Daevin steps forward diplomacy: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 "We have been charged with an important task by the mayor that requires us to speak with the man in your charge." he pauses. bluff: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13"I don't think she'd be too pleased with anything or anyone hindering us on our mission."
GM DSP |
The elf woman steps forward, a blazing gaze locked on Daevin. "Heavy handed. And you're lying. Councilor Teppin asked for volunteers and Yuln here was never part of any 'mission' she may have given you."
"Now, you can leave my house." She stands hand on hips until Daevin removes himself.
Once he does so she turns to Narsius. "I am Tessaraea. Yuln can barely speak, but if he wants to talk to you, I will not stop you."
Daevin Arkinfald |
diplomacy: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Daevin sighs the way a man would at the end of a long day "My apologies, I just arrived in town today and believed that Councilor Teppin held the title of mayor. It was genuinely not my intention to lie to you. Apparently I my voice has reflected what I was not even aware of, that I am more frustrated than I know. With that in mind, again, you have my sincerest apologies. Nonetheless, I will honor your wishes and depart from your home." he says the last with a dip of his head as an acknowledgement and turns to depart. sense motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Ellowin Jax |
Ellowin thanks Tessaraea, "You have our gratitude, Tessaraea. The rest of us will wait outside while you confer with Yuln and see if he will speak with Narsius."
Gathering everyone else up with her, she motions out the door, "Come, come. It will not do to have everyone crowding around the poor man while he's recovering. We all have questions, but I think they're all the same. I'm sure Narsius has this well under hand."
On her way out the door, she looks apologetically to Tessaraea before closing the door against the colder outside air.
Stamping her feet and rubbing her hands, she looks to the others, "I think I'll head home and get my winter hunting kit while he asks the bodyguard his questions. I shouldn't be long. Don't leave without me!" she warns, before trotting off towards the edge of town.
GM DSP |
Tessaraea nods.
A short while later, she opens the door and beckons Narsius inside. She leads him to a back room where a large Ulfen man lies on a bed of rushes covered with a bear skin.
The man's face and hands are badly frostbiten. His voice is barely above a whisper as he tries to speak without moving his face.
"You have questions?"
GM DSP |
"They were everywhere..." the man's eyes cast about wildly, as if his attackers might be present in every shadow. "Only a handful of men mind you, but many, many others. Creatures of winter one and all: our blades were next to useless..."
A hand shoots out and grasps Narsius with alarming speed and power. He can see blackend blood pooling beneath the ruined skin.
"You have to save her. She cannot suffer for my failure. Please."
Kyrianna Idereen |
As Kyrianna waits outside with the others, she attempts that most dreaded of time-wasters.... small talk.
The half-elf clears her throat. "I've not been in this town for long; however, all of you appear to be newcomers as well. Have any of you ever had any experience with combat or reconnaissance? Perhaps any experience with snowy conditions, or ice?" Her voice, normally casual with Sophie, is polished and refined. It's a tactic so ingrained through etiquette training that Kyrianna does it without thinking: One gets only one chance to make a first impression, the duchess simpers in Kyrianna's mind.
Daevin Arkinfald |
Daevin looks up from the book he was about to read with a friendly smile. "Well, I do travel quite a bit, so I am no stranger to different languages and moving quietly when the situation demands it. If news is slow, I will fight for sport, to supplement my income. As far as genuine combat goes, I am alright with my longsword, I suppose, but I wouldn't boast of being any great swordsman." he nods at Kyrianna, "Yourself?"
Jack Speed-Runner |
Jack answers Kyriannas question in elven, as he doesn't want the humans to laugh at him, he has been bullied around before. He wasn't sure if they would doubt his abilities. Him and Kyrianna were the only two non-humans around, but he wishes there were more.

Ellowin Jax |
Ellowin comes trotting back with her gear and a longbow in hand. A hand axe hangs at her side. She looks surprised to see everyone still waiting outside for Narsius, "Is everything okay? I didn't think it would take this long to ask him a few questions..."
Daevin Arkinfald |
Daevin, interested in the other language, speaks something more to himself than anyone else, but he speaks it with curious eyes. "N'fheadar má labhraíonn duine ar bith anseo ar an teanga an Fey?"
He smiles at Ellowin as she approaches. "We have not seen anything of him yet, but I would imagine everything is ok. Were you able to find what you needed?"
Ellowin Jax |
Ellowin nods, "Yes, I was able to find everything, I think. Most of it was packed away, so I hope it was everything. I usually plan my hunts out the night before setting out, so this is all a little faster than what I'm used to!"
Dressed from head to toe in thick furs, even the leather armor she now wears over her winter clothing is layered in various pelts. She smiles nervously, leans her well-oiled bow against the wall, and struggles into her heavy backpack.
Daevin Arkinfald |
Daevin nods. "I'm glad you were able to find everything! There have definitely been a few times when I have left and accidentally forgotten something." He says with the chuckle that one has when there is enough distance between memory and the present to make stress amusing. "But thankfully this hasn't happened too recently...I think. Anyway, how long have you been hunting for?"
Jack Speed-Runner |
I don't think we asked the survivor question yet
Jack asks the survivor questions.
This is really important to us, but who or what attacked you?
If that is answered Jack will ask another.
What can you tell us about these people/things? What they look like, what they do, any weakness they have, as in are they slow, are they stupid, does electricity hurt them? And so on. Psychical and mental weaknesses. We have to know what we are dealing with inside and out.
After the conversation and the answers Jack will thank the man for his time.
Ellowin Jax |
Ellowin watches worriedly as Jack continues to try to get back inside, "Hey, hey there... it's okay! Calm down, calm down. There now. I'm sure Narsius has the situation well under control. I'm not sure if you know how Tessaraea can be normally, but when it comes to her patients, she's very stern. I had the fever two summers back and it was all my sister could do just to see me! But don't worry, that poor man's in good hands with her. He'll be okay. It's okay. Shhhh."
Does he understand me? I hope so, before this gets out of control!
Jack Speed-Runner |
I just want to ask him some questions is all. It is very important to me to know who the attackers where and what they were. I just want to know what I'm up against. When you find out info like this and I've done it before, you will have knowledge that will help you later. I just want to know what he saw and how to deal with what he saw.
Ellowin Jax |
Ellowin sighs, "Which is what Narsius is inside asking about. We all want to know what he saw, but we can't all be in there asking him a dozen different questions. He isn't well. It's probably difficult enough with just one in there. Relax. I am sure Narsius will get the information we need, and if not, we'll just have to adapt."
Smiling apologetically, she turns back to Daevin, "He's, ummm, new to the village, as well. He does tend to get pretty excited like this from what I've seen."
Turning to Kyrianna, Ellowin looks pleased that she is there, "I am glad you are coming, Kyrianna. As I was telling Daevin here, it's good that the militia are sending someone to help, and we value your knowledge. Do you know anything further about what's going on deeper in the woods? Most of the other hunters, myself included, were just warned not to venture too deep. We were told nothing of what lay there, just that it was too dangerous."
Jack Speed-Runner |
Jack is like, really. Well, I hope he is asking the right questions. Didn't know someone else was asking him questions already, he better return to us with information on how to defeat the enemy or information that can be useful in battle.
Daevin Arkinfald |
Daevin looks at Jack."The man is injured, critically potentially. This is not an interrogation. Narsius could come out and not know anything more than us. If that is the case, we accept what we know and approach the matter more cautiously." he folds his arms. "After all, we have already taken part of the element of surprise from them because we know that there is a foe out there. Unlike that poor guard."
Jack Speed-Runner |
I'm not here for an interrogation. The problem is though if the enemy is what I think they are, I may not have enough gold to purchase what I need yet. If the enemy is what I think it is, then I have to figure out if the arcanists have an advantage or if the combatants do. I was told once that trolls are weak against fire and acid, and they are large sized, making them easier to hit, but I don't know about these enemies and they probably aren't trolls, and everything has a weakness, sometimes it is stupidity, sometimes it is slowness, sometimes it is lack of strength, other times elements, that is what I'm after. They have fought these creatures many times.
Jack looks at Daevin directly in the eyes.
My weakness is that I won't back down sometimes. Another weakness, sometimes I'm greedy.
Daevin Arkinfald |
He stares right back. "Don't presume to know what we're up against. We could be going into a fight against sorcerers. We could be going into a fight against fey. We could be going into a fight against the gods themselves, but if that man in there doesn't know anything, then where does that put us? We have to be ok with what we presently know because we may not get to know more. We also have to be ok with Narsius asking the questions at the moment because the last thing we need is an angry apothecary completely banishing us from ever being able to find out whatever the man does know!" Daevin pauses to let his words sink in. "And, for the record, if we come up against something that we cannot beat at that moment, you will need to overcome your 'weakness' because I refuse to die for your weakness. I refuse to let anyone here die for your weakness. Sometimes, if it means living, saving another, or in this case" he gestures to the door "enabling another to do what they can to ensure our success, it's good to 'back down'" he says this calmly, with enough resolve to communicate his determination.
Jack Speed-Runner |
I guess I will have to do this the hard way, I will have to study the creatures to learn their weaknesses, grr, they will thank me later when I kept them all alive, or at the very least I'll just save myself.
If you think it is fey, they say cold-iron works, the problem being is that you have to know that what you are fighting is a fey, if it is a sorceror, get in close.
Jack wants to buy materials for a cold iron dagger. A cold iron dagger costs 4 GP, double price, but he is buying materials for it instead, it says to pay 1/3 the cost in silver, which is 14 silver, he is going to craft himself a cold iron dagger later on which takes no more than a day or two, as he has to craft 40 silver worth in a day, which is the DCxresult, craft weapon is 4, if I take ten it would be 14X12=168. 168/7=24. If I took 10, it would take me at most 2 days, and you can bet Jack will forgo sleep to become fatigued to do this.
Daevin Arkinfald |
Daevin sighs internally to himself. "I didn't say they were fey. I was using the fey as an example, just like the sorcerers and the gods. My point was that if we can accept that we may only know what we know now, everything we learn will be a blessing. My point was also that if we go into this with assumptions of what it could be, especially at this point, we would be putting ourselves in more danger than going into it with what we know now." he continues calmly. "I mean, the man in there could have taken a hit to the head that wiped his memory, his memories could have been magically tampered with, or his brain could have suppressed the memories of what he witnessed if he witnessed something too traumatic for him to cope with. The fact is if we know nothing, we can be ready for anything. If we think we know something but it's wrong, we won't be ready at all."
Jack Speed-Runner |
Fine, no materials, Jack wants to know if the shops has any cold-iron weapons, he asks for them, just because he mentioned it. He doesn't even know what it will do, or even if he is right on his fey theories, maybe there aren't any fey for miles, and maybe they are actually resistant to the material, but hey why not, more toys for Jack to play with, Jack isn't even sure if he would recognize a fey on sight.
He wants his dagger if they have it, what a wonderful throwing weapon.
I'm trying really hard to make Jacks personality unique.
Jack Speed-Runner |
Masterwork weapon. I can't afford that yet. Are any of those 3 daggers cold iron? If Yes, he pays 4 gold to aquire one. If No he says... I'll have to wait for my new toy.
One of these days, I will acquire an adamantine something as well, maybe
I'll have to stick to my job, Jack thought. I'm good at searching for treasure, search every square inch, search well, search throughly, and double and triple search everything. Dig it up, search in hidden areas, check areas that others already have and you might have to keep to yourself.
Jack Speed-Runner |
Jack will also ask for a shovel if any shop has one, if he is going to obsess about treasure hunting, he will need ways to dig up buried treasure, assuming it exists. If the shop has one as well, he pay 2 gold for it, if the shop says it is more than the standard price, he will pay whatever amount for a shovel. I really should have come more prepared, trying to treasure hunt without a shovel, I should be ashamed of myself
I hope Narsius Lewynn hurries up. And I hope the other humans stop giving me a hard time
Narsius Lewynn |
Narsius nods once more at the wounded man.
"We'll go and look for her. Don't worry and stay safe."
With those words, he leaves the room and goes back to the others, shrugging when he sees them.
"Didn't learn much, that man's name must be Jon Snow.... he knows nothing."
Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
"They were attacked by men and some unknown creatures. He doesn't know how many and he doesn't know where they went."
Jack Speed-Runner |
He didn't tell you anything at all Narsius? You were in there quite a while. Even the tiniest bit of info would be helpful. I'm sure he told you something, even minor details are okay.
Ellowin Jax |
Ellowin smiles as Narsius exits the building, "Very well, then. Is everyone prepared? If so, I suggest we be on our way to find out what happened."
It feels like we've been standing out here for weeks! And it's only getting colder...
If everyone is prepared, then Ellowin will lead off towards the Border Wood, an area she is fairly familiar with.
