Venture-Captain Roderus sits at his desk in the lodge beneath the popular
Winding Road Inn in Katapesh. Maps cover every wall of his workspace,
and precarious stacks of journals and papers nearly reach to the ceiling.
The venture-captain glances up from his work. "Welcome, Pathfinders. I
hope your journey here was not too arduous. I have a fascinating assignment for you."

He plucks a single sheet of paper from the middle of pile on his desk.
"This is a letter from the Osiriani investigator Amenira, who works with the Temple of
the All-Seeing Eye. Mercy, the town she mentions in her reports,
wasn’t even on our map until now. It’s a small settlement out in the
Mana Wastes. Magic is unpredictable out in the Wastes, and it sometimes coalesces
into deadly storms. People in Alkenstar reported seeing one of these magical
disturbances heading in the direction of Mercy, but the town weathered the
fearsome storm without so much as a scratch."

The Temple of the All- Seeing Eye is the most prominent temple of Nethys, god of magic.

After six months in Mercy, the local
priests are still not totally cooperative.
I am still referred to as “the outsider”
and nominally kept under curfew, though
they’ve stopped caring when I break it, so
long as I keep to myself.

The rivalry between the carpenters and the
blacksmiths is intensifying, and I’ve noticed
restrained violence between the two groups.
I will investigate further.

The infiltration of the weaver’s home was
successful, though brief. I have not yet
obtained a sample of the ointment.

My illness has been growing steadily worse,
which has complicated my work, as it is
becoming increasingly difficult to hide.

Something shielded Mercy from another
mana storm a few days ago. The storm
should have razed the town, but it split
into two fronts that bypassed the town before
recombining. I strongly doubt that the priests
here have the power to evoke such a miracle. Is
there an artifact in or near Mercy?
Further inquiries are required.

He gives you some time to read the letter. When you finish and put the note
down, he venture-captain clears his throat. "One of my contacts at the
temple received this missive from her four months ago, and he hasn’t heard
anything from her since. I’m sending you to Mercy to figure out why. If she’s
still there, ask her why she hasn’t contacted anyone in months and help her
finish her investigation; if she isn’t, find out what happened to her. While
you are there, see how much of the mystery of Mercy you can unravel. Several
of the clergy within the temple are intensely curious about why the mana storm
didn’t level the town, and so am I. I will gladly provide you with additional
pay for the information that you retrieve. I’ve booked a ship to the city of
Alkenstar, which is a few days’ journey from Mercy itself. The ship departs in
three hours. If you have any questions, ask them now. You’ll have time to
purchase supplies when you arrive."

The Pathfinder is tall, in a gaunt, haunted way. His eyes are a little bulging and he sports oozing sores on his face and neck. His hair is thinner than it should be and prematurely grey, but his voice is clear. Clear, but creepy.

"I have heard the cries of the void, and they speak to me of the Wastes. They speak of magic gone wild and men with metal thunder. I am happy to look further into this madness." He nods, apparently happy with the doom he's chosen. "I am Jann Ulfenssen, and I speak to the emptiness between the stars."

I'd like to purchase a wand of Comprehend Languages, if I may, before we begin.

Thannaen stands at the back of the room, tall and austere, even for an elf. A journal and pen are already in his hands, both brown and leatherbound, much like most of his adventurer's clothing and equipment. The hilt of a great curving blade pokes above his high shoulder. Oddly, gold chasing is tarnished beyond all recognition and the wrapping so soiled that one could not guess at the original color. The rest disappears beneath a plain but clean scabbard.

"What do we know of Amenira? Do we know of what illness she speaks?"

"Well then, Smiley. The Mana Wastes are a dangerous place to be in, especially when you get away from civilization. The Geb and Nex War took place millennia ago, and their devastating effects can still be seen. Expect magic to be augmented there. Its effects may change or not work at all- it's unpredictable. Never mind the mutated creatures there, permanently transformed by its magic. Don't go wandering more than you need to."

The Venture Captain turns to Thannaen. "Amenira is a young but trustworthy companion. She follows the All-Seeing Eye of Nethys, and it draws her to various ruins, abandoned libraries and other areas of magical significance. I asked her about visiting Mercy in the Mana Wastes and she jumped at the call. She's been prompt with her updates up until recently."

1-23 (Thread|Slides)

The ship travels down the coast of the Obari Ocean, tacks northwest up the
Elemion River, then sails south down the Ustradi River, finally stopping at
the city of Alkenstar. It docks slightly short of a five-hundred-foot-tall
waterfall in the middle of the city, where southbound ships painstakingly
ride a winding elevator to the river above. Nearby, carriages wait to lead
passengers into the smog-covered city.

While in the town of Alkenstar, you may wish to ask the locals there about
the town of Mercy.

Knowledge(Local) or Diplomacy check

DC 15:
Mercy is located a little over 20 miles south of Alkenstar.
The people there worship an obscure nature deity. Rumors speak of a vampire
who occasionally hunts travelers along the road.

DC 20:
The people of Mercy have a reputation for being insular and
extremely devout to their god Robori. The town has rigid, inflexible rules,
but the quality of its harvests encourages traders to occasionally stop by
the town to purchase produce.

DC 25:
For the past year, an Osiriani woman from Mercy named Amenira
came to Alkenstar every month. She traded for supplies and sent large
collections of letters before returning to Mercy.

The Alkenstar entry lists two Pathfinder-friendly contacts, an alchemist by the name of Briarlad and a magistrate's assistant by the name of Nimialle. Thann pays a visit to both for information, but does not hear anything new beyond what Nithrandyl has discovered.

It's actually a bit difficult to tell what she is at first glance, as if she were some avante-garde artist's conceptual composite of various things a typical Human might call to mind when they think of "monster" - a little bit of orc, undead, dark arts practitioner, temptation demon, axe-murderer, and evil genius all in one.

Standing close to her, one hears an unnatural susurrus, like voices in varying levels of emotional intensity, from an indeterminable distance.

Knowledge (Geography) DC 13:
A prominent patch embossed on her backpack bears the national emblem of neighboring Geb, Kingdom of the Dead - and some living.

"Smiley, nice to see you still smiling. The rest of you, a pleasure. Khāṇa Tsogtsos, at your service...so let me service you: Vampires hunt, it's what they do, like we all do whatever it is we do, so I wouldn't worry about it - certainly not as much as I'd worry for the time being about the local Quick. They call their local god Robori, and if His flock are any indication, He's one of your "all work, no play, no tolerance for much of anything" sorts, like Erastil with a bit of an inferiority complex added in. I met a fellow Quick from down south, an itinerant merchant who told me that their harvests make this place worth visiting every year, and that they are the only thing that makes it worth visiting. So that's something. Anyways, word from Alkenstar is that our Amenira has been visiting there every month for the past year. She trades for supplies, sends LOTS of letters, then returns to Mercy."

The dirt road toward Mercy winds through rocky, tree-lined hills. Sporadic
clearings occur where large sections of trees have been destroyed or damaged.
Some are only missing a few branches, while others have been split almost in
half vertically or chopped down to a short stump. The exposed wood is black
and perfectly smooth. One such clearing reveals the opening of a narrow cave
in the hillside. The trail splits, leading both into the cave and off to the
north.

DC 15 Knowledge (nature):
The black sheen on the wood is burnt sap.

DC 15 Perception:
You notice that there should be far more debris in the area.

DC 11 Perception (This is a different check than the previous check):

As you travel through the winding path, you notice a strange creature nearby a
cave entrance. A gnoll, its right arm covered in tree branches, holds onto the
cuff of a hyena. It scowls at you and readies its bow. The hyena leaps ahead,
ready to fight.

"Could be the vampire," Thann replies over his shoulder. He pulls his long blade fully free from its scabbard; a thick stain of dirt and grime and rust cover nearly the full length of the steel. Only a small patch near the hilt shines true, as though it's been painstakingly scrubbed clean. A highly stylized elven script flows from this cleared portion and disappears into the muck further along the sword.

Back in time:

At Alkenstar the party made a rendezvous with their final member. They were said to meet a gnome who "they couldn't miss", and true enough, they immediately spot a gnome in eccentric yet somehow refined clothing.

"Well, well. You've arrived just according to schedule. I got the mission briefing in mail." He tips his exotic hat as a greeting.

"I am mister Rizzlefunk. You may call me mister Rizzlefunk," the gnome declares, redundantly. "I am a specialist in languages, a psychologist extraordinaire, and one very persuasive gentleman."

The hyena starts running downhill as the Gnoll emerges from cover to get a better shot downhill. Her right leg is covered in tree vines, hindering her movement.

Speed is key. The thought protrudes unasked into Thannaen's thoughts. As he has learned to do, he listens. The elven script on his sword flashes a bright white then darkens again, and suddenly the elf is racing far, far ahead.

Using one point of Mental Focus as a swift action to give myself an additional 30 feet to my base speed, then double moving the long way around the hyena to my present position. I don't provoke unless it has reach.

Smiley's bolt and Khāṇa's arrows don't get past the hyena's armor. She laughs and slaps the bolt off.

The Gnoll retaliates against Jann and fires another arrow.

The Gnoll snorts and curses as the arrow thuds into the dirt. Meanwhile, the hyena is briefly surprised by Thannaen's sudden speed but it turns around and bites.

Rizzlefunk delays, since none of his targets are in range.

The Hyena tries to bite Thannaen again.

Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 Ouch, I rolled max damage again.
Trip Attempt vs CMD: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Unfortunately it's too much for Thannaen to handle and he falls. The Hyena closes in on Nithrandyl.

Meanwhile the Gnoll continues her battle against Jann, and scores a second hit.

Rizzlefunk realizes Nithrandyl isn't really one for the frontlines, and walks up to him, tapping him on the shoulder. The elf suddenly feels a burst of speed and dexterity. "This should get you away from those hyena teeth!"

Compel Alacrity:
A dash of mental speed lets the subject push past her physical limits to avoid an enemy. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject begins her turn within an enemy's reach. The subject can move 10 feet as a free action without provoking attacks of opportunity. The distance the subject can move increases by 5 feet for every 5 levels the mesmerist possesses, to a maximum of 30 feet at 20th level. The subject can't move farther than her speed in this way. The movement from this trick doesn't count against the subject's movement speed for that round.
