Many adventurers have dared to explore the Mwangi Expanse. Some die, others recover valuable treasures, but almost all of them pass through the walled city of Kibwe. Kibwe is a flourishing center of trade, home to tribal folk from a plethora of races. Humans, elves, and even a few lizardfolk merchants wave to passersby, eager to scam gold from unwary travellers.

You depart for the Mwangi Expanse early in the morning, the mist of the harbor still thick. Karu informs the party. "You are to meet up with a Pathfinder representative named Tuukna at a pavillion on the harbor's edge. You are experienced individuals. I trust you know what to do."

The trip to the Expanse is long and uneventful and, as Karu said, a Mwangi Pathfinder named Tuukna waits beneath the central pavilion just up ahead as you disembark.

“Good to see you, Pathfinders! I bring dire news from the Expanse.” Tuukna gestures to seats on benches beneath the blossoming trees before continuing his story. “I just received word that a band of traveling merchants was found dead after exploring the nearby ruins of the once proud city of Dokeran. Our agents across the Mwangi Expanse claim an eerie song echoes from the ruins, which were previously assumed to be abandoned. We have reason to believe this song was responsible for the destruction of Dokeran decades ago."

Tuukna continues to extrapolate. “If this region is ever going to be a safe place for travelers and explorers, I need you to find out what still lurks within the ruins. Head northwest, toward the rivers flowing out of Lake Ocota. I’ve arranged for you to meet a witch doctor named Nangi along the River Bdonge. This ancient mystic knows Dokeran well. I believe he will be willing to serve as your guide through the ruins. Give him this copper coin and tell him Tuukna sent you."

An edge comes across Tuukna's voice. “Should you come across a physical copy of the song heard from within the ruins—be it sheet music, a cursed instrument, or anything else unusual—return it to your venture-captain immediately. If this song is the fabled Song of Extinction, we may have some hard times ahead of us.”

Song of Extinction? Alright, whatever, lets get this over with.
A tall sinewy man covered in dirty and dented full plate stands up from the bench he had thrown himself on upon arriving. Despite the grime, sweet and nasty scowl covering his face, there is something other worldly and almost serine, about this features and voice. As he snatches up his gear, including a giant sword, a wooden pendent falls from under his armor, though stained with blood it is recognizable to those versed in the divine as a holy symbol of Ragathiel. As soon as he notices it the man grabs it and angrily stuffs it back under his shirt.

Over the past few weeks his traveling companions have grown to know that while overly short tempered, sarcastic, and negative, Nevaeh his also hard working and always ready for lend a hand. He made himself useful on the ship primarily in the galley where he became good friends with the cook. It is in the galley that his demeanor softens and he has even been known to smile.

An angular and stately elf gently strokes the brilliant plumage of his axe beak's long feathered neck as the sun gleams off his polished mithral breastplate, a squire standing quietly by. As he often does, he begins by indulging his vanity. "I, Pasha Halbarad, the Trade Prince of Arbor, Slayer of Aralantryx, Captor of the Spider, Savior of Azlant Ridge, and Defender of Nesting Swallow, am honored to acquire for you this Song of Extinction." He gives a small cough before continuing. "Erm, what is it, precisely?"

"Oh the gods what have I gotten my self into..."

It's a song "Birdy", a magical song. Now lets get going, I'm not getting any fresher in this armor.

If the sarcasm and/or negativity ever gets too much let me know and I'll tone in down. I'm just RPing so I won't take offence if it gets annoying.

Nevaeh looks down at the dwarf with a baffled look on his face. Ah, no I'm good. as he moves away he mutters to himself, A dwarf with soap, now that's a first.

I hear ya 'Jar', though it the humidity that is really getting to me. When I have my oven going my shop back home gets hotter than this, but its a dry heat. Plus the smell of baking bread makes it all worth it, this place just smells like a cross between wet dog and hot dung.

Bah! Navaeh brushes off Hal's comment with a wave of his hand, but slumps back down onto the bench, waiting for the others to finish with their questions.

Tuukna looks puzzled. "You haven't heard about the Song of Extinction? Rumors have swirled for years about it. They say it draws on the power of a dark god to wipe out entire civilizations, but you’ll have to investigate for yourselves to find out if there’s any merit to the stories.”

Do you head out to meet the witch doctor? Or do you have more questions?

The northman washes his face in a small bucket of river water during the brief and pauses to finish drying off. It is clear by his expression that he is mentally working through the tasks ahead. Nearby a large white Lion sits comfortably chewing on large meaty bone, likely a left over from a butchers shop, but to the lion it is a source of contentment - grunts and cracking bone as it gnaws a possible premonition for the future.

"Who were the merchants, and what did they carry? Tell me more of Nangi, and do we know who or what composed the music?" he then continues towelling off.

The Lion, unsurprisingly says little, but stops gnawing as if expecting an answer.

"Grim" he half introduces himself, "...and thats Misfortune" the Lion grunts in response.

The Barbarian is the smart one? We're screwed :D

He has just been traumatized by his last mission, so he is being cautious...

Tuukna strokes his chin before responding to the barbarian's questions. “The merchants
were on an expedition to search for lost treasures in the ruins, but they never made it there. Scouts found the men dead in the swamp, their bodies feathered with arrows. It seems the ruins are occupied again.”

He laughs a little before moving on. “We don't know who composed the song however, it is said that you’ll know it when you hear it—if it’s real, it will chill you to the bone. You must follow the sound to discover its source.”

“You want to know more of Nangi, huh? Witch doctors are rare Mwangi mystics who possess power over nature. He can answer your questions better than I can, especially of himself.”

Grim seems satisfied he has got the last of the water off and grunts acceptance.
"The merchants should have stuck to being merchants, leave exploration and ruins delving to those ready for danger. If its arrows, then its humans or humanoids, an advantage to know now. Reckon we'll know about Nangi soon enough then, never met a mystic who didn't answer a question with more questions". He picks up his blade and pack; On cue, the lion stands up to follow on as well, still clutching the bone is his maw.

Grim half turns to Sterling, "Questions lead to answers, and answers save lives. Questions are cheap, resurrection is expensive"

Misfortune the lion occasionally looks at the axebeak, for no particular reason.

The loud snoring that was coming from the interior of the boat for hours has suddenly ceased. What you all took for just another loud crew memebers comes stumbling into view, kicking empty bottles of booze along the way. After exiting the ship and catching up to the group a stout looking dwarf in black mithril plate stands before you. With his helm up you all can easily recognize the holy symbol of Gorum tattoed on his left cheek. He reaches into his pack and pulls a cigar out before sparking in up.. "I hate dam ships! I hate hot weather too! BAH! This place is insufferable.." He pulls a wand from his pack and gives himself a tap. Endure Elements "Ah, thats better.. Grimnir Foehammer's the name. Sent me here to watch yalls backs I suppose. Let's get moving!"

Before the Pathfinders can meet the witch doctor, they must cross the swamp bordering the River Bdonge. The forest thins and a narrow river is visible ahead. Damp swampland runs along either side of the riverbed.

As the Pathfindres reach the River Bdonge, they are beset upon by an elf and three evil-looking dog beasts. These vile predators have a hide as thick and tough as leather. Wicked ebony quills run from their head, tail, and back.

Yup. Have Misfortune act.

Knowledge(Planes) DC 13:
These monsters are howlers. They have a baying howl that can damage a person's Wisdom.

Knowledge(Planes) DC 18:
The howlers have a unique defense system. They protect themselves with their quills which cause anyone to hit them to be injured by the quills.

Knowledge(Planes) DC 23:
When someone is hit by a quill, it breaks off from the howler and is immediately regenerated. Anyone with a howler quill lodged in their body is sickened until it is removed.

Everyone needs to make a Will Save DC 12 or you take 1 Wisdom Damage, every round while the howlers are up.

Round I

Hal's skin thins slightly and his bones take a greater prominence in his features, giving him a slightly sickly look. (Activating Infiltrator ability to mimic undead for +2 natural armor -- lasts 10 minutes. AC now 30.) He then directs his mount away from the main fight (this draws two AoOs from the howlers) to get a better shot at the archer. "Is it, now?" he says back to Sterling.

Sterling kills the howler in front of him with three arrows and sends the fourth after the elf, lodging it deep in her shoulder.

Naveah charges the southern howler, killing it with a single blow.

Jarlgur attempts to kill the northern howler, but is unsuccessful. He does give it a good dent in its skull. Misfortune, however, finishes off the job and knocks the beast unconscious.

The elf drops the bow, but says nothing to the men.

A quick inspection of the howlers lets the Pathfinders notice silver collars that are engraved with the symbol for Zon-Kuthon.

It appears that most of the local wildlife was scared off by the howlers' gibbering.
