Shadow Lodge

The party troupes off just after 9 am and comes in sight of the Border wood just past noon.

The nearer the forest gets, the colder the air becomes. First, you're able to see little puffs of vapor whenever you exhale. Then, your hands and feet start to numb. Finally, around 3pm, you enter the Border Wood itself and the cold is so sever that your lungs start to hurt every time you take a breath.

Deep snow lines the road on either side and, just ahead, debris and the corpses of slain man and horses litter the path. A carriage stands in the center of the lane, it's team of horses missing or cut free, while another carriage lies sprawled and broken next to the tree line. To the south, more bodies have fallen around what appears to be a statue of ice. A row of depressed snow leads off the path and into the woods nearby. The footprints are single file, making it very difficult to discern the number of aggressors.

I need fortitude saves against the cold. Perception checks above a 16 may or may not notice anything that wasn't completely obvious. Perception checks using vision and ranged attack rolls suffer a -4 penalty due to poor visibility.

"He just said there were many of those creatures and that we should keep our eyes open."
Narsius quickly follows Ellowin in the Border wood.

He stays silent while the group travel and does his best to keep his eyes open for anything.

Fort against cold: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Perception check, because the dm said so. Don't know what I'm making it on but okay. perception: 5 + 1d20 ⇒ 5 + (19) = 24

Jack will go over to the wrecked carriage and look inside and around the area for anything of value or any enemies he might see. added in my -4 from vision at the end.perception: 5 + 1d20 - 4 ⇒ 5 + (8) - 4 = 9

Hope I can bare this cold fort: 8 + 1d20 ⇒ 8 + (13) = 21

Also Jack bought snow shoes before the game started, so he has a reduced movement penalty from snow. Oh right, fixed my 2nd perception check because it was clearly vision -4.

If I prompt a perception check, it is optional. You also don't have to make two in one round.

Jack and Narsius don't see anyone about, but the do hear muffled movement from the carriages: like someone tied up and gagged?

When Jack throws open the carriage door, oppressive cold spills out followed by two shambling, frostbitten men with black hands and faces.

Both throw themselves at the unsuspecting Vanara, desperately trying to bite him...

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

...but the ranger is too fast on his feat, managing to avoid the attacks.

Um dm, did two men crawl out of an overturned carriage? Um, wouldn't they be prone if inside, how are they standing up? check the map. I'm investigating one carriage at a time, I'm not in a rush.

I checked the map. Two creatures climbed out of the fallen carriage and attacked. Please don't slow down the game with posts like this. I am not a new GM. I am open to questions, but please do so in discussion and I may or may not answer them.

Fortitude: 1d20 + 2 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 5 = 17 (+5 due to cold-weather outfit)
Perception: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (1) - 4 = -3

Kara shivers as a particularly strong gust of wind pushes snow into her face, temporarily blinding her. By the time the gust ends and she brushes away the snow, Jack is attacking two severely frost-bitten men with his greataxe.

Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 Attempting to identify the men (if they are from Heldren).

Will wait to post actions until we're in initiative.
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Once Daevin notices the creatures attacking Jack, he moves in closer, mutters something to himself, then focuses on the creature directly in front of the Vanara.

Ah, I see! That should speed things up considerably.

Unable to identify the men, and seeing as how they attacked Jack, Kara pulls her hidden dagger from her pocketed scarf. At the same time, she reaches out to Ellowin, placing her hand on the ranger's shoulder.

Move Action: Draw dagger.
Standard Action: Touch of Destiny on Ellowin. She gets a +1 bonus to attack rolls, skill rolls, ability checks, and saving throws for one round. Kara has 6 of 7 remaining for the day.

Once the snow begins to get deep, Ellowin puts on her snowshoes, grumbling about there being deep snow this time of year.

Perception in poor visibility: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 5 - 4 = 15

Ellowin moves forward, drawing her bow as she does. Reach a safer distance from the men, she draws an arrow, nocks it in the bow, and lets it fly at the man closest to her.

Ranged attack within 30': 1d20 + 5 - 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 5 - 4 + 2 = 18
Damage if Hit: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 piercing damage

What happened to these men!? They look as if they should be dead!

Narsius draws his cutlass and walks slowly forward, going around the fight to try to flank one of Jack's opponents and trying not to hinder his companions.

Daevin's magic spell catches one of the frozen men's full attention, and it just stares at the little cloud of light.

Ellowin, with the calm precision of a lifetime hunter, burries an arrow in the dazzled creature's chest.

However, the creatures, still mindless in their attacks, reach out with blackened jaws to taste their first Vanara!

I need healing says Jack.

attack: 3 + 1d20 ⇒ 3 + (17) = 20 on the zombie furthest away from everyone with his axe.
damage: 3 + 1d12 ⇒ 3 + (12) = 15 slashing damage.

I think they are zombies the way you describe them and the way they look, I don't know for sure though.

EDIT: they are zombies, but you need to KN: religon to know that in character.

Jack slams his axe into the creature with a blow that should have killed it, but the ice crusted flesh seems more resilient than it looks.

"Jack! You need to move back!" Kara shouts out to the Vanara in fear. There's nothing I can do for his wounds, but at least I can help take down the enemy.

Kara mutters a short incantation, pointing her finger at the man Jack just took a swing at, hoping to drop it. A sky blue bolt of energy shoots from her finger, darting through Ellowin and Daevin, and arcing around Narsius and Jack before slamming into the frostbitten man's chest.

Kara will cast Magic Missile on the same zombie that was just hit by Jack's axe, hoping to drop it.
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Kara's bolt of energy punches through the creature's skull, dropping it to the ground.

Ellowin continues skirting the deeper snow off the path, trying to get to a better position. As she comes up to another tree, she pauses, draws another arrow to her bow, and lets it fly at the man still up, aiming for his side.

He needs to get out of there before they kill him!

I guess 6 is not enough to confirm that critical.

Ellowin burries another shaft in the creature's chest before Narsius saunters up and coolly decapitates it.

Seeing the threat pass, Jack collapses from loss of blood.

Jack falls unconscious and continues to bleed.

"I can't heal him any more, he will need to go back so he can recover fully... "

Kara, seeing that Jack is alive, though severely injured, sighs in relief. She mutters another short incantation and her eyes cloud faintly as she looks around, specifically at the two dead men.

Kara will cast Detect Magic and do a quick scan, making sure to pay special attention to the dead men.

Also, I'm taking some liberties with the description of the what the spell looks like (i.e. clouding eyes). I hope that's okay. I also might occasionally use spell components, even though I have Eschew Materials, simply because I think its interesting and adds to the flavor.

Eyeing the other wagon, Ellowin asks of Daevin, "Thank you. Can he walk on his own? It might be too dangerous to send him alone, someone should go with him. Kyrianna? Could you take him on your horse? I'd feel better if he were escorted, and you could get him back faster mounted. The rest of us would only slow you down."

Daevin looks at Jack with an analytical eye. "An escort would be good, I think." he looks at the rest of the party. "My capacity to heal is extremely limited, in fact I cannot heal again for some time. If what we just faced is any indicator to what lies ahead, we have to be smart." he remembers back to his travels. After all, those who fall to these gluttons are bound to find themselves hungry as well... he shudders, but not from the cold. "We have to be smart because in this case, an ounce of caution will save us more than a little trouble." he looks back at Jack. I am a man of my word. If Jaelin is in Heldren and I missed her, I had to heal you. If anyone else falls to these fiends... he scowls. No, we won't fall to these monsters. I will do everything I can to prevent it.

Kyrianna nods and slings a mostly senseless Jack over her horse's haunches. She rides out without a word.

No Knowledge (Religion) for me unless you allow me to make it untrained. I assume I would know the general idea of what necromancy does, but with Religion I won't know what type of undead the creature is.

Knowledge (Religion): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 Untrained, if you allow it.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 To identify the spell, if possible.

Kara turns to the group. "These corpses emanate a faint aura of necromancy. I think perhaps whatever caused these men to rise from the dead did so recently, or the aura would have likely faded by now."

Narsius cleans his sword but keeps it in his hand. He nods to Daevin.
"You're right. The man said we had to be careful of everything. Maybe we should look for tracks or something ? "
Meaning one of you should look. Unless you want me to track a squirrel and find a bear..

"It would be good to investigate this further and look for tracks. I don't like being shy two people, but we will make due however we can." He looks to Ellowin. "You said before that you can hunt, and with what I just witnessed, I can definitely see that you're good with a bow. My question is this: if you are able to find tracks, would you like to scout alone since I'm guessing you're no stranger to moving through the woods or would you prefer to have company and possibly be slowed down?" He smiles. "I know which I would prefer, but I would rather defer to your preference."

With the danger seemingly over, Kara will cautiously move to investigate the carriage the two severely frostbitten men had come out of. Before poking her head into the carriage, she mutters another incantation and her dagger begins to glow with a bluish light. She uses her dagger as a light source to better be able to see if there are any clues in the carriage.

Kara is casting Light on her dagger.

Perception: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20 Assuming no snow penalty since I'm looking inside the carriage.

Ellowin nods in agreement, "I can indeed look for tracks, but with this wind, I doubt I would be able to find anything over a day old. I can try, however. As for going alone or with company...", she trails off, biting her lip.

I usually go alone, but the dangers here are now unknown. If I were to track too far, or become ambushed, I'd be defenseless against an unknown enemy!

Making an internal decision, she turns to Daevin, "I would prefer company, even if it slows me down. I do not know what lurks within these woods now, as I did before." She then casts about for tracks that may give them some clue as to what lay beyond.

Daevin smiles with relief. "I was hoping you'd say that." He looks at Narsius "If you would like to stay with Kara while she investigates the carriage, Ellowin and I are going to scout a little farther on to see if we can find any enlightenment to what happened. If Kara happens to get done and we're still visible" he looks at the corpse, then back to Narsius. "Please join us." he says with a slightly joking tone that fully communicates how serious he is. His eyes gain a more serious composure. "We won't be venturing too far off for safety's sake."

"I understand. You want to be left alone with Ellowyn for a while. Sure, I'll help you, my friend."
Narsius smiles at his own poor joke but answers more seriously.
"I'll stay with Kara and protect her."

"Ah yes, because nothing speaks the language of romance more fluently than the walking dead." he says with a genuine laugh. His face takes on a more serious composure, but his smile still remains. "Thank you friend." With that, he turns and follows after Ellowin.

"Thank you, Narsius." Kara breathes a sigh of relief knowing that at least one of their party is staying behind with her. "I hate to ask this, but would you investigate the corpses? We should try and identify these men, if possible."

Still waiting on word of what, if anything, Kara found in the first carriage before moving on to the second.

Narsius beheads the first man and quickly but meticulously searches the bodies.

Narsius lops the head of the second creature, but before the scouts troop out, and before the magus can start his examinations, the second carriage starts rocking and muffled shouts for help escape.

The door and latch seem frozen shut...

Daevin looks at the rest of the party and then cautiously approaches the carriage. "I think I heard shouts of help from this carriage, but the door seems frozen shut. Let's try to break some of the ice keeping the door closed and try to open it. Just in case, though, it would be nice to have some help." he says with a cautious eye now on the door.

Once the others join him, he swings his longsword at the ice.

Kara does find the following: a gold signet ring with a crest of some nobility, a pair of silver earrings, a set of pearl inlaid bracelets, and several silver and gold necklaces.
