Looking in the direction of Bartimaeus, Grigor calls out, "The halfling's pack doesn't have a rope by any chance, does it? I don't think the Magus here is going to have a lot of luck climbing out of there without one."

"Dwarves don't jump," Durlo says. He sets his backpack on the cool cave floor and digs around until he produces hemp rope and his grappling hook. He sets the grappling hook at the lip of the hole and pulls the rope taught, then swings his girth over side, and, bracing against the wall, lowers himself down. Mordack says curiously Say, what is in these pits anyway, If we peak our heads over the pits, we might find something important. After all this is a confirmation, maybe part of the test is discovering things. I suggested crawling up to one, getting on your stomach crawling so you don't slip into the hole accidently and peeking your head over each one. Sigrid, you get behind me, so if something pulls me in, you can grab me by the legs as a reaction and pull me the other way. We are also not on a time limit I recall so we can spend five minutes doing this.

Mordack will get on his stomach as he gets near a hole crawling and peak his head over each and every hole there is, and he looks back to see if Sigrid is right behind him before he does. Sigrid, will you be behind Mordack for each hole to grab his legs just in case? I just want to check a few, at least like 6 or so.

The tunnels continue on, about thirty feet from the pit you guys find a long 10 foot plank of wood, it looks as though its been tread upon quite often, likely used to cross that old pit. The tunnels head deeper beneath the Kortos Mounts until they eventually open into a large cavern.

What must have once been beautifully carved reliefs and inscriptions have since weathered heavily, their features dulled and softened to the point that it is hard to distinguish what each once depicted. A wide tunnel exits the cavern on its far side, and blue-burning torches line the passageway’s walls.

You guys can use Kn: History, Religion to decipher these Bas Reliefs, its DC 15 to use Knowledge skills. or Appraise or Perception at DC 17

The Artist:
The Artist is depicted painting murals on the walls of impressive buildings, associated with Aroden having painted the city of Absalom with beautiful colors so that it might awe all who visited.

The Farmer:
The Farmer is depicted plowing four lines in a field, retelling Aroden’s prophecy that humankind would prepare the rocky earth for planting and over generations wear the pebbles down into fertile soil.

The Soldier:
The Soldier is depicted bearing a lantern through the streets of a city, following the dead god’s prophecy that the vigilant shall carry light to the darkest corners of the world to banish the shadows.

The Fisherman:
The Fisherman is depicted hauling in an enormous catch of small fish to take back to Absalom, illustrating Aroden’s declaration that a great host of creatures could accomplish a great task, whether that be taming the wilds or feeding a nation.

Continuing his examination, he speaks up. "I believe this is a rendering of The Artist, which is associated with the dead god Aroden. Although only the carving has survived now, I'm pretty certain this used to be pigments showing the colors of the murals of Absalom."

Taking 10 on religion. I have a trait that converts take 10 into take 11, which then also adds my ranks and class bonus. Inspiration adds an additional d6. I'm only doing the artist right now so that others can do their own investigations, but I can take 10 in order to get 19-24 religion checks on all of them if this is an area we just want to move on with. Don't want to kill others opportunities though if they want to spend time here.

Grigor and anyone else that identifies at least one relief:

You also identify that the sections of the holy text depicted are slightly different than those that appear in the known version of the History and Future of Humanity, suggesting that these might represent an earlier version of the work.

Even though Aroden disappeared or died over a century ago, these caves store a hint of his divine magic (like a wand with a single charge left) that can impart a minor blessing to those who perform a short series of rituals based on the parables.

I'll give some people some time to post before moving us forward onto the next part

Grigor examines and explains the other carvings. "Each of these seems to reflect aspects of Aroden." He points to specific carvings. See, here is the farmer, and that is the soldier, and the Fisherman. These do seem strange though. These depictions don't match what I've read in books on Aroden. Either whoever created these had a deep misunderstanding of the teachings of Aroden, or we have stumbled on to something new. It definitely merits further study by a team of experts."

Grigor is able to identify the rest of the reliefs, rubbings might be possible but they are rather large and it would require several sheets of paper per relief to get the total picture.

The soft light of the surrounding fungus mixes with the flickering glow of the nearby torches to reveal a grand chamber. A large pool of water along the chamber’s southern edge reflects the blue and green radiance to illuminate the massive stalactites that cling to the ceiling overhead.

Two other tunnels branch off from this area, leading to the east and west. Rising up from the pool is a column of rock with steeply sloped sides and a flat top, as if someone had sawn off the top of a massive stalagmite.

A miniature city carved from this same stone occupies nearly the entire surface. Tiny trinkets such as ancient coins, polished semiprecious stones, and ornately braided loops of string are scattered throughout the diorama, and pale cave frogs clamber atop it. The smooth cavern floor is covered in gravel and pebbles along the edge of the pool, and several foot-long centipedes prowl among the gravel in their search for prey.

Additionally a lone figure is sitting around the model city, in seemingly peaceful meditation.

This figure is most certainly a gillman

Mordack gives Grigor a good smile I was just thinking the same thing Grigor, put the souls to rest, I'm hoping a prayer or ritual of some kind will do it, cause I don't want to battle undead necessarily.

"I can assure you undead are not exciting, and that they should not be underestimated. Various forms of undead are responsible for a litany of tragedies in Ustalov, let along the rest of the world. Hopefully if these 'restless souls' involve undead, it is only lesser corporal undead. You certainly don't want to be hunting with that noisemaker if it is something more along the lines of a wraith or a ghost. And believe me, there are much worse than that, but this doesn't seem to be the right time or place for an advanced lesson on the topic."

Durlo nods grimly. "Then by your resolve, friends, the undead it is."

He draws his greatsword and starts moving toward the side cavern.

Heading off to handle the undead, you head down a narrow passageway. The cave’s damp air becomes increasingly stale you continue down through this tunnel, and as they approach this area, the stench of decay grows increasingly evident.

The passage turns to the east and opens into a small cavern littered with bits of broken glass, rotting pieces of paper, and other unusable detritus. The body of a male dhampir lies facedown toward the back of the cavern.

Undead: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Two Gillman zombies and what you can only imagine are two gillman skeletons lurk in the room and lurch to life as they smell your fresh living flesh!!!

Assuming that is plenty enough to ask for DR on both of the creature types. If not, I'll correct myself.

Grigor looks over the undead rising before them. Thank goodness they seemed to be lesser types of undead at least, not that any undead should be taken lightly. Examining them quickly, he tries to recall manuals he'd read on how to best combat such creatures. [b]"The ones longer dead with no flesh on their bones will be most vulnerable to clubbing weapons. There is nothing to cut, so smash them! The ones with flesh still on them should be more vulnerable to cutting blades."[/b}

Now the next problem. Glancing at his own equipment, neither his sword cane or his crossbow looked to be ideal for fighting these foes. Perhaps a crossbow bolt aimed right at the skull of one of the skeletons would connect with enough to not just deflect off to the side.

Fire a heavy crossbow at the 2nd skeleton, so it has cover but isn't in melee.

heavy crossbow, cover: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 2 - 4 = 14
damage: 1d10 ⇒ 4
