Shilyn DeSable |
and now for the anagram pun.. "Amnur gets the burnt of the fire beetle surprise.." Sorry, couldn't resist.. it was there.. kind of like a jewel just waiting to be liberated from some high society wench..
Stepping inside the room, Shilyn is in time to see several bugs scurry from the trash pile and attack Amur's armored boot. "Hungry little beggers," she says as she lifts her mace to pound one into paste should one slip by him.
attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore waits, slightly down the corridor outside and out of sight of the beetles, though she can hear the sounds of 'battle' ahead, so she slips forward to try to see around the doorway.
Amnur Roanock |
Surprise Round
The startled dwarf is barely able to cling to his weapon as the beetles burst from cover, his joy at finding the treasure drowned in expletives. Cursing loudly at whatever God would let a bunch of fire beetles attack one of his chosen servants, Amnur sweeps the waraxe from right to left, trying to demolish one of the bugs. Fire Beetle 3 is my desired target if possible.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 and Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
EDIT: Hmm, some lackluster rolls there.
GM Beman |
Amnur's swing finds nothing but the floor as the beetles scatter. One of them lunges back toward him (1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2) and once again bounces harmlessly to the ground...where it finds itself being crushed to death by Shilyn's mace.
Orion's Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Feel free to post actions in any order & I'll resolve in initiative order during tomorrow morning's update.
Amnur Roanock |
Growling Amnur swings once again, this time with an overhead chop, trying to imitate Shilyn's success.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 and Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore just watches for a second, the fight being well-engaged by others already. Then she takes aim with her crossbow and fires at one of the beetles on the ground
to hit: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 2 - 4 = 18
to confirm crit: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 2 - 4 = 16
dmg: 1d8 ⇒ 4
crit dmg if applies: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Orion O'Connor |
Let's see if my training has paid off. I would imagine. those things explode. I and suddenly, unnaturally quick, he has two knives in his hands and is throwing.
double throwing knives.: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 191d4 ⇒ 2
double throwing knives.: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 191d4 ⇒ 4
Lauranna Stormblessed |
Lauranna stepped up and swung the Baridiche low in a scything cut that just barely avoided Amnur's ankle as she smoothly struck the beetle next to him.
attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
damage 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
GM Beman |
Just as quickly as they appeared, the beetles are crushed by the onslaught of weapons. Orion retrieves his daggers and, as everyone else wipes their blades clean, you notice that a glow still emanates from the insects.
In the rubbish pile you locate:
Four trade agreements all written in Kelish
A small sack of coins
A set of bronze bracers (anyone have Detect Magic?)
Lorelendral Teklet |
"Sorry, I didn't take that spell today and even if I had, I probably couldn't tell anything about the item from it... it's not something I studied really."
Amnur Roanock |
Amnur eyes shine brightly as he looks at the bracers with barely concealed desire, as the nature of dwarves to obtain well crafted objects fills him. But he waits to see if anyone else lays claim to them before making his own request. Basically if no one else wants them, I'll try them.
He also carefully packs the trade agreements in his pack and quickly counts and adds the sack of coins to his belt. group loot, yay!
Mylvwara Elberion |
How interesting, you use a variant of Lyrian's formulation. I've always struggled with that.
I mutter a few arcane words over the bracers and concentrate on the dweomercraft.
spellcraft: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Shilyn DeSable |
Shifting her mace to her left hand and flexing her wrist a bit trying to loosen it up after using the unfamiliar weapon, Shilyn watches the others going over their finds. Her eyebrow raises a bit as Amnur shoves more documents into his pack and with a shrug, she leans back against the door opening and waits for the others.
GM Beman |
Orion O'Connor |
Hmmm. Those things could have been deadly. I remember seeing a few of those in a battle once. There must have been a few hundred of them, only they were large as a handbasket and being launched from some sort of catapult apparatus.
I tell you this so you don't think that I am bringing the "prototypical badass fighter that has been everyhwere and done everything" to the table. He is actually socially a little awkward. :)
I am willing to make whatever rolls you need me to, whenever it seems appropriate.
Mylvwara Elberion |
"Amnur, they won't do any good for a heavily armoured fellow like yourself. Traditionally, such accoutrements are reserved for who need to keep their movements flowing and elegant."
I pause and peer at Amnur in the flickering light of my spell. After a moment I call the dancing lights to circle around my head.
"In other words, they're not for you; they're for me."
Shilyn DeSable |
Clipping her mace to her belt, Shilyn lets out a soft laugh at Mylv's speech. Reaching back with both hands, she begins to retie her pony tail then casts a glance at Amnur. "Reminds you of a school marm eh?" she says before starting to laugh a bit harder.
Amnur Roanock |
Amnur fidgets at Orion's story, glancing down more than once at the bracers. He's in the process of removing them, slowly of course-- he's above such superstitions, when Mylvwara makes her claim. He stares at her for several moments in the silence before taking a slow breath and responding, "You don't think I'm flowing?" Heaving a sigh he completely removes the bracers and hands them over solemly, and as he turns back to the path ahead of them he mumbles something about 'elegant and flowey elves' and the rest is lost in the dwarfs rumbling voice.
Shilyn DeSable |
Falling into step behind Amnur as he walks past, Shilyn can't help herself. Oh, you're definitely flowing Sir Dwarf of flowiness. Especially a few minutes ago by the fountain," she says laughingly. "Why, I saw you flow down the hall a bit with my own eyes even!"
Finding herself laughing a bit too hard, Shilyn pulls up and leans one hand against the wall, the other holding her side. "Ouch..
Amnur Roanock |
"Common, lets get movin'" Amnur says, and moves into the room the creature came out of, moving east through the room.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 14
Lorelendral Teklet |
Follows behind Amnur and the others, cautiously watchful.
perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Shilyn DeSable |
Regaining her composure after a much needed laugh, Shilyn hurries to catch up with Amnur and falls into step beside him. She unhooks her mace as they walk and in very short order, she's back to scanning the floor and walls in front of them as they go.
perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
GM Beman |
This long, narrow room is choked with webbing. Within the webs are a number of what appear to be small, dead humanoids with dark, scaled skin, each wrapped in a cocoon of sticky webbing.
In the southeast corner of the room sits a giant spider.
Along the edges of the room is thick webbing. Movement through the web-filled squares requires a DC 12 Strength check to move through at half speed. The webs can be cleared by attacking them.
It appears the the spider hasn't noticed you...yet.
Lauranna Stormblessed |
"Oh, great. Spiders. I 'd say burn the webbing and force it to come to us, but in this enclosed space we might choke to death on the smoke." Lauranna shifted her grip on her oversized axe to better prepare to atack.
attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
damage 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Amnur Roanock |
Turning back to look at the others with apology in his eyes, Amnur says, "I can't leave this thing at my back", and clears away the webbing in front of him with a great swing of the axe.
Shilyn DeSable |
Shilyn hooks her mace to her belt and unshoulders her bow. Stepping through the string, she quickly sets the bowstring taught. "Well, you want me to give it a shot?" she asks as she pulls an arrow from her quiver and nocks it.
GM Beman |
I'm going to hold off a bit on resolving this to see what course of action you want to agree on. Engaging the spider is going to happen; the question is how. One of you can either get a leg up (pun intended) by shooting first; otherwise disturbing the web will put us straight into combat.
....and since combat is inevitable:
Initiative
Lore
Orion
Shilyn
Spider
Mylvwara
Lauranna
Amnur
Shilyn: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Amnur: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Mylvwara: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Lauranna: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Orion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Lore: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Spider: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Lorelendral Teklet |
If Lore can move up next to Amnur and get within fifteen feet of the spider, she will send fire at it, hoping to damage both spider and webs. (burning hands)
burning hands dmg: 2d4 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
If she cannot get close enough for burning hands, she will send a bolt of fire in it's direction.
fire bolt, ranged touch to hit: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
fire bolt dmg: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Brayden Green |
I will get the party started, unless Lore has a "me first" move.
I remember fighting these in the swampy marshes of Kalamazoo.
Quickdraws, and throws 2 knives. Moves within 10' range if possible.
knife throwing done right: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
1d4 ⇒ 1 dmg
1d4 ⇒ 3 dmg
Edit: Ninja'd
GM Beman |
I'll shuffle around the marching order some since I set it up pretty arbitrarily, except for Amnur & Shi who stated that they were leading the way. Since Lore just barely beat Orion to the punch we'll give her the surprise round action; and since both Orion's throws hit we'll call that his first round action.
Not willing to wait for the spider to attack her, Lore unleashes a fire bolt at the giant arachnid. The smells of singing spider flesh permeate the room. It is not pleasant. Orion ducks under the fire bolt as he puts himself into a position to bury two daggers into the spider's abdomen.
Spider is a little bit more than half dead, Lore & Shilyn are up before the spider.
Shilyn DeSable |
Shilyn watches as the others begin attacking the huge arachnid and deftly pulls the bow back until her thumb touches the corner of her mouth. Taking a breath, she focuses on the spider and lets the arrow fly..
attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
damage: 1d6 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
and watches as the arrow sinks into its squishy flesh.
Amnur Roanock |
Amnur, seeing the others initiate the attack, decides the prudent thing to do is back out of the room and wait for them to whittle it down. So of course he hefts his trusty waraxe, steps forward and to the side (so as to not impede incoming missiles) and calls out to the large spider. "Common if you dare, yer Bugginess, I've taken craps bigger than you!"
Ready action if spider comes in range.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 and Damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Lorelendral Teklet |
Lore sends another firebolt at the creature before taking a 5' step back to let the fighters pass her. "Take that you ugly beastie.. I hate spiders."
ranged touch firebolt: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
to confirm: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 (I'm assuming that misses)
1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
GM Beman |
mmmm.....grilled spider!
Before the spider can even move into position to attack it is taken down by daggers, arrows & fire. While looking through the webbing you notice two short, humanoid shapes wrapped up; most likely earmarked for spider snacks. At the foot of one of the shapes is a small sack of coins and a white pearl.
Orion O'Connor |
Ooooooh! Shiney!
Orion strides forward and removes 2 blades and wipes them off on his boot.
Does anyone have any skill in poisons? I imagine he has a few drops left in his fangs.
Lorelendral Teklet |
"Oh pretty little thing.. can anyone detect magic?" She holds up the pearl for all to see, and stands ready to hand it over to whoever might be able to detect magic on it. "Anyone want to carry the coins?"
Shilyn DeSable |
Slipping her bow back over her shoulder, Shilyn casually looks to Amnur. "There you go. Since we know we can trust you not to skim off the top," she says with a wink.
She starts to retrieve her arrow from the carcass of the spider, then hesitates. Seeing how far though the squishy insect it's sank, she decides to leave it where it is.
Pulling out her dagger, she thwaps the bottoms of the feet of the wrapped up humanoids with it's flat edge seeing if any of them are still squirming.
hey now! why am I getting blamed? it's not my fault that tavern keeper was short a few coppers!
Lorelendral Teklet |
lol... Lore is just a couple of pounds away from 15' ft move instead of 20, so yeah, she'll let Shi carry the cash - but not unaware of how much is going in that direction lol...
Amnur Roanock |
Amnur moves over to the humanoid bundles as well, tugging at the webbing at their necks to try and see their faces. "What do you think h'elf? These ones still breathing?"
Mylvwara Elberion |
Expertly done.
I smile at my companions and step forward, muttering arcane syllables to cast detect magic over the coins and pearl. That done I will step back and take in the whole corridor, letting my spell cover anything we might have overlooked.
Amnur Roanock |
Once everyone seems ready to move on, Amnur moves towards the portal to the north, checking the portal with his available senses (and letting the others do their own checking as well) before moving into the next room.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 11
