A brash serpentine fellow comes rushing up, huffing and puffing.

”Whew, I ain’t missed it, has I? Why, I could never show my face to Ole Granpappy if I missed my big chance to finally be a Batfinder, not after all the stories he’s told me. ‘Course, I dunno that I believe all his tales, sometimes I guess he might be pulling my scales, on account of I ain’t the smartest of the litter, I’ll give you that, but then when he goes on telling me that he’s met Paula Deens’ mounts what’re smarter ‘n me, well then I just up and decided, I’ll be a Batfinder too, and go find these mounts and see for myself if theys really as smart as all that.”

An elf, out of breath and red in the face, arrives at shortly after the Nagaji. After noticing they were still waiting on a few more he adjusted the well-fitted dueling leathers and reset his greying ponytail. He takes a deep breath before addressing his fellow companions.

"Malvic Trist. Exemplar of Nethys. Dark Archive Researcher. Duelist. So that dwarf, Mavarion, was a charming fellow...wasn't he? Not important. And you all are?" Malvic asks with a hint of arrogance in his tone.

The jarring screech of sharp-edged metal on stone comes from down the street, getting louder as it gets closer, then abruptly stops as it reaches the door. Exactly six raps on the door are heard, then a moment of silence before the door is finally opened, and in walks a profoundly disquieting individual: Sinuous muscles can be seen beneath marble-white skin, its movements are rigid, odd, and punctuated by the occasional small spasm, and its sex is impossible to determine for sure, for in addition to its fine kimono, it wears a stunning metal-and-cloth full mask that reveals only the wearer's eyes: two stark white almonds, as cold and bright as distant stars. Its right arm hangs rather limply over a small hexagonal spellbook and a sheaf of various wands, and its left arm rests on the hilt of a massive, black sword. It speaks not a word, but sits down and breaks out a set of fine jade dominoes to play with.

After a few knocks, the door cracks open and a young human man's face peeks through the gap. Deciding he's come to the right place, he opens the door all the way and steps in. He is clad in a long, sleeveless orange tunic with a red and orange sash wrapped around his waist, and dark trousers. His wrists are wrapped in bandages, and the dark red bracers he is wearing match the guards on his shins. His long brown hair is tied back behind his head.

The man stops and looks around at the others. "Am I late?" he inquires. "Later than all of you, of course, but I don't think I'm actually late..."

He trails off for a moment, then shrugs. A more confident expression comes across his face. "Well, regardless. My name is Valon Soranus," he says with a bow and a smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you all."

Getting this started! Saves versus Block Text!

Having all been summoned to the office of the Master of Spells, the Pathfinder agents take a few moments to convene and prepare. The dwarf, charming as he was (all 5 Charisma of him), did not reveal much about the mission ahead. If he knew anything about it himself, that is. But there always will be time to learn about one's fellow agents and the task at hand. In this case, there is no need to wait.

The courtyard outside of Sorrina Westyr’s office is a tribute to the element of earth. Large, dark boulders jut from a carpet of smooth pebbles. Wildflowers and moss spring from the cracks between the stones. The Master of Spells’ slate-gray skin seems to blend into the rock she lounges on in the sun-dappled courtyard, her face upturned to the cloudless sky. Sorrina stretches luxuriously before turning to smile.

“Enjoy the open air while you can, Pathfinders,” she says. “You are to be among the first agents sponsored to explore the planes—the Plane of Earth, to be exact. Reyshal ik Jalman, the Society’s contact on the Plane of Earth, recently alerted us to a rare opportunity. The Sultana’s constant war with the City of Brass means the shaitan empire needs more soldiers, and they have begun recruiting off-world mercenaries to train alongside their military. That’s where you come in.” Westyr leaps to her feet in a fluid motion, pulling an amethyst crystal wrapped in copper wire from her pocket.

“Please travel with Reyshal to the Opaline Vault. He can pull some strings to get you in with the mercenary company known as the Ungrounded. Complete the basic training and prove to your superiors that the Pathfinders are useful allies. Reyshal and I believe that working with the Ungrounded will lay the foundation for an alliance with the Peerless Empire. What’s more, this is an excellent means for you to establish your own professional credentials and connections.” Westyr pauses to brush a fallen leaf from her hair. “I’ll contact Reyshal as soon as you’re ready.”

Knowledge (planes) will tell you more. You are not on much of a clock here, so spending four hours researching in the Lodge's libraries will give you a +2 bonus on your check.

Knowledge (planes) DC 10+:
The Plane of Earth is fixed in location and comprised of a vast network of tunnels and caverns. Though the plane itself is generally suitable for humanoid life, common hazards include cave-ins, poisonous gasses, and pockets of molten rock near its border with the Plane of Fire.

15+:
Creatures indigenous to the Plane of Earth include crystal dragons, earth elementals, mephits, oreads, shaitans, xiomorns, and xorns.

20+:
The Opaline Vault, also known as the Rainbow Metropolis, is the breathtaking capital of the shaitan’s Peerless Empire, and a planar hub for entertainment and trade. Sultana Ashadieeyah bint Khalid rules from a gem-studded palace that towers over the city’s skyline. The Vault’s diverse population includes a small percentage of noble shaitans known as pashas, as well as dwarves, elementals, elves, and oreads.

25+:
Sultana Ashadieeyah bint Khalid is driven by the desire to avenge her father, causing her to pour ever-increasing resources into her war with the efreet. In recent decades, the gorgeous and prosperous capital has declined, and corruption is at an all-time high. Efreet and ifrits are treated with contempt or open hostility in the Opaline Vault.

30+:
In addition to being the seat of the Peerless Empire’s power, the Opaline Vault is a hub for extraplanar visitors. Many organizations hoping to forge alliances within shaitan society establish headquarters there. The Aspis Consortium set up a small outpost on the outskirts of the city in recent years and has already infiltrated the empire’s military.

Drukpa quivers with excitement. It's really happening, I'm a Batfinder now, about to go on my first mission, Granpappy will be so proud.... He begins to hone his bardiche, sure that it won't be long before he has a chance to show his prowess in battle. "You can count on us, m'am! We won't let you down! So the first thing we're needin' to do is... go to the libaree?" Drukpa trails off in confusion and perhaps a bit of disappointment. But he is nothing if not a would-be dutiful Batfinder, so off he heads to the Lodge's libraries, where he puts in the long hours (to him, it seems like *much* longer than four hours!) wading through the books. They are clearly pretty unfamiliar to him, and more than once the Lodge librarian has to remind him that the books are not to be literally waded through. Finally, though, Drukpa emerges from his research, feeling that he has learned as much about the Plane of Earth as his poor scaly head can hold.

Valon listens to the Master of Spells, his excitement growing with each word. A chance to go to the Plane of Earth? I knew Pathfinders got around, but I never expected this sort of opportunity! A grin on his face, he follows the rest of the group to the library.

His eagerness falters a bit as they reach the library and begin their research in earnest, however. Valon never was the most well-read man. Still, he dutifuly sets himself to the task at hand, trying to assist the others where he could.

Assist Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7 Hah, off to a great start.

The monk quickly proves to be somewhat less than helpful in this endeavor. He spends the first couple hours struggling to find relevant material, particularly in a language he can read. He frequently has to ask others if what he's found is at all useful, and finds himself unable to pay attention long enough to make sense of what he reads. By the end of the group's time researching, Valon is barely even trying to help anymore. It hasn't done much good anyway. He flits from section to section, flipping through books he finds more accessible and attempting to make conversation with other people in the library. He is shooed away more than once.

He listens to the others report on what they've found, looking a bit embarrassed that he has nothing to contribute. "No no, it's good someone learned something about where we're going." The man looks away and scratches his head. "Not like I was going to get much done in here. Never was my strength. If there's any more, please go on."

Malvic made ample use of his time in the Lodge's libraries. However his research did not provide anything substantial on the Plane of Earth. The libraries' rich archives on matters of the arcane and spell theory proved an ample distraction for Malvic.

The matters of the planes are not my specialty. he thought as he wrapped up his bundle of notes.

He returned to the group as Drukpa was sharing his information. Once Kondor started to brief the party he looked up in surprise before jotting down notes in one of his journals. "Brilliant. I did not expect...such breadth in your knowledge of the Plane of Earth. This will serve us well." he says in somewhat bitter gratitude.

Having taken note of the possible encounters he takes one last study of his spellbook to ensure he is ready for the challenges ahead. He wasn't entirely excited about dealing with brash mercenaries but even the smallest companies had some sort of spellcaster.

Sorrina raises a chiseled eyebrow quizzically to Drukpa's questions. "You don't think this is a glorious assignment? I'll grant, you are not fighting off wave after wave of demons, all the while struggling to destroy their portal before their even more horrific master comes through. But how many people you know can say they have set foot on another plane? Not many, and not enough Pathfinders. And besides, it's not as if all you will be doing is sharpening weapons. Further in your training, you will likely be doing more important and interesting things, and at the same time, paving the way for the Society."

"Not all - in fact, very few Pathfinders start out with the most 'heroic' tasks. One must work their way through the ranks and become stronger first." The oread pauses and looks to the crystal still in her hand. "As long as we are here, I should call Reyshal. Preparations are complete. We are ready."

These last six words cause the boulder opposite Sorrina Westyr’s seat to ripple like water. What appears to be a towering stone statue of a muscular man clad in gold-lacquered armor emerges from the stone. He bows dramatically to the Master of Spells. “Well met, Trail Seekers," he grins wryly as Sorrina frowns in irritation. “Of course, I mean Pathfinders. Just a jest between friends.” The shaitan steps forward and inclines his head in a shallow version of the bow he just performed for Sorrina. “I am Reyshal ik Jalman, humble servant of Her Radiance, Ashadieeyah bint Khalid, and sworn ally to the steadfast Master of Spells. Today I am honored to escort you to the Opaline Vault, the glorious home of my ancestors. I hope that together we can cement the bonds between our peoples, dear Pathfinders. When Reyshal arrives, he does his best to mimic his fellow agents, bowing deeply and speaking grandly, but it's hard to miss that he remains a country bumpkin who's already far out of his depth. Hearing Xukong refer to himself as a coin on its side leaves him scratching his scaly head in puzzlement, and he actually fishes out a copper and experiments with putting it on its side, glancing quizzically back and forth between the coin and his new friend.

"Well, gosh, um, I mean - Greetings, greetings, your lordship eminence, um, I hope you had a nice trip. From inside that boulder, I mean. How did you do that? I'd love to be able to do that too, gosh the kids back home would think that was something. I guess I'll have a few tales to tell when all's said n' done, I reckon. But anyway, prolly you got no need to lissen to ole Drukpa yammering on, and I do beg yer pardon on account I ain't got a lotta learnin, so I'll jes' say that me name's Drukpa Marpo, sure as Lord Apsu's the lord of the dragons, an' it's mighty grand to make the pleasure o' yer acquaintance and y'kin count on me."

Having finished this monologue - perhaps the longest speech he's ever made - Drukpa looks around for approval before sheepishly adding, "So, um, this Blame of Hearse where we're headin', well, to tell the truth, this is already the first time I've left me village, I don't suppose it's real far now is it? Anything I should know before we leave, on account o' I ain't gotta lot o' nollidge bout such things, but when I was wading through the books up in the libraree, I got the sense that it ain't quite like here, if I ain't too rong?"

Reyshal listens to everyone with a smile, seemingly quite interesting in all you have to say. Perhaps things are quite different on his plane. He chuckles at Drukpa's apparent bashfulness and answers his queries. "I did not come from the boulder, I merely opened a portal from my plane to yours in that spot. Just something shaitans are born with and taught to harness, really. I am sure there is a more complicated answer involving the specifics likely beyond me."

"As to how far away it is - well, you certainly know how to ask the tricky questions. To me, it is but a few steps and a bit of magic away. As it will be for you and your friends, since I will be taking you." The shaitan takes a moment to scratch his head, as if he had never really thought about it before. Never had to, likely. "In reality, though, no amount of walking or travel could take you from my plane to here or your village. Short of magical means, such as those of a talented mage or naturally gifted being like myself, this world and mine do not exist on the same canvas."

"But listen to me, rambling on - I have probably confused you, as I know I have confused myself. Perhaps Sorrina can better explain to the both of us after we see the mission through. Is everyone ready?" Reyshal extends his hand, and the boulder begins to ripple as it did during his entrance.

The half-elf nods, eyes shining with excitement and a little apprehension, This is much more than what I signed up for... leaving my home for another plane of existence. Listening to the Shaitan's attempts to explain metaphysical travel to Drukpa put in harsh light what they were about to embark on; I cannot come home without significant magical help... From what I can tell, hopefully this will be one of the last massive pieces of text, I broke it up as best I could.

"Then let us be off," Reyshal declares. He bows once again to Sorrina in farewell, then bids the group to join hands in a circle. The shaitan assumes a look of mild concentration, and, with a distinct feeling of vertigo and an unpleasant but not-quite-painful tugging sensation in your stomachs, you are off. The journey takes but a few seconds, and nothing can be seen but vague shadows of faraway places likely unknown to most mortals, yet it seems like so much more. When it is over, you find yourself in an entirely different world.

A spinning tunnel of shimmering crystals gives way to the inside of an immense geode, a cavern so vast that the walls and ceiling appear as a distant night sky. Multicolored twinkling lights hang in the air like stars, painting shifting auroras across the geode’s walls. At the heart of the city, radiant spires of gold and platinum emerge from a churning lake of liquefied gemstones, connected by soaring bridges. “Welcome to the Rainbow Metropolis,” Reyshal whispers.

After taking a few moments to answer any questions and grin knowingly at any awestruck looks, the shaitan beckons the team to follow. He leads along some of the less active trails and bridges. The walk takes perhaps an hour or two, made faster by Reyhsal excitedly pointing out landmarks. "That is the Peerless Embassy, which houses from all corners of the multiverse...and there is the Slab. Short, but over a mile long, it accommodates and trains most of the Sultana's shaitan army. I tried to get you in there, but of course they are very strict in their acceptance policy: Planar natives only, I'm afraid. That is another virtue of the Ungrounded, I suppose."

Finally, Reyshal's sightseeing tour ends up in the Outer District, comparatively shabby but equally crowded, and home to the Ungrounded. In addition to those of extraplanar organizations you likely do not recognize, many flags fly here from Material Plane companies, some of which you may. "When seeking the pashas' favor, most off-world businesses start here," your guide explains. "It is not as decadent and visually pleasing as our other locales, but it is a good place to gain a foothold on the plane." He stops outside of the Ungrounded barracks, a squat but tidy and uniform building, to allow you a good look around before your task begins.

The area discussed and mentally mapped, Reyshal stoops into the Ungrounded barracks, beckoning you to follow. He navigates swiftly through the tunnel-like, scantly-decorated halls to the captain's office. A heavy wooden door opens to reveal an immaculate office barely large enough to house the writing desk and bookshelf within. The unpainted stone walls are devoid of windows or decoration. A stern, middle-aged human woman with darkly tanned skin and close-cropped salt-and pepper hair sits in a rigid pose behind the desk as she studies an open ledger. She lifts her chin and glares at the open door.

"Captain Othis," the shaitan says, bowing in greeting and producing a paper-thin, intricately chiseled stone tablet that he hands to her. The Captain studies the text for a few minutes, pausing occasionally to frown at the assembled company. She then puts down the tablet and bows to Reyshal in a servile manner, saying she will take the Pathfinders under her wing and begin an accelerated training program.

Reyshal thanks her and takes his leave, providing you with directions to his estate for when your mission is complete. As soon as he exits, however, Othis takes up the tablet once more and crushes it with her bare hands, shattering it into dozens of pieces. "So, you think you have what it takes to be Ungrounded?” She bellows, circling the team combatively. “I’ll be the judge of that. You look softer than night soil to me. Your friends in high places won’t help you when you’re down in the trenches, or when there’s an efreeti scimitar at your throat. Now, get out of my sight. Your trials start tomorrow. Dinner is at six o’clock sharp. If you’re late, you can starve. Dell! Take this fresh meat to the grinder."

At that, the door bursts open again and a flinching oread, bids you follow him to your quarters with all speed. He introduces himself as Dell Darkblade, a fellow recruit, and stops outside of a wrecked-looking dormitory containing five bunks, none of which are made. "S-sorry about that," he says. "The Captain's pretty hard on all of us, you'll get used to that, if nothing else. Might want to clean up before dinner, too - she hates a mess." With that, he leaves for his own room.

There are only five beds, so one of you will have to sleep on a simple bunk or the floor unless you brought a bedroll. Xukong, now is a good time to do your ritual, which you've succeeded on. Unless anyone has any special preparations they want to make (Dell, Othis, and other people are currently too busy to talk), we'll proceed to dinner.

"Thank you Dell. I am Kondor Vy'Zanth. What can you tell us about the trials so that we can be prepared for tomorrow? Does Captain Othis oversee trials and training herself or are they supervised by drill sergeants?"

He pauses to allow Dell to respond, and will quickly follow up with a few more as he walks over to one of the bunks and starts cleaning and making it ready. As he converses will then move to the next bunk and do the same.

"Hhhm", he listens intently, "How are the Ungrounded organized? Do you know how many men and women are in this company?"

This is just small talk to get to know Dell better and learn about the Ungrounded. I am ready to move on to dinner if Dell has little info to provide. I do not have a bedroll, so Kondor would like a bunk.

Drukpa is not fussy about the unmade beds. He picks the nearest and sprawls out on it, leaving his gear lying about him. With a yawn, he observes, "Whew, that travelin' 'tween planes is weary work, I'll tell you that! I'll just take a little nap before dinner - someone wake me up when it's time for grub. I sure hope the food here isn't just a bunch of rocks and clumps of dirt and stuff..." "I'm not quite sure 'bout your trials, probably something basic," Dell mutters, following Kondor with most of his body still pointed towards the door, as if he was about to leave. "Various sergeants oversee the more experienced recruits. Captain Othis'll likely watch your trials, on account of how you're new and accelerated."

The oread pauses for a second at the next question, as if he had forgotten the company's hierarchy. "The Ungrounded have shaitan generals, they're rarely here. Given that, Othis is usually the commanding authority. We've got, I don't know, maybe 300 people overall, but most are deployed. Almost everyone here, about 100, is still in training. That or an overseeing officer. S'all I know, I'll see you at dinner. Take the Captain's advice, don't be late." With that, he makes a quick exit, muttering something about errands to run.

Not a lot to this part, just giving you time to react to what's happened and divvy up beds. So we'll probably move on before tomorrow.
