"I don't mind. I would wash it in running water first, if I were you. It takes away the evil within."

Gobbo!

Moving back to the main chamber, Ausk and several other members of the group take some time to give the area a detailed search. Dozens of tomes and books on varied subjects line the crude bookshelves in the main room, most of them dealing with darker arts and practices. There are a few tomes of regional lore as well as one that deals specifically with the history and lore surrounding the Age of Darkness. Scrolls and notes also litter the area, but most seem to be written in a language or cipher that does not seem familiar to anyone in the group. Several of the scrolls detail anatomical research and the pictures alone give you the sense that whoever penned them was experimenting with combining the living and the dead into a singular being.

As mentioned earlier, the tables and some shelves also hold alchemical ingredients and components. All told you could sell the lot for roughly 2000 gp if you had the means to transport it all to the city. Figure there is roughly 300 lbs of fragile goods that would need to be transported.

The books would be worth anywhere from 500 gp and up if sold as a collection, and could likely be transported by splitting them between the party members.

Taking the time to search through the rest of the earthen caverns, you find only dead ends and twisting tunnels. There is however a small room at the end of one of the tunnels that likely served as a sleeping chamber for someone here. It is devoid of any clues or valuables however.

A complete search of the area yields no sign of the second missing centaur whatsoever.

I agree Mistress Bashment. No being should suffer due to our inaction. I will go down the hole... and unless someone stops him, Ausk tries to find a rope with which to descend the hole.

Elxurian smiles. It was always easy to make selfish decisions than to worry about the group, as she had been doing. But of course she wanted to see what's down that hole. "I'm right behind you."

She secures her Hemp Rope with some pitons so they could climb down there and see whatever was lurking.

The room is on top of those stairs? Did we already went back the other way? (we turned left to get here) I'm starting to think we have more options than the hole, for now.

"The hole it is then," Jonas agrees with a shrug as he gets ready to follow the warpriest and the paladin down after checking that his bow is securely slung across his back and the daggers remain firmly within their wrist sheaths. It simply will not do if weapons start falling down and making noise while he is climbing down a rope.

"Ooookaaaaay. If you really want to head down the dark hole before resting, I'll go along." She adjusts her shiny new armor after cleaning it off and strapping it on.

Gobbo!

You should be able to move your tokens around the upper level to explore how it is laid out. You basically can explore the rest of that area without any encounters.

Fastening a rope to one of her spikes, Elxurian and the others head down the rough stairs, deep into the darkness below. It doesn't take long to come to the end of the rope, but the worked stairs themselves appear safe enough to traverse without its security. The steep decent seems to go on forever, and the air grows warmer as the group continues down. Before too long the oppressive weight of millions of tons of stone begins to creep into the consciousness of each of you, and there is almost a tangible sense of slowly suffocating under the pressure of so much rock and earth.

After nearly 30 minutes of slowing making your way down the shaft, the passage ends rather abruptly in a perfectly smooth stone wall. A close examination reveals to secret levers or means of moving the blockage, and tapping on it shows that it is completely solid and thick beyond your ability to measure.

Kn.arcana: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 Does this wall seem to be of magical construction or just engineered? EDIT: Waste of a 20...

There was definitely magic used to create or modify the stone, it is not at all natural.

"My best guess would be by trial." Elxurian is not overly happy to be down here, specially with so many weakened people, but nevertheless they needed to solve this problem, and for that they had energy enough. She draws her weapon and stands at the door. "Whenever you want."

"By all means then," Jonas agrees with a nod, his bow already in his hands and aimed at the door.

Gobbo!

Ugh, guys, I goofed. I was reading through the updates and was like, "what levers?". I had a typo in my post that I didn't catch. It should read "A close examination reveals no secret levers or means of moving the blockage, and tapping on it shows that it is completely solid and thick beyond your ability to measure." I put a "to" where "no" should be. :/

GM spoiler, this is going to be an impassible point at this time, but is worth remembering :) So don't get too hung up on bypassing the stone at the moment.

"Makes you wonder where will it lead..." She seemed satisfied, tough. "At least we know what is down here. If perhaps our contractor knows about this we can come back later. Now let's take everything we can to buy healing resources and be gone."

Elxurian wants to get everything they can carry, books glassware and whatever and go back to the centaur, after perhaps taking a closer look at the people in the woods. Of course that can wait until they've rested. Any objections?

The group packs up what valuables they can manage, leaving the rest to a future trip or other scavengers, whichever might come first. A bit saddened by the fact that no sign of the second centaur was found, they leave the earthen caverns and welcome the warm wind on their faces as they see the sun just beginning to slink down below the horizon. Night will be falling soon, but retracing the previous path to the centaur encampment shouldn't prove to be too much of a challenge.

Need two DC 12 Survival checks. Don't matter who makes them, as long as those attempting make two rolls.

Also need to know if you all are doing anything to maintain a bit of stealth or are you just bursting through the brambles in as straight of a line as possible back to the camp. Remember you are in "hostile" territory and it is going to be dark before you make it back.

She scratches her head in confusion. "Ausk, on the way to this place we saw the signs of a nearby camp, but we didn't make actual contact, deciding to follow the centaur's trail. Do you know those people? Something is bothering me. This close to that hideout, and in the middle of two centaur's tribes.... This smells like evil."

"We could check it out now," Jonas offers. "Perhaps one or two of us could approach silently and scout it out a little better."

Resting like one mile away from their camp? Then come back in the morning to scout?? Or would you like to scout now? I'm terrible at it, so go ahead if you want guys....

Penka spends a few minutes dismissing and then re-summoning Tree, this time in Tree-form again. Then she readies to bed down for the night, putting tree on one of the watches.

Gobbo!

Ok, sleeping in the centaur infested forest, got it! :)

The party does their best to find the path, and based on Ausk's observations they are headed the right direction. However, as night begins to fall they decide it best to camp and perhaps examine the area a bit more closely the next morning. The group quickly makes camp and most of the members are fast asleep in no time, the combat and struggles of the day wearing on their weary bones.

Amazingly enough, night passes without event, and as the sun begins to peek over the horizon the last member on watch sets about to waking the rest of the group.

No one died or was carried off in the middle of the night, so that's a good sign right?...

Next moves? Plan?

Penka, the summoned ally will last for 2 minutes correct? What are you hoping to accomplish in that period of time? Just trying to set expectations.

We are in a bit of a freeform mode right now, since I'm trying to get an idea of what you all are attempting to do. Please make sure to be clear about your objectives and it will give me something to roll with and develop. :)

I figured that once we got close to the camp (like within 2 move actions of it), I'd summon the leshy as a bodyguard incase things got dicey. Tree is not stealthy, so he's a bad choice of bodyguard in this situation. It's not terribly likely that we will get into battle, but at least I'd have something there to help out. Plus I haven't gotten to use Summon Plant Ally yet (a feat I also wrote, LOL), so I just wanted to do that. :-D

So, Jonas and Penka go together, rolling Stealth and Perception as needed or when they are close enough. And Penka stands ready to summon if things so badly. Though I rather hope they will not. Also, keep in mind Jonas has message as a spell-like ability.

Leaving the others behind, the more stealthy members of the party backtrack to where the signs of tracks were seen upon their arrival into the area and follow them as quickly and quietly as possible. Within an hour the tracks become more prevalent and a short time later they find themselves under the shade of a copse of trees, looking out across a clearing where an established encampment can be seen. Unlike the one encountered previously with Nashota and her tribe, this one seems far more permanent. Wooden palisades mark the perimeter of the camp and although there are no true towers, several ramps along the inside of the walls can be seen, which like serve a similar purpose. Where Nashota's tribe lived in tents and shelters of hide and sinew, the buildings within this encampment are wood and stone, with well thatched roofing. Over a dozen centaur can be seen milling about the area, with many more likely inside and out of sight.

So far you all are undetected, despite Jonas being a little less stealthy in a non-urban environment.

Are these Centaur friend or foe? Ausk asks

Gobbo!

Although Ausk wasn't with the party when they encountered Nashota's tribe, he would know that several tribes of centaur inhabit the Isle of Kortos, and that historically they have been rather peaceful, only attacking when provoked. Recent troubles with the centaurs have led to escalated tension between them and the city's residents, but that appears to have been resolved for the most part.
