“One of our number has fallen.” Venture-Captain Adril Hestram lets the grave words hang in the air before continuing. It’s difficult to imagine a large man like Adril defeated, but in light of this grim news his shoulders slump; he is a man who suffered a loss. “Targos Min-Katheer, esteemed venture-captain, is dead. His last wishes are simple: he wants his mortal remains to take one last trip along the Silken Way to his home city of Katheer, there to rest with his ancestors. He was one of our finest and we aim to honor his request. It is for this reason I’ve called you all together.” Adril points one sausage-thick finger at the map on the table, tracing a line from Absalom to the mouth of the Pashman River, then snaking up the river to the oasis city of Lopul. “Here is where you can gather up his remains and join the silken caravan, one of the only caravans daring the harsh journey across the desert from Lopul to Katheer. This mission is simple, joyride really, but we insist you give it the attention it deserves. A few weeks in the sun, seeing the sights of the desert. A dream assignment.”

Adril has a way of making every assignment sound like a sweet deal, but the last few weeks traveling by boat up the Pashman River and then hiking the short distance to the oasis city have been grueling to the extreme. A poisonous river snake claimed one of your guides; you remember his last gasps well, and how his face bloated to twice its usual size within seconds of the bite.

Before you now lays Lopul, the great caravan city, erected around the crystal life-giving waters of the Pool of Sihbon, the largest oasis for over one hundred miles. Mud brick houses baking in the sun and great canvas tents crowd the central copse of palm and date trees.

Lopul is a caravan-city ruled by the Sheikh Samraf Al- Hadari, humble servant to the padishah emperor of Kelesh. The settlement’s population fluctuates wildly with the comings and goings of trade caravans, but usually has at least a thousand locals and travelers in residence at any one time. Most of the city is comprised of tents and temporary dwellings erected by merchants and caravan masters, with only about a quarter of the city’s structures being permanently built around the Pool of Sihbon itself. Among these permanent structures are a half-dozen caravanserai, the fortress of the sheikh, and two-score domed dwellings constructed of mud brick. One such dwelling is the former residence of Targos Min-Katheer. All that remains is to collect his body and join the silken caravan.

A joyride and dream assignment huh..... This weather is far from the comfortable climate at the city but this man has deserved the respect for me to sweat for a little while. I should meet up with the others first.. The elf grasps his backpack and bow as he begins to walk off once more.

"Looks like we made it here in one piece. The man chuckles softly. "Well, except for the guide."

He was from somewhere in the north, his accent narrowing it down to Varisia. He introduced himself as Mads, which might have been a northern name, or a nickname. Strange things happened around him. Crazy things. And sometimes he acted a bit crazy himself, hence the confusion about his name. Upon introduction, he claimed an education in magic. He wears no armor, and only carries a rough cane, a crossbow, and a green scorpion he calls Hocus. His clothes were well-tailored, the kind that a person might wear on feastday, or to a funeral, but closer examination revealed a few repaired rips and a a small hole worn on one elbow. The man in the clothes, however, was a striking contrast. He was rarely without some kind of blemish, cut, or bruise, half-healed or bandaged. If the journey to Lopul was any indicator, he was prone to mishap, constantly tripping, knocking his head on things, and generally just a magnet for freak accidents.

A middle-aged shirtless Andoran man explosively gasps for air as he surfaces from a half-body dunk in the camel trough. Panting heavily, he takes another half-minute dive before standing upright and drenched. "Oh that's good!", he says to his Pathfinder companions and pats a thanks to the camel he had shoved out of the way.

Not far after leaving the tail of the river and on towards Lopul a few days ago, Finger began striping off his metal plate armor piece by piece until he was eventually walking half-naked across the desert dragging a clanging tether of clothing, armor, weapon and gear. Now that he is within footsteps of his first destination, he slowly puts himself back together; functional tunic and breeches, hard leather boots, slightly rusty four-mirror armor, equally rusty burganet helmet, large shield, longsword; most noticeably, a surcoat of such age and use that the symbol it once bore remains a barely colored shadow. Once strapped together, he pushes back his stringy black hair, wipes his gruffly common face down to his hawkish nose, hilted mustache and square chin. "Alright, pallbearers, let's take the old boy home."

GMBold probably knows well that I like to play unusual characters. Finger has been on my must make list for some time, his concept is a combination of Knight in Rusty Armor, AD&D 2nd Ed, Order of the Stick Roy Greenhilt; screenplayed by Fred Ward

Jake Hargrove, dressed in the military garb of Andora, simply chuckles briefly at the antics of his fellow Andoran.

Jake stands ramrod straight, and the hilt of a finely-crafted greatsword sticks out above his left shoulder as the massive sword is sheathed upon his back. His bearing is serious and the chuckle that he just emitted obviously come far and few between.

Aye, friends. Let us begin our journey.

After arriving in Lopul, the party hunts down a former residence of the well-known Pathfinder: Targos Min-Katheer. A small mud-brick, domed dwelling lies at the end of a humble, sandy street here in the heart of the caravan city. The scent of the nearby oasis still reaches you, and a hive of bees, attracted by the nearby water, hangs from a date palm next to the house. The wails of mourners and cries of women and children reach your ears, and you can see a small crowd gathered outside the house’s single door, its members crying and tearing their garments. Whether professionally hired mourners or sorrow-filled residents outpouring legitimate grief for the loss of a local hero is unclear, but the emotion seems genuine enough.

Knocking at the front door brings an answer in the form of a man in sackcloth with ashes poured over his freshly shaved head. His face is sickly pale under the coating of ashes, and part of one ear if missing. His hands are wrapped in dirty bandages. You realize that this man is a leper. However, Targos was known for his generosity to the poor and afflicted, so his appearance here is not that surprising.

He allows the party to enter without a word after respectfully moving out of their way to avoid any accidental contact. The front room of the house holds more leper mourners, and a curtained doorway blocks access to the house’s lone bedroom. Shortly after you enter, a man wearing priestly robes and a black jackal death mask emerges from behind the curtain. You notice ashen patches on his hands and a couple missing fingers, indicating that this man also suffers from leprosy, and...

DC 15 Knowledge(Religion):
that the mask is associated with a cult of the deity Lamashtu, demon goddess of madness and monsters.

His voice muffled by the mask, the man introduces himself. I am Ben-Garri, exalted priest of Lamashtu, light in our deformed darkness, mother to all such as us. Ben-Garri waves his hands to include the groups of lepers in the residence. The honored venture-captain’s body is receiving its funeral preparations and you will need to return at nightfall to claim it. The funerary rituals should not be left incomplete for someone as benevolent to Lamshtu's brood as Targos. There is a small hostel and cafe four blocks from here where you may rest from your journey and sample some of the local delicacies. Tell them that Ben-Garri sent you on behalf of Targos Min-Katheer and they will prepare the house special for you. A wonderful braised lamb shank and Qadiran coffee. That is the love that this town had for the great Targos.

Then something elbowed his subconsciousness, or perhaps through a lifetime of soldiering it was inborn to always remember a superior's primary orders, if nothing else. Once the group has left Targos' house, Bevek turns to the others:

Finger waiting for priest's response.

The priest turns and walks to the door, the group seemingly about to head to get the delicious lamb stew. Targos Min-Katheer was a well-respected patron of my church who gave help to many of the deformed and wilted members of Lopul.

The priest sighs from behind his mask in impatience. If you must know the details, his blood is to be drained from his fingers while he wears the mask of the jackal and ravens' feathers are sewn into his arms. The blood will be used to anoint all the members of the church tomorrow at the funeral. Then, we will pledge a sacrifice of bread before a figurine of the brood mother and water will be poured over it. A black dog will carry the figurine to the head of the deceased before the fresh heart of a piglet is placed in his mouth. An incantation must be recited three times. At dusk, the figurine is taken outdoors and buried near the front gate of his residence. Finally, we will strip four pieces of skin from his back. Three will be turned into leather and the fourth will be burned. The remaining three pieces will be used to scribe a copy of the Four Hides of Lawm.

Seeing the blank stares of the Pathfinders, Ben-Garri explains. It is a great honor to be considered for this, but if anyone is deserving, it is Targos. Would you care to watch? It can get quite gruesome for the uninitiated.

One of those was made up by me, one of those is true to Pathfinder Lamasthu and one of those is from the real world Lamashtu. All sound like good funerary rites to me for the deformed princess.

"La mu shu's a god?" He mumbles as the group departs. "Could've sworn it was a Tien dish. Had peanuts in it. Gave me a rash, then I passed out. Tasty though."

Scratching at a bandage, he looks at his fingers and sighs. "Damn. Think I just caught leprosy. Who's hungry?"

"Does he know that?!", Finger finally blurts out, "Listen friend, our orders were to bring all of him back, not ten pints short and skin missing".

Would we be here if we were not called by Targos to attend to his funerary rites? Ben-Garri begins to chastise the fledgling Pathfinder. Your orders are of no consequence when it comes to the wishes of the dead as has been expressed to me by Targos himself. You can wait for the funerary rites to be finished as requested by Targos or I can have one of my assistants fetch the city watch to have you removed from the premises. Just because you are Pathfinders doesn't mean that you can do as you wish. You are not above the law here in Qadira, nor anywhere else on Golarion. Now either quietly wait here or find another place to wait while I finish my task.

Ben-Garri turns and walks back into the room with the body. One of his assistants closes the door.

Fair enough...let's eat.

The party ventures toward the indicated site and sits down to a nice meal of lamb stew. They are provided ample amounts of rice and local vegetables, simmered in lamb stock and fresh herbs. They leisurely wait for the funerary rites to be finished. Some take naps, others recline in the sun with a few pitchers of mint tea. One of the party members remarks Venture-Captain Hestram did say this was a dream job. I'm starting to believe him... Eventually, the sun sets and the party gathers their gear and heads towards Targos Min-Katheer's residence.

They arrive at the residence just after dusk and only a few lepers are by the front gate. They walk inside and notice that the residence seems awfully dark and that there is no sign of Ben-Garri or his leprous assistants. They search the house, but find nothing.
