A Pathfinder Society scenario designed for levels 5–9.

When an ally of the Society reports that her sister's business is being harassed by the Aspis Consortium in the Varisian city of Korvosa, a team of Pathfinder agents is dispatched to the Green Market to assist. What they find there is more than simple strong-arming and intimidation, however. What mysterious forces bring the popular market its unlikely success, and can the PCs stop the Aspis Consortium from gaining control of what could become a lucrative resource for the rival organization?

Written by Jim Groves.

No briefing; mission is by missive from Amara Li (of all people.) Starts in Korvosa, Varisia, but allows Absalom buying (should it be relevant for folks.) Faction missions are disappointingly arbitrary and will be ignored.

Male Bear Burglar 1

The missive from Venture-Captain Amara Li was clear, and comes to mind as the skyline of Korvosa rises into view over the calm waters of Conqueror’s Bay in southern Varisia.

Amara Li wrote:

“Recently the Society acquired a new ally in Absalom named Sendeli Foxglove. Now she has made something of a personal request. Sendeli has a sister named Zeeva in Korvosa who owns a successful marketplace. A competing business interest is threatening Lady Foxglove, and her sister requests the Society investigate and intervene.

If you consider the matter pedestrian and more suited toward the local constabulary, I wouldn’t blame you. Even so, there are extenuating circumstances. First, the competing business interest is the Aspis Consortium. It makes little sense for them to harass a local greengrocer, so there must be a deeper layer to this. Maintaining close ties to Sendeli Foxglove is an agenda the Society feels is worth pursuing in and of itself, but if we can assist Zeeva while also hampering the Aspis Consortium’s efforts to gain influence in Korvosa, all the better.

There is smoke here, now find the fire. Extricate Zeeva Foxglove from this feud with the Consortium. If she’s anything like her sister, she’ll want to be an active part of this team—but you are not to let her put herself in danger. We’ve made that clear to her, and you’re expected to abide by it and ensure she does as well. If this matter is simply crooked business, then just resolve it and continue on to Magnimar where Venture-Captain Heidmarch will surely have more in store for you.”

As it turns out, having played through Curse of the Crimson Throne and run other scenarios that start in Korvosa, I'm actually mildly familiar with parts of this city (and the Pantheon of Many is one of them, though, there's, uh, a lot more, um, standing building now. And less dead cultists...)

Luis wrote:

These are the two appropriate knowledge checks for the scenario.

While there are only temples to Abadar, Asmodeus, Pharasma, Sarenrae, Shenlyn. There's shrines to Erastil, Iomedae, Torag, Desna, Cayden Cailean, Irori, Gozreh, Nethys, Calistria, Zon-Kuthon, Urgathoa, and Norgorber, but not full-blown temples. Only destructive, chaotic deities are shunned wholesale from buying land (not that many really would...) Pretty fair for overbearing Chelish influence and whatnot, eh?

A longboat arrives from the North with the beating of drums and a phat base line.

Once ashore, the dwarf regains his land legs and peers around the docks with his icy blue eyes. The cold winds pick-up, tossing about the long vermilion hair upon the monk's head.

The Lord of Mountains walks to the rendezvous designated by Venture-Captain Amara Li. Humbly, he bows before his fellow Pathfinders which he also considers friends.

The Green Market is located in a populated area of South Shore. Locals who can provide information on its history are easily found throughout the neighborhood or even the market itself.

Zeeva Foxglove is actually the second owner of the Green Market. Both occasions it has been open, the business was always popular and successful. The previous owner unexpectedly died, closing the doors roughly ten years ago. Oddly, at no time has any owner of the Green Market failed to show at least a fair profit.

The previous owner’s death was mysterious — a wasting disease struck quickly, without warning or discernable cause, and never spread outside of the market. Local farmers and craftsmen believe the market is otherwise lucky, but they don’t discuss its history openly. Brachus learns he find one of the few resident Shoanti, Telmayne Fire-Eyes, to learn that the Green Market was built on or near a site of importance to the Shoanti. While it isn’t as significant as the Grand Mastaba (a site lost to the Chelish when they settled Korvosa), but nevertheless still considered sacred.

Quote:

Zeeva Foxglove has lived most of her life in Korvosa. She is well known among locals and her reputation in the local community is solid. Her business dealings have always been fair, despite always being lucrative.

She was brought to Korvosa from Magnimar as a child. She is technically nobility in Magnimar, but she has no connection to it, and she lays no claim to a noble title in Korvosa. Orphaned after her parents died tragically, Zeeva and her siblings were raised by a distant cousin in Korvosa. Her sister Sendeli now lives in Absalom, and her estranged brother Aldern returned to Magnimar. Zeeva sold her portion of her inheritance to buy the Green Market, and so far it has been a good investment. Some suspect Zeeva is a witch, but a good one who is willing to use her powers to help her neighbors.

In addition, there is no trouble in finding the market at all (especially with an address provided from VC Li.) Korvosa is wealthy enough to have anything you have access to, should you need to purchase anything. Otherwise, you've gathered all the available info in only 2d4 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8 hours.

[irony]Dang kids! Puttin' graffiti on my NPCs! Back in my day, the only NPCs we had had three class levels than us and were just as bloodthisty as us![/irony] Well, I can work with this!

The Green Market is a mostly wooden structure built like a massive barn. It stands on a flattened section of raised earth five feet higher than the surrounding street. The structure is only a single story, but the ceiling rises to twenty-five feet and has numerous glass skylights that can be opened and closed with extending poles and ladders for lighting and ventilation. To the south is the main entrance that has large iron gates which can be slid and chained shut. On the southeast and southwest sides are exterior docks with sliding bay doors, where farmers and merchants can unload the wares from their wagons directly into stalls or bring them into interior kiosks. Inside, the majority of the ground is hard-packed earth lush with grass, except for the stalls (which have wooden flooring.)

Only the four southeastern stalls carry goods other than produce. The southern-most stall has casks of wine, oils, and vinegar. The other stalls sell quality clothing, jewelry, and finished furniture. On the northeast side is an office that can be secured by another sliding iron gate. North of the office is the market’s back entrance. Finally, in the center north is a park-like area with a large tree and flowered bushes kept alive by an open skylight above.

Roughly four dozen adults currently exist within the store, browsing, happily bartering with shop-keeps, milling about, or attending to their children. The youngsters run about the dirt, carrying parchment that appear to be vouchers dated for Jestercap (which is in about a month-and-a-half. Those of you familiar with history or post-Thrune Chelish tradition recall that this is a variation on the standard traditions of the season Jestercap, meant to recreate how devils of every size quelled the chaos of Cheliax and were given contracts for rewards in their future. Children receive vouchers for "greater gifts, come the great day," though with far less diabolical intentions in this recreation.

While there is no danger to be found here, what is easily spotted is a stunning woman with chin-length, strawberry blonde hair, wide brown eyes, and a generous smile. She carries no weapons and wears no armor and a sleek, black cat rubs itself against her ankle. She is currently adorned with a pair of false bone horns and beard, signing a few "contracts" for a few "imps," who seem more than eager to sign themselves away, giving promises of "listening to their superiors, lest they face the pointed circle."

Feel free to put yourself wherever, especially given the following offer, but just so you know where the office actually is...

She removes her devil outfit and moves to shake everyone's hand. "Thank you so much for coming. I can’t tell you how much this means to me. I’ve complained to the city, but it’s as if the Aspis Consortium has bribed everyone or the authorities just don’t care. I’m happy to pay for your lodging while you’re helping me. ”Initially they wanted to buy the Green Market, but I wasn’t interested. It’s been very successful and, though I never thought I’d find myself saying this, I love what I do. Then they returned, saying they wanted to lease space inside of it, but when I found out what they wanted to sell I declined. That’s when they started to harass me.” Shaking her head disapprovingly, she continues, ” Arms and armor have their place in business, but not the Green Market. My customers are not adventurers; they’re people looking for the food and goods they need to survive. The Green Market is a community-based business, not a blacksmith.”

“Initially, they just sent over pompous businessmen to convince me an alliance would ‘benefit us both.’ I repeatedly declined their advances, so they started sending around thugs to ‘persuade’ me. ‘Till now, I’ve run to the city guard or otherwise eluded the Aspis thugs, but it’s only a matter of time before their methods of intimidation get too dangerous for me to refuse.”

She looks to the elf to answer his query, ”Only on the first occasion, and that was the first attempts to buy me out wholesale. The last dozen times, they’ve sent different folks of various… backgrounds. All regular folks you’d see on the streets.  At first, I would have guessed those streets would be the ones around the Acadamae. As of late, I’d surmise that the streets you’d see these folks around are the worst parts of Old Korvosa…”

She then answers Varg, ”Not right now, but I’ll be here for the next few days. I believe if everyone sticks around enough, hopefully them seeing you all here as legitimate protection will shake them off. If not… well… I’d hope to subdue anyone that dumb and convince them we’re kind enough to take the moral high road.” She sighs, ”I’d even like to avoid bringing this into the legal sector again; the courts in this land are as tangled as they are in Egorian, and I’m sure the Aspis have bribed at least a handful of key components in it. If someone were to get hurt, or worse, I fear someone could turn whatever we do against us.”

---

That said, whenever anyone gets a moment, feel free to move your piece on the board to any rules-legal location and state if you'll be generally patrolling, milling about, or whatever. No need for rushing; I think I'll actually get to play this Thursday, since we started RoW (and I'm not running that.) This isn't a preemptive question ending; just wanted to get that out there.

Anything that goes on the head pretty much always defaults to "price it like a hat" for me. 1sp for each individual flower and a minimum of 3sp for the floral arrangement, though more spent gets you better quality/quantity. Closest actual plant is the holly/mistletoe combo for druid casting, and that's free.

"Oh, my! You shouldn't have!" she exclaims as she accepts the roses. "Armondo always has the best arrangements, does he not?"

The cat, seeming to understand interest vested in it, moves to Luisila as Zeeva produces a vase for the flowers. "Oh, she's my baby Nimeeta! I tend to prattle on like some old crone when it gets to more feline discussions, so let's talk later about that. Possibly while we wait for whatever the Aspis sends next?" She also directs Luisila to a stall in the southeastern corner of the market. "Cents-able Abe sells these. I don't want to have to fight you later, though*! I'm no good at that!" She chuckles to punctuate her point with the implied humor.

Pseudodragons and Imps actually often clash in this city, making interactions between the two like pint-sized gang warfare.)

Linnea listens attentively to Zeeva's story. "We've dealt with these consortium thugs before. I wouldn't be surprised if they're foolish enough to still try and cause problems, even with us here." She circles around the room to get to Varg.

"But Varg is large and in charge! He'll put a stranglehold on anyone of them Asspissers that tries to give you the strong arm."

"At least you're not taking sides in the market, eh?" Linnea asks with a wink.

"So, we'll just keep a look-out for the uglies. I think I spotted a clothiers - I'll start my watch over there."

Linnea peruses the outfits that are available. What would Ernie like?

I was the one that posted that back when Burglar had the "test map" up, 'cause ever since I first played in a scenario with you, your avatar reminded me of that album cover. I'm not a huge fan of the Nuge, but I just saw the resemblance and I guess Burglar liked it. Or he thought you put the picture up.

Male Bear Burglar 1

Kinda both on that account; wasn't sure who exactly put it up, but went with it. Plus, I just recycle URLs when I can. Your actual piece is south of the map, to the right (and outside of my Bass case.) I'm gonna see what everyone else's placement is before any movin' on. Zeeva's plan is to pretend like nothing's bothering her and make rounds about the market as normal, in case it affects anyone's decision.

While shopping and pondering between themselves, Linnea and Luisila determine a few facts for clothing purchases:

I spent waaaaay too long thinking about this:
  • The options at this market (and Korvosa as a whole) are largely one of four options: "Chelish influenced," "Varisian influenced," a modern blending of the two, or the more practical day-to-day clothing of the middle class.
  • Ernest is easily startled/excited (startl-cited?) by flashier and more exuberant Varisian get-ups. This could possibly be compounded by the still-prevalent factor of "freedom" in Varisian culture. I mean, just look at the sorceress or Harrower image; those all almost the standard "skin-coverage-ratio" it seems.
  • Another wildcard is the fact that his maternal side is heavily Chelish (as stated in My Enemy's Enemy), and the national influence in the local designs may or may not remind him of his mother's standard dress. How such a reaction will play out, nobody present is quite sure. Especially since...
  • For the duration of the previous mission in Rahadoum, Ernest didn't once try to run away from any of his normal triggers (not that he didn't panic, but nothing happens immediately. Psycology would imply that he's reigning it in, changing his mentality, or possibly just growing up mentally. A fourth, crackpot theory, is that he has been replaced by a doppelganger.)
  • Anything beyond this is all guesswork. Your choice will likely be derived from what emotion you're trying to pull from him.

More relevant to the actual mission at hand, after roughly an hour-and-a-half waiting, shopping, or what-have-you, during one of Zeeva's many rounds, three men pop out of invisibility! Two are Chelish males. Needless to say, the mightily-built twins aren't lookers, but with their scale mail and small armory containing a greatsword and longbow, they're still quite intimidating. One of them puts his hand on a very surprised Zeeva's shoulder, while the other locks gaze with the obvious pathfinder Ulfen.

The Taldane man in the back smokes a cigarette an old-timey cigarette holder and speaks. "Miss Zeeva, Let me introduce myself. I'm Narris Devane, problem solver, and my superiors really want to speak with you... Now, let's walk; let's talk..." She gives a desperate look towards Brachus's direction, like a help beacon before anyone actually gets a real stranglehold on her!

For readied maximum efficiency, the ready is "cast Hold Person at the next hostile entity within range 'in self-defense'."

To whomever between you two that does/casts something hostile first...:
spellcraft: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 ... If it's magic above first level, he doesn't ID it. If Shan does something punchy, it'd actually happen after you'd do your aggressive thing or apply your stance (since unarmed isn't instantly ID-able as threatening unless you're barbarian-tier obvious about it, though a applying a style is probably going to count.)

Shan's style stays the same the whole day. The follow below will probably set off the trigger anyways. Some poetic licinse will be used below, but its a move action then a standard attack.

Shan quickly darts across the market once he spots Zeeva being lead away by the inbreed duo.

Once he closes, he taps the first goon on the shoulder to draw his attention.

"Hey pachuco, milady has a business to run. Maybe you and I should be doing the talking."

To loosen up Goon 1's lips, Shan performs a ridge hand chop at the goon's jawline.

Apparently my post got ate last night when the boards were wonky.

Caradeum moves to the western side of the market, casually perusing the produce beings offered, purchasing a head of lettuce and putting a few leaves in his familiar satchel.

When the men appear, the elf curses when he notices how far away he is. Seeing Shan move in, Caradeum darts toward the end of the aisle, pulling his bow of his shoulder and reciting an arcane phrase.

Nearing the end of the stands, he points to the cigarillo smoking man, sending arcs of energy blasting across the market, and into the man's chest.

If you want a Will save from Caradeum: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Toppling Magic Missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 2, 1) + 3 = 9
Toppling check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Going with init order for reactions (since this is an uncommon moment where it actually matters);
Still round 1!

  • Caradeum moves south, lining up for a magic missile! The sorcerer ID's the (effective) 1st-level spell and drops Hold Person on the wizard! Caradeum finds himself paralyzed before he can finish the spell (though you get a full-round Will each round)!
    ---
  • I was actually referring to activating Turtle Style as a hostile action. Shan makes his way up to the potential aggressor and clocks him!
    ---
  • The brother not yet punched strangely opts to draw his longbow (and not his greatsword) and looses an arrow at Varg! Bow!: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12 His shot goes wide... evens nobreak: 1d2 ⇒ 2... and fails to break on the wall! Brachus seeing goon 1 and 2 suddenly appear out of the crowd and seeing Zeeva plead for help when they and a man appear assumes they are up to no good...which is confirmed when one of them shoots and arrow at Varg

Sorry Caradeum, I wanted to cast remove paralysis on you..but they are lined up way to nicely for a sound burst to pass that up

Brachus summons forth a burst of sound, rocking on of the nearby stalls and alerting everyone who hadn't noticed the commotion yet that something is going on.
