Venture-Captain Ambrus Valsin calls you to meet with him in the Grand Lodge in Absalom...

Ah, Falroun, these are the agents I was telling you about, Ambrus Valsin says. Pathfinders, welcome! May I introduce Count Falroun Matsanda of Alkenstar. He gestures across his desk to a tall Garundi man with short black hair and goldrimmed spectacles.

Valsin’s guest stands and offers his hand in greeting as he speaks. It is a true pleasure to meet you. I have purchased several antiquities from your Society in the past, and I have always wondered about the people who acquire such treasures. I must say, you do not disappoint!

Valsin smiles at the compliment before continuing, Agents, your next mission will take you to the island of Jalmeray. We’ve received reports that the ruins of a previously unknown temple have been found in a part of the Segang Jungle known as the Urapangi Lowlands. From its location, I think this temple could be one of those abandoned by the legendary Maharaja Khiben- Sald when he left Jalmeray over four thousand years ago. A temple untouched since Khiben-Sald’s time would be a major find for the Society. Of course, getting to Jalmeray on such short notice poses some difficulties.

I believe that’s where I come in, the count interjects. I’m arranging a hunting expedition to Jalmeray for myself and my new father-in-law, Baron Bomande Rudyahm. Bomande was quite the sportsman in his day. However, some years ago he was wounded during a tiger hunt in the Segang Jungle. He’s been grumbling about getting revenge on the beast for so long that I thought taking him on a trip back to Segang might earn me some credit with the old man.

Ambrus Valsin continues: Falroun has graciously offered to provide transport to and from Jalmeray and to outfit us with everything we need for our journey into the jungle. In exchange, you’re going to help his father-in-law, the baron, with this tiger hunt and make sure he gets the better of the beast this time around, as it were. You’ll have time to discuss the details of the hunt during your voyage to Jalmeray.

A voyage for which I must make some final arrangements, adds Falroun, I’m afraid I must depart. Once again, it is a pleasure to meet you. I look forward to our journey together. With a nod, he exits the room.

As the count’s footsteps recede down the hall, Ambrus Valsin’s smile fades from his face. Ordinarily, the Society would cover the costs of an expedition like this. However, our resources are stretched thin at the moment thanks to our campaigns in Varisia and the Worldwound. Until such time as those ventures pay off, we’re going to have to rely on people like Count Matsanda to cover some of our operating expenses. I’m trusting you with the Society’s reputation on this mission. Fulfill our end of this bargain by helping the baron bag his tiger, and try to make nice with at least one of these nobles. Now, unless you have any questions about this temple, go get your affairs in order. Your ship sails in the morning.

A tall, young Vudrani woman stands listening to the briefing. Most wouldn’t call her beautiful so much as striking, and her dark, ernest eyes follow the two men deferentially—first VC Valsin and then the Count—as each speaks. At nearly six feet, she is tall for a Vudrani woman, with long, well-muscled limbs and shoulders broader than usually seen on human females. Her hands are both folded over the top-end of a well-wrought animal-horn Vudrani longbow that looks to have a pull that would test most men’s strength. The other end of the bow rests on the floor between her dusty traveling boots. Her weapons, equipment, and clothes are all well-made, well-worn, and well-tended.

When the Alkenstarian Count leaves, she bends at the waist in the traditional Vudrani bow, then turns back to listen to the ending of VC Valsin’s briefing.

Will Knowledge (Nobility) help her know anything useful about…
Know (Nobility), Count Falroun: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

At his conclusion, she repeats her bow, this time in a fashion that seems to include the VC as well as the rest of the present pathfinders.

"A thousand blessings," she says. Her low voice is direct but not unpleasant, and her lips quirk in a simple smile, "A visit to Jalmeray for a hunt and some ruins, no? A fitting first test."

A tall, lean half-elf listens intently. He wears his platinum blonde hair long, and it loosely frames his face. His hand rests on his chin as if he is deep in thought, and the hand bears a rough brand of some sort.

He wears no armor, symbol of deity, or implements of magic-use. Instead, he wears the fine, flashy garb of a noble. Aside from a pack resting nearby, his only possession seems to be a finely-crafted blade. This sword appears to be a bit over three feet long and very slightly curved. The half-elf's long limbs and agile build seem well-suited to be a swordsman.

He nods at the instructions. When he speaks, it is with a tone full of hubris.

"This, for once, seems a mission fitting my abilities. I am Erevan Stormstride. I have been taught in the ways of the Aldori school of sword fighting and the techniques taught by Baron Aldori. I assure you I will not back away from any trial. In fact, I challenge this tiger to a duel!" he laughs.

Then, with a serious tone, he responds to their Venture-Captain. "Rest assured...I will not fail you."

We are officially underway! You can purchase anything you want or ask any questions of the VC before departing Absalom.

Raman--you know that Baron Bomande made a name for himself defending Alkenstar from the Gorilla King's forces. You also know the Maharaja Khiben-Sald received the island of Jalmeray as a gift from the archmage Nex. Though Khiben-Sald and his entourage occupied Jalmeray for only a decade, they built dozens of palaces, temples, and monuments on the island with the help of their genie servants. Many of these structures remain in use today, preserved by genie magic or by the care and attention of the island’s inhabitants. Others have fallen into disrepair or been swallowed by the island’s jungles.

Erevan, you know the same about Bomande and that Khiben-Sald built many palaces, temples, and monuments on Jalmeray

Forgot to mention, but Erevan, the count would laugh if you say you'll challenge the tiger to a duel. ;-)

Let me know if there's anything you need before getting on the count's ship. Otherwise...

The count’s ship departs from Absalom on the morning after the briefing, and you can purchase any equipment you wish before leaving. Once aboard, you are introduced to Baron Bomande Rudyahm, a handsome, dark-skinned Garundi gentleman of advancing years, with a thick black mustache and graying hair at his temples. He walks with a prominent limp, and carries a
finely crafted walking cane to help him amble about. The baron invites you to dinner the first night of the voyage.

When you sit down to eat, the baron says: Welcome! So, have any of you ever been to Jalmeray before?

The baron responds with a good-natured smile to Faellynn and Sahba's concerns about the ship: After a few days in the jungle, you might change your mind.

When the subject shifts to adventurers and adventures, her focus remains on the old man. ”Adventurers we may be, but who among us can say they fought off the Gorilla King’s forces in Alkenstar?” She nods at his cane, ”I’ll bet you have a few lessons you could teach us alongside your war scars and battle tales, no?”

At one point is the narrative, the half-elf swordsman draws his fine blade, and demonstrates a move he used to strike at the heart of one of the restless souls they encountered in the Half-Dead City. Erevan appears quite adept with his dueling blade...and makes the fact very clear.

The dwarf woman sits quietly as she listens to the Count and Venture Captain explain their situation.

After hearing the others introduce themselves Febida raises her voice to be heard. "I am Febida Stonehair. I ha--Oh hi guys!" She had been paying so much attention to the Count and Captain that she didn't notice Wilm and Sahba. "Good to see you guys again!"

She regains her focus and restates herself. "I am Febida Stonehair. Warpriestess of Torag and Pathfinder Agent. I haven't had much experience in the field. Of the two missions I've been assigned, I assisted with exploring a fallen fortress and traveled on the Throaty Mermaid with Sagha and Wilm. It was...not my favorite expedition."

Hmm, I posted something yesterday and it got erased. Oh well, what I said was that Bomande isn't really old--sorry if I gave that impression. He's middle-aged and handsome.

The baron smiles at Raman's flattery.

The Gorilla King is every bit as ruthless as you've heard, and probably more cunning. He knew of our weapons but still led the charge against our defenses. The only thing louder than the sound of our guns was the drumming and screaming of his warriors.

At her mentioning lessons he could teach, the baron takes his fork and pokes himself in the center of his chest in between bites of food.

Aim for big targets. When it's a matter of life and death, victory can be lost or won by inches. Aim for an eye, you may miss entirely. Aim for the heart, you still might take down your prey.

The baron seems genuinely pleased to hear of your exploits, nodding at Erevan's swordplay. He points to his own blade, a large curved knife in his belt I usually only draw this for skinning, after the killing is done. But a good blade is more reliable than a musket, that's for sure.

Count Matsanda listens to your tales with great interest, ignoring his food and leaning forward in his chair at every word. Now and then he glances at the baron and, seeing the older man enjoying himself, the count smiles all the more.

If there is anything else you'd like to do or say now or on the ship, let me know. Once we get 3 votes to move along I'll post the next scene. Also, let me know if there is anything you're going to want to purchase specifically to help you in the jungle. Gamer Please read the announcements!

Very well. Sorry, I was out of the house most of today or I would've posted sooner.

Your first stop in Segang is at a local hunting lodge, where Count Matsanda hires an elephant, a mahout (elephant driver), and a dozen porters. The elephant seems well past its prime, but it’s the only suitable mount available at the lodge, so Matsanda takes it. You can also purchase mundane survival gear if they wish, or they may ask around the hunting lodge to learn recent rumors.

For the following roll one check and view all spoilers whose difficulty you beat

Diplomacy (gather info) or Knowledge (Local) 10+:
Hunters at the lodge corroborate the baron’s story about his previous expedition and report that several other hunting parties have also gone missing in that part of the jungle. You guys didn’t ask him about it in detail, but recall that his last hunting party in Segang resulted in a tiger killing several of his companions, wounding his leg, and him shooting the beast

Diplomacy (gather info) or Knowledge (Local) 15+:
The Urapangi Lowlands are also known as “the monkey swamp,” and particularly devout Vudrani claim that the monkeys who reside there possess mystical powers.

Diplomacy (gather info) or Knowledge (Local) 20+:
Though Pathfinder Society agents have tried to keep the location of the Urapangi temple under wraps, rumor has it that several independent groups are currently planning their own expeditions to find the lost temple.

The Segang Jungle is a dense tropical forest. The deciduous trees that comprise it are green all year round thanks to the wet coastal climate. You reach Jalmeray at the height of its warmer season, and the air is hot and sticky under the jungle canopy. Unless otherwise specified, the hunting trail is just wide enough to accommodate the passage of an elephant (15 feet), and the areas of underbrush on either side of the trail count as difficult terrain. Count Matsanda and Baron Rudyahm ride in a howdah on the elephant’s back, accompanied by their mahout. The howdah is an elaborate wooden affair that can hold three occupants and one driver.

Game is scarce on the first day of the safari. The baron explains that animals are skittish this close to the hunting lodge, and the real trophies are to be found deeper in the jungle. At the end of the first day the hunting party sets up camp in a clearing atop a low rise. The night passes uneventfully.

From here on out I will require three fort saves vs the heat during the day. Hot weather gear helps with this, as does anyone who can make a DC 15 survival check: Gain a +2 bonus on all Fortitude saves against severe weather while moving up to half your overland speed. You may grant the same bonus to one other character for every 1 point by which your Survival check result exceeds 15.

Early in the morning, you hear a loud crash coming from the count’s tent. Assuming you investigate…

The interior of this spacious canvas tent is richly decorated with portable darkwood and silver furnishings. Torn mosquito netting hangs above the bed, and a mirror, basin, and various shaving implements lie scattered on the ground. A black leather boot lies on the floor next to the crumpled remains of a large black spider.

Baron Rudyahm reaches the tent just ahead of you. What the devil happened in here? he asks as he enters. Inside, you see Count Matsanda lying on the bed clutching his bare right foot in pain. The count replies in a fearful voice, Something in my boot bit me—a spider I think. I fell back onto the bed in surprise. My god, Bomande, what if it’s poisonous? I could lose the foot! You brought some antitoxin, didn’t you? Fetch it quickly!

Unfazed, the baron replies, Ah, bit of luck then. The spiders of Segang aren’t dangerous, not like the scorpions. It’ll probably smart for a bit, that’s all. Next time, check your damn boots!

Count Matsanda is not assured by the promises of his father-in-law, and the two men begin to argue. Both nobles look to you for support in this matter.
Please, help me! I need that antitoxin--better to be safe than sorry, right? the baron whines fearfully.

Yes, I have some, but it'd be just as useful pouring on the path for good luck...

What do you do? The spider, dead, is on the floor of the tent. And the count rubs his bare foot tenderly.

Count, i can see that you're in pain and scared. What would you need to feel assured that the Baron is right about Spiders here not being poisonous? Isn't it the case that he's been on dozens of expeditions here in the past, wouldn't it be reasonable to believe his judgement?

For a minute their I thought you were having your wolf make diplomacy checks, lol

The baron nods as you plead your case. Yes, what could I possibly know about the species in this place? he asks sarcastically, with his animosity directed toward the count.

A look of doubt flashes across the count's face, but he still looks at the wound fearfully.

When she hears the crashing and learns of the danger that the count was in, she offers her hand at first aid.

my bad. Let's just ignore Raman's first block of speech and direct the second at the Count, instead. I'd want her to try the same thing ... aiding Wilm's Diplomacy attempt to calm the situation (and the Count).

As the group tries to restore some calm, Raman stoops down with Febida to look at the bite.

Heal, DC 15: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12; I agree, Doctor Febida. I'll get the hatchet and the gauze.

If we have several people who are unskilled in heal or knowledge nature, they can roll AA to aid your heal roll. You'd only need two aids. I didn't mention, but you get a -4 to those saves if you have heavy clothing or any type of armor on. :-/ Hey, it's a sweltering jungle. The adventure doesn't call for the heat rolls, but the PFS rules state that I can add them if I want. Let me know if you guys are getting annoyed by being hit with heat stroke and I can always take it out. Just thought it would be more fun to portray this as a sweltering, dangerous place. Give it a different feel than the friggin' Blakros Museum.

I tried to post this quoted post while you were posting, Raman, so I missed it. Hard to concentrate when my son is throwing an irrational tantrum, lol. Anyway, take Raman's heal as an AA toward Febida. So she's sitting at a 13.

Since Faellyn had made the survival check to know about the clothing, I'd like to pick up a set before we came, if possible. If we're now too late for that retcon, let me know...I'd then have bonuses to these checks.

Erevan seems too exhausted by the heat to contribute much.

"These are no conditions for men to live in!" he complains. Addressing Matsanda, he says "Maybe just wait a few minutes and see what happens. If you pass out, we'll administer the antitoxin."

The swordsman seems of little help.

fort save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 Ouch! A 1 and a 2!
fort save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
fort save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

so that's us upto the dc 15 heal check. I'll let febida say something as she's the primary. looks like we're going to have more fun and games with these two not playing nice...

Trusting the Baron is as good as his word, Sahba steps out of sight. While no one is looking, she mixes some chalk dust and water to make a paste.

"Here, Count," she says, returning to the room. "This is a secret family salve for healing the all but the direst of insect stings. It is my last portion, but I trust it will ease your pain."

SM count: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Last dose of your healing salve, and you waste it on this? Absurd.

The baron rolls his eyes, while the count has genuine relief on his face.

Then...I'll be alright?

He exhales deeply.

I'll give a chance for Febida to post about her successful heal result before we move on. Febida said sometimes she doesn't have access, so if she hasn't posted in 6 hours or so we'll let Raman or Wilm post since they're all examining his foot together.

Sure, go for it. You might want to consider sleeves of many garments, which cost 200 gp and can change your clothes into any mundane set of clothes. Awesome. One thing--if you only have the CRB, you are only allowed to use that material for your PFS character. So if you want to learn a spell from a different source, for example, you either need to buy a physical copy of the book the spell appears in, or purchase the pdf (which will have your name on it). If you only want to use CRB, you can make a Core PFS character and play core-only games with him/her.

I'm going to buy those sleeves if that's okay before we start, then. I would add the bonus to my rolls above, though I am sure a 1 and 2 still fail!

I retrained my spells already, as the ones I had last adventure weren't as useful as I'd hoped. The new ones are already core.
What reference is sleeves from?
