Checking in. Thanks for the selection, Dak!

First point to make: though the avatar looks female, Zizouket is a male gnome. Just, you know, gnomes always look kinda androgynous, is all.

Zizouket grew up in Sandpoint. He's 43, but in gnome years, he's a young adult. He picks up and delivers laundry at several places around town, and he spends 3 or 4 evenings each week playing card games at one (or more) of the local taverns. Other evenings, he'll train with a local gnome NPC. He still sometimes sits up at Junker's Edge, watching the goblins pick trash below.

For about 4 years, up to about a year ago, you might have seen him digging through the trash heap himself, during the day, or trying to sell what he recovered around town.

I think Manzcar's half-orc has the same 'goblin watcher' trait. It would be funny, though, if we never ran into each other. He'd watch them during the day, and Zizouket would watch them at night.

Seriously, though, I could see the two knowing each other. Hanging out up on the Edge, playing cards (for coppers or peanuts) or games of "what are the goblins going to pick first/next?"

Thanks for letting me in one of these games I am very excited to be a part of the group, and what a cool group.

Blake's Appearance & Background:
Blake is 20 years old, and dresses to cover the burns on his back and hands. Typically he wears shirts with long sleeves and high collars, long pants, and gloves. He is about 6ft tall, and has a strong frame from working at the brewery and the martial discipline he has practiced for the past five years. His red hair is kept neat and clean shaven.

Blake Deverin is the late born son of Wade Deverin cleric of Abadar and the former brew master at the Two Knight Brewery. When Blake was 4, he was trapped in a fire with his mother Merril (originaly Merril Hosk, younger sister of Daviren Hosk owner of the Goblins Squash Stables) which burned him and killed her. Merril had three children from a prior marriage: Sherril who was already married to a farmer living on the outskirts of the Hinterlands, Ameil who wed a traveling merchant and relocated to Magnimar, and Adler who was only 9 at the time of the fire but was not in the house at the time it occurred and was left unharmed.

To keep up with business at the brewery Wade sent the boys to attend classes at Turandarok Academy during the day, where Master Gandethus saw Blake's potential and after the first year, with Wade's permission, started teaching the boy the Discipline of Magic. Blake enjoyed the study of the arcane arts but had a difficult time with the bullies in the school, one being his older sibling Adler the other a rejected half-elf born of a political scandal Tsuto. The two of them were sometimes cohorts and sometimes rivals and always gave Blake a hard time, Adler often blamed Blake for the death of their mother. Adler left home as soon as he was 18 years old, presumably to seek his fortune in Riddleport. Blake has not seen or heard from him since then.

Two years later Wade was one of the first victims of the serial killer known as Chopper. Blake was only fifteen and distraught with wanting revenge after losing his second parent. Blake's uncle Gaven, a paladin of Abadar, helped the boy endure the emotional ordeal by training him in the Code of Abadar and teaching him the skills of sword play. Gaven hoped this would prevent Blake from getting himself killed while hunting the murderer. Now that the "Late Unpleasantness" has passed, Blake helps his uncle at the brewery and enjoys evenings at the Rusty Dragon listening to the adventure tales of Ameiko and the colorful travelers that frequent the inn. He often dreams of traveling the open road, but knows his duty is to Gaven, the brewery, and the memory of his parents here in Sandpoint.

Runk, Ethan, Fofin:
I doubt Blake would know you three since you all seem to be just arriving in Sandpoint. Depending on how long ago you arrived we may have seen each other at the Rusty Dragon.

Gorhan & Zizouket:

Gorhan--By your background we would defiantly know each other, and have for the past 16 years. The orphanage in town is also the school I attended since I was four (now 20) The Turandarok Academy is run by a mage, who also might have been helping you learn magic along side me. The bullies who picked on you were also picking on me, one of which is my older half-brother, who would have been around to give us grief until you were 14 and he was old enough to split town. Both outsiders, you for your race and me for my deformity on the neck, back, and arms. I think we might be come close friends...almost brothers, we understand each other. You would have been about 16 when the serial killer "Chopper" killed my father.

Zizouket--I doubt we know each other very well socially, since I have chosen to hang out at the Rusty Dragon and you probably hang out at The Hagfish (the tavern with the gambling tables.) Since my uncle runs the Two Knight Brewery and I work there, we could know each other professionally. Perhaps your mother cleans the aprons we use at the brewery, and as single males probably our laundry too. We could know each other from your delivery's and pick ups. Of course if you and Gorhan are good friends from hangin out at the Junker's Edge then it would stand that we were friends and all three of us could get along.

I also see that the the character with the Fire Elemental bloodline is in the same group as the guy who is afraid of fire....well played GM DAK well played.

Ethan and Fofin have adventure hooks that could mesh. Ethan could be a Good Samaritan that found the beaten and bedraggled dwarf, offered healing, a dry shirt, and travelling company to the "Big City" of Sandpoint.

I enjoy this idea. Also, his backstory specifically mentions his friendly and sociable demeanor toward nearly all sorts of travelers that have been through Janderhoff at some point. It could be possible that characters could have made a connection there as well.

Feel free to take a look at Runks history in his profile. I originally created him as a potential character for a "dirty dozen" type run involving an infiltration of Nirmathas from Molthune. Didn't end up being involved there but thought it might be neat to continue the concept.

As an overview he grew up as a slave and was eventually released. Took to the road as a guide/bandit/hunter and eventually sought (and failed) to join the Molthune military in the hopes of gaining citizenship. After that he headed North and West until he comes to Sandpoint.

He would be looking for work in the area and would certainly be interested in finding a crew to work with (safety and better scores in numbers and all). My thought would be that he would be a late comer to the show perhaps approaching the group once it had started to form up. He might also be drawn to Zizouket as Runk was significantly influenced by the fey in the woods of his homeland. I'm happy to roll with whatever works for the group though.

As a side note I'm going to be trying to branch out a bit with this character. Generally speaking I tend to be wordy (I submit this post as evidence to that fact :) and run NG/CG characters. My intent is to try and play Runk as a person of few words and motivated by self interest. If I get annoying with it just let me know and I'll modify things. Also if I seem to be drifting into the land of the good too much let me know as well :).

Anyway looking forward to a fun run!

Cool, and I think Blake understands the special relationship Boo and Gorhan have so tell him there is no need to worry.

I was thinking it might be cool Boo is the reason Adler left town. After a little bit of training with Ilsoari Gandethus (the school headmaster/man in charge of the orphanage who is a mage) you learned a little bit of how to summon Boo. When Adler and few of the older boys in town, he'd be 18 about then, found you at the Junker's Edge "watching goblins" and started pushing you around. Push came to shove and Boo shoved back. Adler, embarrassed that you got the better of him left town and hasn't been back yet. Maybe Zizouket was there too, but Blake was off doing something else that day, and he also joined in the standing up to the bullies and that is why you two became friends also. That would make all three of us friends at the start of the game for the past seven years.

So what's the party look like tactically?

Fofin and Boo up front?
Ethan doing ranged?
Zizouket blasting, maybe a little battlefield control.

I've thought a little about switching Zizouket to an Arcane Sage bloodline, if it's alright with Dak, and taking a couple levels of ranger. That way I'd have more skill points, hit points, some armor, and I'd be able to sneak. And it would fit since the gnome NPC he's trained with could be a ranger.

Tactically Runk would be playing a scouting (sneak/perc/disable) role and in combat looking to watch our flanks and hit theirs.

Didn't have the point to train it at first level but at 2nd level he'll be adding Survival skills into the mix as well.

Blake is another front liner, he has spells to help him in close combat and can enchant his weapon. His AC is good, though the dwarf has more hp.

If you take away the fire elemental bloodline, we don't have to worry about my fear of fire. If you keep the fire aspects we should figure out how that affects are friendship assuming we work out a joint story that you and Gorhan also like.

While we are waiting to get started...Which of you are familiar with the AP, how long have you been gaming, what's your gaming style?

I'll start.....

I am running a RotRL PBP and know the first book pretty well, but have yet to move my group on to the second one.

I have been gaming for about 30 years DND and lots of other games too, most recently getting into the FATE system. I played D&D first, then AD&D 2nd -->3rd/3.5 and the followed onto Pathfinder. I tried 4th with some friends, and I am not a big fan. Not that it is bad, it's just not my style.

I love the story telling part and the Roleplay of the game. Since I love the story more than that stats, loot, and success of rolls I won't be letting my OOC knowledge dictate how my charter acts in game. It also why I made a character with a history that connects him tightly to the town of Sandpoint.

Male Dwarf Fighter 1 | AC 18 T 10 FF 18 | HP 12/12 | F +4 R +0 W +0 | Init +0 | Perc +1

Heard about bits and pieces from the AP and I own it but I personally haven't looked into it just because I would like a surprise.

I've been gaming for a little under 10 years now, just started with Pathfinder at the beginning of this one, actually. Like many other D&D was the start with 3.0, then 3.5 and I tried my best to dabble with 4e but like you said, Blake, not my cup of tea. Less room for story, I personally believe.

Once again, I'll have to agree on your way of thinking, Mr. Magus, as I am an avid RP lover and enjoy the story and in-character interactions over the other points of the game. I admit though it wouldn't be nearly as sweet without the combat and other aspects but the immersion comes first! In the past I've often tailored my combat to what my character would do, typically mixing it up which frustrates some people as it's often not the damage I'm focused on.

Anyway, this looks like a great group and I'm looking forward to this adventure with you all!

Male Halfling Rogue (Scout) 3 | AC 20 T 17 FF 15 | HP 25/25 | F +4 R +8 W +2 (+2 vs fear)| Init +6, Perc +8

I'm coming into this AP without any knowledge of it beyond having heard of its classic status.

I've been gaming for maybe 20-25 years on and off. Started with AD&D but most of my time was with 3/3.5. After a long hiatus I started up again recently with Pathfinder and have been loving it.

As for gaming style, I'd have to say I'm pretty balanced. I love the story and immersion standpoint but I also appreciate the rules mechanics and tactical elements. What makes a good game for me is when characters are played as real people in a real world. I like characters to have their own motivations and plans, NPCs to be more then just the five answers they have to give and actions to have consequences (good or bad).

As Fofin said it seems like we have a good crew forming up and I'm looking forward to seeing where it all leads. :)

What I know of the AP:

BBEGs are based on the Seven Deadly Sins.

Goblins attack first thing.

Somewhere in the story there are incestuous hillbilly ogres.

I was introduced to D&D on an afternoon school bus ride home when I was in 2nd grade (1981). I overheard two older kids talking about the game and looking at the rule books from the Reddish-Orange Basic D&D Box Set (Erol Otus cover).

I also began playing Star Frontiers, Car Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Battletech, and TOON somewhere in this time period.

Moved on to the Expert Set, then went to AD&D. I bought and played all the old school classics, and subscribed to Dragon and Dungeon magazines.
I transitioned to 2nd Edition, including the Complete (class/race) handbooks, as well as the Combat and Tactics, Skills and Powers, and Spells and Magic books.

While in college, I got into Magic: the Gathering, all of the White Wolf games (Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, and Hunters Hunted), as well as a sci-fi furry game called Justifiers.

Sometime, in my young adulthood, 3rd edition came out, and I got onboard. 3.5 offered sensible changes to the rules, so I begrudgingly bought new rule books.

When 4th edition was announced, I was not interested. Paizo had, at that point, earned my loyalty through Dragon and Dungeon Magazines. I spent 5 years DMing my group through the Age of Worms AP, and by the time Pathfinder was published, it was a no-brainer for me.

I've been playing Pathfinder ever since with no regrets.

My playing style is a balance between roleplaying and tactical mindset.

I try not to use meta-game (player) knowledge to solve problems. I have actually found that pbps are a great way to hone roleplaying skills, as I find myself thinking very carefully about how my character would react to a situation before I post it.

If you want a sampling of my playing style, feel free to read some of the other pbp threads in which I am currently active (see the aliases under my primary alias - Cuchulainn).

Anyway, looking forward to this adventure!

Played D&D as a kid. Dabbled with Rolemaster which I loved charts don't scare me. and then a very long hiatus then this year found PbP so been really great getting into it.

Play style love the role play and the interactions between players but who doesn't like gutting the bad guys.

Male Gnome Sor2/Rgr1 | AC 16 T 13 FF 14 | HP 22/22 | F +4 R +4 W +3 | Init +2, Perc +7 | Arcane spell failure 15%

I was always interested in RPGs, but never really had a group to play with consistently. Did play tabletop for a few years right after 3.5 came out, I believe. I quit around the time 4.0 came out (coincidence, not the cause).

Started looking into it again in late 2010. I came to Paizo first because all my DND books are boxed up somewhere. PbP is pretty much the best medium for me, anyway, though.

I started to run RotRL on these boards back then, but we didn't get far before I realized I couldn't keep up the pace and quality I wanted, and suggested they find another GM. I don't think I looked any further than the first book, and I don't remember most of it, anyway.

Style-wise, very tactical. I envy the posts of players solving a problem more creatively than just rolling the same attack over and over. I'd say I probably focus more on the events of the story than the character. Character-wise, I just try to come up with a few personal values or motivations, and then try to stay consistent with it. I figure the events of the story should be able to affect or guide my character.

I've taken pretty well to pbp. Maybe it's because I roll crappy or because I'm used to going 2+ months real-time between combats, I think I'm pretty patient about non-combat challenges, or letting other characters fulfill their role.

I think I'm going to keep the fire elemental bloodline, though I still think I'll take level 2 & 3 as a ranger.

If Zizouket & Blake are friends, I'd think they'd have to consider it something they agree to disagree on. Zizou doesn't throw spells around for no reason, but, knowing Blake's history, he probably would have mentioned that he had extra talent with fire spells. He'd be respectful of Blake's experience, but his pov is that that was an uncontrolled fire, and Zizou's spells are controlled. So Zizou wouldn't feel like he needed to change, and Blake probably couldn't change. So it'd be like two friends who had one heated discussion about their political differences and both reached the unspoken agreement that if they're going to continue to be friends, it's not a topic they discuss again.

Magus 3 | AC 17 T 13 FF 14 | HP 25 / 24 | F +4 R +3 W +3 | Init +4 | Perc +0

@ Zizouket, I doubt Blake would ever try to make anyone else change away from fire spells. He is trained in magic and gets controlled vs uncontrolled. I doubt they would even have a discussion like that, I was thinking more along the lines of how you act with your magic around him and how he reacts to it. The first time Blake sees him use fire, Blake is going to back away and be weary of it, think of it like a phobia of fire. At that point does Zizokuket use that knowledge to hold it over Blake, or respect Blake's experience and make an effort not to use the magic with out a warning first. Would they have even used magic together at the same time? We could leave this an unanswered question and let it resolve in the game too. So I guess that is a better question. Does Blake know your fire tendencies yet, if so I assume Zizouket is kind and doesn't use it to torment or belittle Blake, If not we can see what happens in play.

Hi Dak,

I've got some questions about transferring credit to a PFS character when they reach that level. Figured these are relevant to this game, too, since you said there are portions of the AP that can give credit to a PFS character.

1) What transfers over? The money, the PP, the fame, the XP, the items available for purchase at the end of the scenario? If I play a 4th level pregen in a scenario, and then wanted to apply the credit to Jirani when he hits 4th level, would he start to pull ahead of the rest of the party, if we continued to play through scenarios together?

2) In character, would it be interpreted that Jirani went off and did the mission in the scenario himself, even though I really played through it with a female elf rogue from the Grand Lodge faction?

3) If I didn't want to apply the credit to Jirani, do I have to create a new lvl 1 PFS character now, or can I just put a '-2' on the end of my PFS number so I can apply the credit to a character to be determined in the future?

Thanks!

While I'm no expert by any means (only been playing PFS games for about a year) I'll try and answer all of your questions.

Everything carries over basically you apply the Chronicle sheet to your real character as if he had gone on the mission. In the particular instance of Jirani if you did apply a sheet in between other sessions it would pull you ahead of them slightly but not much since it requires 3 sheets to get 1 level, so you would level up one session before the others but since you can play multi-level characters in a scenario as applicable it wouldn't really effecting anything.

2) In character, would it be interpreted that Jirani went off and did the mission in the scenario himself, even though I really played through it with a female elf rogue from the Grand Lodge faction?

In character, yeah I would expect you simply were sent on another mission that the others hadn't been sent on.

3) If I didn't want to apply the credit to Jirani, do I have to create a new lvl 1 PFS character now, or can I just put a '-2' on the end of my PFS number so I can apply the credit to a character to be determined in the future?

This one I'm not completely sure how it works, but what you suggest would be the method I would go through if I was playing a pregen and didn't want to apply it to an existing character of mine.

I think I'm on as Jamie N. or Jamie Noone.

I wanted to suggest a simple mechanic for Zizouket's gambling opportunities.

The check for a profession seems to assume that you always win. How much is dependent on your roll. But let's say 4 people play against each other exclusively all week long. At the end of the week, they all roll their check and they all make money. Who lost it?

Quote:
You can earn half your Profession check result in gold pieces per week of dedicated work. You know how to use the tools of your trade, how to perform the profession's daily tasks, how to supervise helpers, and how to handle common problems. You can also answer questions about your Profession. Basic questions are DC 10, while more complex questions are DC 15 or higher.

Suggested mechanic for sit-and-go play:

Start with a buy-in and number of players, set by the GM. This would probably be based on the size of the community. A small community may play for coppers or silvers, and a prosperous community may play for gold.
Then all players roll their check, and all the results are added together.
Then each player walks away with whatever percentage of the full purse that their roll contributed to the total.

So, for example, say the GM says there's four at a table and the buy-in is 25 silver, so the purse is 100 silver.
Player 1's roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19
Player 2's roll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Player 3's roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Player 4's roll: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Total of all rolls is 61.

Player 1 had 19/61 = 31% of the total, so he walks away with 31 silver.
Player 2 had 24/61 = 39% of the total, so he walks away with 39 silver.
Player 3 had 10/61 = 16% of the total, so he walks away with 16 silver.
Player 4 had 8/61 = 13% of the total, so he walks away with 13 silver.
I rounded down on each so it ends up adding to 99 silver. You can say the last silver went to tips players gave out during the game to the tavern's servers.

If a player wanted to put in a condition before the game, like 'I cut my losses if I lose half the buy-in', then if the player has one of the losing rolls (player 3 or 4), then his losses are limited to his condition, and the other three are recalculated with what's left in the purse. Say player 3 and 4 both put in that condition. So player 4 now walks away with 12 sp instead of 8, and the new total roll is 24 + 19 + 10 = 53. Now player 3 had 10/53 = 19% of 88 sp, so he walks away with 16 sp, so his condition didn't trigger. Player 2 now has 24/53 = 45% of 88 sp, so he takes 40 sp; and player 1 now has 19/53 = 36% of 88 sp, so he takes 31 sp. Similar process if one of the winners had said they quit while they're ahead by 5 silver.

Tournament rules:
For variation, if they were playing a winner-take-all tournament (not likely in an AP, I'd imagine), the high roll would take it all. Or you could have a series of rolls, where the low roll is eliminated first, and the survivors may get a bonus of +2, or +1 on the next roll based on their ranking to symbolize their chip leads. Then the lowest is eliminated again, and the high roll may get a bonus of +2 or +1 for the last roll dependent on his lead.

So if the above rolls were round 1, player 4 would be eliminated. Players 1 & 2 are close, but they both rolled much higher than player 3, so they have a significant chip lead over him. GM's discretion, but I'd give them both a +1 going into the next round.
Round 2:
Player 1's roll: 1d20 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 12 + 1 = 33
Player 2's roll: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 8 + 1 = 25
Player 3's roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Now player 3 is eliminated, and it's down to player 1 and player 2. Player 1 didn't roll too much higher than player 2, though, so his chip lead shouldn't be considered insurmountable. No bonus.

Player 1's roll: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Player 2's roll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
And player 1 fends off player 2 to take all 100 silver.

Thanks all.

Also a note to all, I've been subpoenaed for jury duty. We are still going through jury selection but I haven't been dismissed yet. Usually I can post several times a day but this is going to limit it to once or twice a day, maybe a couple extra if I can sneak it in on breaks.
