Darven and Grog have 4 damage left. I'll assume your look behind the door.

Erastil is quite satisfied with the hunt, however and the party mostly recovers from injury. Darven leads the party through the door.

Two desks facing each other occupy the center of this room; each covered with stacks of reports, maps, and other pieces of paperwork. A large map of Nirmathas hangs from the north wall.

With 1d6 ⇒ 5 minutes of investigation, you realize there is enough information to implicate Zurnzal in the theft of Guaril Karela’s goods, as well as in the rumor campaign against the Pathfinder Society in Tamran. You also find a collection of blood-soaked letters written by Guaril Karela, most likely used to forge his handwritting.

Searching the desks, you find some more letters detailing the plan to sully the Pathfinder’s name.

Drafted letter to Captain Vaylorne:

Captain Vaylorne,
After our conversation last week, I’ve come up with a plan that will allow both of us to get what we want. I will get rid of the Pathfinders who are making themselves inconvenient to both the Aspis Consortium and to the church of Razmir and make you a political and religious hero.

First, you send me a list of secrets that would be damaging if they made it into Molthune’s hands, while I make the substantial gold piece donation to the church of Razmir that we discussed. After that, I will have a several people walk around town spreading rumors that Pathfinders are working with Molthune.

With that in place, I’ll contact the people I have set up in Molthune, and have them come down off of the blockade in the middle of the night. I’ll send some of my friends disguised as Pathfinders and carrying the military secrets to meet them. Each of them will be wearing a wayfinder and a glyph of the open road. I’ll dress up one of my halfling friends as their local leader, Venture Captain Oraiah Tolal. At that point, you swoop in with a large group of soldiers, kill the Molthuni, and capture the “Pathfinders”. I’ll tell them all to surrender right away, and you can arrest them. At some point when you are not on duty, I’ll break them out so there is more to blame on the Pathfinder Society.

Regards, Zurnzal

Notes attached to the draft:

Zurnzal,

Your plan shows promise, but it relies too heavily on theatrics over substance. An entire
group openly carrying wayfinders and wearing the Pathfinder’s symbol is suspicious in and of itself—real Pathfinders rarely try so hard to proclaim their allegiance—to say nothing of the considerable risk of discovery that you incur when disguising someone as a known figure in the community. The Molthuni are unlikely to agree to come off of the ships, even at night, without significant persuasion. Are you intending to have me assist their journey? What are you planning to do with the real Oraiah Tolal?

As a general point of discourse—when referring to activities that some may consider illegal, do not use plain language (particularly when you are signing your name to the document). You impressed me greatly on your last mission involving the Society, and I am certain you are capable of ironing out the details in this mission. Send me your next draft for revision.

Your Friend, MG

Letter to Zurnzal:

Dear Z,
I have received your donation. Blessed are those who open their coffers and their hearts to the
Living God. Those who are sufficiently generous succeed in all of their endeavors.
The information you requested will arrive tomorrow morning in a separate letter. I’ll alter the patrols to meet your group at the designated time. I can’t guarantee that none of my guards will be overzealous at the sight of Molthuni, so be sure that your group is quick to surrender and drop arms.

Zurnzal left his name on the letter. Idiot. But who is this MG?

And that's the base. I'll be out for a few days, depending on my internet connection. I'll fast forward a bit so you have something significant:

”Good job, all of you.” Guaril Karela kicks Cetenna for good measure. ”I found a little thief, and she’s going to talk, talk, talk to me all day. But for now, the shipments will flow to the Ashfall Lodge, Tamran and anyone else who wants to pay what I’m owed.” He grins. ”So, did you find anything else out these thieves?”

Woohoo! My hotel has good internet.

The smug face melts away into grim determination as soon as you show the letters. ”MG… I’d recognize that snake’s signature anywhere.” He turns to Cetenna. ”Madreki and I have a very… personal relationship.”

He looks at you. ”I am in the best position to track down Madreki and Zurnzal, but I’ll have to be quick and discreet about it.” You can already see him formulating a plan, deep in thought. His attention snaps back to you. ”I will exonerate the Pathfinders from any wrong doing immediately, but I want to keep these letters for a few more days. Do not give them to the Ashfall Lodge, give them to me- I need to keep this information close to the chest, and Tolal will tell everyone within earshot- she loves to tell stories.”

What will you do, Pathfinders? These letters reveal militia captain Jana Vaylorne’s ties to the Church of Razmir and the Aspis Consortium. Do you give it to Guaril, or give it to the Venture-Captain Tolal?

What of the militia captain and her ties to the Aspis? Providing this critical information to VC Tolal seems prudent. Certainly you would not object to righting that wrong?

Lasaraleen would vote for Tolal also but still wants to hear his response .

"The Church of Razmiri will of course be exposed. Eventually." He smiles. "But for now I'd rather blackmail the captain into revealing more secrets about the church. You have to think about the long game..."

2 for Tolal, 0 for Guaril

I've played this before and have no stake in either outcome so Liminy will abstain.

Amelie thinks long and hard about the choice "Hmmm, I feel like we should probably just turn them into Tolal, since she gave us this mission. But you're a Pathfinder leader too, and finding out more about those that are spreading bad words against us could help. Oh, I don't know, I hate choices like this! I'm so bad at decisions! Fine, you can have them!"

Even though I've played this before, I feel like Amelie is overly trusting and takes things at face value, and would be easily persuaded to hand to to Guaril

While I have no love for those dreadful Razmiri, I am not fond of the term 'blackmail' either. Nevertheless, in my current state I am not sure if I will get much guidance from Sarenrae on the matter.

So is that 3 Tolal, 1 Guaril, 1 abstain?

Gadget looks at the party and Guaril nervously and mutters, "Yeah... I think we should bring it back to Tolal." Her vote doesn't matter as much, but in-character she would think Guaril is being kind of shady.

Tolal it is.

”Are you certain?” Guaril sees your mind is made up. ”This will...complicate things, but I respect your decision. Let us return to the Lodge.” Guaril has put up an emotionless poker face and now he’s all business. He brings you straight back to the Ashfall Lodge and leaves without another word.

”This-this is incredible! This is what we need!” Tolal is overjoyed and begins hugging all of you before regaining her composure. ”Aspis and Razmir- a match made in the Abyss. It’s all their fault!”

The next few days you get to see Tolal fired up as she rallies Tamran. The people are hesitant but after reading the letters they realize the Pathfinders aren’t to blame, it’s the Aspis Consortium and the Church of Razmir who are responsible. Some are surprised Molthune isn’t to blame.

Disgraced and exposed as a traitor to the False God, Captain Vaylorne was last seen fleeing from town. It’s not clear where she would go, as Razmir does not tolerate failure, and Zurnzal will certainly be angry about her weakness disrupting their plans. Maybe she was better off in prison...

Thanks for playing!

Stealing this idea from another GM.

The scenario is now over. While I prepare the chronicles, tell me what your character is doing, now that the thefts have been stopped and you have cleared the Pathfinder’s name.

  • Going to explore the forts?
  • Looking for more thieves and evildoers?
  • Party time in Tamran?
  • Something else the GM hasn’t thought of yet?

  • Scarab Sages

Gadget will enact her day job! She will head around town trying to be helpful to people around town by suggesting how to strengthen their building's foundation or give other structural engineering advice. While doing so, she makes sure to let people know that the Pathfinders are there to help out!

Lasaraleen would help heal sick and injured people in town, now that medications are available. She hopes this helps redeem her with Sarenrae. Rooting out evil would be a plus if time allows. :)

Liminy finds the 2 bards we met earlier, gets drunk, and shares with them the story of how he helped save time itself.
