Falzeal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
As you move down the hallway, Lukas and Jebidiah notice that the walls and floor are covered with a thin sheen of oil.
Lukas Kains |
DM - is the oiled hallway the place we're in on the map, or the hallway leading to the unexplored area?
Lukas Kains |
Ah, thanks. We really need a rogue.
Lukas studies the hallway carefully, trying to figure out the significance of the oil on the walls and floor. He's got no particular background in such things, however, and gets nowhere. "I'm thinking it may make things slippery, I've got an idea." He ties a rope around his waist, then gives the other end to Celes to hold onto. Once secured, he tentatively puts a foot on the oily floor.
If it doesn't go off in some horrible way:
He carefully advances down the hall, his fingers crossed.
GM Bold Strider |
Nighttail laughs before hopping off Hak and grabbing Lukas' rope. As soon as the man is about to round the corner, the kobold yanks him back so he falls on his ass. Everyone around draws weapons, but the kobold responds. "Easy! I'll disarm it. Look up."
As Lukas's eyes refocus, he sees twenty or thirty vials of a substance that is likely alchemist's fire. He was about to be roasted! He quickly retreats and Nighttail draws a dagger. She licks the length of the blade. "For weight..." She launches it through the air and is slices a little seen thread which sends the flasks plummeting to the floor, sending the oil up in smoke. The group jumps back, but the flames seem contained to this one area.
As the group strides boldly through the hallway after the conflagration subsides, they enter the throne room of Roaghaz. Nighttail strides forward, Hak at her side, and speaks boldly to the kobold chief. "Your time is up, Roaghaz. Pledge fealty to me and I may let you live, otherwise you and your brood will die and I will take over regardless."
The kobold snorts as his four guards bristle with their spears. "I should have killed you when I had the chance..."

Lukas gives Nighttail a grateful look and says, "Wow, thanks! That was not what I expected at all!"
When they enter the throne room, it's pretty clear the kobolds are not going to reach a negotiated settlement. Lukas darts across the room and attempts to bring down Roaghaz!

DMBS – acid arrow does not usually add anything to the damage roll, it’s just a straight 2d4. I assume Roaghaz has some ability that adds the extra damage? If not, Lukas would not have been staggered, though the second round of damage would still have knocked him unconscious.
Lukas’s eyes close only briefly, as the acid burns knock him unconscious and Jeb’s healing brings him back. Seeing Roaghaz nearby, he lashes out with his feet, attempting to bring the kobold leader down!

The remaining kobold puts drops his short sword and puts his hands up. Nighttail looks at him and tells him to remember this day.
"Yesss, sir."
She walks over to Roaghaz and shoves her spear through his heart. The blood pools under the body. "Fetch the rest of the brood and get any sleepers up! I want a fealty ceremony as soon as possible!" she bellows.
The remaining kobold nods and bows as he hurries out of the room. Nighttail turns to you. "Take anything you need and the Blood Vow Tribe won't be of any problem for the town. Feel free to come by at any time." she states plainly.
At her insistence, You investigate the room and find two unlocked chests. One chest holds 1,895 gp, and the other holds six large green scales and an even larger black scale. These are clearly dragon scales.

Turning to Nighttail, he says, "Well, I guess that's a fair deal. You just be sure to keep your folk from bothering the town, since that's what we set out to accomplish." Lukas' eyes widen as they find the treasure, and he's even more amazed at the dragon scales. I can't believe she's letting us walk away with this stuff, but I guess she feels she owes us something for freeing her.
With their mission accomplished and a treasure secured, Lukas says to his friends, "Let's get back to town, shall we? I've seen enough of caves for a while."

The battered group trudges back to Devy Manor to report their unorthodox success to Lady Origena. The butler answers the doors and mumbles under his breath about the dirt and blood covering their clothes. "Madam Origena has been expecting you. Though a bath beforehand couldn't have hurt..."
The group commissions Falzeal to be the reteller of the tale, but he is frequently interrupted by Lukas who feels the need to add the smallest detail to each part. The Lady listens to this and worry streaks across her face. "And you trust this... Nighttail? She will keep her word?"

"Well, if you vouch for her, then it is your heads that will roll if there are more attacks!" the Baroness chimes in.
She moves to a roll-top desk and pulls out a bag of coin and the box of promised amethysts. "Take whichever you wish. They should fetch the same amount at market."
You count out the coin and find 1200GP, easily what you could get for those gems from a reputable dealer.
300GP per person!
The lady takes a seat and rings a small copper bell. A servant brings in a tray of tea and offers it to you before leaving quickly, the rest of the tea left behind in the pot. The Baroness begins speaking seemingly talking to you as she looks out the window. "The day after Hunclay perished, word was sent via raven to his only living relative, a cousin in Yanmass. Just this morning, her reply arrived-she doesn't seem all that distraught at his death, and has no interest in coming to Belhaim to claim his estate and belongings." she informs you.
"Instead, she has requested that I auction off all of Hunclay's property and possessions so that any liquid assets remaining be sent to her."
She sighs. "This leaves me with a daunting task-cataloguing the contents of Hunclay's manor home. I would have to enter that lunatic's home or waste men dying in there. Hunclay was one who enjoyed his traps." she muses darkly.
"Even if I could find someone to do it in town, they would never survive. You lot seem handy enough and your deaths won't really matter to anyone here..." she trails off.
"Enter the manor" she speaks up, "and find all the traps, whistles and bamboozles and I will give you a 5,000 GP fee for your trouble. This, of course, will be on his cousin's dime, but it seems like you lot might do with a bit more wealth."
"What do you say?" she asks, finally looking directly at you.
