Nighttail responds to Lukas a bit more in depth. "The Bloodvow farm frogs and turtles for meat. Not as good as a fresh kill, but good enough for these redscales."

Nighttail is a green-scaled kobold if that matters to anyone.

The three adventurers get impaled by the poisonous darts as Celes dives to the side and Hak rears back. "You guys don't have a trapper? And you are invading a kobold den?" She asks incredulously.

"If you're so smart, why didn't you spot it?" Lukas asks testily, concerned about his friends. "Or maybe you knew it was there and wanted us to get hit?"

He turns to his companions and asks, "Are you all okay to keep going?"

I wonder if we should just make a ton of noise and try to bring the kobolds to us, since we'll get picked to bits by traps getting to them...

They must know we ar ehere. But they won't give up their sound tactical plan to do us a favor me thinks...

Nighttail clearly grows bored with this waiting around. "I thought we were going to kill Roaghuz? Have you lost your taste for blood?" the kobold asks the rest of you.

Nodding to Celes, Lukas says, ”Well, if you guys feel up to it, let’s see what’s down that hole.” With a quick glance at Nighttail, he says, ”And before you give us a hard time about it, we can’t see in the dark. Can you take a peek down there and tell us what you see?”

I’m good to go, but I was waiting to see if the weakened ones had any concerns about proceeding.

I’m also not sure I trust our new friend.

DM - any chance Nighttail did as I asked and looked down the hole first?

Lukas turns to Falzeal and says, ”Can you give us a little light down the hole?” Once the way forward is illuminated, Lukas follows Celes through the hole in the floor.

Nighttail laughs at Lukas' offer. "You are the big, brave adventurers. I shall let you lead."

Celes climbs down the rope and, with the knowledge of the room's purpose, begins to make sense of the cavern.

Nighttail shushes Hak and will glare at anyone making noise. "The pools are obviously guarded!"

Thanks Lukas!

Inspecting the room and the bodies, you find the standard fare for the kobolds and two large turtles. Their shells and flesh have turned white, likely from the lack of exposure to the sun.

Nighttail seems to remember something as she points down the hallway to the southeast. "We should visit there first." She moves up to the locked wooden gate and quickly picks the lock. Inside, a large number of weapons have been stashed in neatly ordered stacks and piles in this dry cave.

The tribe's armory consists of Small weapons and armor, including 12 spears, 120 sling bullets, 4 slings, 3 suits of leather armor, 3 wooden shields, 2 bows, and a masterwork Medium cold iron longsword (likely captured long ago and too unwieldy for the kobolds).

---

As you explore in a counter-clockwise fashion, you see a kobold sitting on a single small pallet heaped with furs against the far wall.

"He's the old priest of the tribe before they turned from Vapula." Nighttail comments softly.

As you enter, the kobold's eyes flutter open, revealing only milky white orbs. "I can tell by your scent that you are strangers here. If my nose tells the truth, you bring the destruction I foretold. Good... good." the kobold croaks.

[b]"I had hoped to see our ruin before journeying to the afterworld, but I will settle for listening to it. Beware the great scaly beast, strangers. His seems to speak reason, but his words are poison. And his bats, the ones he calls from the darkness... they are harbingers of lunacy and chaos. Dread Lord Aeteperax will surely be your doom as he has been ours." finishes the wizened kobold before slumping down into his pallet.

Vapula - Knowledge(Religion) DC 20:
Vapula is an infernal duke who watches over the treasures in the Pyrite Vault.

Jalthan was just explaining who Vapula is to his companions when he interrupts himself to answer the elderly kobold with a bow.

"Ahem, yes, good day to you as well! We're... the Doombringers! Indeed. How does that sound for a name?"

Listening to the old kobold, his curiosity is of course piqued. "Who is the Aeteperax? It awfully sounds like a dragon's name, but surely it isn't. A pseudonym, perhaps? A stage name?"

The kobold doesn't respond. He doesn't even act as if Jalthan has said anything.

Lukas looks at the ancient kobold and says, ”It looks like he’s blind, and seems he’s deaf too. How did he know we were here? I guess he smelled us…weird. But he said he’d settle for listening to their ruin. I don’t think we’re going to get much more out of him, anyway.”

DMBS – is he slumped like passed out, or slumped like just sitting back more comfortably? And can you tell the difference with an ancient, blind, maybe deaf, kobold?

With a gentle nudge, he tells Jalthan quietly, ”We’re actually called the Bold Striders, maybe we forgot to tell you. Or are you trying to keep our true identity a secret?”

Upon closer inspection of the kobold, he appears to be dead. His hand is clutching a Phylactery of Faithfulness.
