Charlotte DeGivre |
(PMed you, Scott)
Having some background to your character is a common expectation of play-by-post here on Paizo. A background isn't 100% proof, certainly, but it does go a long way, and it gives your fellow players an idea of your writing style and playstyle, which goes a long way, especially when you're joining a game that's already underway.
Also, for the record, instead of posting three times like that, it's better to edit your posts into a single one. (You can edit a post you've made if it's less an an hour old.)
As for your background: Your grammar could use a little tightening up, but I like his origin story. An escaped slave on a quest for freedom, I like it.
If I may make a suggestion: I'm quite curious to know how he came to have the nickname "Scoundrel". That sounds like a fun story to be told in your background, if you'd care to tell it.
Scoundrel the Tiefling |
Scoundrel is his free name, Voren was his slave name is one way to think of it. In 4th ed, Tieflings would sometimes have names that go with concepts and such. I am continuing with that naming convention for Tieflings I play because I really liked that idea and it gives Tieflings some interesting names. I had a Tiefling Paladin NPC named "Penitent". I never got to use him but the name was very good for a Tiefling Paly with a need to redeem himself for his races past evils.
Variziel |
I'm fine for allowing Scoundrel/Scott aboard. Like Charlotte, I think a good backstory is very useful--not only does it hash out some basic character information and motivation, it also gives you a chance to display your creative talents and writing ability, as well as giving the GM extra plot points to use as they wish.
Of course, I'm a big writing person, majoring in Creative Writing at college right now, so I may be biased (just look at some of my backgrounds to see that...), but I think it holds true for most people. Play-by-Post especially benefits from creative thinkers who can write well and a lot.
Ignatius Hank |
Inquisitor for the pirate queen. :P Who's been treated like a slave on this ship. He's already managed to get himself out of that and into a much better place, so I think that as long as you don't get super high and mighty with him...there's not gonna be problems.
Charlotte DeGivre |
You do not diss the Black Queen Besmara! She's one of the deities of the Pathfinder setting.
Besmara. Get to date on your sea lore, landlubber!
Also, trying too hard to be badass? We're the PCs. "Badass" is part of the job definition.
Scoundrel the Tiefling |
You're not a badass yet. You're lvl 1. ;-) When ALL the PCs swagger around, doesnt that get old to you? I'm going to play it much more down to earth with my PC I think unless someone really gets in his face, ect. Go ahead draw all the badguys attention. Makes it far easier for a rogue to do his job. lol
Ignatius Hank |
Eh, Iggy isn't attempting to be a badass. He's simply maneuvering and using Golarion's lore to his adventure. ;) I mean, being marked by a deity (especially the one FOR pirates)...yeah...nobody wants to really kill someone like that, no matter how evil you are.
Besides, acting tough gets him into fun positions, a la the situation with Magpie.
Charlotte DeGivre |
I play humble in some of my other campaigns. This is not one of them.
The cap'n set up this campaign as intentionally high powered, and Charlotte is a swaggery dame by nature, so I'm more bombastic about it.
Besides, you're not expecting a lady with 20 charisma to just kind of flop about meekly, now are you? If you want respect on a pirate ship, you have to earn it, and that's what she's doing.

20 charisma doesnt stop a sword to the face from a higher level enemy. Can't diplomacy and intimdate your way out of everything, just like you cant kill everything always.

Essentially, it's not so much what it does. It's more what it symbolizes. Like with most of the deities, if you have a birthmark that can be tied to that deity...well, it makes you a target; it makes you respected/loved/feared/whatever is the most appropriate emotion.
It's like a perpetual calling card. He can't hide who he is, so he might as well accept it and what is essentially part of his destiny. That's why Iggy does whatever needs to be done to meet the goal(s).
And if there's one thing I've learned about games set in the Shackles, it's often an equal mix of what you can do IN combat and what you can do out. If they think it's a bad idea to get into combat with you, they won't get into combat (even if they are actually the more dangerous in combat).
;) The Shackles is a place of mind games. Just ask our friendly sawbones.
Ignatius Hank |
Well, yes, he is an SOB, but he's also VERY smart. He hasn't once been in combat, and he's efficient at what he does. Iggy doesn't much like his beliefs, but he respects what Janus can do.
Most of the NPCs think Iggy is a scary SOB who likely WILL hurt people if he's made mad. I mean, he got the Magpie to tell him where the stolen items were found, when torture didn't loosen his tongue. That's power you can't buy. ;)
Charlotte DeGivre |
BTW is she just really strong willed or is she somewhat beautiful too? Her description she sounds kinda plain or just cute/pretty vs "super hottie".
Charlotte has the appearance to match her charisma, but she also looks just a little strange. Her witch heritage gives her an otherworldly look, being quite pale and having one purple eye and one green eye.
She's small and lithe, which may or may not be attractive, depending on a man's taste, but there's no denying that she attracts some measure of attention.
She is, in a way, the charm of the unknown and the mysterious; the object of curiosity that draws the eye by being just odd enough.
Also, you're right. 20 charisma doesn't stop a sword to the face. Cause Fear does. Having companions to protect oneself does... Nice sharp nails and/or a boarding pike also goes a long way.
Variziel |
Scoundrel, I think you're a little too worried about what we can't do at the moment. I don't think any of us are necessarily swaggering around the ship acting like the biggest badasses around--if we were, we'd probably have done something about Plugg, Scourge, and/or Harrigan by now. We're mostly just talking with other low-ranking NPCs, finding out what the situations aboard the ship are like. Of course, several of us have sideplots going on at this point...
Janus is indeed a strange one, but he has Variziel's respect and assistance after patching him up. That doesn't mean they're best buddies or that Variziel totally agrees with his worldview, but it's something.
As far as combat versus social interaction goes, I agree with Iggy that it's important to be competent at both, or at least know what you're doing with one. Pirates, superstitious beings that they are, are probably less likely to attack someone who's obviously favored by their patron goddess. It helps that Iggy can probably defend himself reasonably. On the other hand, I think most folks on board probably aren't too frightened of Variziel, even if he's descended from a feared Free Captain, but we'll see what happens once he gets in a fight with his sword.
And Oracles are kind of similar to other divine casters--they help with buffing and healing, with some debuffs on the side. Not much damage dealing, but that's not their job.
Charlotte DeGivre |
Cause Fear wont work on a higher level enemy though will it? It also doesnt work on constructs or undead.
By the time we face higher level enemies, I'll have traded Cause Fear for other, more useful tools.
Like Variziel said, an Oracle's role is primarily a buffer and healer, though they can bring out a pretty solid debuffing side.
Charlotte is not a blasting caster, neither is she a damage dealer. She's a support caster, meaning her role is to make you guy's job easier. I have no doubt that she'll be great at this.
She also bring a lot of utility out of combat, especially considering how seafaring this campaign is promising to be.
But yeah, this build is pretty weak at levels one and two, I will concede that. Them's the breaks.

Hey everybody! Princey had to have some tests done and has been busy with that stuff the last few days. He was looking up a listing of endocrinologists earlier. He says he will be back later today! ^_^
Cydrius, I will be back later as well. I've been in hicktastic Lafeyette, so Internet has been almost zip!
Cap'n Jackson Sparrowshank Esq. |
"Ye have no idea who yer dealin' with do ye, ye sea urchin-humpin' bilge rats? The name be Cap'n Jackson Sparrowshanks, Esquire if ye please! After eating some land-gull chicken and checkered potatos waffle-fries, I shall make me return to the blasted collection o' WORDS that ye swingdoor Sallies call a 'gampleplay thread'!"
Cap'n Jackson Sparrowshank Esq. |
Scoundrel, waffle fries... not fries made of waffles! Ever been to Chik-Fil-A lol? But yes, IHOP is dericious, enough so that I have intentionally misspelled a word to emphasize it! :)
Temerith, not a fan of black olives and I don't eat shrimp anymore, but that sounds delicious! Most Mediterranean foods are!
