Loot Sheet

A small band of mariners find themselves press-ganged into service on the Wormwood, led by the fearsome Barnabas Harrigan. Will they turn their misfortune to glory on the high seas, or will folly lead them to an ignominious watery death?

Good luck with everything Lathiira.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Thanks. Just need to get through the week with everything going decently so I can go back to normal work stress.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

I hear ya. I'd invite you to unwind by coming over and seeing Black Panther, but it sounds like you have other plans. :) (KeefX if you're up for it Friday night or Sunday let me know. thermopyle I'd invite you but the drive's a little far.)

On a note about the game: I think we've discussed something like this in games past but have been inconsistent about implementing it; further I as a player just gave this suggestion to my GM, and so it seems reasonable to propose this as a GM:

We are at the beginning of a possibly long-ish dungeon crawl. Since I know you are sensible players of reasonably sensible (average Wisdom at least) PCs... I think we can determine that you will probably search every room you go through.

Can we assume that, where plausible (e.g., toxic slime isn't actively melting your brains), you take 10 to search the room once all immediate hostilities are resolved? I will therefore go with a take-10 result from the highest Perception score among the conscious characters present in the room.

You are always welcome to roll Perception additionally (in case you suspect you need better-than-10 to get everything you're looking for), or describe particular searching techniques if you think something is up (e.g., "I check the statue for hidden compartments"), but I figure by taking 10 this saves time for the PBP format rather than having to wait for rolls.

The other side of this is if I say, "there is nothing of interest in this room" then you can reasonably trust that comment. If there's a series of rooms that are mainly window-dressing I'll just say, "you checked these rooms and there's nothing there."

Regarding traps, I'll assume you check doors you are about to open, but I will need specifics on where else you might check.

Sound ok?

That sounds fine to me.

Lathiira, ditto what DQ said, best wishes getting back to a more regular stress level.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Definitely want to see Black Panther. Just don't have the hours and the energy this week.

When normal stress sound comforting, you've really got some stress going on. Good luck getting back to normal/tolerable.

I like the plan for auto checking.

On a completely different subject--need some advice and realized you guys would be good to ask. This has nothing to do with this game, need advice as a player in another. :)

So, say you are playing a human arcane duelist bard in a city-intrigue-heavy game.

Your current cohorts are a melee-based multiclass rogue, a sometimes meleeing multiclass cleric, and a enchantment-focused sorceress. Everyone's quite effective at what they do, though a little fragile. A dedicated tank may or may not be invited to join the party.

As an arcane duelist you are decent at melee and have as a bonus feat Disruptive, which means you make it harder for spellcasters to cast spells when you can AOO them. You will get further bonus feats up this tree, and overall even with a lot of melee-based folks, your ability to harry spellcasters allows you to help in a specific way.

The adventure is at a point where there is a lot of downtime available and you want to retrain Lingering Performance into a more useful combat feat--Lingering Performance is nice but in practice you haven't used it much.

What you want to do is since you get Disruptive (and eventually Spellbreaker) for free, you want to take more advantage of these feats and your anti-spellcaster capabilities, especially since you anticipate this is going to be a campaign with a lot of spellcaster enemies.

Option 1:
Combat Reflexes. This lets you make AOOs when flat-footed (which in turn makes Disruptive work on the first turn of combat) and make a number of AOOs per round equal to your Dex modifier (for this character, this is only +1 attack, as Dex mod is +2). Combat Reflexes also leads to, eventually, more options: Combat Patrol which increases range of AOOs (really handy, but also has Dodge and Mobility as prereqs so it would take forever to get) or Stand Still which lets you roll to stop people from moving past you.

Option 2:
Step Up. This is the feat that lets you take a 5 foot step to follow your opponent doing the same thing. So they try to take a 5 foot step to cast and you just follow them right behind. This also has additional tree feats, Following Step and Step Up and Strike which are pretty cool.

I am leaning toward option 2, but Combat Reflexes would still also be really useful for the build. I am also open to entirely different alternatives. (E.g., since she's also got the appropriate prereqs, I may get Disheartening Display at some point to build off her Intimidation and Dirge of Doom abilities).

I think going first is usually best, so if you don't have Improved Init, it would be something to consider. That way you push the action instead of responding to it.

Option #2 sounds like a lot of fun. But once you use Step Up a few times, your GM will go with a "move then cast" strategy and will abandon the "5' step then cast" strategy. Then, possibly, you'll be wanting the more flexible Combat Reflexes.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

The one thing with Combat Reflexes: while getting more AoOs is nice, it won't help with your Spellbreaker theme unless you somehow start out a fight right beside your spellcasting foe. As a feat on its own, it's good. It might even lead to a useful sideline. Of the two you mention, it'll take a while to get Combat Patrol, which will be useful at times. Stand Still, however, might be really helpful. I would also look to see if there are more feats that use Combat Reflexes as a prereq that you find interesting. Can't hurt to think about other options.

Step Up: this one will likely have some use. If you want to continue your anti-caster theme, I think this one fits better overall.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Thanks folks. KeefX, I appreciate the strategy, but if I take Improved Initiative, that will just guarantee I roll a 1 on initiative every time. :) Still you both have given me some good stuff to think about. The Combat Reflexes tree would be even more tempting of some of its tree abilities weren't fighter-only.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

I also want to make it clear, before anyone asks, that all doors in this dungeon are sliding doors, and do not use hinges in any way.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

ROFL

Given I had a centaur character long ago who knocked one such door off its track and then had problems getting it open, that might not help us much!

Forces of Nature Battlemap

As long as you don't argue about what kind of track it is or the physics of sliding-door mechanisms, that's fine. Also, I'm not going to worry about that until your character can transform into a centaur.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

I find your decision to be quite lenient and shall not push my luck further with doors at this time.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

...and it looks like our old friend up over Philly got pneumonia. 'Con is obviously out, so now prayers are in order.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Yikes. Prayers indeed.

Lathiira - best wishes for your friend.

Just to double check my understanding - we're doing a "take 10" search of every room we enter, right? So any obvious signs or features in the passages will be called out in the description, yes?

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Thanks. I'm sure our former arcane archer appreciate it when I hear from him.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Thermopyle, Yes, if they would be seen in a take-10 search.

Question: Who's got two thumbs and a fresh new job?
Answer: This guy.
W00t!

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Nice. What'cha doin' this time?

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

AWESOME. Congrats, KeefX.

I should have given more advance warning than this, but visiting the fam over the weekend. I know you're waiting on me and I will move us on hopefully soon, but getting ready right now. Your patience in advance is appreciated.

KeefX - congrats!

More computer nerdy stuff.
I'm at a place called Lauriate. The are in Baltimore. Inner Harbor East.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Sweet. We should grab dinner some time.

Has Thren taken a round 2 action? It might be her turn to walk over and attack the incutilis (or do something else). If we're back to the top round 3 then Lark will attack, but I'll wait so I don't throw us out of order.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

No, it's Thren's turn (and then technically Creed's)

Is it reasonable that Lark would know how ioun stones work? If not, I guess we can pretend he had a conversation with Lee about them.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

I'm going to say yes, they're common enough or at least discussed enough that you've heard of them.

Lee would be forthcoming about the use of ioun stones in general and the effect of this stone in particular.

Worryingly, I've had another post disappear. It was just a flubbed Dungeoneering roll about the current fight we are in, so no great loss. But it may have been made with my iPad.
Does anyone else use anything other than a PC to post?
How about non-computer devices (like tablet or phone)?
I wonder if Paizo's updated site is just unfriendly toward devices and/or non-PC's.

RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

I use my Android phone all the time, and I don't get more posts eaten than on my computer. I seldom have posts eaten--although it does happen. Often it's because I'm hitting some kind of timeout (aggravated by multiple tabs being open, according to some folks wiser in tech than I).

They've also been doing a lot of upgrades and you could have happened to have posted right when they were tweaking something.

I usually copy my post text before hitting submit (harder to do on a non-OC device, mind). That way if my post does get eaten, I can just recreate it.

If it keeps happening, you might want to post the issue in the Website Feedback forum.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

I haven't had any posts vanish lately, and I post from my desktop or once in a while from my laptop. I think what DQ said covers it, but time will tell.

GMDQ - I moved the light outline Lark was using to reflect his coin toss. Would you prefer some kind of skill or attack roll to verify where the coin lands?

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Nah, just pick a spot.

The disappearing posts have just been a recent thing for me and is probably associated with the website revamp.
Just don't think I've dropped off the planet if, for some reason, I haven't posted. :-)

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Thanks. If you seem conspicuously absent I'll text.

Does the red Incutilis threaten Lee with an AoO?
It has a 0' reach and I looked thru the rules but couldn't find anything solid.
This has an impact on Lee's next turn.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

On a completely unrelated note, our bard (me) saw in Baltimore last night to see Nightwish live with a friend. They rocked the Lyric. I feel quite inspired.

Now back to our regularly scheduled combat :-)

My reading of those rules is that no, the incutilis does not threaten the spaces around it. It can't attack those spaces normally so it can't make an AoO into that square either.

Laathira - that sounds like an awesome show. I'd not heard of Nightwish before, but I'm listening to some now. I don't seriously follow the genre, but a random recommendation from my music player got me into Delain last year.

Female Elf Bard (scholar of legends) 20

Delain is good too.

Re: the threatened space and AoO. If you don't threaten a space, you don't get to AoO into it. A reach of 0' means you threaten nothing at all unless it moves directly into your space. Subject to any special rules a given creature may have, of course.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

Incutilis by themselves are Tiny so no they don't threaten. (The rules imply, but aren't clear, they can use their puppet's reach, but this one doesn't have a puppet.) Mind, they only have an attack bonus of +2 so it's not like a huge deal if they do threaten anyway.

Thanks for the input on the AoO thing.

I'm not familiar with Nightwish, but a little YouzTubez should set that straight shortly.

Round #3 of the current combat wasn't nearly as exciting for Lee as I originally envisioned.
I was going to have him take a few steps E then put a Fireball down the south running corridor.
Then I realized that I have no idea how long the corridor is. Or if there's a bend in it.

It looks like Paizo has changed the character headers.
We had a clever thing going on there with the links to the maps and all.
Also, it looks like "How to format your text" is a dead link now.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

The header is okay,I just accidentally posted with the wrong alias, and the headers don't update when you edit to change your alias.

I moved Lark's token on the map just to be clear about where he wants to go. Before heading off he will wait for any comments or suggestions about backtracking.

How about if we moved about halfway toward the ship and then covered our various lighted objects? Maybe there's enough light coming from the ship to work with. Then we might be slightly less obvious targets on our final approach.

Forces of Nature Battlemap

The light from the ship is not enough (it's another light spell, so you'd have to get within 40 feet of it to see anything). You can just about see it and vaguely the shapes around it, and that's it.

You also haven't seen exactly how to get to the ship (unless you plan on using your boat hat in the icky water), which may alter your plans.

Yeah, let's stay out of that water. I guess we'll just follow the path westward and hope it wraps all the way around to the ship.
