Had been lost in the amazing situation they were in, she tucks her book away that she had been rapidly writing in about all the unheard of situations they were finding themselves in when she found herself in one that could be her end if she was not careful. Stepping back slightly to moved beside Quill and ensure that his view was not blocked, she drew her bow and knocked an arrow.

Move action to tuck the book away. Move to step back and draw bow.

"What have we here?"

Mawj once again shifts into his feral form with a blood-quickening snort. He lopes a wide arc around the giant to take a flanking position.

Feral form, double move in a semi-circle to I14.

Molly and crew scattered back away from the giant creature, even as Mariana recognized it as a Marsh Giant. These giants are quick, especially for their size, and often have limited spellcasting capabilities that augment their ambush predator natures. This was was carrying a gaff, a tool for hooking large fish out of the water, and was wielding it with ease. It's strike against the wisp had been brutal. It stepped sideways and whipped the gaff through the air again, catching the approaching Mawj hard in the chest. The sound of snapping ribs cracked in the air as the man's breath was driven clear out of him. Storn saw what was going on, and chanted a spell to make his size on par with the giant, even as he swung Agrimmosh back and forth in anticipation.

Round 1-2:

"REEEEEEEE-augh." Mawj's battle cry is cut short by the enormous thump to his chest. He clutches himself in pain briefly, before gritting his teeth and throwing himself at the giant in a desperate struggle to survive.

Storn's mind races as he sees the giant almost kill Mawj with one blow. Although his goal is to die in battle, this is probably not the battle.

"Quill! Look for a means of retreat! I'm not sure how many blows Mawj can take. Did a way into the ground open up? Molly, can you talk to this thing? What does it want?"

Quill lowers his bow, staring at Storn. He is unsure that his elven ears are hearing the big man correctly.

"Retreat? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate its chances," Quill retorts, reminding the man that this elf would not be fleeing from battle (as long as there are meat shields between him and the giant, anyway).

Seeing Mawj take such a painful looking blow, Mariana tries to decide the best course of action...

Moving forward twenty feet forward, she whispers some words and looks at the giant's gaff.

"Hope this helps..." she whispers to herself.

The creature bellowed back at Molly, even as Mawj grew in size and he and Storn converged on it. "Gripwort guard! And hungry, so hungry. dwarves not enough, must eat you too!" The voice was moist and filled with gulping sounds as the giant talked. It screamed in pain as Mawj and Storn beat on it. It blocked Storn's blow with its gaff, but then dropped the weapon as Mariana's spell slipped past its mental defenses. Sander's cold bomb splashed over it, raising frozen blisters on its damp, moss-covered skin. It roared in pain again, and lashed out with one blubbery arm at Mawj, toppling the now-giant skinchanger to the ground. Maddened by pain, and the fact that the pigman had hurt it so badly, the giant stomped down on the fallen Mawj, driving crushed ribs deeper into the man's lungs. Mawj twitched for a moment, blood burbling out of his mouth, and from the shattered ruin that was his chest.

Round 2-3:

Storn doesn't miss a beat as Mawj falls. He knows the skinchanger is dead, but at least the giant is taking some damage.

"Goodbye, Mawj," Molly whispers when she sees the giant-sized alchemist fall... and die.

Stalking forward, Molly again shifts into her martial stance to optimize her defence. Once she is in optimal position, she opens wide her mouth as if to speak -- and vomits up a gout of black, squirming bodies. The spiders cover the distance between her and the Marsh Giant in a rustling rush and scoot up its legs, biting as they go.

Moving to L9, casting Vomit Swarm. Spiders move to attack, auto-hit for 1d6 ⇒ 5 damage, plus distraction and poison. Fort. save DC 12 or take 1d2 ⇒ 1 Str. damage.

"Dear gods," Sander whispers as their latest addition to their group falls beneath the giant's brutal assault.

Moving as quickly as he can, he steps to the side next to Quill to clear his throwing lane, then hurls another bomb that slams into the giant's head, even as he is careful to put enough spin on it that none of the freezing liquid touches the spiders. Setting it up to avoid them if it's possible. If not, sorry spiders.

Sander's bomb came crashing down on the monster, just as it turned from Mawj's crushed corpse. Its roar of triumph was cut short as the frosty explosion tore part of its jaw off, sending frozen juices spattering all over the clearing. Quill's arrows skipped off the creature's tick hide as it spun in place, but it couldn't escape the horde of spiders that scampered up its flanks, biting and skittering. It was so distracted by the spiders and the injuries from Sander's bomb that it was completely blindsided by Storn's hammer blow. Agrimmosh came in with all the force the giant Storn could put behind it, caving the giant's face in, and sending it tumbling down to lay beside Mawj in death.

    Spellcraft to identify unknown potion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24

    Molly pads past the giant's corpse at first to see to Mawj. The body is already shrinking back to its normal size, the spell of enlargement having ended with death, and the Witch kneels briefly by the Alchemist's side to close his eyes.

    "Rest in peace, warrior," she says, softly. "If I ever meet your wives and children, they'll know you died a warrior, undaunted."

    With that done, Molly moves over to the giant's corpse and briefly, but efficiently frisks it.

    "Wand of healing," she announces as she holds up exhibit A. "And a wand of light." Exhibit B. "I wouldn't mind the healing wand, but I figure most of us can use it. There's some cash and gems. Gaff's pretty big, 'less'n you're giant-sized. One potion of healing, and... and... Bugger this."

    Molly visibly grits her teeth and shakes her head.

    "We got the time to bury Mawj and raise some kind of marker for him and Mossmoon? Except... except it don't feel right to just roll one in the swamp and let the past claim both. I'm... I'm gonna go light up the stones while you all think about it."

    The Witch moves away, shining the lantern's light on the stones. Before that, though, she looks around for any remains Mossmoon might have left behind. If she finds any, she gently adds them to the husk already in the lantern -- unless that threatens to overpower the magical item.


    Molly laid Mawj to rest, speaking a few words over his corpse as it slowly reduced to its normal size. Her voice hitched slightly as she spoke of the man's possible wife and kids. When the others had said their words, they positioned the body respectfully, then began going through the items on the giant's corpse.

    The loss struck her hard, though, and she stomped off to see what lighting up the stone would do for them.

    Holding off on lighting the stone until others post, just to see what RP opportunities might arise

    Storn jerks his hammer out of the giant, spraying giant-sized gore over the area. The - literally - enormous Kellid raises Aggrimosh, roaring his victory. He then lowers his hammer and turns to look over Mawj's corpse, shaking his head, his expression hidden by his helmet.

    "Mph. He died with glory. We pray we will have his honour."

    Loud thumps sound as Storn stands over Mawj's body. He grabs the now Sander-sized holy symbol banging on the outside of his breastplate, and without a word to the group he begins to pray in Kellid.

    Storn slams his guantleted fist against his breastplate once, and then turns to the others.

    "My people burn their dead, but that's not a good idea here. We should also take what we can from him that will be useful for our mission. As for his body... well if you want a grave dug, I'm this size for a half an hour. Might as well take advantage."

    Sander looks shaken as Molly lays Mawj to rest.

    "I feel like we barely got to know him," he says in a sad whisper. "It was like he was here, and then, BAM, he was dead. ... If I die, one of you will let Louly know, right? Take a message back to her? She'd want to know..."

    "Don't be daft," Molly calls over to Sander, a note of anger in her voice. "Of course we would. Heck, I'll give her every copper I can scavenge from who- or whatever killed you, and more. Rest secure that we'll look after your wife. Fool."

    Quill sends another arrow in the giant even after it falls for fear that I might rise again to strike another of his party down. To avoid looking at Mawj's body, Quill keeps watch with tears in his eyes, occasionally wiping them away and snuffling.

    He didn't want to see that.

    When it comes time to bury Mawj, Quill will offer a soft prayer of his own. He kneels at the grave and says some words to Mawj's spirit.

    "I guess you died in glory, like Storn says. And you also died squealing...and you always liked squealing, didn't you?" Quill wipes away a tear. "I wish I had seen the giant sooner, we might have been able to save you. I'm sorry Mawj. I'l kill at least two giants more to make up for this. Not sure that will help you, but I will. Also, I'll pray to the Elf that Hugs the World to guide you to mud pens of the Elysian Fields. You can muck and romp around to your delight." Quill pats Mawj's gravedirt fondly as he rises, having said his peace.

    Quill nods. He thinks he knows Louly. "I'll do that for you, Sander. I'll do that. And...and...and if I don't make it, you'll let...uh," Marigold? Marigold Pottersmoot, the woman who's barely ever spoken to me, let alone knows I exist?, Quill stammers. "You'll let my stepdad know, right? He took me in when no one else would. He's a good man."

    After the grave is dug and arrows are recovered, Quill is ready to enter the Vault.

    It didn't take long for Storn to dig a grave in the soft dirt of the hummock. The bigger problem was that after he had gone only a few feet, water started seeping into the hole. In the end, you decided that a four foot deep hole would have to do. Mawj's body was laid in the hole, keeping aside only a small bundle of his belongings, then the soppy dirt was shoveled in after.

    When everyone was ready, Molly took the lantern, with the remains of two wisps inside, and bathed the cool blue light over the center stone. The vines covering the stone writhed and twisted way, revealing a faintly glowing olive-hued stone.

    With the time spent investigating the bodies, and digging the grave, Storn's enlarge person spell finally wears off as he talks to Sander and Quill.

    "If any of us die the entire Hold of Belkzen will know how we died gloriously on the battlefield! Mawj died well and his death will serve as a warning to us. Next giant, we let the damn thing come to us. As much fun as dying is, those giants aren't going to kill themselves. Well, maybe Quill could write them some poetry about his feelings."

    Storn rapidly shrinks down to his normal, still very large size. He barks a laugh and stalks off to look at the new stone.

    "Okay... so it said open the portal. What does that mean?"

    Storn pokes the glowing stone.

    Mariana is quieter than usual after the loss of Mawj. She spent hours sketching pictures of their fallen comrade. She would not let Mawj go without putting him to memory.

    When Molly put together a place to put the warrior to rest, Mariana would sketch that, as well, leaving a section set aside for the odd warrior that they barely knew.

    Then she spent more time, introspectively writing and watching her companions, seeming to take more notes, as if she was making sure she would not forget anything about any of them.

    This entire time, her cheeks were either shining with fresh tears, or showing the dry lines of her pained tears. It was a death far too close for her preferences.

    "Goodbye, Mawj..."

    Sander gives a small, sad smile at Molly's words.

    Eventually, the sad business concluded, he turns his attention to the entry into the vault.

    "I guess we should go in now. ... It's what Mossmoon and probably Mawj would have wanted, right?"

    As they enter, he pulls out a vial, which he drinks.

    Drinking my mutagen: +4 to Con (+10 hp, +2 Fort saves), +2 AC, -2 Cha for 50 minutes; will level up shortly.

    Quill draws his bow and is ready to enter the stone/vault.

    "C'mon. We gotta do this. Not just for Trunau, but also for Mawj," Quill says grimly. He enters the stone.

    "Move with caution. The Druids meant this to be a secure vault, so traps are a definite possibility. Also, the enemy may have made preparations since they found a way in. I'm going to start scanning for magic auras and will keep scanning. Who wants to look out for mechanical traps?"

    DM Bigrin, Molly will cast detect magic and maintain and renew it as needed for this dungeon run.

    Storn stops just shy of poking the stone and he grunts over to Sander and nods.

    Stalking away from the group, Storn spends a little time mumbling his prayers to Gorum in Kellid as he prepares for the battle on the other side. He then meticulously cleans off his armour spikes in a desperate attempt to keep rust away from the non-magical part of his armour and stalks back to the stone.

    "Marjoram can go in front, she seems good with traps." Storn's voice is a low growl. "This is going to be weird druid stuff and I'm going to trust you lot to point at what I should be hitting."

    Storn will memorize another shield of faith and keep his new second level spell slot open.

    Molly likewise spends a bit of time refreshing her store of magic. Unlike Storn, she is not in prayer, but instead brings out her toad and exchanges a series of whispers and croaks with it.


    Moving on later today, likely during my lunch break.


    Once the preparations for Mawj's burial were finalized, and the small ceremony finished, you gathered your things together for the trip into the Vault. Molly played the lantern over the central stone, and it began to glow, the moss and vines covering it pulled back to reveal the stone in its entirety. No tunnel opened, or portal yawned, but the stone had to be the key.

    Storn was the first to approach the stone, ignoring the others' warnings as he reached out to touch its glowing surface. Thinking better of touching it, he volunteered Mariana's services. The resident archaeologist swallowed, then stepped forward. Hesitantly, she reached out to touch the stone...and vanished.

    Mariana:

    The instant of darkness after you touched the menhir was as startling as it was brief. Light came rushing back and you found yourself in a verdant forest, standing in a clearing about the same size as the one you had just left. A similar glowing menhir stood before you. The forest around you is lush and filled with exotic plant life, with lianas sprouting flowers of vibrant color. A path lines with blooming roses leads from the monolith to a giant floral bloom carved from wood. Two carved wooden stamens stretch out toward the pulsating menhir, extending from either side of a set of ornate doors carved into the giant flower. An overpowering fragrance of flowers and sweet grass permeates the air. The sun above sits at its zenith, basking the area in light and warmth. Above the doors is a message carved in strange runic letters.

    "Alright, I'm holding the lantern, so I gotta be last through - and hope we don't get stuck for taking it through. Move it, lads!" Molly says.

    Certain that Mariana has now found out any traps, Storn clanks Aggrimosh against his shield one for good luck, and then pokes the stone.

    "It smells so nice," he says as he looks around. "I wish Trunau looked like this! Hard to believe there's any evil in here..."

    He glances at the runes, trying to make heads or tails of them.

    No Linguistics skill, unfortunately. Probably more up Mariana's alley.

    Molly follows through last, lantern in one hand - and her crossbow in the other, masterwork bayonet fitted into its groove. The Witch mutters a Word and looks around....

    Storn blinks as he looks around the pleasant, flowery woodland. Having expected a dank dungeon full of violent dangers, he's a little disappointed.

    "Well this is... nice?"

    He clanks over to the giant flower and stares at the runes.

    "Hah! I can do something about this. Gorum knows well that dungeons full of terrifying evils are often locked by strange runes, so he blesses us to read those runes when necessary. It's the only time reading is encouraged, really."

    Unless someone has linguistics, Storn will use his blank level 1 slot for comprehend languages to read the runes.

    Storn sits to meditate, preparing himself to read the oddly shaped runes. After a quarter hour or so, he stands, knees cracking under the strain, and stares at the curved symbols.

    Druidic:
    If you seek peace in nature, welcome. If you seek anything else, beware the wrath of the Vault of Thorns.

    Even as Storn was relaying these words to the others. a high-pitched voice shouted out, "That's right, intruders! Beware our wrath!"

    What looked to be a tiny bundle of twigs and vines leaped out of the rose bushes, and stabbed a wooden spear straight at Storn. The twig simply skittered from Storn's heavy armor. Another of the stick bundles dropped down to the path and flung its hand out. A spray of splinters erupted from it, magically growing in the air to the size of toothpicks...fast-moving toothpicks. each of you ducked and tried to shield your eyes from the wooden spray.
