Um'bala scans the hallway and the statue with his magic and detects an ancient magical fire trap here. It might have once been powerful enough to incinerate all of you instantly, but has deteriorated over the last few millennia. If Mach hadn't disabled it, it would have seriously hurt everyone, but probably not killed.

Um'bala raises his eyebrows and gives a low whistle. "Oh. That could have been bad. There was some ancient mystic fire trap here. If we ran afoul of it at Thassilon's height, we probably would have been burnt to cinders. Fortunately, the magics have waned over the passage of time, and Mach seems to have scratched out the correct runes to disperse the magical energies completely. We should be safe."

Milo is as horrified as he was to hear Um'bala's analysis of what might have happened as he is relieved that Mach had dealt with it regardless of whatever its strength might have been nowadays, "Well, done, Mach!

"Say, Um'bala, doesn't that suggest that whomever used this place as a base would've had some sort of thing to indicate to the statue not to fry it? Some sort of pass or something?

"We've seen nothing like that in these ruins have we?"

Nope, although Um'bala could tell you that such traps generally had a passphrase. Some can even detect alignment or race and use that as a passcode of sorts.

"Absolutely correct, Milo!", Um'bala says, relishing the chance to wax about arcane theory. "Whoever placed the spell in the first place undoubtedly gave it safeguards to prevent an accidental triggering. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell what those safeguards are, even if the spell were still active. It could be as simple and insecure as a code phrase as you suggest, but it could also trigger if someone of the wrong race or ethos approached. All in all, we got lucky here."

"At any rate," Um'bala continues, seemingly oblivious that no one is listening to his prattle. "We should probably continue on from here, now that the way is safe. Let us move on!"

"Well, I wasn't thinking in terms of a spoken password, but that does makes sense, I suppose. I was thinking more in terms of something physical -- a broach or ring or some other object that could be worn or born by those with permission to move past this point.

"I no nothing of such matters though. Impressive how sophisticated this magical stuff can be.

"But, yes, shall we be about it?", replies Milo looking Mach specifically.

Standing Bear gives a nod as he gives the grip on his weapon a bit of a twist, the desire to finish what was necessary and move one from this gods forsaken place.

The party continues southward past the room with the disabled trap. The corridor quickly turns right (westward) before opening up into a long hallway. A line of pillars runs down the center of this hall, between which lie the ruined remains of what was once an immense magical laboratory. Crumbled tables, broken stone urns, rusted cauldrons, and ancient fragments of broken glass lie scattered throughout. The northern wall depicts a vast mural of armies of deformed monsters and demons gathering on the shores of a mountainous island. Above, a woman’s face has been carved into the mountaintop, and an immense bridge arches out from just below this woman’s face. Below the mountain, at the end of a side view of a tangled network of caverns, lies a vast underground vault in which an immense monstrosity of tentacles surrounds a central fanged mouth; within the mouth glares an angry red eye.

The room continues past the light of your spells (or Mach's darkvision) to the west and is about 30 feet in diameter from north to south.

Knowledge (geography) DC 20:
The mountain depicted in the mural looks to be Hollow Mountain, now located in the Varisian Gulf on Rivenrake Island.

Knowledge (planes) DC 30:
The tentacled monster in the mural is most likely one of Runelord Alaznist's greatest allies, the nascent demon lord Yamasoth.

Petronicus glances at the murals, but can't make heads or tails of them. "Damned if I know what that's supposed to be. Um'bala, what do you think that this place was for?"

Milo takes a deep, steadying breath and quietly whistles a sound koan to center himself as he takes in the unsettling imagery.

Um'bala processes the contents of the room, and his knowledge of Thassilon to come up with an inescapably horrid revelation. "I regret to inform you that this chamber was used by Alaznist's servants for fleshwarping experiments. That's a bit surprising, though - ever since the Heroes of the Golden Goblin prevented a second Earthfall, we've known the drow to engage in such vile practices, but I can't recall if it was known that Thassilon did the same or not. I also have no idea about the murals - we may wish to copy those down and bring them back to the Lodge for further study."

Milo is not as put-off by the wizard's suggestion of copying the mural as the rogue is, "I think Um'bala means sketch out the imagery within the mural rather than literally copy the thing, which seems like a good idea to me, but I fear I do not have parchment or ink to do so."

"Do you forget who you travel with, Milo?", Um'bala replies with a smirk on his face as he unshoulders his packs. "I am a scholar and a wizard. I never travel without the tools of my trade." Um'bala withdraws an inkpen and a bottle of black liquid, as well as some paper to write upon, and begins sketching the mountain and tentacled maw.

"Well, if you're going to start an art course here, I'll make sure we don't get ambushed," Petronicus remarks with his trademark smarmy smirk. "I'll go check out the far end of this bloody big hall. Somebody stay behind"

Asking Um'bala or Quintus to recast a light spell on his guisarme, he carefully makes his way to the far end of the room, stepping around the larger pieces of debris lying on the ground. As he and his light reach the far end of the hall, you can see that it is quite long, around 120 feet. A corridor continues westward past the end of the room that immediately turns into a staircase heading up, while there's a door in the southeastern corner along the southern wall. He carefully peeks up the staircase and listens to the door (taking 10 on Perception). When he's finished he gives you the "all-clear" sign, but stays near the far end of the room as a guard.

After Mach finds that the door appears to be untrapped, he opens it. The door hasn't been opened in a while, but eventually manages to be moved.

Beyond is a short corridor that immediately turns into a three-way intersection. To the left (the east) the corridor continues straight, turning slight south and then heading further east out of sight.

To the south the hallway turns, there is another another door, and the hallway continues past it around a corner.

To the west, the hallway takes on the look or more natural stone and continues out of sight.

No sounds can be heard coming down any of the branches.

The southern corridor turns to the west and ends in another door, but not before the party checks out the first door in the southeastern corner. After a short inspection that reveals no noise or traps, Petronicus opens the door and finds a small, 20' by 20' room with a door on the far side. Hanging on that door is a small bronze plaque, green with corrosion. On it is written a message in a strange, runic script.

Thassilonian:
Do not leave cages open.

He moves up ahead and takes a look at the door (Take 10 on Perception), trying the handle when he is convinced its not trapped. "Um, this seems to be locked. Anyone have a spare key or lockpick?"

Mach eventually manages to find the right pick to trigger the release, and the door opens with a satisfying "click".

Taking a peak into the room beyond, he sees stone tables lining the sides of this room. Atop them are battered iron cages of various sizes, many of which hold the skeletal remains of various occupants. A number of these have been forcibly wrenched open and lie in ruins.

Four bizarre and disgusting creatures composed of half-formed body parts, stand on two monstrous legs. A mouth full of jagged teeth dominates their bulbous head, and their veins pulse just beneath transparent flesh. They stand between three and four feet in height and immediately turn when the door moves and rush to attack!

Knowledge (dungeoneering) DC 11:
These are fleshdregs: barely sentient waste products of fleshwarping experiments gone wrong.

Knowledge (dungeoneerign) DC 16:
They are immune to mind-effecting spells and have spell resistance.

Their bite can have minor mind-influencing effects.

Um'bala's magical bolt barely misses Petronicus' head and impacts the wall in the chamber beyond. (miss)

Petronicus ducks out of the wizard's way. "Hey, watch where you point that finger. I don't know what in the 9 Hells these are supposed to be. Something the runelords summoned, no doubt!"

Standing Bear moves forward, realizing he won't quite make it, he stands next to the fighter, his weapon at the ready and prepares for any enemy stepping into his threatened area, at which point he will smash them with all his power.
