"I lack money for it, but I would recommend that those of you who can afford it obtain antiplague immediately. Given our wounds it is likely that some of us have contracted ghoul fever. You should also show the head to Sheriff Kaijutsu, and tell her what we found."
Jim Seeker |
Bold was a little fuzzy on post-starting characters' starting gold, so when I built Jim here I just gave him what I though was reasonable adventuring gear. Of course, although approved, Bold stole some of it from me via the goblins.
Rajendra Sastri |
When I asked, GM B said I had L1 starting gold plus a mw appropriate STR composite longbow.
Jim Seeker |
I hope I didn't sound like I was complaining. We have plenty of assets.

Ziebodug Bandmocken |
Sorry, guess I missed that. Since Ziebodug doesn't use weapons (except shuirken and bombs), can he have an Alchemist's Lab instead? Also, I do see 10 +1 durable returning shuriken on the loot sheet - if no one objects, Zie would certainly make use of those! He would also be happy to try and identify those two mystery potions for you.
Other initial purchases would be limited to 3 flasks Acid and 2 Alchemist's fire.
Rajendra Sastri |
So, sell off the armor that no one is going to use and split up the rest, then get some curing and buy things? The shurikens were the only thing that Raj would be interested in, but since he can't flurry with them Zie is the better recipient.
Elena Lovain |
Yeah, we've been lazy and haven't poorly geared up or sold our items. Now is as good a time as any to do so. Any volunteers to do the selling and accounting?
Elena Lovain |
I say we rest the night, warn Ameiko and the others about what we saw, and see how the others do against the possible ghoul fever. We can sell of our items as Raj calculated in the discussion thread, and make any purchases we need. Do we need to buy a party CLW wand?
Rajendra Sastri |
Good idea. And since the Sheriff is right here....
The Vudrani addresses Ameiko. "There was a large infestation of ghouls near the Whisperwood, and they nearly killed us all. Here is the head of one of them. Many of us were injured, so we need to speak with a priest."
Elena Lovain |
"Everyone needs to be aware. There was an infestation of these undead. We are exceedingly lucky to be alive right now, thank the Gods! Some of them have been bitten, so a priest needs to be our very next stop."
Jace Devak |
The bastards had us mostly paralyzed. There was little we could do. They were strung up as scarecrows. Who or what would do that?
Ziebodug Bandmocken |
Raj - there are 10 of them, so why don't we split them?
I assume Zie needs a fort save...
Fort Save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 Ha! this dice roller hates me.
"I am not feeling so good. I would normally put my faith in science rather than religion, but I think a trip to the closest temple might be just what the doctor orders right now..."
Suddenly, Ziebodug looks completely lost in his own head.
I wonder if I could concoct something that prevents ghoul paralysis..
Rajendra Sastri |
Fort save vs. disease: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Second Fort save vs. disease, if needed: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Jace Devak |
Jace looks to the injured. You better? We need to head to Foxglove Manor before any more of those undead are let loose across the countryside.
Jace stands, prepared to leave.
Rajendra Sastri |
Waiting on the reaction from the duly constituted authorities.

GM Bold Strider |
Sorry about the delay.
Ameiko looks at the chattering head of the scareghoul and deigns not to take it. "I don't need... that." she says in response.
"Did you handle the incident?" she asks. "Or is this something that needs the attention of the remnants of the military sent to aid us?"
"Either way, continue with your investigation. I'm sure that you can seek aid from the town. You have won over a few hearts here." she says with a smile.
---
In the morning, the group wakes and the two alchemists begin to feel the effects of the disease as they spike light fevers and their muscles ache.
Con Damage Taken by Zie and Jim: 1d3 ⇒ 1
Dex Damage Taken by Zie and Jim: 1d3 ⇒ 3
Rajendra Sastri |
"This is for you to know, if we do not return. We killed many ghouls, but something called them off, and we do not know who or what did that."
Do we want to wait a day, have Father Zantus cast a few lesser restorations on Jim and Zie, what?
GM Bold Strider |
@Raj: I don't know why you would need to wait a day to cast/buy Lesser Restoration, but without symptoms, I doubt you would want to spend the coin to cast Remove Disease on everyone except Jace on the off chance that they are infected, right?
@Jim: Read the Dice Roll Classification again. You both took 1 Con Damage and you both took 3 Dex Damage.
"So something is controlling the ghouls? I wonder why it chose now to attack the farms..." Ameiko muses aloud with a worried face.
Elena Lovain |
"We need to get these two looked at first and foremost," Elena says, jabbing a thumb at Zie and Jim. "I'm afraid they caught something form those undead. Let's go to Dather Zantus and get them checked out."
Elena wanted to get all the group squared away before deciding g what to do with their next move.
Rajendra Sastri |
There was an elided "or" there--do we wait a day to have Raj (or someone) treat the two fever victims to give them bonuses on their next saves, or have Father Zantus repair the ability damage and set out immediately?
Jim Seeker |
I think we're just going to cure it.
Jim rubs his hands as he descends the stairs, late for breakfast. He seems slow and slightly pale. "I think I should see someone about this. I don't... feel right."

Ziebodug Bandmocken |
I agree - let's see what it will cost to just get a cure.
Ziebodug downs a mixture of chemicals in an attempt to ease his suffering, but it only succeeds in giving him cramps. "Please, let's find someone before we all turn into ghouls..."
Jace Devak |
Yes, Let's get you to the local chapel and see what we can do about your disease. I am afraid that I am very unfamiliar with ghouls and how to cure it myself.
Maybe this will be a good time for me to confess my sins and see if I can atone for my sins against Sandpoint. Jace gulps as he becomes quite nervous.
GM Bold Strider |
Ack. I could have sworn I posted a response to Raj yesterday. I remember typing it...
Basically, you don't know who is infected right away until the present symptoms, even with a heal check. If you want to get precautionary Remove Disease on the whole team save Jace, then you can spend the money for that. Otherwise, you can wait for the symptoms to present, use Lesser Restoration to cure and then use Remove Disease for only those affected.
Also, you can consider Sandpoint to be a town where you can get any spellcasting service up to like 5th level for 10% off without hassle. Same with most low level magic items.
Father Zantus greets you warmly as you enter the temple. "What ails you, slayers of the goblin tribes?" he asks, seeing Jim and Zie wincing with each step.
Rajendra Sastri |
The latter, I think--wait for the disease to present itself, then cures on the ones known to be infected. Jace can cast lesser restoration, which will save us some money.
ETA: One casting of remove disease, with the discount, is 135 gp.
Rajendra Sastri |
"Two of us are suffering from ghoul fever. Elena and I may be, but neither of us are showing symptoms."

Jim Seeker |
Jim raises his hand and waives it faintly. "I'm one of them." He says with a weak smile.
Elena Lovain |
"I was struck by the undead, but I don't feel worse for wear right now. At least that I can tell. Can you figure out if we have it or not, and if so, can you cure it?"
Jace Devak |

Jace hangs back a moment as he waits for Father Zantus to finish with his companions so that he may speak with him alone.
He rubs his hand through his hair. Father, I am conflicted. I have done terrible things in my life. I want to confess and atone for my sins against these people, this town and all of mankind.... His eyes slowly begin to well up.
Father I am having trouble sleeping at night.I shake at the thought of what might have become from the honeyed words of the woman who found me. I thought I was doing good Father. I did! The gods were answering my prayers. How could I have fallen so far,so fast?
GM Bold Strider |
Father Zantus nods as everyone asks him about their diseases, potential or real. "I can cure those afflicted and magically sense if the disease affects the others for a modest donation to the church, of course." he says as he offers the alms box to you.
Diagnose Disease for Elena and Raj. Remove Disease for Jim, Raj and Zie. All at 10% discount.
---
"You seem to be somewhat redeemed as your holy powers are growing once more and the evil inside of you is retreating. Stay on your course to aid the weak and uphold the law and I believe that you will overcome this troubling time and perhaps find solace in something. Your compatriots, perhaps?" he says.
Rajendra Sastri |
That's 18 gp for the diagnoses, and 270 gp for the cures. Total charge 288 gp. I'm good with dividing it up among us, 57 gp 6 sp each.
Elena Lovain |
DM, what level is Zantus? I need to get that to calculate how much I owe for the Diagnose Disease.
Rajendra Sastri |
I calculated based on the minimum level, which may not be appropriate--I assumed he'd have an acolyte do the easy stuff.
Karu the Kobold Strider |
Just assume minimum level for spells.

Jace Devak |
Jace returns from speaking alone with father Zantus as he looks at the wounded. Do you feel better?
Elena Lovain |
Missed your last post, Raj. That sounds like a fair distribution to me. Elena will mark off that amount of gold.
"Well, Father, what's the verdict? Am I going to make it? Am I going to start hungering for brains soon? Tell me the truth. I can take it."
Rajendra Sastri |

Ziebodug mutters "Ugh, I remember that brain eating incident when... er..." He realizes he is speaking out loud, and pretends it didn't happen.
Student dares in med school can be a terrible thing.
Jim Seeker |
I'll deduct that amount. Thanks Raj.
