After some succesful missions with the Pathfinders you have been sent into the River Kingdoms to the town of Thornkeep. Thornkeep lies about 10 miles from the broad, sluggish West Sellen River and the ruins of the once-prosperous town of Mosswater. The settlement is a disorderly, ramshackle affair that huddles on a low hill beneath the bramble-covered walls of its namesake castle. The presence of the castle provides the people of Thornkeep with just enough protection to deter the pirates and brigands of the nearby River Kingdoms, while offering Thornkeep’s own bandits and thieves a safe base from which they can prey on traffic along the West Sellen or the Crusader Road.

The current lord of Thornkeep is Baron Tervin Blackshield, who seized his lofty position by murdering his predecessor 2 years ago. Such has been the way of things in the forest town for 80 years or more: whoever is strong enough to depose the lord of the castle and make it his own claims the title of baron, and rules until the next would-be lord wrenches power from his grasp.

The Society recieved news that the Wizards of the Goldenfire Order have recovered some historical tapastry that may provide new clues to unlocking the Door of Seven Stars in the Accursed Halls which hasn’t been opened in thousands of years.

Long ago, the evil Nhur Athemon—a powerful wizard and devotee of the demon lord Abraxas—fled Azlant with his household and slaves, making the distant Echo Wood his home in exile. He raised a tower atop the very hill where Thornkeep now stands. Ever fearful of discovery by his enemies in Azlant, the wizard-lord raised webs of illusion and magical wards to conceal his presence. Ultimately, however, Athemon’s efforts were to no avail—in time, his enemies succeeded in divining his location. Azlanti wizards and soldiers broke into the hidden stronghold and destroyed Athemon and his followers, leaving little trace of the outcast’s stronghold aboveground. However, the soldiers missed the workrooms and conjuring chambers under his palace.

Over thousands of years, Nhur Athemon’s wards slowly failed, but enough magic remained to make the hidden vaults a place of darkness and horror. The humans of the nearby lands avoided Brokenhelm Hill, but the goblins of Zog delved eagerly, seeking the power they sensed sleeping here. Goblin miners cut tunnels to reach parts of the complex buried during the long-ago destruction of Nhur Athemon’s palace, and goblin adepts eagerly experimented with the magical properties of the halls, often causing their own demise.

With this new information of the Door of Seven Stars you have been dispatched by the Society to be the first to try and figure out a way to enter and explore the lower chambers of the ruins. While a number of chambers in the Accursed Halls have been explored no one knows what lies in wait behind the Door of Seven Stars. You have made the long journey into the River Kingdoms only now arricing at the gates of Thornkeep.

Before you headed off you would have had time to make purchases. So if you needed to get anything big while still in Absalom feel free to make those purchases.

Picked up some scrolls and stuff.

Malik Jiri has spent much of his time since his last mission in the alehouses and dens of pleasure in Absalom. When you first meet up with him again, he looks a little worse for wear, but as you travel it seems to have a rejuvenating effect on him the farther from Absalom you get. He seems little changed from your past experiences together, perhaps a little slipperier morally, a little more of a smooth-talker.

Jirani greets the familiar faces with a warm smile, and introduces himself to the unfamiliar face(s).

"It's good to meet you! I am Jirani Kafr Abdu, man-at-arms for the Society and merchant by trade."

Noticing Tamarie's quiet demeanor, Jirani attempts to ease the concern that his archer friend must have: "Tamarie, you don't need to worry about your aunt. She's smart enough to be cautious on any mission she is given in the meantime."

On the road, "I am looking forward to exploring the Accursed Halls. It has been a while since I've done any underground exploration. It'll need a new name, though, I think. Probably Thornkeep, itself, as well. None of it sounds particularly welcoming. Perhaps we can come up with new monikers for these landmarks before we arrive."

"It's not my aunt I worry about. If anything there will be less worrying with her around. It's more that I haven't heard from Olik for a couple of days now, and he isn't one to be late. Something could have happened on the way here. It is the Stolen Lands, right. Maybe he decided to take a detour through Daggermark? Or lost his way in Pitax?"

After the party has had some time to greet each other a large Ulfen man approaches. His long hair and beard are well groomed and contain multiple braids but still an untamed aura seems to surround him. When he nears the group he looks about and, with a grand smile, calls out a greeting.

"Ah Tamarie, it is good to see you little sister! And you Jirani, I'm glad to hear the merchants guild hasn't stolen you away from us!" Taking in Maliks appearance he laughs, "Ah Malik, I see some wax is still left on the candle despite your attempts to burn both ends. Looking about again he continues, "I had heard rumor that Tess had set out on another mission. I'm sure we'll miss her level headed wisdom but I suppose it can't be helped."

To Tamarie he added in fluent elvish :

Elvish:

Olik:
One of the oldest buildings in town, the Greenforest is a respectable inn and taphouse with fieldstone walls and finely carved woodwork adorning its posts and eaves.

Thirsty Ogre is a disreputable tavern much rougher than the Greenforest Inn, and so outlaws, goblins, barbarians, and the less savory sort of mercenaries make up most of the clientele. The evenings are filled with bawdy songs, boastful challenges, and drunken brawling, and it’s not unusual for blades or spells to settle matters that get out of hand. Anyone who sets foot in the Thirsty Ogre is assumed to know what they’re getting into, and those who aren’t looking for a fight would do well to stay away from the notorious establishment.

You get the impression the Greenforest Inn is a safer bet

Jirani:
Nothing really comes to mind.

"Baron Tervin is a brooding, sullen brute of a man 40 years of age. Tervin retains a good number of servants and men-at-arms. His wife is Lady Ivis, a stern woman descended from minor nobility in Ustalav so I'm told. Together they are raising their two young children while the Baron rules, to some degree. Although the other factions maintain most of the day-to-day law and order, what little there is. Ariane Redderfin, a bold Chelish swordswoman, is the captain of the Blue Basilisks, a band of swords-for-hire. Eldrast Anvilmor is the keeper of the Shrine of Battle, the larger of the two temples here in Thornkeep. The Goldenfire Order is a small guild of wizards-for-hire based in Thornkeep. Founded by the elven wizard Iliara Starcloak 6 years ago. The leader of the Brambleclaw goblin tribe is the Great Chief Graalsk, a pompous blowhard with delusions of grandeur. Graalsk refers to himself in the third person and seems mad as a hatter. Huntmaster Jaervon Mardesal, a half-elf archer who wears his hair in a long ponytail, currently leads the Hunters’ Guild, the foremost trackers, guides, trappers, and hunters of the Echo Wood. Oreena Hollysong lives in a small cottage in the Echo Wood, not far from Thornkeep. A number of the ordinary folk of the town revere the Green Faith as she does and hold Oreena in high regard, seeking her counsel about how best to keep their small patch of civilization in line with the teachings of nature. Guildmaster Yunar Barask, a wiry gray-haired man with a large, bristly mustache, is a respectable merchant who owns the Thornkeep Mercantile. The warrior Darioth is an honored chieftain of the Wolfmane tribe, and is recognized as the leader of the encampment near Thornkeep. The Wolfmanes, a Kellid tribe, claimed the Echo Wood as their hunting ground centuries ago."

He taps his finger on his chin and chuckles "I suppose that is quite a lot, but that about covers everyone of any real importance"

Is the Shrine of Battle dedicated to Gorum or another deity?" Once he answers, "Thank you for your insight. perhaps it would be best if we retired to our room to consider your words."

"While it may take a bit of time I think it would be best if we at least acquaint ourselves with the leaders of the community. Word of outsiders will move quickly and so they will no doubt soon hear of us and our actions. Better we talk to them first if for nothing more than as a sign of respect. At the very least we need talk to Iliara Starcloak about the tapestry her order found. Being on friendly terms with Guildmaster Barask will be helpful both for gaining access to supplies and in selling what we might find in the under-tower. Speaking to the Huntmaster could provide some important information about he lay of the land. We'll need to locate the entrance but if goblins were digging tunnels then the hunters may well know of alternate entrances to the catacombs. The Baron, Great Chief and this Darioth all most likely claim the area we'll be operating in so we should see about securing their blessing to avoid making enemies of them. I would pay respects to the Lord in Iron regardless, but the temples services may well be needed at some point and gaining some good will from Orena Hollysong, and therefore the common folk, could open doors to us. I don't know exactly how the Blue Basilisks can be of service but I think it would be a mistake to slight their leader by leaving her out."

After considering a moment the bard continues, "Perhaps we could send a runner to the Baron requesting an audience. While we await his response we can visit the Goldenfire Order and then the temple of Gorum. Next we can see about speaking with the Guildmaster, Huntmaster and Basilisks before travelling to the woods to meet with the leader of the Green Faith and Kellids. That will just leave the goblin and Baron. In this way we'll have contacted the Baron first, which I think he would expect, while giving us the chance to talk to learn a bit more about him before actually talking with him."

One thing I wasn't clear on from the opening description, do we have the information from the tapestry (or the tapestry itself) or do we just know that the Goldenfire Order has information but not what the information actually is?
