The -20 penalty is to make and maintain the grapple, so since I didn't see a -20 in any of the checks, I didn't worry overmuch about that option. But as you said, the orc is deceased.

What kind of an action is it to make the Strength check to free oneself from a tanglefoot bag?

If it's just a move action, Str Check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Otherwise, Jillia would move 4 spaces due north, to close on the other archers. Nope, she 5foot stepped. Disregard.

It is very expensive. Given he is now 9th level, that is a good (albeit a bit of a stretch) time to buy. Earlier it would have been just too much, and you need a lot of rep to be able to purchase it anyway.

A reminder/heads up about gazes and their mitigation:
If you start your turn within the Bodak's range you'll have to take a Fort Save, but if you avert your eyes (and give it concealment) you get a 50% chance to negate the effect. If you close your eyes, or face entirely the other way, you don't have to take the save at all, but are effectively blind.

Given that there was advance warning, was there time to avert ze eyes?

Also, I'm a total ditz when it goes to figuring out level stuff for drain, so could someone please run the numbers or give me a cheat sheet, because it looks like Andrietta is heading towards Ragewraith status herself at this point?

Thanks in advance. Distracted this evening, she'll be total defense and averting her eyes because cold old bones are slow.

This is going to be an odd thing as well. Had to look up translucent.

translucent: (of a substance) allowing light, but not detailed shapes, to pass through; semi-transparent.

How would that affect the gaze attack since it goes through two walls of translucent material?

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

There is absolutely time for Andrietta to avert her gaze and go for full defense. Here's your cheat sheet for Negative Levels: for each Negative Level you have, take a -1 on any d20 roll you make, lose 5 hp from your current and maximum hp, and count as one level lower for things that have changing numbers based on what level you are (like smite, or a fireball's damage)

And Celie, with as often as transparent and translucent are conflated, I'd need Wall of Blindness/Deafness to call out that it blocked line of sight/effect/what have you in more than a potentially inferential way before I'd be comfortable with that ruling.

Liberty's Edge

As far as I can tell, Andrietta, only one of those attacks hit you, if your AC is 26.

Negative levels don't actually reduce your level, of course, but impose penalties:

Quote:
For each negative level a creature has, it takes a cumulative –1 penalty on all ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, the creature reduces its current and total hit points by 5 for each negative level it possesses. The creature is also treated as one level lower for the purpose of level-dependent variables (such as spellcasting) for each negative level possessed. Spellcasters do not lose any prepared spells or slots as a result of negative levels. If a creature’s negative levels equal or exceed its total Hit Dice, it dies.

So, -1 to your attack, CMB, CMD, skill checks, and saving throws, and -5 to your max and current HP. Your smite will do 1 less damage, since it's level dependent, and spells with a level-dependent duration or effect will be lower.

Looking through different posts... It's annoying how often people mess up words in major publications.

Any ruling on how a blinding a creature would effect its gaze attack?

12/15/18 - 10/11/13 Social Media Booster (CPR),

It would certainly be unable to target people with its gaze as a standard action, but, while I think it would be a reasonable house rule, I don't think there's strong support for blinding them removing the passive effects of their gaze attack.

My big precedent there is that if you're in darkness, it only matters if you yourself have darkvision, not if the gazing creature does.

Silver Crusade

Male Dwarf 5 images; Bard lvl12 (still to level up from 11); AC 20 (22 w/cats grace; 23 haste); HP 80/80; Fort +8; Ref +9; Will +9; SM +21; Perc +15; init +4; Music left 25/31; reroll @+4 1/1; loremaster 1/1; IGF 1/1;

Reading the entry on gaze attacks it says
A gaze special attack takes effect when foes look at the attacking creature’s eyes.

So the passive effect certainly reads as you looking at it. Some forms of blindness might however damage the eyes (maybe giving them milky cataracts?) that would be pure GM ruling though.

In regards to this fight, if the bodak is still alive when these nearby ragewights are dispatched, Jillia will focus on that. (Rolling fort saves, not averting her eyes. It's gotta go.) Unless it has been significantly damaged, she'll challenge it as well.

Thanks!

You don't normally get to save against the negative level until it can wear off the next day, more is the pity. On the plus side, restoration is much cheaper if you do it before it becomes a permanent negative level

Probably, although not intentionally.

Sometimes there are topics that there are limited jokes for - undead. And after seven or eight rounds of combat with them, I'm bound to repeat.

I just love the idea of a dwarf that tells jokes.

As noted, Rhuul is not exactly an optimized character. Even with versatile performance, skill focus(comedy) and prodigy (dance and comedy) are not exactly top tier feats.

And picking a race with a penalty to chr for a casting class based off Chr...

So I try to make up for it a bit with his personality, and jokes!

Jilla could spend 2 PP to get Restoration cast on herself which would take care of her strength damage and the temporary negative level in one go.

Maybe we could apply the 3 point lesser restoration to Rhuul instead? And Johann could help out with casting one to take care of the remaining Int damage? 1 point of damage isn't that big a deal, but if there's more shades in the next encounter, one point could possibly be the difference between death and survival.

Liberty's Edge

M Gnome Alchemist (Preservationist) 9 | HP 57/57 | AC 23 T 15 FF 19 | CMB +5; CMD 19 | Ft +8 (+2 vs poison) / Rf +11 / Wi +5 (+1 vs enchantment spells & effects)| Init +4 | Per. +14 | Bombs 21/21

This is the last encounter, though, isn't it? We better use everything. I'll take Precise strike even though I don't expect to be in melee. I'll use brawler's flexibility shortly to take rapid shot, which will let me throw even more bombs.
