"Hey! There is a ladder here! It goes..." ...up or down, GM Bigrin?

Is there anything else in the room besides the white sword?


Up. The ladder goes up. As for the rest of the room, there looks to be an empty bookshelf straight across from the portcullis, and maybe a small cabinet to your right. To the west, you can see what looks like a door.


Yelena lets out a chagrined laugh as the portcullis refuses to budge. "It probably didn't go anywhere interesting anyway." Instead, she inspects the niches and burial urns. "Does anyone see any inscriptions? I want to make certain we are not disturbing the honorable dead." Dwarves are particular about disturbing their ancestors.

"It looks like this passage may get us into the room, despite the portcullis, unless it's similarly blocked," Vashta notes, pointing to the right. "Might as well try it and if not, we'll take the other passage."

Looking to Storn with a touch of concern, she shakes her head. "Well, when you find your first one, I hope that it doesn't bring you down. Otherwise, I won't be able to tell you that I told you so. With that, she follows the group.


I'm getting conflicting signals. Are you going to the right (east) or into the burial niche room (west)?

Storn opened the west door to the burial room.

"If the paladins of Iomedae set up a cunning pit trap before their burial room, I'll buy you the next beer," says Storn as he wanders in.

Storn starts looking over the urns and the room carefully. He decides to let somebody else without the strength of a particularly handsome musk ox touch anything that looks fragile.

Taking 20 on perception to scour the place, although Storn won't move or touch the urns.

" ... Or we can lumber on like a chicken with its head cut off," Vashta says with a shrug, spinning on her heel to follow Storn.

She stops at the entrance to the room, intoning a quick chant to look for magic. Since I can't look for undead.

Quill looks around for signs of tracks, finding none. What he does notice is that the ladder going up likely terminates in a trapdoor leading to a room above - perhaps the room with the burning corspes. He also saw a mostly empty bookshelf, and what migt have been a small cabinet or trunk to his right. He was about to comment on thse when the sounds of a commotion came from the other room.

Storn wandered into the room with all the burial niches, looking around with interest, Mariana and Vashta right behind. The sorceress tried to look for signs of magic in the room, but found none. Mockingly, Storn held his arms out as if for balance and made a point of not touching anything. He glanced back at the doorway as if to say to Mariana, "see?" He was so focused on these things that he didn't notice the transparent block of protoplasm until it lunged at him. Startled, he had no time to defend himself as the thing tried to engulf him!

Round 1:

Storn failed the first perception check to see the translucent cube in the low light conditions, being focused on the urns.

Storn can choose to make a DC12 reflex save to avoid being engulfed.

Mariana looks at the mess before her and is completely at a loss. Not knowing how to deal with such a thing frustrates her beyond belief and it shows on her face.

Hoping to avoid other's line of attack, Mariana steps into a corner (L4, 5') and draws her dagger, then slashes at the creature from around the corner, hoping to give Storn a better chance of hitting the creature.

"That's not a trap, I'm still right! That's..."

Storn stares at the transparent cube. "I have no idea what that is. I bet I can hit it though! RAAAH!"

Quill, hearing the sounds of combat flesh slapping wet fish, moves to M3.

Quill squints at the ugly blob, then turns his eyes away from Storn to the creature that Storn is fighting with.

"Oh man, what's that!?" Quill gapes while drawing an arrow and firing it dead center.

Vashta wracks her memory, trying to think of a story she's heard that might have mentioned such creatures. One's floating nearby, but she struggles to remember the details.

She steps back five feet, clearing a path for Yelena's expected headlong rush toward death.

Really need to pick up some ranged capability until I have more than two spells in a day...


Yelena rushes around the corner [move to M3]. She brings her hammer high above her head, "RAWR!", and brings it down with righteous dwarven fury.

Ladies and Gents, when you post your actions, try and take into account what the others are doing. i have 3 people all trying to get into M3. It's easy enough to adjust in this case, but if you end up in a square you didn't want, I apologize in advance.

Weapons slashed in at the large jelly-like creature as it plowed forward. Storn flung himself back and landed a good hit, followed immediately by Yelena's longhammer. The bits of jelly splashed outwards from the wounds burned like acid, and a light numbness spread from the impact points. Vashta wracked her brain for more information about the creature, but all she could come up with was that it might be some kind of ooze.

The creature continued its inexorable movement, plowing over both Storn and Quill. The two were forced once more to throw themselves aside or be engulfed by the strange creature.

Round 2:

Storn and Quill can choose to make a DC12 reflex save to avoid being engulfed.

Pinned with nowhere to go, Storn starts just frantically beating on the blob with his greatsword. However, the blob just moves over him, and with a blorp! Storn is engulfed.

"Well, isn't this lovely," Molly grumbles. "Down in front!"

Provided Yelena, Vashta and Quill mind her instruction to duck, Molly sights on the big blob, pulls the trigger on her crossbow and immediately reloads. If not, she curses the others out and awaits her future opportunity to shoot...

Crossbow attack 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10 for 1d8 ⇒ 3 damage.


Storn (and all of his non-metal and non-stone items) takes 1d6 ⇒ 2 acid damage and must pass a DC20 Fort save or be paralyzed for 3d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1) = 8 rounds. Paralyzed or not, Storn is now pinned, and must start holding his breath.

Gritting her teeth as she sees her traveling companions being overwhelmed, Vashta concentrates for a moment, her eyes suddenly glowing with arcane power. She begins chanting, the glow seeming to dissipate from her skin as she does, and suddenly two bolts of brilliant blue light streak from her fingertips toward the cube.

Mariana looks at the situation is deeply concerned. Once again she is at a loss as to what to do and she simply lashes out wildly at the thing, hoping her luck can help her in this.

Then she beats a hasty retreat to the back of the group(L6). "Hit and run! Draw it out if we can..."


Storn struggled in the gelatinous creature, finally breaking his head free. He sucked in a deep breath as his hair and skin sizzled from the creature's acidic innards. Weapons flashed all around the bearded man, and he flinched every time something steel or magical splashed into the creature. The onslaught of weapons and magic was too much for the ooze and it was unable to hold its structure. It collapsed, spreading acidic jelly across most of the stone floors. Storn collapsed onto the stone atop the remains of the creature, his clothing still steaming from a dozen small holes and his skin red as if he had been laying naked in the bright sunlight for several days straight.

Around Storn lay the remains of several items that the ooze was not able to digest, including a steel scrollcase, a masterwork quality chain shirt, a falchion, and a an amulet with some kind of quarts embedded on the outside. There were also quite a few loose coins, totaling 43 gp in all.

"it didn't kill him, did it?" Vashta asks, as she edges toward the scrollcase and amulet, intoning a quick cantrip to see if either is magical.

Mariana checks on their comrade first, seeing if there is anything they can do for his wounds.

Then she turns to the items, as well.

With a few quick words, she takes a few moments to check for magic, then concentrating if she finds any.

If any scrolls lie within the case, she casts Read Magic to see what they are.


The scrollcase itself was plain steel, though it did protect the hold portal scroll inside it from the acidic digestion of the ooze.

Standing near the northern portion of the room, Quill can easily make out the details of a slightly softened statue there. The ooze ahdn't had much effect against most of the rest of the room, but the limestone the staute was made out of didn't fare too well. The statue was of a flaming wheel.

Halfway out of the blob, Storn suddenly crashes to the ground noisily as the blob's structure falls apart. He lets out a low groan as his armour sizzles.

"Gorum be praised. I didn't want to spend out the rest of my life in a blob."

"Storn, you okay?" Quill offers the big man one of his slender dainty elvish mitts to help him up. "That didn't look good."

"That thing was pretty big. What do you think it has been eating, Mariana?"

"Hah, that was an experience. Good job Quill! FIST!"

The enormous Kellid hammers a fist the size of a ham into Quill's back enthusiastically.

"Did I do that right?"

He then looks over to the statue. "Hmph. Weird symbols. Probably some God nobody has heard of."

"Let's take a moment in this room..."

Mariana spends a couple of minutes searching the room with the ooze-thing.

Take 20 on searching the room


Yelena likewise stares blankly at the statue. "It looks religious. I mean, it's a flaming wheel. If it were an arcane statue, it would be far more pretentious, like a bust or some convoluted symbol. Something simple like this is usually used in various churches. Considering we're in Trunau, I'm going to guess Iomedae for protection or Sarenrae because it's on fire."


Examining the door, Quill finds that it is locked. He also notes with interest that the door is sheathed in iron. Double checking, he finds that the door you entered through is also sheathed in iron on the side facing the urn room.

Mariana took the time to further explore the room, finding that the urns that were left were made of metal or fired clay. More interestingly, she found that behind the wagon wheel statue was a door, carefully hidden. (GH/3)

Disable Device: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13 Pulling out her fine tools, she attempts to disable the trap.

After all of the above is taken care of:

Open Lock if locked: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 She continues her work, popping the door with a touch of her skills that don't often get utilized.


Mariana examined the locked door carefully, deciding that there were likely no traps here. With a moment's effort, she finessed the locking mechanism, and stood back.
