I was unsure if just being in water qualified for cover. Thanks for the clarification.

So, Lee starts thinking about how to handle a bunch of grindylows at once. He has Shocking Grasp. Everyone but Lee, Muffin, and Rosie is immersed in salt water. Has he ever heard (in class or in discussions with other mages in the family) about what would happen if you cast Shocking Grasp in or on water?

If Spellcraft is the more appropriate skill to use, the result should be a 25.

I'm not sure where Thren is, but I'm moving us forward.

Threnody climbs onto the grille and casts cure light wounds on herself. Healing: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Five grindylows move into position to engage in melee with Lark and Rosie (#3 5-foot-steps (he has a Swim speed so is unhindered ((they can't climb on the grille as a 5' step though))) by Lark and 4 and 5 move in).

The others start pushing and shoving their way into the tunnel.

I'd rather keep things moving--if you're ever showing up and think you need to wait before posting because of something, please say so, so we know we need to push things along. I've been in a lot of PBPs and know loss of momentum, especially during combat, can be fatal to a campaign, so I'm sensitive to that. If folks don't post, I have no way of knowing if someone is just waiting, or they've left the game, or if they're trapped under a heavy object, or busy committing mass murder in Wal-Mart's stock room. :)

And speaking of waiting, I would like y'all's response to my post in discussion. This is not a call I would like to make without player input.

Thren sees the next grindylow move up to her and bats its spear aside with her own blade. Her follow-through is dead-on, stabbing deep into its midsection with her glowing blade. As she tries to extract her weapon, it momentarily gets stuck in the creature's floating ribs. Pulling it free, she almost slams the pommel of her rapier into her jaw.

That is sooooo annoying that my first critical threat in a while is matched with a natural 1 for the confirmation roll. Maintains the average, but still....

The stats were shared when Lee was given the items (I looked this up using the "search this thread" function with Krine as the keyword); please be sure when you receive such things that you record any stats you need ASAP--I will always give the stats upon identification, but it is your responsibility to accurately track what your gear does.

Anyway, what they do is: if you succeed on a ranged touch attack, the bullets nauseate the target unless they succeed on a DC 13 Fortitude save. You have three of them.

I will follow up with the grindylows' turn later today.

Thren sputters and regains her footing before stabbing at the next grindylow. But her hair falls into her eyes at the wrong moment, blinding her for a split-second and causing her attack to go high over her opponent's shoulder. That grindylow gets to see her crimson rapier pass by harmlessly at close range....

Grindylow 12 gets a novel idea and tries to help the grindylow in front of him get some leverage on Rosie.

Grindylow 2 manages to stab and bite savagely into Rosie.

The grindylow bites off a good chunk of her arm, chewing and swallowing, then grinning with bloody teeth as Rosie succumbs to her wounds and falls unconscious and bleeding onto the top of the grille.

A grindylow grabs Thren and knocks her down again, and several manage to get their tentacles around Lark's legs and trip him up savagely, with one of the final attackers able to easily wound him with spear and tooth as well.

The grindylows swipe at Thren even as she tries to kip up as smoothly as Lark, and doesn't quite make it.

Between the two successful spear hits, Thren hits the water and grill again hard. This time, however, she is slow to rise, and the last grindylow's bite elicits a scream as its teeth tear into her shoulder where she'd been injured before. Her blood joins Rosie's in the water now, but Thren is barely conscious. She tries to murmur an incantation to heal her wounds.

I had my hp as 12 prior to getting hit by the AoO, the second spear hit, and the bite. That took me to 0 hp, so that's a first.

Once the grindylows' numbers equal the party's they realize they have no further advantage. Ears flattening in fear and disappointment, they all withdraw, going back the way they came to the north.

Because #8 moves through more than one threatened square, Rosie and Threnody still get attacks of opportunity against it. Lark gets an attack of opportunity versus #9.

Nah, this is the way my luck normally works. When I was younger, I'd do whatever I could to maximize my odds of success and minimize the effects of random die rolls. As I get older, I realize it doesn't matter, my luck will always be bad. At least this time it didn't hurt me. And I live knowing somewhere in the universe is someone who can walk into a casino, play one hand of blackjack, and win thousands of dollars without knowing a lick of the game. I just can't find them to take it from them, just my luck LOL

Lark takes a few deep breaths to calm his breathing and then turns to his companions, "Lee, Rosie, that was incredible timing with the recovery. When you jumped up and killed that one, and then they all turned tail and ran for it, amazing! Thren, I don't know if I could have kept fighting after taking hits like those. Are you OK?" Glancing around at the dead grindylows, Lark continues, "I don't know if I've said it lately, but I sure am glad to be fighting beside y'all."

After another long breath Lark says, "But maybe we can wait just a bit before the next bout of blade work. I sure could use a breather. Maybe we search these remains too."

Can Rosie replenish her stock of javelins from the spears the grindylows were using?

The spears cannot be turned into javelins, but they are crude but adequate Small sized spears. You can recover up to 8 of them. One of the grindylows also dropped a set of manacles.

The party searches the room and apart from the spears and one set of manacles, they find nothing of interest. The kelp-filled room, apart from being a trap, likely serves as a food source for the squid and whatever more ordinary sea life that dwell here.

The party has the choice of going north or going back the way they came. They are aware it's now at least a day and a half since Cog and Sandara were kidnapped, and given the grindylows' propensity for chewing off and eating pieces of their victims, they probably will be continually the worse for wear the longer it takes the party to find them--if, of course, they are alive at all.

"Much as I hate to say it, we need to keep going," Thren says. As she speaks, she's checking her wounds. The tiefling is covered in her own blood at this point, with several sizable holes in her attire from the spear wounds she took. "But I'm going to say this now, I'm out of healing magic."

Am I remembering correctly that using a weapon not sized for you confers a -2 penalty to attack rolls? I'm considering picking up some of their spears for the time being myself.
