Robyyn, while still unsure about the expectations vis a vis his role here, is still intrigued by the military atmosphere, and enjoys the revelry offered. He may approach it from a more observational approach than strictly participatory, but he still enjoys himself.

Who doesn't like fitting in?

He does take it easy though, and make his way to bed sooner than later.

1-23 (Thread|Slides)

At the stroke of midnight, you hear someone hit a metal pot with a wooden ladle right outside the door to your room. ”This is Captain Othis! Open up and at attention!”

She steps right in as soon as you open the door, inspecting your beds. ”You can tell a lot from someone who can’t make their bed. If you can’t do such a simple task, how can I trust you to oil your armor, sharpen your sword, or lay your life to save the empire?”

She walks up to each bed and inspects it. "I see you Pathfinders have at least a modicum of respect. The first time Dell decided not to dress his bed I had him sleeping on the rock hard floor overnight."

”I shall return at 0600 hours to personally wake you up. Don’t waste my time.” She turns and leaves the room.

Day 1: 0600
As promised, six hours pass before you hear the same loud banging. ”Open up, you lazy Pathfinders! Darkblade needed ten minutes to open up on his first day; I had him peeling potatoes for a week!” You manage to get out of bed and open the door. ”Good. Make your beds and get dressed. There’s a new shipment of armor that needs to be dragged from market all the way to the armory. Guess who I volunteered to perform the delivery.”

For the next three and a half hours, you deliver equipment to the armory and food to the kitchen. Some tools need to be maintained, as well. It’s grueling work.

0930 hours. New recruits clean their room, the mess hall and other common areas. You’d swear Captain Othis chose the smallest brushes and smelliest soap she could find. It’s two more long hours, and the physical strain is getting to you.

Make a DC 10 Fort Save to avoid getting Fatigued.

Herman struggles from sleep and rubs his face as Captain Oth-a-whats-its speaks.

The morning goes quickly, like working in the stables but by the time they get to cleaning the common areas he has about had it. "Don't remember signing up for this. If I wanted to be in a militia I would have signed up, I am only giving this a little longer."

Much more yelling will probably push Herman past the limits of his patients.

Not a stranger to tedious, manual labor, Xabala manages to keep up her stamina through the first half of the morning's work. "I don't think any of us really knew what we were getting into, but this is only a temporary situation. Besides, many of these tasks are beneficial to the Ungrounded community as a whole!" she says, trying to cheer up her flagging companion. Erastil teaches self-sufficiency and that in order for a community to thrive, everyone must pull their weight. Training consumes resources that could be spent elsewhere, so in return we must put in our share of the work.

At 1130, Captain Othis stomps through the Mess Hall as you’re cleaning. Her muddy boots leave a trail across the floor. ”Lunchtime is in half an hour, cadets. I expect this room to be so clean I could eat off the floor. We start marching drills at 1230 hours.”

Durandal looks around, well-rested from the six hours of sleep as he surveys the Mess Hall with the tiny brush and pail of soapy water.

"We should ensure the task is finished." he says resolutely as he cleans the majority of the room in under 10 minutes, choosing the most pesky of areas, such as the ceiling, the corners and the creases by utilizing Prestidigitation. Most of the grime in the well-used canteen is easily cleaned as he gets to work scrubbing the floor.

"We could use magic entirely, but it would defeat the larger purpose." he adds as he cleans. "But, this can give you a moment of rest, Herman. Soldiers should look out for their comrades. I will shoulder your work for now."

You manage to keep up the pace with the other cadets, and the drill instructors note that the Pathfinders are doing well. Captain Othis watches you not with a stern glare but- was that a smile? No, can’t be. Only one of you needs to make the check, luckily.

1500 hours

Captain Othis escorts you directly to a rocky field just outside the city. ”This is our obstacle course. My old drill instructor would force me to do this solo, every day for a month. But you’re lucky- you only have to do it for a week.” A wicked smirk forms.

”You’re going to try to surpass each obstacle here.” She points at the various obstacles. ”If you don’t succeed the first time, try again. If you can’t make it after five tries, fine, I’ll let you skip it.”

You will have to try each obstacle with a skill check of some kind. If you fail twice, you can skip and move onto the next obstacle (although the Captain will berate you for wimping out.) If you fail 5 times you can skip the obstacle without later punishment. Some of the obstacles have a penalty for failure.

”Start with the balancing act here. A thin log is the only thing keeping you above a 10 foot pit.”

Balancing Act:

Step 1 Make a DC 15 Perception check to notice the log is covered in grease.
Step 2 Make 2 consecutive DC 12 Acrobatics checks to pass (DC 10 if you made the perception check.)

  • If you fail either Acrobatics check, make a DC 12 Reflex save or fall into the pit, taking 1d6 points of damage.
  • If you fall, a DC 15 Acrobatics check will let you land on your feet and avoid damage altogether.

Step 3 If you fell, return to step 2 and try again. If you fall 5 times, move on to the next obstacle.

”After that it’s time for a bear crawl through razor sharp wire, jagged bricks and broken glass. If you think this is tough, just compare it to a bloodthirsty efreet, breathing flame right into your face! I spat right back at him and cut him down with my longsword!”

Bear Crawl:
I need two DC 12 Escape Artist checks. They don’t need to be consecutive.

There are more obstacles after this. I'll track your progress on slide 1.

Balancing Act, Perception DC 15: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Robyyn approaches the log, taking no greater precaution than he would normally. He doesn't notice the grease.

Balancing Act, Attempt 1:

Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Reflex DC 12: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

He immediately slips on the greased log, but is able to catch himself. He tries to proceed further.

Balancing Act, Attempt 2:

Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Reflex DC 12: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

He begins making progress across, but about halfway he loses his footing again. However, he simply floats down into the mud gently, landing softly and walking out.
Feather Fall at will from Flight hex

He gives Captain Oat-face a glare as he returns to the beginning for another attempt.

Balancing Act, Attempt 3:

Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Reflex DC 12: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

This next attempt, he's almost able to get across, but slips at the last minute, though he catches himself before he falls. He returns to the beginning for another attempt.

Balancing Act, Attempt 4:

Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Reflex DC 12: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

Another early slip almost drops Robyyn from the log again, but his reflexes again prove adequate. He returns to the beginning one last time, his vitriol towards the Captain growing every stronger.

Balancing Act, Attempt 5:

Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Acrobatics DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

This last attempt proves a success, and he carefully steps down from the far end of the log. No, don't look proud of yourself fool; you're better than this dance and prance operation they have going. He glares again at the captain before moving on to the Bear Crawl.

Bear Crawl:

Escape Artist DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Escape Artist DC 12: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

His humiliation at having to try so many times to cross the greased log has firmed his resolve, and Robyyn emerges at the far end of the bear crawl safe and unharmed.

Acrobatics, Ruby: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

"No problem!" Xabala responds to the order. She quickly notices the grease on the log. Dead center the whole way. Just like running along the branches of a tree after the monkeys have swarmed through... Backing up, Xabala heads over the log at a brisk jog, carefully placing her feet as close to the center of the log as she can. After a couple of strides, she has made it and throws herself to the ground before the razorwire. "Keep it up everyone!"

With an unnatural grace, she manages to quickly worm her way right through the obstacle. The Mwangi Expanse has prepared me well, I've done this all before. "You're about halfway done. Well, some of you, anyway." She acknowledges Herman and Gill's hesitation.

Gill can catch up with the rolls, but onto the next death trap obstacle!

Captain Othis watches you struggle with the obstacles, making progress in some and failing others. You seem to be almost halfway through the course, however. You barely catch your breath before she announces the next obstacle.

”The Climbing Wall. A straightforward climb up a wall with a few handholds. Just put one hand in after another until you reach the top. But NO MAGIC! NO ROPES! I want to see you climb this wall without assistance.”

It’s a 15 foot wall. Climb DC is 20 to move at one quarter speed. If you fail by 5 or more you fall from your height. No magic. Please make a Perception check as you approach the wall. A +2 bonus if you have stonecutting. Trapfinding bonuses apply. Who is going first?

DC 20 Perception:
Some of those rocks on this wall are very loose. So loose, in fact they will fall if you start climbing them without disabling them first. A Disable Device check DC 20 will stop them from falling. The trap is about 10 feet up the wall, too.

Robyyn approaches the wall, but gets a sense of danger from Ayrii, focused on a point a little more than halfway up the wall.

"If you want to assess our ability to climb, assess that." Robyyn stares hard at the overbearing captain. "But there is something wrong with this wall. I can only assume that part of this obstacle is also looking at our ability to recognize that as well."

He makes no attempt to start climbing.

"Yes ma'am!" Taking a quick glance at the wall, Xabala sees nothing out of the ordinary and begins following her orders. Robyyn and Herman are nobody's fool; they are worried about the rocks. Damien's halfling luck kicks in and convinces him to stay down. Gill quickly scrambles up the wall, like it's a tree in his home village while Xabala and Durandal struggle to get their footing. Good thing for all of them, as once of the rocks loosens and several rocks fall from the top of the wall near Gili!

Even as some of the rocks batter Gili, he maintains his grip and scrambles up the wall.

Captain Othis almost claps before retaining her stone-faced composure.
”Sometimes even the most simple tasks have a cruel twist of fate. A Fire Genie will not hesitate to throw rocks down upon you as you approach his lair.” Watching Xabala and Durandal catch up, she nods. "And when danger like that comes, you don't get to take a break. Drop the ropes atop the wall so we can finish this."

She finally points out the final obstacle. ”Sink or Swim, Pathfinders! Atop the wall is an abandoned rock quarry, now a muddy pit at least 15 feet deep. I want you to swim across. I am not merciful to my soldiers, but I am not a murderer. Some of the troops will be ready to drag you out if you start to drown. Now go, and I’ll meet you at the finish line.”

Your final task is to make 2 Swim checks, DC 10. If you fail by 5 or more you will go underwater and have to hold your breath.

Robyyn happily climbs the rope, pleased that his instinct to hold back appears to have been met with approval. Hmmm... maybe this Captain has more sense than I thought?

He takes a look at the muddy pit that he has to swim across. "No sense in you getting all mucky, too, Ayrii. Fly ahead," he says as he sends the bat over to the end of the course ahead of him. He then steps into the water and begins his attempt to swim across.

You have earned one success for completing the obstacle course!
”Alright, that’s enough celebration for now. Line up in a straight line.”

Captain Othis walks back and forth, observing each of you in the line. ”Listen up, roaches. You need more than strength and agility to succeed in battle. You need to know what you’re up against and how to fight it. Let’s see how stupid and unprepared you really are.”
