The battle on the deck of the keelboat waged on as the combatants in the mist continued to hack at each other. With a roar of triumph, Storn smashed his opponent to the ground, leaving its head an ugly mess. Mawj, smiling a toothy smile as he heard Storn, rushed into the fog. He somehow found the orc in the mist and slammed his weapon into it. The orc, barely standing after all of the damage the girls had done to it, died with not even a shriek on its lips.
Over at the lookout tower, Sander lay unconscious, bleeding out, with a very angry orc standing above him, weapon raised to deliver the final mercy. Quill stood, loosed an arrow, and dropped down in one smooth motion. Though the arrow went wide, it came close enough that the orc turned his attention to Quill, instead of the halfling. With steady strides, the orc mounted the stairs to the top of the lookout tower and stood over Quill.

Round 6, Init 18
Seeing the orc standing over him, Quill realizes he's about to die and accepts his fate. He tried so hard. He reaches into his pouch and pulls out a going away present for the orc.
"I may die, but I'll take you with me!" Quill says, tossing an alchemist fire point blank at the orc. Provokes.

Quill looked up into the rage maddened eyes of the orc above him, and noticed that half of the orc's face was covered in twisted lumps of flesh that could only be scars from a bad burn. Thinking quickly, he pulled an alchemist's fire from his pouch. The orc's eyes widened in fear as he saw what Quill was doing, and even as the elf threw the flask's contents in his face, the orc was chopping down with his falchion. The pain was nearly unbearable as the blade carved into Quill's shoulder and torso. Then came the screaming from both elf and orc as the fire erupted on the orc's face and torso.
In the fog, Storn rushed out at the archer while the others rand to help Sander and Quill. The archer tucked her shoulder and met Storn's charge without being shifted, then stepped back and fire three arrows point blank. Storn's shield, still raised for his bull rush, caught two of the arrows, their shafts snapping as they hit, but the third came in under the shield and pierced his left leg.
Quill takes 16 damage from the falchion, and 1 splash damage, and is now dying.

Storn glares at the archer in pure rage as she blocks his progress to his friends. Roaring with anger, he charges at her, slamming down Agrimmosh, but his sloppy attack misses wildly.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 1 ⇒ (7) + 7 - 1 = 13 Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Scowling, Storn stares at her.
"The orcs are nearly all dead, and you will fall once more like you did before. You have a choice. Run away and come kill us later when you have a better chance of succeeding, or die here like a fool. I am a Gorumite, and I know when to retreat. This is when you retreat."

In desperation, the woman continues to backpedal, firing arrow after arrow at Storn. Somehow, the shafts either miss or deflect from the big man's armor, and only one manages to pierce his leg.
"Run? Now? You killed my fiance, and I will die before I let you defeat me again!"
Up on the watchtower, the orc flailed while the sticky fire burned away skin and hair. In his madness, he completely forgot that he was practically surrounded by water; blessed cool water that could put out the flames on his head and chest with pitiful ease. He collapsed to the deck, just missing the prone form of his victim, and died with a gargling scream still trying to escape his throat.

And here you stand before me with a coward's weapon, thinking you're brave. I'm going to enjoy forgetting you and that mewling wimp I killed beneath Trunau."
Storn then backs up, stepping around the corner.

You know, they used to use Mercury to cure that particular STD
Storn's comments successfully goading the woman into following him around the corner. For some reason, the mighty warrior didn't just pummel her, but as the archer followed him, Storn slammed his hammer into her unprotected skull. For the second time during the trip, the woman crumpled to the ground, but from the dent in her skull, and the way the blood poured from the wound, she did not look as if she were going to be getting up again.

"Good news, Gorum wants you to kill more people."
"Marigold, is that you?" Quill mummers weakly, his eyes blinking open from the best dream. "Yes, yes, I would like another slice of buttercream pie, extra snozzberries!"
Quill's eyes finally focus, healing magic replacing lost blood and broken skin.
"AHHHRR!!! STORN!!! WHERE'S MARIGOLD!?!" Quills says, jolting up and rememberig where he is. He calms slowly, eventually even talking Storn's offered hand to get upon his feet again.
"Oh, hey, thanks. I thought...I thought I was dead," Quill says, looking at the charred remains of the orc that almost ended his life. "I thought that jerk was the end of me."
Quill offers an embarrassed kick at the charred orc. Then again, another kick. And one more.
Quill would love the belt of dexterity.

Shakes her head as she checks on each of her companions, ensuring that their injuries were left in the past. Cursing to herself, she wished she could do more to heal her friends.

"What?" Molly asks, grinning at Sander. "You cam't imagine shuffling off to your eternal reward and seeing damsels like me waiting for you on waking in the sacred places? You'll hurt my feelings!"
Quill the Fletcher |
Quill picks up the parchment and reads it aloud, looking around when he finishes it. He can't believe all that it says.
"Is any part of this cruise not going to be a disaster?! Who let all the orcs in the region know what we'd be doing and when we were coming!?! GAH!!" Quill offers the note around to those who can read.
His anger is mollified when he is able to try on the new belt and enjoy the benefits

"Where do we go now? How far away is the thing?" Quill asks Mariana and Molly as if they might know.
Storn of Gorum |
Storn grins one of his uglier grins at Sander.
"You almost died. They died all the way. That orc you and Quill slayed was mighty. I'm annoyed I didn't get to kill him. On the plus side I got to get rid of that stupid archer."
He glances over to her body and what's left of her head.
"Almost killed by an archer... twice! Humiliating. Hmph."
Seeing the parchment, Storn snatches it up and spends a frustratingly long time trying to read it.
"Hmph. It's not murder if it is war. And at least this note doens't say why we're here, just that we're here."
Storn also looks to Molly and Mariana.
"What Quill said. Where now?"
Sander Thistlewight |
"I think maybe it will be good to get off the ship again. I don't know how that woman got free again, but something still seems wrong about it. They were nice enough, I suppose ... when they weren't yelling at us ... but even so. Don't we want to find that secret entrance Calrianne told us about? Which way is the fort?"
DM Bigrin |
Going back below decks, you see signs of a horrific fight. The brutish orc and the archer had cut their way trough the crew, leaving a pile of wounded and dead. Halrex was draped over a bank of oars, bleeding horrifically from a head wound that Captain Bloodtusk was trying to staunch with the remains of his shirt. The Captain himself looked as if he had been wounded several times, and there were bodies of 3 other orc raiders draped over the decking.
The Captain looked up and said, "Krothu's dead, and Barka too. The rest are injured. Most of 'em'll just take time to heal up, but Halrex is hurt bad. He got her in the head. If we can't stop the bleeding and heal the wound with magic, she'll die. Can you help? She's not long for this world. I gotta feeling this all has to do with you, anyways, since the orc leader rushed to let that archer out while his boys did for my crew. Shoulda known better than to lock her in the armory, even with that cage in there."
Molly Blackfoot |
Molly kicks off her boots, then rushes over to Halrex and touches her. Next, she lays a touch on the captain. From there, she pads off, seeking one wounded crewman to another, offering touches that have an immediate effect; blood stops running and injuries knit seemingly of their own accord.

"We are still pursuing the warlord and the giants, yes? Can we follow the tracks of these greenskins to their camp and continue following their trail backward?"
"Yeah, that's right, Mawj, uh huh. We're going to start tracking from here..."...and definitely not going to some secret treasure cave or anything.
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6 Bluff
Quill rubs the back of his head, not willing to spill the beans in front of anyone else. He's unsure that he wants the newcomer to come along (despite or because of his inclination to pork their enemies is unclear), but definitely doesn't want to say so in front of others.
"Shall we set off in the morning or now?" Quill asks trying to change to topic while looking at the sky to gauge the time. What time is it, GM? Also, how far away do we think we have to go?
Mariana Trellis |
"This is a lot of trouble. If we follow their tracks back, we will be good to fight them...but will we be ready? Is everyone rested and healed enough or should I continue using resources?" seems to have a great deal of concern on her face as she plays with the wand in her hands.
Sander Thistlewight |
Sander blanches as he sees the carnage below.
"We're so sorry. I think you're right and it may have been because of us. Poor Krothu and Barka..." he says. "I don't know what exactly is going on, but I promise we're going to try to make sure it doesn't happen again!"
I think the answers to Quill's questions will inform the answers to Mariana's. I've used some resources and am still pretty badly hurt, though I can drink a couple extracts to help me.
DM Bigrin |
As Molly moved about the crew, healing as best she could and at least stopping the bleeding on most, Captain Bloodtusk wiped the blood splatter from his face. "Night's coming on quick, and I bet you're not excited to be moving about the swamp in the dark. And I don't care if this lot attacked because of you, or just because we were in the the wrong place at the wrong time. You've been good to the crew, and you've worked hard. Because of you, Calrianne is alive, and the boat's still going. We contracted to bring you here, stay until you've done what you needed in the swamp, then take you on North to the fort, and I ain't backing out on that. Halgra said your business int he swamp would likely take a couple of days, and we could use that time to rest and recover."
Mawj |
Mawj is very impressed by Molly's quick healing of the crew. "You would be a very valuable asset to Mawj's village! We only have one crotchety cleric for healing, Tov One-Eye, and he is a dirty, dirty old man. His hands tend to wander while he is ministering, if you know what Mawj means." He listens to Quill, but writes it off because elves tend to say silly things. He hears the captain and perks his ears. "Aye, Mawj is ready for a rest. We need to be at our best to take on any camp we find."
Molly Blackfoot |
"Well, give me a patient who's my type and my hands might do a bit of wandering as well," Molly says with a weary grin - which slips away before she gets to her next patient.
"Sivanah's seventh veil, this was brutal. I think some rest and recovery before we hit the swamp is a very fine idea."
