"You want to blend in with the crew, then act as crew! I ain't running a pleasure barge. If you can pull that stick of a bow you carry, then you can pull an oar. Man up, boy. Pretend you got something in your britches aside from your purse."

LOL. I'm having flashbacks to this Far Side cartoon (@bottom).

Quill looks at the man, then down at his own noodly elven arms and shrugs.

"Sure, if you want to keep my elven eyesight and bow down below where neither can be of use while I strain useless with an oar that weighs more than I do, that's what I'll do."

Sighing miserably, Storn takes off of his beautiful, heavy, stands-out-like-a-sore-thumb spiked armour and stacks it in the cabin.

"This is like being naked but nobody is impressed," mutters Storn. He nonetheless keeps Agrimmosh strapped to his belt, not wanting to put any distance between himself and the mighty weapon.

"All right, if it's work you want, it's work I'll do. Captain."

"Storn, I don't believe that if you are rowing, it will matter if you wear your armor, my friend," Mariana says with a smile, "And with your strength...rowing might be ideal." Looking to the captain, "Is there a place for a lookout? If so, Quill might be ideal for that...if not, then despite his protests, I believe he can pull a rather strong bow, so he can likely row if necessary. As far as myself, I am not above scrubbing a deck if I need to...Pathfinders have to do all sorts of chores when in training, so I have seen it all."

Taking a moment to gather in her surroundings she smiles again, "This is going to be much fun...are there lots of rodents on board? I have heard that that is an issue on some vessels...if so...Sander is quite good at throwing things and he could perhaps hide beneath and hunt such critters...that way he works and hides...just a thought!" Mariana is clearly trying to show use for each of the party that hasn't spoken up yet or has been dubious of their place...and endear her and her companions to the captain by showing their usefulness.

Why do I suddenly feel like I've woken up on some pirate ship deep at sea? All we need now is some taskmaster making us plug away all day and night at work we're not suited for. Some sort of scourge...

"If you lot don't start using your ears, as well as your mouths, then we're gonna have a long trip together. I said to talk to Halrex, as she sets the duty watch. Now begone! I have a letter to read before the light's all gone." He waved the sealed envelope in the air and pointed to the door.

Outside the captain's cabin, Oorug was waiting. He took you to the crew quarters, where ten hammocks were strung up. "We take turns on watches, so there's enough room for everyone to grab a hammock when its your time to crash. There's footlockers for storage, and the unspoken rule is if you get caught stealing, you end up in the river with nothing but your skin to protect you from the crocs."

Oorug led you through the rest of the ship as the sun ate the horizon. The enveloping darkness made finding footing difficult in some of the holds, as he pointed out the rowing galley, the cargo area, the galley, the watchtower, and the pilot's deck. Then, he led you back down the gangplank to introduce you to the rest of the crew.

The regular crew entirely consisted of half-orcs. Barka, Gashnahk, Krothu, and Taug were male. The women were Ghorza, Sharg, and Urul. They all seemed friendly enough, though a little wary. Coxswain Halrex was a full-blooded orc, and easily as big as Storn. The suspicious look on her face as Oorug introduced you was easily enough to make you realize that she was likely a harsh taskmistresss.

Coxswain Halrex said, "Captain tells me you're to be acting as crew, so you'll be treated as crew. Put in your day's effort or you'll have to deal with me. There's nothing wrong with sweat and hard labor, so don't shirk and we won't have issues. There's lots to be done on the boat, so even noodle arms like you, she sneered at Quill, "will have something to do. If we're attacked, I expect everyone to jump in and defend the boat. As for jobs, the big one here can take a stint on the oars. I expect the rest of you to as well, though I don't see how most of you would last more than a half hour. There's also the stables to be mucked, horses to tend, fishing and cooking, sounding the riverbed, and lookout duty. I expect you to rotate through those jobs to make sure no one is shirking, but I'm not too much of a fool to identify talent and use it."

"Before I add you to the duty watch, I need to know your capabilities and strengths. Specifically, since night is upon us, I need to know if you can see in the darkness."

"I can't. My eyes are good as long as there's light, but not much use once the sun goes down. I'm good with herbs and such if anyone's ill, and I've spent some time fishing, but the rest I don't know about."

I'd probably be best at lookout and fishing...

Dinner was good, and the evening passed quickly. When the time came for the night watches, the off-duty crew went promptly to sleep, with little grousing or conversation. Oorug bade you do the same, and the night passed swiftly without incident.

The morrow brought the hustle and bustle of getting the keelboat into the water. There was no wind to speak of, so it was up to the horses and rowers to make the ramshackle boat move downstream at any speed faster than the sluggish current. Storn, unsurprisingly, ended up on the first rowing shift, with Quill pulling the oar in front of him.

Molly, having drawn mid-watch, slept in a little later than the others to find herself on breakfast duty. After that, it was a stint on the lookout tower.

Sander was tasked, along with Mariana, of helping cook breakfast and serving it to the crew at their stations. After that, it was time to muck out the stables and then fishing to try and augment the boat's supplies.

Coxswain Halrex made it clear that you would be rotating through the duty roster in the six days that it is estimated that the trip will take. She also makes no concealment of the fact that she feels anyone not doing their share at rowing is a slothful wasted piece of flesh. But, maybe that's just because she hasn't gotten to know you very well yet.

Storn and Quill:

Make a DC10 Strength check please, for your rowing pleasure.

Molly:

Make me a DC10 profession(cook) or Int check.

Mariana and Sander:

Make me a DC10 Handle Animal or Ride check.

Then, make me a Strength, Survival, or Profession(Fisherman) check

Muttering to herself, "I never had to work with horses...I just rode in carriages..."

The morning passed as you drudged through your daily efforts. Some of you met with more success than others. And for some, well it wasn't exactly surprising that Quill wasn't suited for rowing. Still, he was given a fair go at it before Coxswain Halrax ordered him to "Get your hairless arse off of that bench and go sit in the watch tower, you puling, useless kitten! And if anything sneaks up on us while you're up there, I'll toss you to the crocs, no matter what the Captain says!"

Storn, on the other hand, took to rowing like a fish to water. Or like an Ulfen to drink. Shouting and singing with the half-orcs, he steadily pulled on the oar for the entire morning. When the mid-day shift change came, his arms and back were sore from the unaccustomed exercise, but he was still in good spirits.

Between them, Sander and Molly took care of the horses. First mucking out their stables and changing the hay, then feeding and rubbing down one that had gone lame the day before. Neither were hostlers, but between them they knew enough to get the job done. The fishing was another matter. The nets that the crew had set over the side were heavy, and neither were exactly strong. They got the nets partially up the side and anchored, but had to call for help to get them the last of the way on board. The catch was good, and would fill the plates for a day or two. Of particular interest to Krothu, the crewman that served as head cook, was a giant sand turtle that was nearly half as big as Sander.

Molly didn't do so hot in the kitchen with Krothu that morning, leaving a pot of porrige too close to the fire and scorching it. But, the half-orc allowed that Halrex was worse than useless in the kitchen, and no one on the crew would eat anything that Barka served up. Still, she wasn't likely to do more than her share of watches in the kitchen with those skills.

Basically, the morning went well. In down time, it was easy enough to meet at the port railing and look off into Belkzen across the water, or to stare down at the fish and other creatures swimming in the clear water. Crocodiles of various sizes could be seen in the water and on the banks, and one particularly large pair seemed to be following the boat, snapping up scraps that Krothu tossed out of the kitchen porthole.

At mid-day, the entire crew breaks for lunch, except for the Captain or whoever he designated to steer the boat. Take some time to talk, complain, or shoot things in the water. You know, whatever makes you happy.

Later, Molly watches all the creatures of the river and digs a small box out of her pocket. Kronug, Molly's toad familiar, looks out of his comfortable 'chariot' and croaks excitedly - until witch and toad spot the crocodiles.

"No swimming today, old chum," Molly pronounces as she frowns at the two largest crocs.

We will have to see where it leads us and hope that it can help the people of Trunau as much as possible. After all, they are putting a lot of faith in us, sending us out when they are already short bodies..."

so we're aware of the following ship folk, right?

Ship folk:

Capt. Bloodtusk
Oorug, male who met us on shore
Halrex, female orc coxswain
Barka (lousy cook), Gashnahk, Krothu (head cook), and Taug were male.
The women were Ghorza, Sharg, and Urul.

Sander sighs deeply as he leans against the railing during the lunch break.

I should be safe at home, tending my plants and wife. Why am I out here? Where the heck are we even? This is lunacy.

He looks around to see what the others -- particularly the crewmembers are doing, and if anyone has anything interesting going on to pass the time until they all die ... er, reach their destination.

Sander - that' a good summary of what you know of the crew so far.

Storn leaned against the same rail as Sander, looking out into the water and to the crocs following behind. He stretched his limbs as Oorug came up to join him.

"Nice work on the oars, Storn! It's not often that someone new can pick up the slack on the oars like that. And that haul of fish this morning! I saw that turtle, and I can't wait to see what supper's like. You guys are all right. And, tell Quill not to take Halrex's words too seriously. She knows that a god lookout and spotter is just as important as being able to row. She's just hard on any new rowers...ack!"

As Oorug leaned against the rail as he was talking. He cried out as the railing gave way, and all three - Oorug, Storn, and Sander flailed about trying to catch their balance on the rocking boat. Leaning out over the water, it wasn't hard to think of the consequences of falling in!

I need reflex saves from Sander and Storn.

Do I see this happening? If so...

Molly curses when she sees what befalls - and who falls into the water. Heels drumming against the deck, the Witch runs up to where the accident happened, already pulling a silk rope from her pack.

"Someone hefty brace and hold the rope while I snipe the crocs!" she shouts.

Reflex save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17 Hope that's enough. Better post once I know the results.

Storn leans against the rail, beaming to Oorug.

"Everyone here can earn their keep. I've also never had turtle, I think I should make it a goal to eat at least one of every --- dwah!"

Quill's head swivels to the sound of the crack, assuming Storn had broken something...again.

Uh-oh.

"Man overboard?!" Quill asks, waiting to see if anyone falls in, at which time he will shout louder and with more certainty.

Sander, being agile, managed to fling himself to the side to grab onto a solid portion of the rail. Storn, and Oorug beside him, splashed into the water beside the ship.

Molly grabbed a rope and tossed it in to the water, begging the downed duo to grab hold. With a concerned look, she glanced behind the boat. The pair of crocs that had been trailing the craft for hours weren't behind it any longer. Instead, a pair of v-shaped wakes were speeding towards Storn and Oorug.

Molly, are you aiming the rope at any particular person, or just into the water?

Here's the map
Anyone not on the map wasn't nearby. It will take 2 move actions to get to the railing.

Sorry about falling down on the mapping job. Water is not my forte :)

I'll put it equidistant between them.

Molly ties off the rope, then starts to sway in place while her hands weave patterns of magic in the air and she chants Words of Power under her breath.

Summon monster I! Here comes Flipper...

If this is freshwater, I don't think Flipper is going to do much good!

"Men overboard!" Sander cries out in alarm, pulling a vial from his pocket.

He waits until the alligator is 5 feet away from Storn or Oorug and then gives the vial a vigorous shake and launches it toward the creature, where it explodes in a fiery burst!

Storn sputters, both annoyed and delighted to be without his armour. He looks around wildly before he sees the very large crocodiles heading over.

"I see them you yammering mince pie!"

Storn noisily splashes for the rope while he quickly bubbles up a prayer to Gorum for protection. Unfortunately, he swims just like a brick.

Swim: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

How far is the rope from Storn? If he can just grab it, he'll do that and draw Agrimmosh. Otherwise he'll fail to swim.
