Elena Lovain |
"Now, don't be rude. We want to help this town. Don't you? If there's murderous undead stalking townsfolk, we need to know everything you know, even if you have to repeat your story just one more time. Got it?"
Rajendra Sastri |
"They might have forgotten something you told them, something they did not think important."

"Fine, but keep this quiet." the man spits at Elena. "I don't need more enemies in town."
"Harker had been "cooking the books" for some time." the man admits. "I never had nothing to do with it, though, but I bet that Harker stashed away quite a lot from skimmin'. Been doin' it years."
"The Scarnettis own the mill and they ain't exactly known for being nice. Bet it was a hit by the Scarnettis, but you didn't hear it from me."
"There. Now you know it wasn't me. Get me out of here." he says to Elena.

"Did anyone else know about Harker skimming the profits? Have the Scarnetti ever used undead that you know of? Because if they have began consorting with he dead, that could be a real problem. I don't see any reason that you have to stay here, but you do need to stay in town in case we need anything else from you!"
Elena tells the others what she knew of the family after taking her leave. "They are ruthless, they have burned mills before. But I haven't heard of them using undead to commit murders before. We definitely need to keep them in mind, though.". She fills the ranger and the other town officials about what she had just been told.
"Ameiko, why do you suspect Vin Vinder?"
Ziebodug Bandmocken |

"Well, I am new to the area, and have never heard of these Scarnettis, but I know the type. Still, I don't think a man, or woman, did what we saw out there. Ain't no amount of money going to make someone do that..."
He thinks for a moment, and then mutters "but then again, sometimes people aren't in control of their actions, so best we pull on every thread until something unravels."
GM Bold Strider |
"I don't know nothing about the Scarnettis and how they kill people. I only know that they do." answers the man, clearly uninterested in talking any more on the subject, lest it get back to Monseigneur Scarnetti.
---
Back with Ameiko, Elena inquires more about Ven Vinder. "He's not a suspect, but he might have information. That was his daughter at the mill. Did you not know that?" Ameiko asks the woman. "Yeah, Ven went crazy when I told him about her death, so I put him in the Sheriff's lockup for the night. Let him out this morning. You might find him down at the Ticklefish Tavern."
Jace Devak |
Hmmm. Yes, Perhaps we should. Jace says as he runs a hand through his hair.
Grabbing his bag Jace follows after Ziebodug. With each step his body shifts on his wounded leg.
Jim Seeker |
"I'm always up for tavern-ing! Is that, uh, is that how you say it? Tavern-ing?" Jim stops to ponder for a moment. "Uh, anyway, let's go."
Elena Lovain |
Ellena nods and follows her fellows to head to the tavern
Rajendra Sastri |
Rajendra follows where they lead, not familiar enough with the tavern's location to find it on his own.
GM Bold Strider |
You head down to the Ticklefish and a man is thrown through a window as you approach.
CRASH!
He lays there, unmoving, as another man yells out of the window. "And stay out, you lousy drunk!"
You move up to him and see that the bloodied man matches the description of the father, but you might need to apply some healing techniques to get him in any condition to answer questions.
Rajendra Sastri |
Rajendra squats down and examines the man with practiced ease.

Elena sighs and shakes her head. This isn't going to be easy. he's nothing but a sot.... She bends down to check in on the drunk and says a few quiet words before touching his arm. A cool wave of healing effects him as she did so.

"This man is drunk! What, make him throw up? Or take him back to the inn and toss him in a cold bath?" Jim asks the others. "I'm generally one to sleep it off, but I'm also not usually involved in ongoing murder investigations." he notes, adding "Usually."

Not sure how many are required
Grabbing the man Jace helps him back to his feet and brushes the dirt and glass from his clothes.
Jim Seeker |
None are required Jace. Elena already healed him, presumably to full HP. What he has right now is a status condition, not a lack of hit points.
Jace Devak |
Ah. That's what I get for reading this late at night :)
Elena Lovain |
"We could always toss him in a cold tub, Jim. I like that idea. It might make him a bit of a grouch, but I'd rather deal with that than waste time waiting for him in sober up..."
Rajendra Sastri |
Rajendra shakes his head. "As drunk as he is, can we believe anything he says? Let's get a wheelbarrow or cart, and take him with us to this scholar Ameiko spoke of. He can sober up while we talk to the scholar, and then when we go to the sanitarium."
Ziebodug Bandmocken |
Ziebodug starts turning pages in small, overstuffed journal, looking for the right recipe
"I could mix him up some go-go juice... I just need to find some tabasco and pickle juice... of course, survival is guaranteed... well, 90%... um, maybe 80%..."
Jace Devak |
Maybe we should take him to one of the nearby churches? Cleanse the alcohol from his blood.
Jim Seeker |
Alchemist's kindness was my first thought, but by RAW he'll be sober by the time I have some made.
"Say Zeebug, I'm sure if we work together we can get that down to 70% no problem." Jim says, smiling and putting his arm around the alchemist dwarf. "In the meantime, let's throw him in a bath."
Elena Lovain |
"Let's do it. A little icy water will sort of sober him right up!"
Elena Lovain |
Elena leads the group toward the closest bathhouse, knowing that might be their best opportunity to dunk the sot back to a somewhat sober outlook.
GM Bold Strider |
The group drags the father to the nearest bathhouse and the men take the sodding drunk to the stalls, pouring him into the spot nearest to the sprayer, turning the water into icy streams as they bathe his face.
---
Elena decides that this is a good time for her to have a soak and uses the women's side, relaxing and washing the grime of the trip from Magnimar.
---
"What... *cough* *spit* .. the f@%#! *cough*" yells the man as the ice water hits his face. He quickly raises his hands to block the water as he grows angry. "How dare you!?" he bellows.
Jim Seeker |
"Jim Seeker, hero and adventurer. It's a pleasure to meet you." Jim says, offering his hand for a friendly shake, but doing so at an awkward angle.
Rajendra Sastri |
Rajendra keeps quiet and just smiles, letting the more charismatic folks do the talking.
Elena Lovain |
Elena happily let her stress wash away from her in the cleansing bath. The boys can handle the easy stuff. I need a minute to myself.
After a good, long soak, she dried herself off, and found a clean set of clothes before returning to the common room. She figured the boys would be along directly after they found out what the man knew.
Jace Devak |
Jace kneels down as he locks eyes with the man and places a calming hand on his shoulder. It is good to meet you Ven. My name is Jace. We have been hired to investigate who did this to your daughter. We want to catch this bastard and make them pay as much as you do. Is there anything at all you can tell us about your daughter that might help us?

"Get the f+~# off me, you goddamn kidnappers!" he bellows before angrily standing up. "You can sod off if you think I'm gonna tell you lot anything." he says, wiping the water from his face and smacking Jace's hand away violently.
Some of the other patrons begin to stare openly at the event and even Elena can hear the ruckus in the ladies' bath.
Ziebodug Bandmocken |
"Sir, I understand the desire to drown your sorrow in a concoction or two. But surely you would like to see justice for your daughter, and we are her to provide that justice. Take a few moments to help us, and then you can get back to getting lost in your drink."
Elena Lovain |
Elena whistles a jaunty tune, and pretends she doesn't hear anything coming from the other room.
Lol!
Rajendra Sastri |
Rajendra offers, "If you like, we will even buy you something to drink, and keep the owners from throwing you out."

You kidnapped the guy, drug him to a bathhouse and doused him with cold water. Even the most amenable people might not be agreeable after this and this guy was definitely not amenable to begin with.
The man scowls as he totters towards the exit, ignoring all of your pleas. "Find whoever you want. My daughter's dead AND found with that sodding Harker boy. Told her she shouldn't be with 'im and now she's dead." he bellows without even looking at you before stumbling through the exit towards the foyer of the bathhouse.
Rajendra Sastri |
He was unconscious and out in the street when we found him--we were trying to get him someplace safe. No kidnapping involved. OTOH, he's not exactly of sound mind atm.
Karu the Kobold Strider |
Sorry. Speaking from his point of view.

Rajendra Sastri |
Rajendra looks after the departing drunk, then turns back to his compatriots. "Well, let's talk to the family of this Harker boy."
Elena Lovain |
Elena watches the man stagger out of the bathhouse, and waits for the boys to come fill her in on how things had went. She guessed things went poorly.
Jace Devak |
Jace holds a hand up to stop Rejendra. Let Ven go. He is grieving and angry. Give him some time. His face grimaces.
I know the pain all too well. Only time will help
Lets go outside and wait for Elena to finish with her bath
Standing up Jace leaves the bathhouse and sees Elena already waiting for them. He shrugs his shoulders. Went about as expected..... we got nothing from him.
Rajendra Sastri |
The Vudrani shakes his head. "We learned that he had warned his daughter about Harker, but that she went with him anyway. Perhaps there is something more to learn about why she did."
Elena Lovain |
"Was she with him or was she with him with him,," Elena asked, stressing the latter half of her question.
Rajendra Sastri |
"Perhaps Harker and she were planning to leave together with the money he stole from the Scarnettis?"
Jim Seeker |
"I've never much cared for politics or sordid love affairs. Or whatever this falls under. It's much more of a gray area than my usual heroics." Jim says with a shrug, finding a place to sit quite unceremoniously and a bit out of place.
