Getting this up now, regardless of start date.

Mission briefing is in the exotic lands of Katapesh, Katapesh: the city of Pactmasters where anything may be sold and bought under guidance of the followers of the First Vault's keymaster. Calling VC is "Lady Only-Appearing-in-This-Film" Wulessa Yuul, known faithful of Abadar.

THWAP! THWAP! THWAP! THWAP!

Luisila *smacks* her palm four times in a staccato beat, like Zynep Ravana dealing Harrow cards, onto her faction head’s immaculate desk in Skyreach.

“Four shots – four hits on the ghost! You should totally recall Desmond Aesculus, Roland Garros and Haraldir so we could have an archery contest! Even wearing smoked goggles I’d send every arrow through the target’s centre dot without using any of my Lady’s Luck!"

Ambrus Valsin tolerates Luisila’s prattle for a few moments more before putting down his quill. Looking up from the papers in front of him he says dryly:

“According to Amara Li’s report, Huscarl Stollufsen finished Gaudron Greenheart, and Brother Shan and Caradeum Genwyllian combined to take down his fire elementals.”

The Ten’s Chamberlain continues in an uncharacteristically calm and quiet voice. “Luisila, what say you close the door, sit down, and SHUT UP for a while.”

“The Heidmarchs were quite excited by your party’s re-discovery of Jormurdun and Venture-Captain Obo is chuffed that the Riftwardens have been recruited to the cause in the North. Even the Foxglove sisters are singing your praises. But here’s the thing, Luisila …”

“The Initiate that delivered your faction missive before you went to Taldor is still missing. Divination magic has revealed he was fine when he left you, but he departed the Pleasure Salon of Calistria in significant pain.”

“High Priestess Dyrianna admits he was at the temple but denies any wrong-doing of course!” Valsin curls his lip in disgust. “Some clichéd innuendo like ‘Diff’rent strokes for diff’rent folks’ and ‘don’t knock it ‘til you try it.’”

VC Valsin pauses and visibly composes himself before continuing. “The Decemvirate have directed me to drop the investigation because of the damage it may do to the Society. But let me tell you this, Luisila. If I EVER find out you had anything to do with the death of another Pathfinder, you will find out revenge is not the sole province of the Savored Sting!”

He looks back down at his desk before waving his hand at her dismissively. “Now don’t let your butt hit the door on the way out! Your transport to Katapesh leaves The Docks in one hour.”

Even has autumn turns winter throughout the Inner Sea, the heat of the sun in Katapesh can still beat down upon its lands. The crocodile lies in wait among the River Scorpius. Its eyes barely above the surface spotting its prey, a water crane.

Crane high steps through the tule reeds, stopping before its nest of 3 sand speckled eggs. The crocodile glides forward a bit as the crane turns its long neck around to look for land predators. Satisfied it is say, the crane nestles down upon her eggs.

Only a single ripple emanates from the crocodile's approach. In the distance, a camelopard lowers its head to take a drink from the river bank. With a single swing of its tail, the crocodile leaps from the river water toward the mother crane.

A second splash soon erupts and the crocodile finds its powerful jaws held agape by two skillet-sized hands. The moment of reprieve is all that is needed for the water crane to fly to safety. The crocodile swings its thick neck to return to river's depths. Not willing to compete with the jaws' powerful strength, the hands release the jaws allowing them to snap shut. The crocodile thrashes and tries to snap at its attacker. But it is unable to opens its mouth as two thick arms wrap around its snout. The crocodile tries to slap with its tail but soon feels the weight of another on its back.

The crocodile resorts to its last maneuver, the death roll. It dives into the river with its attacker in tow. The reptile begins to spin and thrash as it sinks deeper. Sharp jabs of pain begin to radiate along the ribs of crocodile. It becomes nauseous and tries to expel its previous meal. Unable to vomit out of its closed mouth, the crocodile begins to aspirate on its last meal. The crocodile's lungs begins to burn as it slowly blacks out.

Shan surfaces from the river with a deep gasp of air. He slowly trugs up the river bank, one hand firmly gripped on the tail of a crocodile. Cheers can be heard from the nearby game screen as men of different races step forth.

Once the pleasantries and congratulations have finished, Shan pulls his catfolk companion aside.

"Isis, use a charge from my wand on the croc and send him on his way. I don't want its life forfeit for a spectacle."

"Of course, Brother Shan. I have received notice that a Venture Captain Yuul is requesting your attention at the Katapesh Lodge."

The dwarf rubs his bearded chin with some thought. "Very well, our hunting expedition is over anyways. The locals always like to see what the guide they paid for can actually do. I wasn't planning on staying here much longer. I am becoming less tolerate of the heat by the day. Let's hope its not some rat bashing mission."

The catfolk purrs a reply,"Don't quit your day..."

"Silence is golden, Isis. Let's pack up and see how we can be of service to the Pathfinders of the Inner Sea."

Since we approach-eth the 12th month (and posting this is easier from home than at work), intro: Begin! We won't get past the intro to wait for Lin, but there's always questions. There's always questions.

The party arrives and is escorted by an individual with eyes of white to in a private meeting room at the famous Farseer Tower in exotic Katapesh, Venture-Captain Wulessa Yuul (a Vudrani woman of fit physique) wastes no time commencing her briefing. She gestures for everyone to sit at the opposite side of her desk, which is neatly organized with a number of stacks of paper.

“This has all the makings of a magnificent embarrassment,” she begins sourly. “The Grand Lodge recently sent a delegation to the mansion house of Temel Passad in Kerse. Passad is an enormously wealthy devotee of the Prophecies of Kalistrade, and he happens to possess the only known copy of the Mutani Manual of Martial Mastery in the Inner Sea region. The delegates were tasked with obtaining this rare tome, by either purchasing or leasing it.”

“By all accounts Passad is a difficult man, but the delegation proved... stupendously inadequate to the task. Not only did they fail to secure the manual, but they also managed to grossly insult the merchant. Two of the representatives were manhandled off the property and taunted by Passad that under no circumstances would he part with the Mutani Manual unless the Society could earn it, challenging us to take it from a hidden location among his many holdings throughout the region. The third delegate, who happens to be one of the foremost experts on all things Tian, was detained by Passad for what he termed ‘an extended conversation on the finer points of ambassadorial etiquette.’ He’s invoked an obscure Druman statute involving foreign embassies, making this kidnapping perfectly legal in his government’s eyes.”

“The Mutani Manual is an incredibly rare tome that depicts and describes hands-on exercises on all forms of physical, hand-to-hand combat. The tome is so rare that it is something that even the Devemvirate would like to own, or at least be granted access from which to copy relevant portions. Also, we count is as valuable for that tournament that happened a few years back that still happens randomly for some reason, even though it's supposed to happen every twn years or something.

She hands over a map copied (and documented as such) from city records (as the link in the description.) "This is the Ghenett Manor, Pasaad's most local holding and your target of infiltration. My theory is that if we accept his global invitation at each of his twelve holdings simultaneously, he will have no means to increase security at the true site. While your mission has only two primary objectives, if this is the true site, there are some very strict stipulations of which I am to inform you."

"Do as little damage to the property as possible—we’re not a legion of vandals, after all. Also, take nothing else of worth from the place. We’re explorers; not common thieves. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Given our already ample embarrassment with Passad, please don’t add to that dishonor by making off with the man’s silverware or his grandmother’s brooch, for Abadar’s bloody sake. No doubt the villa is a sumptuous and tempting target, but you must keep this in the forefront of your minds: The tome and the scholar are all that matter. Everything else is a distraction. The Decemvirate will take a special interest in your conduct on this assignment.”

“Lastly, we have reason to believe that others are in pursuit of the Mutani Manual, including agents of the Aspis Consortium. Be wary! Under no circumstances can the book fall into the hands of a rival organization. That said, your mission is to, if possible, recover the Mutani Manual of Martial Mastery and the detained historian Harmidio Besai. If they are not there, report their confirmed absence as quickly as possible so we can press more forcefully in other fronts. Now, do you have any questions?”

Wearing a canary yellow hijab recently purchased from Jangley’s Shop, one of the burglar’s endless markets in the Lower City, Luisila places a crocigator-skin boot up on Wulessa Yuul’s desk, before crossing the other on top of it.

She settles back in her chair, tilting her head upwards as she considers the briefing.

“I was once part of a mission that infiltrated a forest keep in Nirmathas, Venture-Captain. There were rumors of a cleverly marked passageway that allowed us stealthy egress. Is there anything like that associated with Ghennet Manor?”

“Is it possible to acquire plans of Pasaad’s Manor and are there any sewers beneath his residence?”

“Is the house currently occupied by servants or guards that could be bribed to allow us entry?”

Mild spoiler for Glass River Rescue:
Played 5-01 with another character, so Luisila has had nothing to with Pasaad before, GM Burglar. That’s the only scenario I’ve played that he’s been in.

“Why, yes it is, Cleaver.” Looking slightly embarrassed, Luisila sits up straight with her feet on the floor, as she pores over the map the big Ulfen is referring to.

“Though I was wondering if there are more stealthy ways to gain entry without knocking on the front door … Though I could pretend to be selling cookies or something …”

"The Prophecies of Kalistrade dictate a number of stipulations the faithful must adhere to, one of which is concerned with a show of wealth. In layman's terms, squirreling money away from the world is folly if not accurately depicted in their everyday lives. While this doesn't seem relevant, Temel's passive-aggressive nature and massive wealth suggests that any entryway will be sufficiently defended with guardians beyond the sum of this lodge's net worth. Taking a few minutes to survey the building from a distance or pry the veil of this with divination magics may prove valuable."

"To answer your questions, the Manor is a pleasure retreat and the nearest city is the one in which you stand now. I doubt your visit will be one of normal usage, but all the more expected. If there are any secret passages, it may be an escape route in case of emergency. This is unlikely, as Temel has a retinue of magical guards and attendants at all times for such emergencies." She continues, "As for servants, having such at all holdings is practically a staple of the Kalistocrat faith, so I'd be worried if there isn't any there."

"As for reaching the manor, I've got that covered. I've already gone ahead and chartered morning passage on a barge with a captain I've known personally for years. It is 12-hour trip, barring any incident. Given that you will arrive early in the evening, I would suggest you plan to either take either the cover of darkness and use subterfuge or take a direct approach head-on and minimize time loss. Each plan has its own merits and you may find one fits your group's structure better."

She looks to Varg, "Subtlety and guile isn't what I'm asking for; I'm simply asking for tact and good judgement. If you can search his food stores without taking a snack or twenty and scour his library only in the metaphorical sense, your mission will be a dual success and hopefully overshadow Mr. Besai's failure."

"Kalistocrats only employ associates of that nature for guests and as gifts; the faith forbids physical contact with others to the point of wearing gloves at all times." “Wait, wait. I still don’t think I understand.”

Luisila slips an arm around Linnea’s waist as she seeks clarification on the rules of engagement.

“VC Yuul, are you saying Temel Passad is likely to be at home in the manor, and one option is just to openly knock on the door and talk to him like he’s a villain in a Bames Jond play?”

She pauses to consider this. “That could be quite fun ... Though if there are deadly guardians, I don’t think it would be wise to split the party, Lin.”

“The alternative being casing the place from a distance and sneaking into the house under the cover of darkness or invisibility … which is how I initially envisaged we’d approach the mission. We could probably buy an invisibility scroll like we did for the Rhahadoumi caper if that’s the way we end up going.”

The priestess *shrugs* “Assuming I understand the options, I don’t mind which method we adopt. What do you think, Shan?”

Male Bear Burglar 1

"I can confirm for you is that the simplest plan could very well be a legitimate option, but as to whether Passad is in this manor, another of his holdings, or somewhere else entirely is not something I can confirm. Doubly so with the divinatory teams all preoccupied."

She sighs, "But the few things I can confirm are these: the Tien adage 'the army that tries to push on two fronts simultaneously need be twice times as strong as their opposition' remains true and that the Society as a whole were both challenged and invited to take the Manual is as confounding a situation for you as is it to me. How much of more of a 'challenge' than it is 'invitation' is anyone's guess."

She nods her head, "But if you have to split up, I trust you to understand the risks. You were all recommended by a number of Venture Captains to be 'sufficiently adequate at improvisation,' and are already knowledgeable with each other's methods and weaknesses."

Luislia wrote:
“Though I was wondering if there are more stealthy ways to gain entry without knocking on the front door … Though I could pretend to be selling cookies or something …”

"Do you still have your uniform from your youngling years? More importantly, does it still fit?"

Shan says with a slight smirk to keep the discussion relaxed. The investigate of this Manual has defiantly peaked his interest. Any tome that could further his development within the martial arts is a true treasure. He rubs his chin sideways before giving his thoughts on the mission at hand.

"I am not a practitioner of the magical arts, but there has to be a spell that can locate an object of one's desires. Such a spell could lead us in the correct direction so that we can avoid any Kalistocratic entanglements.

"We may want to invest in items or prepare spells that can immobilize opponents. Sleeping spells for the living, web-like spells for non-living. If this was a dwarven manor with somebody who has as much wealth as this Passad is reported to have, there would be some type of construct guarding the inner sanctum. No better guard then one that doesn't eat, drink or sleep. Of course, 'defeating' a construct typically results in its destruction. And destruction of property is against the rules of engagement set for by Passad.

"For a preliminary search, I could see if there are any secret passages along the stone walls. But I would think some secret passage leaving the manor would be further away from the grounds to escape or enter under disguise."

Male Bear Burglar 1

"A good point to bring up on constructs and control spells. Katapeshi law has a firm ruling on self-defense, which was brought about by citizen concerns referring the Aluum installations. If something attacks you first or displays obvious enough intent, the courts will likely follow the principle of stare decisis, if there is even a reported claim. This protection of self ruling will likely carry to outsiders and anyone else invited on this escapade. Avoiding balls of fire in the painting hallway is more the intent of my statement."

"Fortunately, every 'covert' faction under the sun has ceased having agents retrieve seemingly inordinate objects in the past few years. This situation would likely be incredibly muddled with that Dralneen woman telling you to steal a single bottle of perfume or something..."

“Oh, almost forgot.” She flips her barbarian friend a clear spindle ioun stone. “For your wayfinder just like last time, Cleaver. Hmm … I might review my spell list based on Shan’s advice.”

“So have we decided on an open-ish approach or are we going to try stealth?”

Male Bear Burglar 1

For clarity, stare decisis is the ideology that a court will generally agree with previous rulings, barring radical, new information or variation. In this case, the ruling that if an Aluum (Constructs specifically built to guard the stalls in Katapesh, Katapesh) were to go bonkers and attacking people, the act of fighting back would be ruled self-defence and place burden of proof on the owner of the construct if a legal ticket is opened. In this case, the Society was challenged to take something from one of his manors and is enough cause to expect destruction of golem or bound outsider if they are set to blindly attack.

Maybe I'm being humorless, but can't a rapier be wielded in two hands? Though it's finesse-able, it's not in the 'light' weapon category in the equipment list. "Was that when you worked with him in the river kingdoms, Lu? He did go through a spell there... But ever since he got back from the Ruby Phoenix Tourney, he's been in pretty high spirits. Keeps trying to show off that silly tattoo. I don't have the heart to tell him that the extra Tien characters that were added say I'm a Pretty Lady, and not whatever overly-boastful claim of prowess and virility he thinks they mean."

Luisila can’t help laughing out loud. “That’s hilarious, Lin! I didn’t know Des had been chosen to compete in the Ruby Phoenix Tournament though – that’s quite an honor.”

“Oh, but in answer to your question. No, it was during the Way of the Kirin affair in the Minatan Archipelago. Shan was there! Weren’t you, Shan?”

Caradeum glances up sharply at the mention of the Tournament. "A colleague and occasional mentor, Shinkeer Aswander participated in the most recent iteration of the Ruby Phoenix. I would assume it was in the same group. He had been promoted to Seeker just prior to the tournament, if I recall correctly. I think he sported a fresh tattoo as well."

"Oh, I think he mentioned a guy named Shinkeer." Linnea turns back to Luisila, "Yeah, I bet he's over at the Flaxseeed Lodge right now trying to show it off...Crazy nut."

Have we decided on how to get after this guy at the manor? We should be headin'out, no?

The night of rest before the mission is only as eventful as each individual makes it. Subsequently, the 12-hour boat ride is just as enthralling. Left off in the clandestine rainforest with no more than a nod, the barge continues west as the stars begin to emerge from the burgeoning evening sky. It looks as though it will be a clear night, good for stargazing. After a brief patrol (even at a gross distance) around the building, the scouting party find an unarmed middle-aged gentleman in a very nice servant's outfit sitting on a fine chair in front of the gates.

Do yer thing, talkers.

Varg stands to the back of the group as they approach with his arms crossed.

He looks like he’s … pretty groovy.

“How’do you do? Isn’t it a lovely night! The Stranger is travelling through the Caravan in the heavens. An omen of prosperity for one at the expense of the other if I’m not mistaken.”

“Oh, forgive me! I’m Luisila evangelical servant of the Savored Sting ... but please, don't judge a book by its cover. Might you be the handyman at the big house up yonder?”

“Our boat hasn’t broken down but we were wondering about the house’s owner – I understand he hosts parties for rich weirdos. We’re kinda expected but it would be nice to know what we’re walking into. I can’t exactly time warp back once we’re inside. ”

“Touch-a touch-a touch me! I’m shivering with anticip… so what can you tell us? Is there a way you can stealth us in so we can surprise our host? Kinda … go up to the lab and see what’s on the slab. Doing so could make you a man! ”

Though I’d prefer he had blonde hair and a tan …

"Indeed, kind sir. It seems that there is a light on over at Passad Temel's place," Linnea notes, stepping forward to the man. "I am Linnea Joculus, finest whip-mistress outside of Cheliax."

"But, I'm not here to put whip to hide tonight, no. My associates and I are here tonight because we have indeed been summoned. Summoned to perform for Lord Temel and his guests. That wild brute there is Varg. Next to him is Shan. They are our muscle - their feats of strength would dazzle ol' Hercules himself. Caradeum there, he will astound anyone with is arcane acumen. Luisila can charm anyone with her lovely singing. And me, well, I've already mentioned my talent. Please, allow us to pass, we'll find our way once inside, I'm sure."

Bluff: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27

Linnea does her best to try and convince the man to just let them in. Bluffing that we're some kind of circus act seems a fairly believable possibility.

Out of a lack of anything to add, Caradeum wiggles his fingers over his familiar satchel, while mumbling arcane sounding phrases, then pulls a rabbit out by its ears, and holds it up.

Of course, after re-reading our instructions, I guess they're probably expecting us? Since it seems like the Society was invited to complete this challenge. Oh well...

Awkward starts are still starts, technically.

Note the weird "West is North For No Reason"ness of this map. I'll probably mess this up at least once. Interruption mid-text is fine (this beginning scene works better in a live game), but I want to get everything out now since Voluntary Overtime Month continues.

The 5-foot-thick walls surrounding the villa and its grounds are 15 feet high and made of a polished gray stone with artful geometric etchings covering every inch of their surface, in the style of a Qadiran palace. The wall offers little purchase and may only be climbed with a successful DC 18 Climb check or magical means. The paving stones before and beyond the wide open, 20-foot-wide gates are uniformly octagonal and are speckled in shades of green, red, and gray. The gates themselves are 17 feet high, clearly fashioned by a gifted master of metalwork; had they color other than the black iron, one could easily mistake them for intertwined vines and sprightly fey creatures flitting through their foliage. The heavy iron rod that bars the gate is held in place by a clever lock inside the gate that is hard to reach through the bars, making opening the device particularly difficult from outside. Scaling the gate would be much easier than climbing the walls. Such efforts are unnecessary and more complicated, what with the man sitting right at the gates.

The man stands from his chair and bows deeply, "Then you must be the Pathfinders here for the open challenge, as Master Passad nor any guests of pleasure have been in for some time and has no such festive arrangements. Am I correct in this observation?" He stands to shake all appropriate hands, displaying his still-notable build despite his middle-aged state, "Ah, my apologies, where are my manners? I am Gamaradim Po, the caretaker of the grounds.  Master Passad took the time out of his schedule to forewarn me that a 'mixed-ethnic group of individuals' may arrive and that I am 'to assume they are the Pathfinder Society, here to partake in the high-risk physical challenge' already in progress within the premises. I presume are here for the book, yes?" He opens the gates and gestures for the party to enter. "For your own safety, please remain on the cobblestone walkway."

The paving stones continue past the gate, leading up to the villa's great double doors. To the south, there is a turnaround for carriages and other forms of conveyance. The doors are made of thick teak and carved with scenes depicting principles of the Prophecies of Kalistrade, recognized with a successful DC 15 Knowledge (religion) check. A pair of fat, gold rings hangs suspended from the mouths of djinn-like heads firmly affixed to each portal-extraordinarily expensive door knockers. These cannot be removed without damaging both door and knocker, though their value would likely be 275 gp apiece if a one were reckless enough to do so. The doors have no lock-they are typically barred with a stout beam of wood within, but such is not the case now. Handles of iron, wonderfully wrought to mimic blooming roses, can be used to open the doors easily.

To the north is a crystal-clear pond. The more perceptive of the party see about three dozen fanciful fish floating on the surface, their formerly colorful scales now ragged. Two arrows stick in the ground on the southeastern edge of the pond and the black-feathered shafts of four other such missiles can be seen protruding above the surface of the pond. The ground at the edge of the pond is soaked with moisture. At a glance, no other traces remain of what appears to have been some strange act of vandalism.

The butler pushes open the doors and gestures to enter, "Welcome to the Ghenett Manor, or perhaps more aptly, the Ghenett Manor Gauntlet. If you would follow me please, my wife is preparing a complimentary masala chai*for a more traditional introduction and to answer any questions you may have. Know my Master has forbidden me from compromising the defenses of the grounds, but the offer these pleasantries is to be extended to all guests attending during the event. He has spared no expense, as should a man of his financial stature." *For those with Vudrani, this translates literally to mixed-spice tea.

This opulent entry hall was once a proudly appointed place, with detailed and realistic murals of a marketplace on the walls, carved mahogany benches, ancient statues of red stone-each bearing distinctly Tian features-and a pair of huge fur rugs assembled from the pelts of unusual and exotic animals. Clear signs of violence now mar the room: four of the benches are overturned and one to the southwest is charred, a statue has been reduced to rubble, and both rugs are torn and ragged as if hacked at with knives.

Gamaradim leads the group through the only following set of doors to the West. A rich green rug of Qadiran manufacture with dizzying geometric patterns filling its thick pile runs down the middle of this charming room. To the north and south are finely carved mahogany benches, before which sit exquisite tables hewn from the same wood. The stone walls are painted in subtly shifting shades of green, so that the color grows lighter the further up the surface it proceeds-clearly the work of an artisan of considerable talent.

Cleaning in this room is a sandy blonde-haired woman of roughly 30 years old in similar garments as Gam. "This is Domitilla Po, my wife."

She bows and speaks as Gam moves around the room, pulling the comfortable chairs for each accepting individual. "It's a pleasure to meet you. The tea will be ready momentarily."

True to her word, she returns shortly with a fine set tea set on a platinum tray holding a boiling porcelain kettle. Each individual is offered a napkin monogrammed with Temel's hilarious-in-this-context initials and a matching porcelain cup.

Upon reaching the door, Linnea cannot help but jest, "So, Passad likes big knockers eh?" She gently jabs Luisila in the ribs with her elbow while she stifles a giggle.

Upon sitting down and waiting for the tea, Linnea notes the signs of battle from the entryway. "So... did all that just happen recently? Or is your master going for the ransacked look? Either way, it certainly makes a statement."

When the tea is brought forth, Linnea takes the cup pored for her and sniffs it. She holds up the monogrammed napkin. "This must be the finest piece of TP I've ever felt." She rubs the napkin on her cheek. "Mmmm, so soft..." She goes to take a sip of the tea, but pauses a moment, studying the host's body language - curious of this show of generosity.

Varg stands silently and awaits the drinking of the tea by one of the girls. When Lin stops, he does not bother to grab a cup.He crinkles his nose.

I'd rather have an ale.
