Milo Bandersnatch |
Since Mach is the one who can see best in the dark, maybe he should be in the #2 spot?
GM BrOp |
Well, your crossbow is currently glowing as bright as a torch, which kind of negates darkvision.
Milo Bandersnatch |
Oh. Sorry... I had to go back and discover Um'bala's gift. (The spell was cast at the bottom of the last page and I missed it.
Once everyone is ready, Milo heads into the tunnel entrance. He keeps his senses peeled and moves carefully.
Assuming these are necessary rolls. If not... nevermind. ;)
Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13
Stealth: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19
GM BrOp |
The party creeps into the tunnel below the ant mound. It is quickly apparent that it was chiseled out of the rock of the Crow using tiny picks and hammers. The tunnel opens up after about 20 feet into a small, irregularly shaped room. As Milo and Mach move around a corner, they can see two mites who have dropped their tools and flee down a side corridor, shrieking in their high-pitched tongue.
Do you want to chase after them? If yes, we'll move into combat rounds.
Mach: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Milo: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Petronicus: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Quintus: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Standing Bear: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13
Um’Bala: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Mites: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Milo Bandersnatch |
Milo shoots his loaded crossbow at one of the fleeing mites Attack Lt. Crossbow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6 and then pursues attacking the one he shot his bolt at with a flying foot in an attempt to trip it up (unless he's felled, then the other), "Sorry to interrupt your work, fellows!"
Trip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
GM BrOp |
GM do I need to roll perception or is he loud enough for Standing Bear to hear from the other end of the tunnel?
Lets assume that all of you know what is going on.
GM BrOp |
Since Milo initiated combat, we'll move into combat rounds.
ROUND 1
Initiative
Milo: 23 (already acted)
Quintus: 16
Petronicus: 15
Standing Bear: 13
Mach: 12
Mites: 11
Um’Bala: 9
remember that we act in blocks, which means that everyone other than Um'Bala can act in any order, then the mites act, then the party again.
map isn't really needed. Only one mite can currently be seen (although Milo and Mach heard more scampering off). Milo shot at the only one any of you have line of effect and sight on.
Quintus Valdemar |
Quintus unleashes some more magic to help take down the mite Milo shot. He calls up some of his bloodlines power to create a small ray of cold that then he fires at the mite hoping to take it down.
ray of frost touch attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2
GM BrOp |
Milo's shot nearly takes the mite down, but Quintus' magical frost freezes him in his tracks. He drops lifelessly to the ground.
Petronicus, SB, and Mach are up.
GM BrOp |
ROUND 2 CONT.
Standing Bear rushes ahead only to see the last mite zipping around a corner and into a larger room that is pitch black where only the barest of details can be seen in the shadowy light of his spell.
Milo Bandersnatch |
Having fired his bolt, Milo reloads his glowing crossbow and follows Standing Bear around the corner. His intention to trip one of the mites was clearly not thought through, but at least they got one of them.
Petronicus Krupt |
Petronicus grumbles and charges ahead, his guisarme held out in front of him.
"Come back here, you little blue faeries!"
He runs around the corner past Standing Bear, following the mites into the darkened room and stops there.
"Dammit, I can't see a thing in here. Milo, Standing Bear, get your light in here!"
A second later, Petronicus screams.
GM BrOp |
Spider bite: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
The party is up!
Just to be clear, there is a door between the room where Um'bala and Quintus still are and the one Petronicus, Mach, and the spider are in. On the map, it looks like a wall, but that's just because there is an open secret door there.
Petronicus Krupt |
"Asmodeus' pierced left nipple, that's a huge spider!" Petronicus yells as he backs up and brings up his polearm to strike at the enormous arachnid. His weapon bounces off the creature's hard hide, and only scratches it.
5'-step to get reach, Petronicus guisarme - 1 Combat Expertise: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 8 - 1 = 17, miss! Guisarme damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 = 8. AC goes to 18 until next turn
Party is up!
Standing Bear, Spirit Speaker |
Standing Bear hearing the spider, speeds towards it. It takes him all of his ability to move to get there! His weapon readied, he is hoping to draw the attention of the spider, but if he fails to do so...he will when he gets a chance to swing.
I realize that will probably provoke...oh well
GM BrOp |
I realize that will probably provoke...oh well
The creature does not have reach, so there is a way of getting to the square without provoking ... and still getting an attack.
Standing Bear, Spirit Speaker |
In that case...
Standing Bear, with the spirit of his Great Grandfather guiding his weapon, brings the heavy hammer down on the spider.
"Go and join your spirits..."
Power Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 1 - 1 = 27
2d6 + 6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 + 3 + 1 = 18
OHHHHHH
Crit: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 1 - 1 = 15
4d6 + 12 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 2) + 12 + 6 + 2 = 32
Milo Bandersnatch |
Milo charges after the Chelaxian, dropping his glowing crossbow once he enters the hallway and drawing his Temple Sword and lunging at the Giant Spider.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
GM BrOp |
ROUND 2-3
Standing Bear strikes a mighty blow against the arachnid, smashing it hard on a soft place in its hide. Crit sadly does not confirm.
Milo dodges in, but his blow goes wide and hits nothing but air, and Um'bala rushes in to aid his allies.
Mach and Quintus are up!
Mach Star |
Round 3: Actions
No Action: 5' step forward (change to Move Action if squeezing still applies)

Mach steps forward, his blades flashing.

Only if Applicable:
Dagger Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

GM BrOp |
ROUND 3 CONT.
Mach's short sword catches on one of the spider's legs and he's able to barely yank it free before landing a minor blow on its abdomen with his dagger.
Damage Taken: Giant spider 20
Quintus is up!
Milo Bandersnatch |
Milo Milo's attack misses, but he noted Standing Bear's impressive blow. With the hopes of helping the Shaman he attempts to aid his next attack by pretending to trip with a loud squeal to hopefully get the spider to move into his friend's attack.
+4 with Helpful Aid to Standing Bear's next attack -- uncertain how to describe what I'm doing here, so pardon the lame copy above!
GM BrOp |
Now surrounded, the spider lunges at the halfling, but he is too quick by half, and ducks under her clumsy bite.
Spider attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14, miss. Bite damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
The party is up!
Mach Star |
Round 4: Actions

Crit Damage?: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Dagger Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Petronicus Krupt |
Petronicus seems to have recovered a bit of his spirit as he steps up onto the stairs and jabs at the giant spider with his polearm. "This is just like the time my uncle and I cornered a bebilith in a dark alley in Kintargo. We took it down with a hundred little blows!"
The guisarme cuts the spider, which hisses at the Chelaxian in response.
Guisarme atack - CE: 1d20 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 8 - 1 = 20, hit! Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 2) + 4 = 8

Round 4: Actions
Full-Round Action: Stab stab stab!Undeterred, Mach continues stabbing!
Mach continues slashing at the giant spider and inflicts another flesh wound.
Short sword attack hits but does not confirm. Damage Taken: Giant spider 35
Standing Bear, Spirit Speaker |
With the help of the halfling, Standing Bear lets our a primal roar and slams his hammer down again. "Look...over...here!" Unfortunately, Standing Bear is more used to working alone. Lonely :(
Power Attack: 1d20 + 7 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 4 - 1 = 28
2d6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 5) + 6 + 3 = 20
GM BrOp |
Standing Bear brings his massive earthbreaker down on the spider's head. With a sound like ice breaking, the head splits open, revealing the arachnid's rather small brain. It pops out and lands between the Shoanti and the halfling while the spider collapses, a mess of twitching legs and mandibles.
The fight is over.
Standing Bear, Spirit Speaker |
Kneeling before the dead creature, he places a hand on the first part of it that is still intact. "Join your ancestors, creature." As he says this, he grips his weapon again and as he lifts it, his Great Grandfather's spirit helps him with the heft, returning to his side to guide his hand in combat once more.
"I believe we still have mites to deal with...but is anyone injured?"
Milo Bandersnatch |
As Standing Bear send the spider's spirit off Milo sends centers himself focusing off the creature's brain laying on the floor between them. "Yes. Quite."
Looking back up and around he smiles, "I am pleased to report that I am well, my friend."
Um'bala |
"I was untouched," the wizard replies quietly. "You all dealt with the creature before I could bring my magics to bear. Fine by me - it means we have more at our disposal once we meet up with the mites and their leaders."
GM BrOp |
As the party is taking stock, another mite approaches from the tunnels from which you just emerged. Unlike the others you have seen, this fae creature strides toward you with an air of arrogant confidence, a strange crown on its head and a long, red cape trailing behind it.
"Are you the heroes I sent for?" it chirps in broken Common.
Milo Bandersnatch |
Milo starts when the King appears and then speaks in Common and then suggests he summoned them. Looking at the others, "Are we?"
GM BrOp |
The mite looks closer at Milo. "You look suspicious. You almost smaller than me! What kind of hero is that?"
Milo Bandersnatch |
"One who just helped kill your spider", replies Milo.
GM BrOp |
The mite shakes his head. "Zuuga no care of spider. Zuuga want Clickylegs." He points a tiny blue digit at Milo. "You! You get Clickylegs! Zuuga command!"
Milo Bandersnatch |
Milo looks blankly back at the King and then turns to the party, "Perhaps Um'bala has another one of those language spells? I think we need a bit more clarity here."
Milo Bandersnatch |
Milo looks blankly back at the King and then turns to the party, "Perhaps you have another one of those language spells, Um'bala? I think we need a bit more clarity here."
Quintus Valdemar |
Quintus isn't sure how to react to this mite, but he assumes it might be better to just play along for right now. "Uhhhh, sure your majesty we will get clickylegs, but first why don't you tell us what clickylegs looks like. Some of us aren't as good at remembering as others."
Diplomacy?: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22
GM BrOp |
The crowned mite gives Standing Bear and Quintus a bewildered look. "What do you mean? Clickylegs is Clickylegs. He pet. He carry me around, but he ran off with my sleeping crown. He big like you. Has six legs. You bring him back, me give you big diamond."
