The Pathfinders find themselves outside the Pathfinder Lodge in Katheer, operated by Venture Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi. A hot desert wind blows their clothing is whirling patterns. The Pathfinder quickly enter the lodge, eager for a cool drink and a quick washing. There are ushered to a waiting room where a Pathfinders offers apologies that the Venture Captain is away, but detailed instructions have been left for them.

Pathfinders,
As the seasons change and the fickle winds alter their course to bring rain to a parched land, so too do the Ten once again turn their eyes toward Qadira and its riches. Sadly, the circumstances are tragic, not celebratory. Trade Princess Zarmina Bahjari, mentor and aunt-by-marriage to the esteemed Trade Prince Aaqir al’Hakam, passed away recently, and the family is holding a wake for her at their estate in Katheer. The trade prince has asked a handful of agents to join him for this event, and I request that you do just that both as a show of solidarity for an important ally of the Society. I understand he also has other work for you that might prove quite lucrative, so as long he does not ask for anything too bizarre, I trust you will honor his requests as you would my own.
I am away on business, but I had another agent retrieve several worthy items from my personal vault. Please take one to offer to the family in the name of the Society and me during the wake.
Be civil,
Venture-Captain Esmayl ibn Qaradi

Left on a table are a silver-chased scimitar, a gold ring bearing three sapphires, and a steel shield bearing an image of Sarenrae painted in gold and studded with garnets.

Male Human (Shoanti) Level 5, #-3

I asked for a mission to the Worldwound, not a delivery mission! [translated from Shoanti] Xûll complains to himself.

"My good man," the tattooed Shoanti calls after the waiter, "If you could perhaps be convincing the chef to be sparing a small mug of precious camel's milk, me would be appreciating it much." Xûll is fully aware of how little milk camel's give, but he did see a sturdy Camel matron tethered out back near the kitchen door.

"Well friends," the enormous barbarian turns to the assembled Pathfinders, "Me is Xûll the Outcast. Me is being Shoanti trader-cum-Pathfinder. Me is decent warrior, if being sometimes a little angry during battles - me is having tendency to be killing foes in single blows when is perhaps best to be letting foes live to be wagging of tongues.

"So, Holy-Druid-Sun-Desin, I am to be knowing. Who are the rest of you being?"

"Don't let Xull fool you with his modesty," The aging druid says after Xull speaks. "But I get ahead of myself. I am Sun Desin, and as much as Xull insists, I am not that holy of a Druid." Sun says, rubbing his well shined bald head with one hand out of habit as his speaks.

Arthrax listens to Xull's words, his head cocking to the side, amusement lighting up his face. "Well...that's what the priests are for, am I right? Can't really be pulling punches in a frantic melee, or you'll feel a dagger in your ribs."

He turns his attention to Sun. "Arthrax. Good to hear...don't really like hearing all that holier than thou bullshit anyway."

The warrior looks at the three potential gifts, shaking his head ruefully. "I just got back from the desert...I was hoping for somewhere a bit cooler. Oh well, let's see here. How about this shield? These southerners love their sun god."

A slender but well-muscled man enters the room. He scans the assembled Pathfinders with piercing green eyes before smiling as he spies Xûll, "Forgive me, friend... Xûll, isn't it?"

The Shoanti simply nods, "I'm afraid that Paracountess Zarta Dralneen says that she has... other uses for quote 'a big, well-muscled, untamed Shoanti ball of rage such as you'. Whatever she means by that, I'll have to let you discover. She awaits you at her Absalom townhouse, in the Ivy District. If you see him, tell her imp Kreuvus that Methodios says 'hi'. Then duck. He's an ill-tempered little bastard, that one."

As Xûll says his goodbyes and departs, Methodios sits down, "Oh, the Paracountess said that I should take his place. She said that the quote 'preening Venture-Captain' ibn Qaradi could use some help now that she's taken his pet barbarian away. Is it just me, or is she way to familiar when it comes to male (and sometimes female) Pathfinders?"

The man, clearly Chelaxian from his accent, reads over the note and puts it back down on the table, "All seems pretty clear. Oh, and my name is Methodios by the way! From Cheliax. I'm an... erm... urban ranger... of sorts. Pleasure to meet all of you!"

"Certainly. A pleasure, good man!" He puts his hand out for a meaty shake with Methodios. He grins when the man mentions the Paracountess. Arthrax had never met the woman, but her reputation was well-known.

"If only Madame Masque had had the same reservations, or lack thereof. Or been real, now that I remember." He sighs at the memory, before returning his thought to the present. "Hey, where's the beer?"

Arthrax shakes his head vigorously. "I know nothing. If you had asked me five minutes ago what a Trade Princess was, my answer probably would have been much more vulgar than it is now."

"The woods, eh? Isn't that where they make the best spirits? Or the most potent? Well, one and the same, really."

"Woods? You're welcome to 'em, Sun. I prefer cities - like this one. Except, not this one. To think I left Cheliax to get away from the Summer. Does this Pathfinder Society delight in sending agents to the hottest climbs of Golarion?" Methodios complains half-heartedly, "Just once, I'd like for them to say 'Methodios, dear boy, please sail to Northern Varisia for your next mission'. Even Irrisen and its ice bìtches would be a welcome relief."

Grinning, Methodios helps himself to some figs and dates, wolfing them down and then enjoying a pull from his own personal wineskin. Seconds later he spits it out all over the Venture-Captains desk, "F*cking desert heat... it's turned!"

There is a knock on the door, and soon after a head appears in the doorway. "Uh, hello... I am in the right place, I think? I hope I am not terribly late." says the newcomer, who is a young man of unmistakably Varisian origin. Flustered, the man enters the room, rolling the sleeves of his robe in an effort to cool down a bit. After him, a raven flies into the room, circling in the air a few times before landing onto a back of a chair.

"Now behave, you stupid bird" the man whispers to the bird, loud enough for everyone to hear. Then he turns to the other Pathfinders, and bows nervously. "Uh, my name is Tiberius. I am a.. a.. student of magical arts. I joined the Society not too long ago. And this is ah.. my very first mission... Nice to meet you all."

A man with a light teal skin, long teal hair tied back in a pony tail, and piercing limpid blue eyes walks in. Even more noticeable than his skin tone is his fin-like ears and webbed hands. He is clearly something other than pure human.

The piercing look lasts only a moment, as a mischievous twinkle appears in his eye, as he takes off his foppish hat and takes a deep, theatrical bow. "Z'hor'll B'bblebr'x, at your service! Let us not grieve too strongly, I am sure the woman led a long, and profitable, life, and her ceremony will be one celebrating that." Seeing that this didn't lighten the mood in the room, with another sparkle, he walks towards the dour looking Chelaxian, hand outstretched, offering a hand-shake when he suddenly trips! But he rolls through it with a flourish, ending up shaking the hand of slayer without his leave.

As the undine lets go, Methodios lets out a shocked exclamation, as he realizes his hand is encased in ice!

Then he friend his attention to the mission assignment and the gifts, rubbing his chin while studying them. "Now, what would be a appropriate gift for a deceased Trade Princess," he says, half asking the others, half thinking around.

As Z'hor'll casts his spell, all the objects on the table glow with a faint magical aura.

Will need a Spellcraft check if you want to determine what they are.

Tiberius thinks about what funerary customs he would encounter in a diverse and bustling city like Katheer, but he only remembers odd details like although funerals start off as a somber affair, the mood tends to lighten as the sun rises and the gathered tell stories about the deceased.

Done and done, shield it is. By the way Arthrax, very slimming on you :)

The Pathfinders leave the lodge at Katheer and begin the trek to the Bahjari Manor which is located on the outskirts of Katheer. On he way the Pathfinders pass many sub-bazzars, which in the Qadria marketplace is like no other. As the hot sun bakes on them, they can smell the smells from exotic spices, mixed with the wafting smells of camel dung. This aroma creates a odd mixture of tasty and revolting all in a breath that seems disconcerting to the Pathfinders. Camel pens line the streets along with sub-bazaars of the Great Marketplace. The Pathfinders see just about every race Golarion has to offer.

Before long, the Bahjari Compound greets them, where its halfdozen buildings have ample space to sprawl across the family’s land. The largest building is the manor house, a two-story structure made of whitewashed stucco over stone. The home has several wings that fan out through well-maintained gardens to accommodate visiting merchants and other businesspeople. Most of its ceilings are 10 feet high, and the doors are made of strong wood. The entire manor is furnished, though the spacious rooms sometimes make the interior seem rather empty compared to that of a typical Absalom townhouse. The large double doors stand open, and the Pathfinders step into a small army of Zarmina’s family servants. These servants stand ready for any immediate needs of the Pathfinders with wash bowls, towels, light refreshments, and trays of fruits and cheeses.

The Pathfinders are quickly ushered to a study where the find the lithe Trade Prince Aaqir al’Hakam.

Dressed in a white linen robe tied with a silk sash, Trade Prince Aaqir al’Hakam stands behind a desk in this small study. He spreads his arms wide in welcome, though his face speaks to his fatigue and grief.

“You are a welcome sight, Pathfinders, and I trust you are here at the behest of the esteemed Esmayl ibn Qaradi. As you can tell, this is not a day to uncover fresh secrets. Rather, it is one of mourning for Zarmina Bahjari—a noble trade princess, my mentor, and the reason I ever became a trade prince. I am here to see to her estate, act as executor of her will, and carry on her commercial interests. It may seem strange to engage in business during so somber an occasion, but trade happens quickly in Qadira; my late aunt by marriage would actually be disappointed were I not to wrangle her vulture-like competitors into submission. Even so, it would be unseemly for a member of Zarmina’s family to conduct business at her wake. Though I have inherited much from my mentor, I do not intend to sit idly and live off her successes. It is still my intention to strengthen trade routes with throughout the Inner Sea while making the Pathfinder Society my chief ally. I want you to stand as an example of what we have to gain by continuing to work with the western nations. For that reason, I requested the Society’s aid because we have only a brief window of opportunity to speak with our rivals and convince them instead to become our allies. There are five in particular that I would benefit from your attention, and I understand several of them maintain their own rivalries with one another. Win over as many as you can, and I shall speak with them afterward to negotiate any details. Is that agreeable?”

"It sounds like Doritannia Raffella is someone that we can definitely work with... she could use a trade ally such as ourselves. I also think that we should be able to work with Pellius Melkior... someone who wants to expand his trade contacts would be a worthy ally as well."

Tiberius shrugs and spreads his arms In reply to the undine's concerned look. "I only know the Sczarni way of conducting business," he says innocently. "But we'll manage."

"Of these rivals... Can some of them just ... disappear, should our talks not go smoothly? " he asks the Trade Prince, and turns to pick up a glass of juice from a passing servant.

Arthrax's eyes bulge at Tiberius' statement, and he quickly grabs the nearest alcoholic beverage and tosses it back. What had he gotten himself into with this group?

Hearing the murderous pair of Pathfinders so openly express the desire to kill makes even the worldly Trade Prince wince uncomfortably.

"Seems that Venture Captain Esmayl has faith in your abilities. I pray Sarenrae he is right."

The door to the study quietly opens and the most unremarkable man the Pathfinders have ever seen silently walks in. The man is of average height, average build, plain features, and plain clothing though clean and well maintained. He pads over to Aaqir and whispers in his ear.

"Pathfinders, this is my Mulāzim, Ghawth. He has just reminded me that our guests are arriving. To make the introductions go more smoothly" he glances at Methodios and Tiberius, "Ghawth here will stay with you and give you a little, ah, information on each merchant. He can also answer some questions you might have about them. I trust him completely, so you should also."

"There are many matters than I need to attend to, but I wanted to make sure you understand fully what will occur tonight before I depart.

So Z'hor'll you probably know this, but once dusk is upon us you all will have a chance to present a gift to my Aunt, you did bring a gift I hope? Something suitable for the occasion? Something my aunt may take with her to the grave? He sees the shield and exhales sharply. "Excellent choice. Then we will honor her with speeches of her accomplishments, attempt to comfort the living, and remind those present to make the world a better place. You might also want to consider using that time to help strengthen your growing ties with the merchants."

Relectuantly, he nods at Methodios. "You must have incredible contacts here in Katheer. You seem to know most of what I am telling the others, mayhaps you will be successful yet. One of the less common practices is to let the deceased, forgive my vulgarity, but we let my dear aunt dry in the sun a bit. During this time, loved ones watch over her body to make sure that no scavengers desecrate her. I also have a cleric of Pharasma here to perform some minor magics that will help preserve her."

Are there other questions I can answer before I must depart?

The warrior rubs his chin for a moment, then holds his hand up as though he is in class. After a moment, he remembers himself, and simply asks, "Maybe this is a silly question...but if you had to choose, which merchant would you prefer an alliance with. So we can prioritize, ya know."

Sun, lost in thought until now, speaks up once Arthrax asks about priorities. "With the exception of Katheer being in this location on the map, I am afraid I am not familiar with this illustrious city as much as I should be. Should we need help convincing the potential allies of the advantage of this union, could you direct us to some of the more business savvy locations to conduct the influence in? Wine and dine seems to be the more common ways, and effective ways, into a man's heart. With the exception of through his chest that is. I never did understand that saying..." Sun says, trailing off as the train of thought leads him down another mind puzzle.

After ignoring Z'orh'll almost completely, Sun looks directly at him as if hearing him for the first time, the train of thought derailing about mea's hearts and chests. "I think what I know about Passad and Metella would be better discussed once we leave take our leave. That way we don't interrupt our gracious host any longer than he needs to be.

"Heh. Got some juicy information, do you, Sun? Well, sounds grand then," Methodios looks back over to the Trade Prince, "Thank you Venture-Captain al'Hakam. Burial practices are actually one of my interests. It is always jolly to know what happens to one's victims. In any case, it has been a pleasure, and we will do our utmost to further the Society's interests during this exchange.

"I pray that you do not take my jests about killing to heart," Methodios adds as a wise afterthought, "I perhaps have spent a little too much time with Venture-Captain Dralneen."

As al'Hakam departs, Methodios leans over to hear what Sun has to say about these two mercantile dandies.

Once Al'Hakam departs

"Well, nothing is really important and juicy. But better to let everybody think we know more than we do I suppose. But that boat has sailed, Ghawth is still here. Perhaps he would be willing to chime in with the details.

Passad is ridiculously wealthy and has a huge network of contacts in the inner seas. Seems to be a cloak and dagger type of guy. The pathfinders had a falling out with him a while back, but it seems like that has resolved itself. Metella on the other hand is a no-nonsense woman. She holds particular sway with her mountain brethren. Not to mention I think she could kick my butt one on one. When I last met them, our group had decided to side more with Metella than Passad. I am sure that they both will recognize me, but I will try to leave the past out of it. Old wounds and all might be too fresh on Passad's end."

Before departing,

"Ah now we speak my language. One does not become a Trade Prince by settling. Before me are five very valuable jewels. The ordinary man, the one with minor goals and aspirations, he is happy to receive one. A Trade Prince weeps from the depths of his soul that he lost four. Do your best to secure as many partnerships as you can.

You all have my gratitude. May Sarenrae smile upon your endeavors."
With a shallow bow, he departs the room.

If you want to check out the merchants descriptions here or look at the Google doc I made here, please feel free. I am going to take this slower since Sun will be AFK.

Arthrax waits for the Trade Prince to leave, then grumbles, "Might be a lot of weeping going on then, with this lot."

He turns to Sun. "Looks like you know Passad and Metella, and Jaktir was the other influential one. You think you have an accord with Metella, then? Maybe you can speak with her while we try to work on Passad."

The warrior turns to Ghawth, "Ghawth! There's a good lad. What can you tell us about these merchants? Any particular desires, things we should know, what makes them tick, you get me?"

"From the sounds of things, this Jakti al'Awar is my kind of target," Methodios glances around, "I mean, trade partner. Finding out about people is what I do. If you can get him to talk, I think I'll be able to figure out if he's lying or not and see what's really going on."

While waiting, Methodios sharpens his enormous battle axe. The sound of his whetstone against the cold-iron blade forms a rhythmic pattern and he begins to hum in time to his ministrations.

"Sun, if you've already had positive dealings with Metella, perhaps we work with her instead of with Temal. It seems to me that we could get everyone except Temal on our side... at least at this time."

Addressing Arthrax, "Rather than bore all of you with a lecture, once you decide who you would like to address I will guide you to the merchant, give you a brief run down of what they do, and what they are interested in, and then let you, well, do whatever it is your are supposed to do. Guests should be arriving shortly. The Estate is open to you should you wish to have a look around, but the more time you spend with the merchants, the better chance you will have to make your case that entering a trade Partnership with the Prince will be a great idea."

The Pathfinders are amazied at how boring this short speech was. It takes all of Methodios's effort not to split his own skull with the axe he is sharpening, Sun has fallen asleep after a few head bobs, Tiberius has ceased to hide his yawns, exhaling sharply as he exhale, Arthrax wished he was anywhere other than here, silently cursing asking the man a questions, all while Z'hor'll sits stoically, focusing as best he can on the Kelshite's instructions.
