DMBS - Looking at the Fly skill, I only have to make that Fly check when I'm attacked if I'm flying with wings. But it turns out I have to make a DC 15 fly check to take a 5-foot step, since it's less than half my move speed.

Fly, DC 15: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (18) - 3 = 15 Phew!

Mohok zips slightly higher and closer to the harpy who's shot at him, then slashes at her over and over!

5' step forward and up diagonally, altitude is now 45', then full attack!

Yanos old friend, if I'm never heard from again, please see that my tattoo shop (Ink and Paint Club) and ship (The Mermaid's Tail) are taken care of.

You lose sight of Kryssa and the injured harpy in the distance as they head down into the nearby valley and towards a forest.

Mohok deftly flies up to the harpy nearest to him and cuts her down, bisecting her with his falchion as the Physician tends to Yanos' wounds and Pai casts some defensive magicks.

@Yanos: As you can't do the top listed action, I will say you do the bottom listed action. Top listed action has two moves (Stand up and Move) and a Standard (Cast Spell).

Yanos quickly stands up as he casts a healing spell and presses his glowing hand to his chest, curing him of a good portion of the arrow holes that the harpies placed into his chest.

With that, Kryssa and the harpy disappear into the nearby forest as the sound of the harpy's song dissipates from your ears.

As this happens the other harpy curses and sends a grouping of arrows down at Yanos and the Physician.

@Yanos: You are in a clearing in a giant forest where the chapel is slowly being taken back over by vines and the trees are beginning to encroach back towards the building. Kryssa and the harpy have moved back into the forest. You have a general idea of where they went, but Forest Terrain has rules on maximum distance of Perception checks.

Hearing a harpy who is singing seems like it would be DC 0 (conversation) or DC -10 (sounds of battle). It doesn't seem like either, so DC -5 seems about right.

Based on the description, this seems like a Medium or Dense forest, so I will say Medium in favor of the players.

Maximum Perception Distance-2d8x10 feet: 2d8 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7

As she is being a bit louder than normal people, I will let you just listen for some help to guide you, but there will be an additional penalty for being beyond the distance. Since you are 150' away from them and the limit is 70', an additional +10 to the DC seems correct.

Moving 80' into the forest, Yanos stops and listens for the direction of the harpy, but the sounds of the forest ring in his ears, despite trying to single out the singing of the harpy. He hears birds singing and water running, but can't seem to pinpoint the location of his missing compatriot.

Unbeknownst to you, the harpy leads Kryssa deeper into the woods, hoping to find refuge from any followers for her last tasty meal.

@Yanos: If you wish to blindly rush in a direction, then roll a 1d5. If you wish to track, then we can use Survival checks.

Google say that the average tree is 50' tall, so, to fly over trees, anticipate that you are around 60'.

Mohok catches up to Yanos, but he is high above the trees, however this means that the half-orc doesn't even see the man as he scours the forest below, but the foliage is blocking most of his view.

The Hound Archon finds the tracks and Yanos quickly sets after them, moving through the underbrush another 40', however he thinks that this might be slower than the harpy and Kryssa are moving.

Unbeknownst to them, they leave Mohok and Pai behind as those two can't see them from their current locations.

As the Haste wears off, Kryssa is led further into the forest by the harpy, crossing a small stream and leaping over small logs.

Hearing Yanos cry out, Mohok flies out over the trees in the direction of his voice! He shouts, "I'm coming, Yanos! Keep making noise!"

Double move for a total of 80'

DMBS - my intent in going over the trees was that Mohok would be able to move a lot faster since he's not in difficult flying terrain, as Kryssa suggested. The Forest Terrain rules don't address this, but common sense would certainly suggest it's faster to fly above the trees. In any case, Mohok was flying straight after where Yanos entered the forest, and now has his voice to follow, so he should be able to keep track of him to some degree.

As no one can seem to follow the tracks except the Hound Archon, Yanos finds himself limited by the speed of that creature. The Physician keeps up with the summoned creature as Pai begins to fall behind, especially once Blessing of Fervor is cast by Yanos.

I understand the intent. It definitely makes sense to me from my perspective, however I assume the 70' limit to make Perception checks applies to all Perception checks, which means that you are at best 10' away from not being able to even get a chance to perceive Yanos. (This is if you are directly above the man.) With your last Perception check, you definitely can't keep track of where they are.

Pai spots Mohok and the two regroup in the air and keep flying forward, but as this occurs, the trio below begins to veer to the right.

@Pai/Mohok: You need Perception checks.

DMBS - I don't mean to be a pain by questioning everything, but that 70' limit applies to "detecting the nearby presence of others," per the Forest Terrain rules, which does not seem the same as hearing someone shouting to attract attention, or even someone singing.

I'll hold off posting an action until I know what the Perception check tells me.

Isn't detecting someone's presence hearing, seeing, or finding someone else? By saying that you can only detect someone's presence within 70 ft, it is essentially saying that you are undetectable outside of that range, be it from leaves, dense undergrowth, ambient sound, etc. I'd welcome arguments to the contrary but I'm not sure that one holds much weight based on the language used.

The language I quoted above, and which you're referring to to get the 70' limit, comes from the section 'Stealth and Detection in a Forest,' meaning the distance limitation applies to detecting someone who is actively trying to hide, and sets an upper bound on when that is possible due to the terrain, which strikes me as perfectly logical. I don't see the distance limit as a general rule for perceiving things in a forest, regardless of what they are, how loud they are, etc.

Again, I don't want to be an argumentative nuisance, and I appreciate your willingness to discuss this. Having been personally found by a search team in a forest at night simply because we were all shouting, I can say that 70' (or even 180', the upper bound possible in any forest per the quoted rule) is way too small a distance for sound and light to be comprehensively limited. That's the practical aspect of why I think the rules apply to the narrower case of limiting when you can detect someone who is trying to hide, but the more rules-relevant aspect is that those rules fall under 'Stealth and Detection' in the Forest Terrain rules.

I saw three forest spirits. There was a little one and a bigger one and a HUUUUUUGE one that kept falling asleep.

Hmm... you make a good point, but I think that there is a still a limit on how far you can perceive in a forest due to obstacles for sight and ambient noise for sound. If someone is hiding and is absolutely undetectable at 70', then double or triple that is perfectly reasonable, in my mind, as a hard limit on all detection whether the characters are trying to hide or not. Thoughts? I'm thinking halfway at 2.5x the Stealth Detection limit, so 175'.

Kryssa is a large individual (think She-Hulk not normal Hulk) and tromping entranced through the undergrowth with no regard to anything resembling stealth. She's likely often tripping over things, because she's fascinated with something flying in the air above her. Plus, there is said flappy-winged flying creature loudly singing so that I follow her to my demise. I'm pretty sure an okay perception check would notice us coming a hundred yards off.

That seems like a logical approach, though I'm not sure that PFS really allows for creating new rules mechanics like that.

Now, since I might as well be hanged for a sheep as for a lamb: we never really got an answer on the difficult terrain question and Kryssa's movement. You said we'd all be equally hindered, but that's not so, since what hinders movement in forest terrain is the undergrowth, and a couple of us have been flying since the forest chase started. A medium forest has 70% light undergrowth (normal difficult terrain) and 20% heavy undergrowth (doubly difficult terrain), so on average it would take Kryssa 2.3 squares of her movement speed to go one square in the forest. So she should only be 200' into the forest at this point, rather than 470' - which puts her 10' from Yanos and renders the Perception discussion a bit less relevant.

Once again, sorry to argue so. You know me well enough by now, DMBS, to know this is not how I typically approach a game, but I think the mechanics support us being a lot closer to the harpy than we are - and everybody reads the rules more carefully when a PC is about to get eaten.

A blowfly lands on Dr. Vitruvian's eye and begins lapping at the vitreous humor. Barely a few seconds go by before it spontaneously combusts.

First, well, I'm not sure that this is creating a new mechanic. If anything it is taking the (possibly poorly worded) detection limit and expanding it because I agree that 70' is rather tiny to never be able to detect someone outside of it. I'm still not convinced that the stealth part of the title doesn't apply only to "Because any square with undergrowth provides concealment, it's usually easy for a creature to use the Stealth skill in the forest."

That being said, let's see what we got for undergrowth.

Chance for Undergrowth: 1d10 ⇒ 5

Okay, so heavy undergrowth which is four squares of movement per square.

Ok, so it says that forests can have "more sparse terrain at the outer edge of the forest and dense forest at its heart." So, I added the level of terrain at the bottom. This requires the least amount of changes.

Yanos, the Physician and the Hound Archon easily keep track of Kryssa and the harpy due to the trail being left by the pair, however they see that the undergrowth grows much denser just ahead, however they push forward.

40' movement: 10' in regular and 60'/2 for the rest.

Mohok and Pai continue to fly around, listening for the sound of the harpy as the canopy of the forest is getting much more dense as they fly in the direction of the barely audible sound. They quickly reset their course and move back towards the group, actually ending near Yanos and the others.

-20' for being off course and correcting it.

The pair of women trek further into the forest, slowed down immensely by the undergrowth.

Okay, I'm a little confused with what you did with the d10 roll and determining undergrowth presence, but the net result is we're all a lot closer together, which is where I thought we should be. Aaaand it's time for me to shut up and play the game. Thanks for your patience and reasonableness.

Mohok waves to Pai to follow him, then continues to follow the sound of the harpy as he soars over the treetops!

Double move towards harpy song.

Perception, DC -5, -11 Penalty due to distance: 1d20 + 13 - 11 ⇒ (14) + 13 - 11 = 16 Distance penalty might be a bit higher because I'm also 60' up, but I beat the DC by 21, so I should easily be able to hear the harpy singing.

It's a shame I just now remembered that Mohok has a raven animal companion who could have been chasing after Kryssa and friend all this time, might have been handy. I guess I'll call good ol' Poh in from his scavenging after this fight.

Counterpoint - Why is the harpy continuing to run? It has just as little idea that the party is around as the party does of her location.

Incoming mega-post

@Mohok: The penalty for forest terrain is -2 per 10 feet, so -25 after accounting for your height.

@Yanos: You rolled for single move tracking, so you can move 70' along the ground at most. You are already in difficult terrain, so you advance 35' per round.

Perception: 4d20 ⇒ (6, 17, 16, 14) = 53

Mohok loses the voice in the wind as he flies closer, drawing him off course a bit with Pai in tow as Yanos and the Archon lead the Physician through the undergrowth slowly.

The harpy continues to drag Kryssa along, but Mohok quickly finds a lull in the wind and can hear the high notes through the trees.

Mohok and Pai try to fly down through the thick trees when they believe that they are over the harpy

Fly: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Fly: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Mohok skims above the trees, drawing back at the last second, while Pai pierces through the canopy. The gnome sees the harpy and the harpy sees Pai. "Caw!" it growls, contemplating trying to fight the gnome, but decides fleeing is more beneficial.

The harpy stops singing and takes to her wing, flying through the trees with ease as Kryssa shakes her head.

Soon, the Hound Archon disappears and Yanos and the Physician are close enough to see Pai and Kryssa. Shortly after, the various buffs and spells cast to aid the Pathfinders wears off as they exit the forest back towards the empty cathedral.

The party returns to find Dr. Vitruvian's body just where they left him, now surrounded by a sparse outline of discolored insect husks and young toadstools. A whipoorwhill lies on the ground in the corner, apparently having some sort of bad trip. A large millipede crawls out of his medicine bag on their arrival, rears up and looks at them, and hoots like an owl before running off.
