Quill nods at Sanders' declaration that the place seems to be clear, looking around for a place to make camp.

"Storn, maybe you can drag the hag away while I escort the captive to freedom? We'll sleep here...I feel really weak."

After (probably not) escorting Deiter to freedom, Quill will come back and heal himself as best he can before making camp, taking his turn at watch, and grumping about how tired he is.

Storn, whose limbs are currently made of noodles, gives Quill a withering stare.

"You showed yourself as a brave warrior, and Gorum is proud," he rasps. "But that hag stole my strength. I can't even lift my damn helmet."

Saying nothing, he laboriously manages to extract his bedroll from his backpack before he crawls in to die for the evening.

After resting to recuperate, Storn wakes up early to memorize his spells for the day and pray to Gorum to return his mighty strength.

The man looks incredibly relieved to see the hag fall dead. "Thank Gorum!" He hefts his sword to his shoulder and heaves a sigh. "Thank you, as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help. I am Dieter." He shakes hands with anyone willing.

"I was part of a mercenary band consisting mostly of dwarves, searching the swamp for a dwarven tomb -- the ancestor of the brother and sister leader of the group. What we found, instead, was a clearing with a dozen standing stones, and a central menhor. Menhar? Menhir? Menhir, that's the one. We were camped at the clearing a week or so ago when our group was ambushed by a coven of hags and a pair of giants. We put up a terrific fight, killing the giant and two of the hags. Several of our group were also killed, and the madness spells that the hags cast into the group sent the brother and sister howling mad into the swamp. The rest of the team was captured, and the remaining hag led the prisoners into here. She mentioned a 'Vault of Thorns.'" His smile fades and his face turns hard. "She has been sacrificing us one at a time to power her spells to defeat the guardians of the Vault. I am the last, as far as I know."

He eyes his equipment in the corner. "I need my armor. I'm naked without it. Almost literally." He dresses quickly and efficiently, with the air of a professional soldier. He accepts the wand of healing from Storn. "Much obliged. The Lord in Iron favors the bold." He fishes an iron holy symbol from his shirt, showing the holy symbol of Gorum. He puts it back and smiles. "I would be happy to join you. I am... very employable at the moment. Here." He puts an arm under Storn. "Let me help you."

In the morning, he flexes his hands and stretches his limbs. "It is good to be out the lair of that horrid witch. What brings you out to these hinterlands?"

Happy New Year, all. Back from vacation, so back to gaming!

"I think we encountered one of the dwarves. We tried to calm her, but ... she fled," Sander explains to the mercenary.

"I'm Sander, by the way, Sander Thistlewright and these are my friends," he says by way of introductions. "We're from Trunau, in Belkzen. We were recently attacked by some orcs and giants. We fought them off, but apparently their leader wants to destroy our home, so we came here to try to find something to stop her. We'd appreciate your help if you're willing. We've lost at least one good person so far and you saw we nearly all died right here."

In the morning, he prepares a number of extracts while the others rise.

"I guess we should keep looking around. Was that hag alone, or will we need to fight more?"

Tweaked my prepared extracts slightly. Also would I have had time/materials to brew a potion between when we set up camp and actually went to bed? If so, I could make a potion of CLW, expeditious retreat or enlarge person for someone.

Sorry. I only saw your last post, not the one before.

"All things considered, I'm very interested in staying with your group. Free agents are for towns and fortresses, not the wilderness." His face hardens as he remembers why he is alone. "If that hag was connected to the giants and orcs you are hunting, my sword is yours."

He removes a dagger from his belt, makes a small cut in his palm, and claps the bloody hand on Quill's shoulder. "As long as iron is hard and the stones abide, I am your man." He puts away the blade and spits on his palm, massaging the saliva into the wound. "Do you want to explore the Vault, or move on? I only ever saw the hag's chamber."

Quill seems quite abashed for having bad thoughts towards Dieter when the man thanks him. "Oh, it was nothing. We were coming here anyway."

And Quill only mostly flinches away when Dieter claps him on the shoulder as he is too weak to protest or move away.

"I think you should re-think that vow. It's dangerous with us. People die. You don't want to know what happened to the last people who tried to help us. Dieter furrows his brow in thought, pausing from his morning preparation. "I don't have any family. At least none that I know. There may be some in the Linnorm Kingdoms, but I've never met them. My comrades are dead in the Vault." He sighs heavily. "I can join you, and find purpose. Or I can go back and crawl into a bottle. @Sander - yess, probably enough time to make 1 potion

It seems prudent to rest for the night here, despite the fact that you are barely into the Vault. If the hag had needed extra strength to pierce the Vault's protections, it didn't seem wise to attempt them when you were wounded, despite the need to return to the keelboat before the crew got bored and sailed away.

The hag had little on her person that was of much interest, excepting a small pouch filled with gems and what looked like human teeth. The pile of goods against the wall, likely belonging to Dieter's old comrades, held more interesting items. There was a quiver with 20 arrows, five of which were different than the rest. One belt held a dagger that looked capable of cutting anything, and there was a pouch of gold coins. There was also a small scroll tube containing a single scroll.

Loot:

  • 15 arrows
  • 5 different arrows
  • dagger (special)
  • scroll
  • 983 gp in coins
  • 675 gp in gems
  • Silver Crusade

    Welcome back, GM TwoSmiles.

In the morning, Quill will pray (as he usually does) to the Elf that Hugs the World. He will pray for community and help...and strength. When he is done, he will again attempt to regain some of his lagging strength.

    1d4 ⇒ 3 Lesser Restoration

Walking around while eating some rations, Quill finally realizes there is loot. Quill like loot...

"...and arrows! Are they magic? COOOOOL." Quill casts Detect Magic and tries to ID the magics, licking his fingers and he prods at the loot. He ignores coins for the more fun magic and weaponry.

If there is anything he is unable to fathom, he will pass it off to Molly...she seems smart sometimes.

It also didn't seem prudent because Storn had FOUR STRENGTH.

Storn is up earlier than usual, and prays for a long time. The loss of his greatest source of pride, his strength seems to have hit the big man hard. However, after a long session of communion with his savage God, he is big and muscly again. Although the healing spells saved him from horrific scar damage, his weathered skin is all hairless and pink and his beard has been shaved thin. The face underneath the beard is ugly. Showing life once more, he roars to his feet.

"Allt hagl Gorum Drottinn í Jarn!" he smashes Aggrimosh several times, very noisily against his armour and he falls to one knee.

    "Let us fight."

After that bit of show, he glances over to the dagger.

4 Strength! Ha, even Sander is stronger than that!

Sander puts away his alchemy gear, admiring his new curative potion, which he slips into a pouch as he waits for the others to figure out what the items do. Auto succeed by taking 10; crafted it at 5th level, so 125 gp worth of materials subtracted from my sheet.

Molly awakens from sleep much refreshed, stretching until her joints audibly pop, then dropping into a brief set of exercises; acrobatic rolls and flips, interspaced with martial arts-forms.

"Much better," she declares. "Bloody monster, she was."

Sander felt that the dagger looked slightly...odd in this light. Holding it in his hands, it felt denser than anything that size had any right being. He was pretty sure it was made of adamantine. GM Bigrin, is there a current map? Paths forward?

Quill looks at Deiter and the hag.

"I thought this place was some sort of secret place...a vault of shadows or whatever. How did the twigmen, the hag, AND a team of dwarves all find their way here? Let alone past that big pig-splattering giant at the entrance? I think we should be wary...and expect that the seek are gone because this place is neither a secret nor a vault."

@Quill - I was wondering when we were going to get around to that

Rested and relaxed, you felt it was time to look at the other doors leading out of this chamber. There were a set of double doors to the north, and another to the west. You managed to sort out the doors with minimal confusion and snarkiness, though the latter was probably just being saved for something really perverse. Storn stomped over to the western doors, and with only a minor glance at the others to see if they were ready, threw the doors open wide.

Waited patiently beyond the doors was..a storage area. No, really. A goodly sized room, about fifteen feet square, and almost packed with crates, sacks, and gardening tools. Seeds and sprouts of many types of plants were labeled in some form of druidic script, preserved somehow by magic.

@Molly - Sorry, Molly. I missed the auras in this room. The doors must have been sheathed with lead to keep the magics from leaking into the council chamber. Yep, that's my story.

Once the softies are done eating their wimpfruits, Storn goes to try the other door from the main hall.

"Not so fast, chuckles," Molly says, as she takes a step into the room and looks around. "Let's see now...."

While it's obvious Storn don't know the difference between plants and pants, dill and dirt, herbs and herpes, fungus and dingus, Quill prefers to keep his equal lack of knowledge to himself.

He waits patiently for Molly's exploration of the herbs and then is ready to follow, moving on.

"The stench of the entrails of a tomato ... " Sander repeats, looking at Storn incredulously. "That's called a SAUCE! It smells delicious! Especially with the right herbs?!"

Also, LOL at the stench of the entrails of a tomato!

"Do they have any use besides cooking?"

"Tomatoes? Certainly! Some say they have health benefits if eaten raw. And you can throw ripe ones at certain unruly characters. A poor play, for instance. They go wonderfully on a nice sandwich ... though some might consider that cooking. Considering you don't have to heat them at all, I'm not sure that counts..."

Molly was able to identify most of the seedlings and seeds from her prior experience. Many were mundane plants, but there were orchid seeds that would probably fetch a good price in Trunau, and some from rare spice plants that would be worth carrying back also.

Molly thinks that she could get 50 gold or more from the seeds, but that the seedlings would be too fragile to survive the trip back

Quill waits to move through the other doorway.

I wonder if Marigold likes plants.
