When Ulena sees the obstacle course, she's so nervous that her companions will begin recklessly dismantling everything that she doesn't even notice the grease on the log as she starts the balance beam. Thankfully her natural elven grace and some of her arms training lend themselves to a successful jaunt over the beam, with little trouble at all.

Balance Rolls:
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Acro: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 2 - 4 = 12
Acro: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 2 - 4 = 16

Ulena then settles in for the bear crawl through the various sharp objects. She manages at first to avoid getting tangled in any wire and makes it almost halfway before becoming almost impossibly caught. She panics for a moment, but eventually regains her composure and manages, just barely, to remove herself from a snare of razor wire and she breathes a sigh of relief as she makes it to the end.

"Good job cadets. You're about halfway done."

Captain Othis watches you struggle with the obstacles, making progress in some and failing others. You seem to be almost halfway through the course, however. You barely catch your breath before she announces the next obstacle.

”The Climbing Wall. A straightforward climb up a wall with a few handholds. Just put one hand in after another until you reach the top. But NO MAGIC! NO ROPES! I want to see you climb this wall without assistance.”

It’s a 15 foot wall. Climb DC is 20 to move at one quarter speed. If you fail by 5 or more you fall from your height. No magic. Please make a Perception check as you approach the wall. A +2 bonus if you have stonecutting. Trapfinding bonuses apply. Who is going first?

DC 20 Perception:
Some of those rocks on this wall are very loose. So loose, in fact they will fall if you start climbing them without disabling them first. A Disable Device check DC 20 will stop them from falling. The trap is about 10 feet up the wall, too.

well this one is completely impossible for me to succeed. I would need to roll a 21 three times in a row to make it up without the use of magic or rope. Dc 20 is quite harsh for a group of level ones on a normally not main skill for anyone. I won't bother rolling.

Nigel looks ashamed as he approached the wall. I doubt there is anyway I can make it up this thing! Well I guess I'll be funny for the Captain to laugh at...

perception dc 20: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
wow what luck!

Nigel approaches the wall. He starts to look at the possible places to put his hands. wait, that one looks like someone left the rock loose. That one too! Even if I can get up that high, I would certainly fall on this death trap!

Nigel starts to climb up over and over again taking all 5 attempts at it but never making it more than 5 feet above the group. When he uses all his attempts he turns to the group and says I give up, I can't go over this thing. But just so you guys know, it looks traped. The rocks are rigged to give out. So careful. Sorry to let you guys down.

Nigel gets a worried look on his face as Reyshal's words come back to him. Umm, Captain? I noticed a second trap on this obstacle course now. I wanted to ask you, were these traps by disgn, or has someone been trying to sabotage us. If these were your disgn, then I will take it as part of the course, but I know of a group around here that doesn't like us. Aspis Consortium are not the pathfinders biggest fans. I just wanted to make sure no one is messing with your equipment without your knowledge.

do you guys think I made the right call asking the captain?

Johnny, a mess from being dragged through the glass and mud of the best crawl is indignant. "Captain! I get that your soldiers are the best. And I could probably climb this on a good day. But loose rocks? Really?"

"Well, I'm not going to be able to do this with my armor on." Ulena says with a frown. While the others get ready to move, Ulena removes her scale mail and lets it fall to the ground as she moves toward the climbing wall, hoping she hasn't just broken any rules.

She grabs at the first few handholds as she plans her ascent. She just barely makes it up to the halfway mark, knees weak, arms heavy but she presses on and makes it to the top. She throws her fist in the air triumphantly as she straddles the top of the wall, smiling down at the captain.

Climb: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 7.5 Feet up!

Tita begins scaling the wall, her hands gripping the rock face with ease. With her armor off and her clad in nothing but small hide and leather wrappings, the muscles flexing across her back are even more noticeable. "I see it, I see it!" Frankie jumps up and down. "It's like bread dough. Mom taught me you could sell more bread if you put salt rocks in the middle. Well, she said the rocks were full of salt but she'd never let me eat them."

Frankie grabs a bucket of soft earth, a toolbox (where did that come from?) and uses the earth to stabilize some of the rocks. "That was easy!" He debates whether he should climb it or not when Tita and Ulena scramble up the wall.

"And THAT is how you climb a wall!" Captain Othis gives a curious glance. "We're not done yet, so get down here and-" She turns to face Nigel. ”Sometimes even the most simple tasks have a cruel twist of fate, Nigel. Your keen eyesight spotted trouble, and you tried despite the risk. Remember that when a salamander comes from below, thirsting for your blood while your Oread friend is atop the cliff, trying to save your life.” The captain asks those atop the wall to lower some ropes so the other party members can climb up easily.

She finally points out the final obstacle. ”Sink or Swim, Pathfinders! Atop the wall is an abandoned rock quarry, now a muddy pit at least 15 feet deep. I want you to swim across. I am not merciful to my soldiers, but I am not a murderer. Some of the troops will be ready to drag you out if you start to drown. Now go, and I’ll meet you at the finish line.”

Your final task is to make 2 Swim checks, DC 10. If you fail by 5 or more you will go underwater and have to hold your breath.

Ulena and Tita have completed the entire obstacle course. You have earned one success!

”Alright, that’s enough celebration for now. Line up in a straight line.”

Captain Othis walks back and forth, observing each of you in the line. ”Listen up, roaches. You need more than strength and agility to succeed in battle. You need to know what you’re up against and how to fight it. Let’s see how stupid and unprepared you really are.”

”What’s the best way to deal with being set aflame? What do you do if a fire elemental lights you up, or a salamander breathes fire all over you?”
Make a Knowledge(Planes) or Profession(Soldier) check, DC 15.

If you make the DC 15 check:
Captain Othis fights off a smile. ”Impressive. But tell me, if a Shaitan is fighting a smaller foe, is its Stone Curse effective? Why or why not?”

Make another Knowledge(Planes) or Profession(Soldier) check. The DC is 18.

If you fail the DC 15 check:
Captain Othis grins. ”I guess that was too advanced for you, hmm? I’ll ask bit simpler question. Is the Plane of Earth mobile? Does it move through the multiverse, or is it fixed in location?”

Frankie opens one eye slightly to see what's going on, then opens the rest of them as he sees its Tita he nods. He quietly gets up and gathers his most important things, but leaves on his sleeping clothes, slipping out into the hallway when the coast is clear and quiet.

"If things go sideways I must be sleep walking and you came looking for me!" Frankie wanders off to explore the places they never got to see, including the Captain's supposedly empty office, right after the kitchen and some cake...

Sounds like Nigel will stay while Johnny, Frankie and Tita want to go. What about Ulena? If you do decide to sneak around, here are the options you can take. And yes,
this is written into the scenario.

Dell Darkblade told you Captain Othis’s stays in her office unless she is eating dinner or resting in her private quarters. And when she’s not in her office, the door is locked.

Will you look before dinner? Or after? Sounds like you're going afterwards.

Unlock the office door:
This requires a DC 20 Disable Device check.

Distract the Captain:
Make a DC 15 Bluff check to lure out the Captain from her office.

Ask for a spare key:
Make a DC 15 Bluff check to trick an officer into lending a spare office key.

Frankie and Johnny search the desk. Frankie just sees a pile of boring paper (did Tita say "comic books?"), while Johnny looks a bit closer. He finds a letter with a strange seal on it.

knowledge(local) DC 16:
This is the symbol of a Slagcrusher, an infamous leader of an army of bandits consisting of elementals and mephits. They steal gems and precious metals from caravans. In return he gives them a cut of the profits and protection.

Caravan Note:
Othis,
Thanks for tasty gem location. Friends picking up gems at pass. Stupid mercs won’t see it coming. Will help serpents sometime if gems good like you say. Question: why help Slagcrusher?

Johnny does not detect any magical essence in the room.

Tita looks around the bookshelf for some of less purient books. She finds a few books on the basics of poison, but nothing too raunchy. One of the books, Tactical Engagement, feels lighter than it should be. The book is hollowed out, and as Tita opens the book she finds a bronze badge bearing the image of a snake. She also finds this letter, inside:

Agent Missive:
Trusted Agent,

As always, the Pathfinders are sticking their meddlesome noses into our business. I received word that the damned Society’s interest in the Plane of Earth is more than just idle talk among the Decemvirate. Somehow one of their venture-captains forged an alliance on this plane and conned a shaitan into transporting some grunt agents to the Opaline Vault. Hilariously, these agents intend to join the Ungrounded. The Pathfinders cannot be allowed to gain a foothold here. I’m sure you can handle it.

Cauchemar

The letter bears an etching of three stony hands grasping a roughly spherical faceted gemstone. Each of the hands has three fingers. It's similar to the seal on the letter Johnny found.

What will you do with these letters? Will you keep searching? Where will you search? Give me Perception checks!

Are you keeping the Slagcrusher letter, Johnny?

Tita pockets the snake badge and the letter, as she wants to protect herself and her Pathfinders in case this all goes south.

Frankie searches the coats but doesn't find anything of interest.
Johnny looks at the scrolls on the desk but everything else looks normal. Correspondence with other officers, training reports, everything looks normal.

Tita, Frankie and Johnny return to their room. Suspicion runs high, but it will have to wait for later. Besides, the Captain came by for her routine inspection again.

It’s been a long week of training drills, scrubbing floors, and peeling potatoes. But finally, it’s time for your next major task. Captain Othis orders you to the training yard.

Just outside the mess hall, an oval of hard-packed dirt surrounds four columns made of black stone. Gray stone benches encircle the training ground, providing a clear view for nonexistent spectators. A raised balcony made of blue and purple crystal emerges from the stands. Dummies made of stuffed burlap sacks affixed to posts are scattered throughout the field, some wearing crudely painted smiles and posed in offensive gestures. Captain Othis stands in the crystal balcony, a mischievous grin on her usually stern face.

”Alright. It’s time for you to spar with another group of recent recruits. Spells, potions, and other combat-enhancers is forbidden. Both groups will not use lethal force or face the consequences.”

She leads you to a rack of blunted simple and martial weapons. ”These hit just as hard as normal weapons, you don’t need to check your swing.”

Anyone who uses these blunted weapons do not take a penalty for dealing nonlethal damage.

”Fight until they surrender or are knocked unconscious. Begin!” Captain Othis raises her hand, declaring the start of the fight.

Dell Darkblade and other recruits raise their weapons, feebly. ”B-b-best of luck to you.”

I've moved you onto slide 1. Feel free to rearrange yourselves.
