Having rested up and in Gwernach's case a sizeable snack later, you make your way to see Kroft. It's early afternoon and you reflect that it's been a few weeks since Eodred II’s death and you've been kept very busy.

Time never works for me in APs...

Finally things seem to be starting to get back to normal in Korvosa. Yet still, as you make your way through the streets, you still sense unrest. Crime seems to be on the rise, as you hear that pickpocketings, robberies, and assaults are skyrocketing.

Some still hiss “usurper” and “murdering harlot” at the mere utterance of Ileosa’s name, and more shockingly, rumors that the king’s death was not of natural causes are increasing. The most popular rumour is that someone poisoned the king.

You reach Kroft's office and she immediately clears her diary to see you.

"I hear you've been busy, too busy to see me?" She smiles and you know there's no malice in her voice.

"Good work - unoficially of course. I for one am pleased that wretch and his shiver lab now rest at the bottom of the docks. Of course, I understand Blackjack was responsible." She gives a conspiratorial wink.

"Anyway, back to business." It's at this point she notices the pseudodragon on Eltanin's shoulder. To her credit, she continues with only the briefest of pauses.

"You’ve doubtless heard the stories that the king’s killer has been named. No? Oh yes, you've been busy. Trinia Sabor is the name we've been given. But I know there’s something more going on here, I’m afraid."

"Queen Ileosa could have quietly had this Trinia Sabor arrested at any time, yet the way in which she revealed the information to the city seems to me like she wants the riots to come back. Certainly, with the mob and the Hellknights out on the street, the girl doesn’t stand a chance at a trial — they’ll lynch her the moment they find her. And yes, I said the Hellknights are now involved."

"And even if she did kill the king, mob justice isn’t the way. Worse, if she’s innocent, the real killer can use this distraction to throw us off the trail forever."

“Before Trinia is executed, we need to be absolutely sure she did this thing. And that means we need to catch her before the mob. We know where she lives — a flat in Midland at 42 Moon Street — but soon, so will the mob. The Hellknights don’t seem to care as much about catching her as they do about containing the mob — something about the 'order of law' makes it a greater priority for them to contain than a possible assassin. I can’t say I disagree completely, but the problem is, the Hellknights are only making it worse. The mob’s covering most of Midland now, and Trinia’s flat is near the middle of the mess. I’ve got all available guards at work keeping things from getting any worse but if I were to send them into Midland, they’d trigger a riot."

“I’m sure you can see where this is going. I need you to get into Midland, find Trinia, and bring her back to me so we can deliver her, safe and sound, to somewhere where she can be interrogated — preferably with magic, so we can be absolutely sure about her role in Eodred’s death. Get in there, catch her, and get out without letting the mob get its hands on her. I’ll have agents and officers nearby. If you can get her to one of them, we’ll be in the clear. Any questions?”

"So Her Majesty has named this woman... how exactly did she reveal her identity?" Callie uses "her majesty" as a reflexive and automatic means of referring to royalty; while there is no tone of disdain in her voice when she says it, neither is there a tone of respect.

"What else do you know about this girl? Rumors have said the king was poisoned, is that what she was accused of? In the worst case scenario, should we prepare to be attacked with poison likewise?"

"Also the usual--what does she look like, and so on?"

Callie:

You have heard of Trinia Sabor. She is a local artist who painted a portrait of the king (only two weeks before his death). She is - by all accounts - young, pretty and an excellent artist.

Kroft offers, "It seems eye-witness have provided accounts of Trinia behaving oddly during her regular trips to the Castle. One of the queen's guards has confessed that he was part of the young painter’s plot and saw her slipping a specially prepared poison powder into Eodred’s tea the night he took ill and her portrait of him was completed."

Kroft is barely able to supress the sarcasm from her voice as she continues. "Of course the guard then committed suicide by leaping from one of the towers of Castle Korvosa."

"Oh, that's right, she was the woman commissioned to paint the king. At her age, with her skill... getting commissions like that would earn her great wealth... it would be nothing, indeed, but suicide on many levels to sacrifice that on an attempt to kill the king. Although wealth and prestige isn't everything, certainly--maybe she did something she thought was worth making a sacrifice for."

She nods. "Well, as you suggest, it's certainly worth getting this woman out of the hands of mob justice, and see what her side of the story is. Sounds like the sooner, the better. Sorry we couldn't get her sooner ourselves, we had other damsels in distress to consider." Callie turns to the group. "Well, what say you all?"

Bloody hell knights. Roran shakes his head. "Those types always miss what's truly important." He folds his arms and nods. "Seems pretty straightforward to me. I like the approach."

Listening to Kroft's explanation of their next job, Wilthorn's face as clearly marked with a look of concern. "Suicide? Shortly after giving a name... eesh." He shakes his head, thinking the situation over.

So, the queen's riling up a mob... but why? The guard almost has the city back under control, why undo that now? What does she gain by causing unrest? It certainly gets the people together for a witch hunt, and I suppose pulling attention of herself would be to her advantage right now. Getting them together, siding on the honor of the late king, against the painter, putting the queen in good graces for now, a kinda friend-of-my-enemy status.

Looking up from his thoughts, Wilthorn asks "Do you know anything about the building this Sabor lives in? Any way we might be able to sneak in our out of to draw less attention?"

Kroft looks to Wilthorn. "I'm not familiar myself but I'm led to believe that it's relatively easy to enter Midland if you take pains to avoid the main streets."

Satisfied it won't fall off, the dwarf looks up and happens to see Eltanin and the party's newly acquired companion perched on her shoulder. Snickering quietly to himself at the uncanny coincidence he waits patiently for the party.

I presume you won't mind...

AOnce or twice you need to take detours to avoid crowds of angry mobs or Order of the Nail patrols but regardless you make good progress.

You soon arrive at the tenement in which Trinia is said to live. You find the place in a densely built section of the city, a place where, at ground level, direct sunlight is a rarity.

Above, jury-rigged catwalks, overhanging roofs, lines of laundry, and homemade bridges of rope and boards create a cluttered tangle, a multi-level mess of gutters, upper floors, and rooftops.

This is the slum above — a place known as the Shingles. In many ways, the Shingles is like its own sub-ward of the city of Korvosa. Here, in shanties built atop roofs, on the upper floors of otherwise abandoned tenements, and amid jungles of chimneys, peaked roofs, and eroding gargoyles, are vagabonds, thieves, monsters, and perils to match those found in the most dangerous slums. Stirges haunt gutters here, as do nests of imps. Pseudodragons lair here too, although in their frenzy to keep the imp population under control, the little dragons often cause nearly as many problems as do the tiny outsiders. Criminals use the Shingles as a highway to move about unseen by the guard.

Worst of all are the chokers, hideous aberrations with long boneless arms who have taken to the Shingles with a tenacious fecundity that has resisted all attempts to date at eradication. Stories of chokers wending arms down through chimneys or upper windows are common, and serve as the primary reason most citizens avoid climbing above the
second floor in regions the Shingles overshadow.

This is where Trinia lives, and this is precisely why the mob hasn’t found her yet.

Trinia’s home is in an old tenement, three floors high and containing two dozen flats, many of which are homes to artists, singers, students of the university, and other craftsmen.

Besides, the way it's built, if you tried to knock down one section, it'd probably take the whole block with it in a very bad way."

To Gwernach, Callie replies, "We just need to find her tenement, and see if it's better accessed from here or via stairs or a ladder. Callie is aware that people tend to look out for each other in this part of town - it's the only way to survive. And a casual glance suggests there are one or two look-outs trying to look inconspicuous. This suggests she's still at home.

Just to clarify, the window exits the room on the third floor - and exits onto the rooftops. Someone could observe it from street level but not 'cover' it unless they climbed up a two-storey building. I'll pause in case that was your intention and you nominate someone to get up there. Use standard checks for climbing walls - there's nothing to help you unless you've brought something.

"Miss Sabor. We are your only chance of safety. We will come in any way we have to, because we have a job to do, so this is your chance to open the door and keep things easy for both of us."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

Even as she speaks, however, she thinks but no one ever just makes it easy for themselves, do they?, so she pulls a crowbar out of her backpack and hands it to Roran, muttering to him, "If she doesn't answer. Little less scary than a sword."

Eltanin:

'She's climbing out of the window'

Callie's words spound sincere but once more there is no response.

I have Eltanin on the ground - outside. Wilthorn and Valeria are clmbing up the building to the roofs of the two story buildings and the remainder are outside the door, inside the three storey building

Female Half-Elf Alchemist lvl 3

You called me right.

Eltanin dashes inside, running up one flight before speaking loudly (but not at a complete shout) "Callie! She's headed out the window!"

Ellie heads back to ground level. Not being much of a climber, she figures she can probably make better time if she just follows Majenko's directions from the ground.

The two climbing the building hear Eltanin's shouts too and redouble their efforts to reach the roof.
