Calling VC: Norden Balentiir, to his lodge is Sothis, the capital of Osirion, for a "cooperative group request based on past experience." Excludes Aakif, who is investigating the son of Proconsul DuMarc, Tobyn DuMarc (whom while serving abroad in Sothis from his home nation of Taldor, has been seen and reported to have started worshiping Sarenrae.)

For the heck of it, give me a Gather Information check for than the below. To do this, you'll enter the following with brackets instead of parentheses:

(dice=Diplomacy)1d20+17(/dice)

Given that you have a +17, I'll dunk the automatic results below. Bold is (B)"Dialogue"(/b), but with brackets instead of parenthesees and whatnot. There's a button at the bottom of the post window right underneath the "posting name" that describes this in better detail. The shorthand usage, though, is "Bold is Dialogue, Italics is thinking or writing. Everything else is variable from person to person."

---

About the same time Mr. Pink is taking an axe to the face in Absalom, a dialogue is happening in Sothis with a different, off-the-clock Pathfinder Agent...

Asking around, Aakif learns the following a little bit of information from the plentiful markets of the city. A regular informant, a Kelishite faithful of Abadar named Fayeid Harokaran who sells trinkets out of his simple shop ("Fayeid’s Goods on the Eye of Sothis," tells his fellow Kelishite what he knows about the man as he stops into his Osirion Antiques store.

He cleans a tablet lacking a corner as he speaks to his current "customer." "Tobyn, first in line to the DuMarc Shipping fortune, arrived here no more than a week ago by way of a merchant caravan unaffiliated with his family's business. About twenty-something... Taldan complexion... likes to cut his hair shorter than the current season's fashion. A bit of a hothead, but nothing different than any other old-money Taldan. Rumor has it they move slaves around, but there's no evidence of this, so take it as you will." He looks around to make sure nobody's wandering into the conversation and leans in closer, taking a few parchments from underneath his shop's banister. "In fact, this whole situation feels like a bad rumor. A southern Taldan, converting to his nation's heretical faith? This might just be a ploy to exploit the kid's exploratory nature to get a leg up in his family's business."

The cat lashes the priestess’s bloodied back for the twelfth time, tearing through what little flesh remains. Luisila flinches but does not dare cry out.

Sonata Rask’s effort would make the bosun of a Chelish man ‘o war proud. Not only because she dislikes the victim; ‘Candy the Courtesan’ is keen to remove any doubt that she is being lenient with one of her sisters.

“Did you flinch, Luisila?” The high priestess's voice is eerily calm. “Another dozen lashes, Candelabra.”

This time Luisila audibly *groans*

“Fine, make it two dozen.”

The aftermath leaves Candy panting and the recipient unconscious. The Archbishop of Absalom looks down at the bloodied form supported only by the ropes at her wrists.

“Have you heard my latest Dominant bull to the faithful, Luisila? It has afforded me many accolades from the Returned in Kyonin.” Lady Dyrianna’s smile does not reach her eyes. “My research was top flight, if I do say so myself. I am so pleased with the result that I decided to divert the punishment of a rather naughty member of my staff to an innocent whipping girl of her choice.”

“Can you believe that for some people that punishment is worse than if it had been inflicted on themselves?”

The high priestess uses two manicured fingers to feel the young acolyte’s carotid pulse before sighing at the result. “We should be overjoyed, Luisila. Another of the sisterhood now kneels at Calistria’s Feet.”

Having run at least 2 other scenarios pertaining to this city, I've added a number of locations to the overland map that are Major Attractions of the city as well as the actual scenario map ones. (Plus Ernest's family's house, which is not part of the scenario.)

Aakif investigates his faith's interests thoroughly throughout the solo week, determining a few facts: Tobyn only went to one sermon, the traditional morning ceremony, two days ago in the arms of a Garundi woman around his age. He left halfway through in a huff, irritated by something. As to what it was, nobody is quite certain, as the couple left immediately back north.

Pulling her comforter and pillow over her head to hide the growing sunshine, the half-elf tries to fight for a few more minutes of sleep.

Still, the insistent black bird taps at the window. "FINE." She gets up and retrieves the message from the bird before it flies off.

With a yawn, Linnea reads the missive. "Back to it, eh?" she says to nobody. She starts to dress, pausing only to think to herself, 'Maybe I'll have a bit of time to try and bother Ernie, if he's not busy...'

As the PCs arrive in Sothis by way of Ernest (for drop point familiarity) and the Hao Jin Tapestry, they are met outside the warehouse to which they arrived by one Ahzad Alekh, fellow high-ranking Pathfinder and Sothis native. He leads the collection of agents to Sothis Lodge and informs them to stay close, especially if unfamiliar with the city. As the group approaches the Sothis Lodge, a high-walled former prison made of slick white limestone, Ahzad keeps alert to his surroundings.

DC 15 Perception:
Pathfinder guards posted on the top of the wall. The Sothis lodge is on high alert.
DC20 Sense Motive:
No small number suspiciously-loitering men and women gather in the streets outside the lodge, clearly hiding weapons and armor under disguises of general passers-by. The Sothis Lodge is on high alert.
Ahzad escorts the group through the outer gates, speaking to a guard inside a second set of barred doors, which open a crack to allow the PCs to squeeze through. A number of Pathfinders of varying ages and sorts idle among the date palms and sycamores of the lodge’s inner garden as the PCs are further ushered to the main, two-story structure that houses Balentiir’s office, the lodge’s vaults, and other resources for Pathfinders stationed there.

As the PCs pass through the crowded common room into Balentiir’s private study, the leather-clad venture-captain greets them with a stern look, and offers them seats before his large, cedar desk while nervously fiddling with his bright red sash.

He tosses three wayfinders onto the table and begins speaking. “These symbols of our order—tools we’ve all used since our first days as Pathfinders—belonged to former agents living here in Sothis; all of them were found dead only days ago. Last week the vaults of this lodge were broken into and many valuable relics and unidentified artifacts were stolen; in their place, we found this note.”

Balentiir rolls up a map of Sothis on the desk, revealing a finely penned note beneath. “Our enemies grow brazen! I fear these villains won’t stop with these three murders. Many of the items they stole from under our noses held deadly curses, and in the hands of some as malicious as these rogue Pathfinders, who knows what devastation they may unleash upon our brethren in and around Sothis?"

“I’ve ordered that all local Pathfinders report to the lodge until this is resolved, and as you surely noticed on your way in, most have. We’ve got strength in numbers here, but several valuable members of my stable of agents have yet to report in. Here is a list of the Pathfinders, including retired Pathfinders, who live in Sothis that we have been unable to contact or are unaccounted for."

"Bring them safely here. Many of you came highly recommended from a number of captains in both of Urban Adventure and Curse Management, both of which will be vital in this task, as time is of the essence. This resurgence of the Shadow Lodge may have done them harm, or,” he says, lowering his voice, “worse still, converted them."

"If you come across any of the stolen relics, use extreme caution with them, but return them here nevertheless. They are extremely dangerous and we can’t have them out in the city at large."

"Additionally, find out whatever information you can about faction who have adopted the abandoned moniker of the Shadow Lodge." His face gets a solemn look, "I questioned the Sending last week from the headquarters about Dreng's report of the Shadow Lodge returning, as I had never completely trusted in his cognitive abilities after the incident with the Ruby Cat Statue..." He looks to the Wayfinders with a profound sadness. "Never again. This blood will never leave my hands, but I assure you, I will fight to get them justice."

"However, I am simply one man with a broken lodge. Only together can we drive back the sandstorm of shadows threatening to engulf us once more. Now, I’m sure you have many questions. I’ll attempt to answer them as well as I can, but delay not, for I know our enemies are wasting no time on their end.”

Pathfinders,

The theft of your precious relics is but the first stage of what will surely be your destruction. While our numbers are few, we will nevertheless bring the Decemvirate and all those loyal to them to their knees. Too long have they cursed the very agents who make the Society what it is, and now we will see to it that you who turn a blind eye to this neglect suffer the same curse. Your days are numbered, Pathfinders.

The Shadow will rise again!

What can you tell me about...

Kaphiri:
“He’s a blond half-elven warrior who retired from the Society and took up a post as an officer in the Sothan guard. Apparently, he still likes walking the beat with the regular guardsmen. He sent back a note saying he ‘refuses to hide in the lodge.’ Try to persuade him that we need him here, even if only to serve as a sentry until this situation is resolved.”
Nuru:
"Nuru is an ascetic unarmed fighter from the country of Nex. She reported back from her last mission late last year, but hasn’t been to the lodge since. She’s a quiet type, known for sitting cross-legged for hours at a time.”
Sutekh:
“After he retired from the Society, Sutekh opened a business selling potions and other alchemical paraphernalia. He’s a wizard of some ability and I believe he has done quite well with his shop.”
Tarik:
“An academic scholar, he found a cache of priceless works of art in the Underdunes five years ago and retired a rich man. He lives in the most expensive part of Sothis, inside the Black Dome.”
Uspia:
“Uspia is a Qadiran cleric of Sarenrae who now serves at the Temple of the Eternal Sun. She seems devoted to the kinder aspects of her god, more about honesty and healing than the harsh burning light some Keleshite priests advocate.”
Zahur:
“Zahur just returned from an assignment in the Screaming Jungle. He’s a Thuvian sorcerer whose powers relate to the element of air.”

Once in the presence of the Lodge's leader, Luisila is uncharacteristically serious and business-like. She listens carefully to the briefing before saying. “I won’t take up too much of you time, Venture-Captain. I’m eager to go to work.”

“The cursed relics. How many? What do they look like? What beneficial powers do they bestow? Is touching them enough to get cursed?” She glances at Varg. “Huscarl Stollufsen and I came across a vahrse like this in rural Taldor.”

“Can we have directions to the missing agents’ last whereabouts or are you supplying a guide to the city?”

Luisila hesitates before asking a final question. “While in the first instance we will assume the missing agents remain loyal, in the event they have been turned, will you authorize a '00' license for the five of us, or do you want them brought in alive?”

She then turns to her companions. “I’m thinking let’s get a quick win for the good guys. How about we try the half-elf warrior Kaphiri first and see if Brachus or Aakif can change his mind. If not ... then Cleaver can have a go!” The priestess *winks* again.

“As for what’s going on … Venture-Captain Dreng believes an unknown individual or syndicate is trying to bring back the Shadow Lodge! Cleaver and I tracked down one of their key lieutenants in Absalom who taunted us that even with Torch a fugitive and the original Spider captured, there are plenty of others willing to take their place.”

Luisila shakes her head. “This NEW Shadow Lodge is far more ruthless than Torch’s faction and thinks nothing of assassinating loyal Pathfinder agents to advance their goal of taking over the Society. We’re here in Sothis to do what Cleaver and I just did Absalom.”

I'm not 100% since I've never sat down and read ISG, but aren't deity-specific spells specific for worshipers of said deity for divine casters? It's more of a gut-feeling from thinking about the "Faiths of" books, but I'm far from 100%. A cursory search indicates this as "intent, but possibly not the actual implementation." If that's the case rules-wise, you could possibly buy CL1 versions in town; the Ruby Prince is, in fact, a Cleric of Abadar, and his faith is most profound in the city.

Looks like ISG did change it up. You're good to prepare it; Abadar is a pretty big deal around here.

Balentiir answers the questions as they come.

Quote:
“The cursed relics. How many? What do they look like? What beneficial powers do they bestow? Is touching them enough to get cursed?” She glances at Varg. “Huscarl Stollufsen and I came across a vahrse like this in rural Taldor.”

"I've read such things in reports from the Taldan lodges, which is why I specifically requested your presence. As for the objects taken, it was an obvious inside job; Someone tampered with the alarms on the vault. We had just managed to secure part of a rare find from the tomb of Khetera II, the Pharaoh of Misfortune. Valuable funerary trappings, including Khetera’s headdress and girdle, which took months of negotiation to pass through the Osirian Cultural Ministry, are gone. The worst part is we don’t know exactly what was taken, they stole all the cataloging paperwork as well. Almost everything from that dig was cursed, however, so whatever they took shouldn’t be allowed out in the wider world."

Quote:
“Can we have directions to the missing agents’ last whereabouts or are you supplying a guide to the city?”

"I'll include directions in a debriefing packet. Mr. Hazam here has proven incredibly competent at absorbing the layout of the city in his week here. The church of Sarenrae has a solid alibi for him, and they are not a faith that is prone to falsehoods. He should be most proficient at showing you the town."

Quote:
“While in the first instance we will assume the missing agents remain loyal, in the event they have been turned, will you authorize a '00' license for the five of us, or do you want them brought in alive?”

"While I'd like to see as little bloodshed as possible, I understand that giving you a no-kill order is possibly effectively resigning you to such a fate. You are authorized to do what is needed, but know I don't have the control over the laws of the city. Keeping that in mind, self-defense laws are very reasonable in the area, given that you're not found in a compromising position."

The woman is heard shuffling to the door and undoing the deadbolt, only briefly pausing at the whistle. She reaches towards her curved sword, just in case.
@Aakif:
Faint Evil, points towards the woman, sayeth the compass.

The door opens and out peers a woman described earlier. She carries (and stops reaching towards) a well-worn scimitar and golden holy symbol, likely from her adventuring days. She wears robes not unlike others of her faith, big and airy. Easily noticing one of the numerous Wayfinders, she brightens a little "Oh, good morning. I'm guessing by the badges one of you went and got something nasty on a delve. Well, come on in, I'll make some tea..."

She moves back to the table, adjusting the benches for optimum sitting efficiency.

At Luisilla's question:"If that doesn't lure her out we can try something else but I have to concentrate to be able to view through the door, so I can't cast anything while doing that. So unless we find a window to look through..that's a no on creating water on top of he....llo lady. How are you doing?"

Aakif tilts the shining wayfinder at an angle so the party can see the compass face. I'm assuming we didn't talk about the shining wayfinder in advance, but there's a chance that someone else in the party knows what it means. Aakif then enters the house, casually walking in, and makes a motion with his arm for the rest of the group to enter. Aakif stays near Varg if possible.

"Yes my good lady, I have a wound that needs immediate attention. Unfortunately my companions and I are out of healing resources, and some curative magic would be highly appreciated."

Clearly this is not true, so Bluff: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37

"Before the healing, I also had a question concerning the Birth of Light and Truth. The first passage in chapter 15 completely baffles me. Could you possibly give me some insight to its meaning?"

Here Aakif is checking to see if this lady knows her Sarenrae lore. The chapter I'm asking about does not exist in Sarenrae's book. I (as a player) don't know how many chapters are in the book, but Aakif would. If there are only 14 chapters, I'll ask about chapter 15, etc.

According to the deities book, the Birth of Light and Truth often contains blank pages at the end, so followers can add their own personal experiences to the book. If she's legit, her answer might be something along those lines. If she's not legit.... well, I'm guessing we'll get to that shortly. Just for the record - Aakif does not sit.

She gives Brachus a smile as she turns around to head back to the table, "Oh, you Caydenites. I remember the one I was always stuck with on delves. What's that thing he always said? 'Best thing about the new members; I keep getting older, but they stay the same age?' Eeh heh heh." She has a chuckle as Luisila brushes past her during the tea order.

Luisila possibly innocuous spoiler:
There's no illusions up, but what you do notice is that you're pretty sure that the eyes of Uspia’s golden holy symbol of Sarenrae are hammered shut.

She gets a serious look when Aakif "admits" to his problem. She thinks for a moment, "Oh, you mean Saint Maratia's entry in the Clergy Appendix? Sure, some of it's rambling by the end and doesn't match up with what she begins telling, but she wasn't quite there for her last few decades. The last few passages were dictated and not read, if you get my meaning. You have to remember that the the half-angelic aspect of Angelfolk don't always mesh well with human blood."

This is an accurate assessment of what one could assume is the fifteenth entry in the Temple's "empty pages for people to fill in" appendix of their Temple's grand copy. Aakif is aware there's a section in the local chapter's Master Copy of a well-aged Aasimar that ends abruptly, just after going into a tirade asking why evil thoughts can permeate one with angel's blood so easily. The following page apologizes and describes that the woman has lost her sense of self in what can only be imagined as a case of dementia coupled with identity confusion. This is very likely to be a true response.

"We usually use it in the lessons about keeping vigilant for darkness in the light, but I'd presume your current 'issue' is a little more pressing, right? Just come back to the kitchen; you can help me with the tea while I check for anything that might help. What are you symptoms...?" She keeps moving towards the curtain, not really stopping her middle-aged self. As she pulls the curtain, a wave of smells that are a heavy mix of spices pushes through the entryway, not unlike any other kitchen in the region. She gestures for the "diseased" 1/3 of Team Cleric to follow her.

"This won't take but a minute, though I'm sure the Temple would let you clean up. Just tell them I sent 'ya."

Which seems legitimate; the desert gives little options to cleaning up beyond using magic to do so (and when it does, it's Prestidigitation.) She lives close enough to the temple that she likely doesn't have a room for such things. Plus, being at the temple that much would mean serving as much as she does.

Aakif nods his head in agreement with Uspia's answer. "Thank you, that does make sense. I seem to recall some stories about an elder aasimar follower of the lady. I understand all too well what you mean about keeping vigilant for the darkness in the light. What about you, Uspia? Have you ever experienced any darkness in the light... personally? Maybe recently? I can help you if this is so. Remember that Sarenrae teaches that even those who fall to darkness are not beyond her redeeming light. Usipia brushes off the Sarenite lecture (the addresser detects no third parties or other out-of-place things beyond things already seen), addressing the person invading her room. "Honey, I've been retired from the Society for years now. Adventuring starts to hurt more when your bones hit a certain age. And my room won't have anything that's going to make you feel any cleaner if the dust is what's getting to you, though you're welcome to confirm this yourself. I've got a feeling you're not from around here; only houses under the Dome have such frivolous amenities like that." She makes her way past the kitchen curtain, out of sight if not immediately followed. "Now if none of you are going to help an old lady with a tea set, it'll be just a minute. Newbies these days, no respect, I tell 'ya."

The room Luisila looks into is, in fact, a bedroom, pictured quite accurately from the map. It's not quite neat, but nothing out of ordinary of a standardly-messy individual. The door opens into the bedroom and conveniently includes the handle on the map for once. It would require actually entering to see the whole room any more than a brief scan.

Position updates are requested. Luisila has no trouble opening the door. If you are following to help with tea, you may move yourself into one of the doorway squares on either side of the curtain entryway and remove Box #2.

Luisila then begins dragging a dining room bench across the floor to barricade the bedroom door. The feet of the item *Squealing* and *RUMBLING* across the wooden floor as she does so.
