. That wouldn't do any good! Be patient...
Seeing Olik withdraw, and considering the damage that Batah caused to it, Jirani decides this time to try to distract the shadowy creature's retributive attack against Batah. He then starts to round the creature, to further distract it in case one of his allies can get into a flanking position.
Aid another to give Batah +2 AC: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
I've been having such a great run getting crits against things that aren't subject to crits! Freaking love this dice roller!
Batah ibn Abbala |
Batah calls upon the positive energy of his goddess and lays his hand upon the foul creature.
Cast CLW on undead beastie
"Begone spirit! Let the rays of Sarenrae cleanse the land of your existence!"
Touch Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 1 = 9
GM Dak |
Olik attempts to touch the creature with the positive energy coursing over his hand, but has a hard time even getting his arm up to attempt to touch it. After the failed attempt he moves away once again. Jirani moves into position continuing to attempt to distract it while setting up a better fighting position. Virgil moves up and attempts to smack it with his morningstar, but it simply passes right through the shadowy creature.
After the damage Batah had done to it the creature turns its attention toward him attempting to pull a piece of him away.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
By Sarenrae's divine blessing the creature doesn't seem to be able to ripe away at Batah like it did Olik. Batah hits the thing back with the same positive energy Olik is holding and manages to connect as the shadowy creatures form gets torn away even more.
Just need Tam then top of Init for next round.
Olik Vogenson |
Weak in body but unwilling to leave his friends unaided, Olik steps back and once again tries to touch the undead.
Touch attack w/ aid and flank: 1d20 + 3 - 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 - 4 + 2 + 2 = 16
Positive energy damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
As his hand passes into the shadow the light surrounding is bursts forth and burns away at the wisps of darkness.
Virgil Firecask |
"Filthy creature!!" Tam calls out when Olik is once again attacked.
"I am not! I bathed last month!" Virgil swings again, hoping to connect.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Do they sell new virtual dice in the digital store?
GM Dak |
Olik manages to get in a better position with the creature distracted and having turned it's attention toward Batah Olik grabs the creature, releaseing the positive energy into it. With his touch the thing disappates into nothingness only leaving behind a small gem like before.
Out of combat
Olik Vogenson |
As the shadow dissipates Olik sits down hard on the ground, his breath labored.
"Well, that wasn't much fun now was it?" he says shivering from a bone deep cold. Looking to Virgil and Batah he says, "We fought the creature, or one just like it, the first time we came through here. Any chance the Dawnflower might keep them from reappearing again? I don't fancy getting the rest of the life sucked out of me."
After a moment he takes a deep breath and slowly rises back to his feet.
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
"We've found other gemstones around these halls, as well. The wizard who had been researching the door before he was killed, thought that colors had something to do with the 7-pointed star carved into it. My early idea is that these colorful gems may be useful in opening it somehow."
He watches Olik with concern. "How do you fare? Did his attacks have the same effect as they did on Malik? We may need to cut this day short. We didn't rely on Malik's strength as we do on yours. In town, we'll get a grappling hook, so that we can climb to the upper level and bypass all this. We can't keep wasting energy here if this thing's just going to keep coming back."
Batah ibn Abbala |
Batah studies the chamber, casting Light ot illuminate the area as much as possible.
"I am afraid I have just started unravelling the mysteries of the Dawnflower and she has not yet seen fit to pass such knowledge onto me. I will pray and hope she can direct me how to deal with such creatures. Did the creature leave anyone physically wounded? I can heal you if you need it, but the strength-sapping I can do nothing for, I am afraid."
Olik Vogenson |
"My sword arm won't be of too much use until this thrice-cursed things taint is off of me. I've still got a few tricks though so I think we can continue a bit."
Olik joins Batah looking about the room for anything that might be a source of the shadows.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
Jirani eyes Olik skeptically. "If you're sure..." With another reassurance, Jirani leads the way through the rest of the familiar path toward the cavern where the stirges ended their progress a few days before.
Tamarie Yangrit |
Tamarie twitches slightly at the mention of the strength sapping moquitoes, but quikly nocks an arrow, with the precision and speed of someone who has done this many many times before.
"Ready!"
GM Dak |
Days: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Acrobatics-J: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (4) - 2 = 2
1d100 ⇒ 85
You take your time getting back to the room with the pilars, slowly moving through the collapsing hall. Jirani almost causes a collapse as he moves through but makes it out without anything actually falling on top of him.
What's the plan this time around :)
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
"I can lead the way this time. Maybe I can get a strike in with the polearm before they close on me. Keep me covered, though."
Jirani takes a deep breath, and then carefully makes his way onto the first pillar. He looks up toward the ceiling apprehensively, and then moves to the next one.
He continues to the other side unless the stirges come out.
Batah ibn Abbala |
Batah watches the Garundi fighter leap from pillar to pillar with some trepidation.
"I am not sure I will be able to make such acrobatic jumps, my friends. Is there perhaps a way to climb down then up on the other side?"
He looks over the edge, shining his light-ensorceled blade into the gloom.
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
Ah. I thought it was only an acrobatics check to move two in one round.
Jirani moves to the first pillar. He looks hard at the next one, as if a dirty look will make it move closer. He looks down at the water, and decides to try something else. He steps back to the ledge.
There still a ladder on the other side, and lit torches?
Jirani takes off his pack and pulls out some rope. He hands it off to one of his allies. "A couple of you hold this steady. I'll climb down and see how deep that water is." He unstraps his buckler and leaves his ranseur and buckler on the ledge. When his mates have the rope braced, he then crawls over the edge with both hands on the rope, and makes his way down.
Climb T10 = 9, if available, or Climb modifier is -1 after ACP if T10 is not available.
Or we could probably drop a pebble with light cast on it, and see if the water's shallow enough for the light to shine through.
Olik Vogenson |
Not in much shape to aid in holding the rope Olik instead positions himself near the edge where he can see Jirani once again descending into a deep, watery hold in the ground.
"At least you're using a rope this time." he quips as the warrior climbs down.
Quietly he begins an old Ulfen folk song, generally sung by mothers to their children, about a young bird learning to fly. The rhythm bounces and floats along.
If anyone falls from 10' or higher during the crossing Olik will cast featherfall on them.
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
I could swear I posted something...
"It's a little cold. No more than chest high, though." He starts wading around the edge to the other side. He takes the ladder and brings it back around the edge to help any of the others climb down.
Olik Vogenson |
Olik chuckles at the dwarfs statement and then follows him down. Even the short climb down the ladder is difficult for the bard. The muscles of his arms and legs drained as if he had spent the morning on a forced march and the afternoon in battle. Doing his best to muddle along he eventually lowers himself into the waters. He keeps Sea Reaver and his bow held high to keep them dry during the crossing.
Jirani Kafr Abdu |
When everyone descends, Jirani carries the ladder to the other side to assist the climb up. He leads the way, and stands guard at the top. Once another has joined him, he puts his buckler on again.
