Kazzak shrugs off the debilitating effects of the ooze's paralytic goo and the would-be Pathfinders continue on. As you reach the eastern end of this area, you notice a faint light at the end of the tunnel--reflected moonlight. Also, the sound of Janira’s oration is close and clear. Her words are still defiant, but her breathing is labored.

Without too much more effort, you reach the surface. The light of the surface world above provides a welcome reprieve from the blue and green fungus of the caverns below, and light illuminates a stream whose water is hastened by runoff from a recent storm further up the mountains. A ledge to the west rises up to the nearby forest canopy.

You emerge from the caverns into a 40-foot clearing at the base of the Kortos Mounts. The full moon above casts dim light over the entire area, bright enough to illuminate even the shaded leaf litter beneath the trees. These patches of woodland are also filled with underbrush that behaves as light undergrowth(difficult terrain and concealment).

The trees are only a few decades old and do not completely occupy their respective squares. (A creature that shares a space with one or more trees benefits from partial cover.)

The stream is about 10 feet wide and 5 feet deep in this area, and the water moves downstream from east to west at a decent pace. Rough water, DC 15 Swim check to navigate.

A 3-foot-diameter tree truck spans the width of the river, creating an impromptu bridge. The trunk is slippery from the splashing water. (Crossing it at half speed requires a successful DC 7 Acrobatics check, during which time the creature is treated as flatfooted for moving on a narrow surface.

The slope to the west gradually rises to a height of 20 feet, and creatures standing at its highest point benefit from a commanding view of the battlefield.

Nearly 100 feet from the cave’s entrance, Janira Gavix is locked in combat with her relentless minotaur foe in a clearing on the southern bank of the stream. The creature’s greataxe is nowhere to be seen. Instead he wields a battleaxe that is chipped on the blade and splintered on the haft, but he presses the halfing viciously. She is severely wounded and tired from her efforts, but still Janira faces the towering foe. She shouts: You vile beast! I know not what drives your black heart, but I shall not fail in my duty. I shall see you driven from this forest, back to the hills from whence you came!

The brave halfling steps back and cracks her whip at the bull man's axe, trying to wrench it from his grasp, but he is too strong.

Guys, note that there is a LOT going on here with terrain. Those black marks in the green squares are small trees. There's going to be a lot of difficult terrain, cover, and concealment (it's only dim light outside as well). I linked most of the terrain things above to the SRD to help you. "Janira, hold on!" shouts Aznive as she sprints towards the river. She tries to distract the hulking beast looming over their halfling guide. "Hey, you! Why don't you pick on someone your own size? Or at least, slightly more your own size..."

Aznive makes her way through the underbrush, hoping for a clearing close to the river so that she can make a running start to jump over it. As she takes a moment to gauge her distance, she thinks of something and looks back. "Can anyone provide some light? Otherwise I'll get one of the sunrods from my backpack. I have a free hand to wield it, but it'll cost me time to dig it out."

Double move. Six squares of normal terrain, then three squares of difficult terrain.

Spurred on by the sight of the dying woman, Aznive works her way through the underbrush. She take a few paces on the river banks to pick up pace and launches herself to the other side.

When she makes it to the other side, Aznive tries to make eye contact with the hulking monster. She flips him the finger and then beckons him over. She then carefully retreats next to one of the young trees, hoping she's done enough to draw his attention and taunt him into an attack. Come here, ugly. Give the others some room to help Janira... She stands with her rapier lowered, poised to jump out of the way if the minotaur's battleaxe swings her way.

If I am attacked, I will pay a point of panache and activate 'Dodging panache'. This will allow me to step back 5 feet and grants me a +2 dodge bonus to AC. The attack is still considered to happen at my original location.

Kazzak, I may have missed it against the ooze, but just so you know you need to make a Handle Animal check each time you order Puss to use a trick. So you'd need one for attack, one for tangling attack, and one for rattling strike. No need for concealment roll due to Nikolai's sunrod.

Faust throws a bomb, setting the large monster alight. As the flames burn the creature's fur, Nikolai throws his sunrod right next to the creature, illuminating the area for everyone. circle on the map

The minotaur roars and swings furiously at the only enemy it can reach--the fearless cat. It is a strange sight, but the cat dodges the axe and horns easily.

Seeing Puss fight bracvely makes Kazzak a very proud kitty owner and thus he decides that saving the life of the valiant Gnome lady might be worth his time after all.

Aznive looks annoyed that her ruse did not work. It only cost her precious time, standing in the bush by herself. She makes her way to the minotaur, but the undergrowth that was supposed to gives her some cover only hinder herself now, preventing her from entering the fray.

On the approach, she draws a dagger and throws it in the monster's back, hoping that she hits some vital organ. She reckons that the monster is a pretty big target, and the chance to hit one of her allies is minimal.

Attack, thrown dagger: +1 IC: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 1 = 15
Damage +1 IC: 1d4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 1 = 6

Move while drawing a dagger. Two squares through difficult terrein. Then a ranged attack. No penalty for firing into melee, because I can target a part of the monster that's at least 10 feet away from the nearest ally.

Aznive, in case you were wondering, the minotaur couldn't respond to your taunting and attack you because his movement was cut in half due to being entangled. ;-)

A flurry of attacks from Kazzak, Puss, and Aznive bring the minotaur crashing to the ground like an enormous tree.

Janira lies prone nearby, unconscious but shallowly breathing.

Assuming you heal her...

Janira thanks you for your help, and congratulates you on your victory. She rises slowly, and says: So, what did you find?

Once the PCs have finished their exploration of the cave, Janira leads the expedition back to Absalom without further incident. Once safely back in the Grand Lodge, Master of Scrolls Kreighton Shaine inquires excitedly about what the PCs found and asks to see their notes. He compliments those who recorded notes for being certain to write down ideas and observations while the thoughts are fresh, observing that it’s difficult enough to remember what one had for breakfast the day
before as it is to recall exactly what one was thinking while studying an inscription. As the PCs are now the foremost authorities on that cave and what it contains, Shaine also invites them to come up with its name. The elf is certain to compliment Janira for her guidance and assistance, much to the halfling’s delight.

Three days later, the Master who best represents each PC’s interests confirms that PCs as a full Pathfinder field agent. As part of the ceremony, that mentor also gifts a personalized wayfinder to the PC, reminding him or her that this is not only the symbol of the Pathfinder’s trade but also a reminder of the three principle duties: explore,report, and cooperate.

Well done, guys! You worked together as a team and got the job done! Thanks, I had a lot of fun!

Well done, everyone! This went better than my first run, where the minotaur critted Janira. We were wiping up bard bits to take back to the Society after that.

When the minotaur falls, Nikolai breathes a sigh of relief, and begins slowly making his way to the other side of the river. "You're made of tough stuff, Pint-sized. Good to know you've got our backs." He reaches down to help her up, and lets someone else who actually understands most of what happened in the caves describe what happened.

"Name the caves?", he says, taken a bit aback at the Master of Scrolls' suggestion. "Hrm, I'm not sure. Dead God's Cave, maybe?"

With the monster felled, Aznive turns her attentions to Janira along with the rest of her companions. When she's back on her feet, Aznive tries to give a brief recap of their adventures.

"The gillmen come here to pay their respects to Aroden. There's something about the moon and the tide, that make it a good time for them to come here. Inside there are carvings of Aroden's teachings and it seems a small part of His powers have been left in the cave, linked to a diorama of the city of Absalom. We met one of the gillman, he helped us pay tribute to Aroden and we felt His blessing upon us.
There was also a Dhampir corpse along with some gillman zombies. There was a note hinting at a plot to turn all of the gillmen coming here into an undead army. That's when we heard your cries of battle against the minotaur. We'll probably have to go back some time to learn more. Or maybe a next group of recruits can find out on their Confirmation."
Aznive retrieves her dagger from the minotaur's back, helps Janira back on her feet and walks alongside her back to the city.

Aznive nods at Nikolai's suggestion for naming the place they explored. "I think it's an excellent suggestion, but it sounds a bit crude: Dead God..." She gives Nikolai a good-natures smile, hoping he'll take it in the spirit the comment was meant. "How about Aroden's Rest?"

Ooh, Dead God's Cove would have been MUCH better! Then again, Nikolai's from Kaer Maga, not Riddleport, so it's not like he's especially piratical.
