The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.

The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.

Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat! With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.

But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix, he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist.

Shaine continues, saying, Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.

Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.

Master Shaine hops to his feet. Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well. With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

So Miss Janira do we need to make any special preparations for the upcoming journey?

Right to business, huh? I respect that! After all, the most important factors that determine whether an expedition will be a success are cooperation and preparation! You'll need a good pair of walking shoes as we have a bit of a trek ahead of us. Also, the forest at this time of year has all manner of crawling things, insects, vermin, you name it. Any method of dealing with swarms should be useful.

Janira pulls out a large leather-bound journal and opens it on the table. “Before we set out, we should all get to know each other and review our plan. I’ll go first!”

I am Janira Gavix, pleased to meet your acquaintance! I’m from right here in Eastgate, born and raised. Four years ago I joined the Society, mostly to travel and taste all the wonderful food the world has to offer, she pats her stomach and smiles wistfully before continuing. But I’ve come a long way in four years and learned that our mission is far more important. There is much to be discovered in the world and I hope to one day contribute a small piece of the vast body of knowledge that the Pathfinder Chronicles describe. So, what brought all of you here?

The diminutive woman leans forward in her chair to observe your reactions, smiling encouragingly.

Here is some background knowledge you may already know. Results are cumulative, so read all difficulties that you beat (only one roll required for each skill)

Knowledge Geography DC 10+:

At the center of the Isle of Kortos stand the Kortos Mounts, the points on the island.

Knowledge Geography DC 15+:

Above spoiler, plus: Entire tribes of centaurs, harpies, and minotaurs constantly vie for territory up and around the Mounts, with harpies being the most common at higher altitudes and centaurs controlling the lower slopes and foothills.

Knowledge History DC 15+:

Also known as the Low Azlanti, the gillmen are an amphibious humanoid race believed to be the last descendants of the ancient Azlanti people.

Knowledge History DC 20+:

Above spoiler, plus: During Earthfall, the Starstone struck Golarion and destroyed the human empires of Thassilon and Azlant. It is said that gillmen’s ancestors survived the cataclysmic event because they received the blessing of an aquatic entity that allowed them to breath underwater.

Knowledge History DC 25+:

Above 2 spoilers, plus: Most scholars believe the terrifying aboleths were responsible for the gillmen’s transformation. Any alliance between them appears to have fallen apart over the millennia, however, and the gillmen are now an independent people.

A man rises from his chair as Janira addresses the group. He coughs softly before speaking to the others. Though he appears to be fit and even muscular, his skin has an ashen cast to it, and he does not appear to be well. He carries the flasks, beakers, and chemicals of an alchemist at his waist, though his hands shake slightly.

"I am Professor Leoric Faust. It is a pleasure to meet all of you. I am adept with creating alchemical extracts, potions, etc. I am sure we will accomplish this mission," he adds.

A young woman in a stylish green coat observes the others quietly as they make their introductions, studying their words and mannerism. She has the fine features of Taldan nobility, but her attitude is quite relaxed and her hair is tied in a practical and loose knot, quite unlike the wigs that are in style in Taldor.

Her voice trails off as Aznive seems to consider her words. "The nations of the Inner Sea are in turmoil. I'd like to do what I can to bring some stability to these lands, wherever my assignments might take me." She looks around the group, trying to sense whether her words resonate with anyone. "I am honored to have my Confirmation with you, and will do my utmost to make my mentors proud."

"It would be my pleasure," he says. "I am on sabbatical from the university, and already miss teaching my students. Perhaps on this journey I can show you how chemicals can quickly heal any wound, or how to enlarge the human form without causing permanent damage or death."

He also greets RumbleRock. Fascinating! I have never seen one of his kind before!

Ah! A teacher and student! You remind me of myself and Master Shaine! I look forward to us all learning a great deal on your Confirmation!

She leans forward and pats Nikolai and Seleena on the arm: Strong silent types, huh? Excellent—sometimes it’s best to be introspective to see a problem in a different light. Welcome!

Now then, on to the details of the mission at hand, Janira says with an eager grin.

After reviewing my mission reports personally, Master Shaine believes it is no coincidence that each time they entered the caves it was during a full moon, so it is also no coincidence that you have been called here now, just a day before the moon is full again. We both believe that tomorrow night is our best chance to find out why these caves are important and what exactly the gillmen are doing in there.

The caves we’ll be travelling to lie under the base of the Kortos Mounts. We’ll need to spend every minute of daylight possible to reach the caves by foot, crossing over the Cairnlands, taking the paths to Diobel, and finally making our way through the wilderness. With any luck we won’t run into any of the local inhabitants. Once in the caves, we’ll need to work together to explore and determine whether any gillman are present or have been recently. Keep an eye out for any other clues that might hint at the caves’ significance, too.

Any questions?

It is a very strange thing indeed for a Gillman to trek overland to reach these caverns, and a lone Gillman at that! This is why you've been chosen to determine the cause of these treks for your Confirmation. The only known permanent surface settlement of the gillmen is in Escadar. Why

they’re venturing into the foothills of the Kortos Mounts is a mystery.

Seleena sits quietly at a table, idly running her fingers over the tip of her Longbow. She is rather unattractive. Her figure is strikingly ill-proportioned, with a neck that is too thick for her small head, shoulders that slope down at a an unusual angle, and a rather atrocious stooping posture. Meanwhile, greenish skin hints at her parentage.

When directly addressed, she turns her large eyes to the speaker to gaze at them intently, but says nothing unless asked her name, which she gives freely.

As the others indicate they are ready to move, she wordlessly stands and walks to the door with movements that are surprisingly graceful coming from her awkward proportions.

Very well, Janira says, stowing her book. We have time to make purchases if anyone is in need. Rope is always useful, some food and water, and of course, a sharp blade and a good pair of boots.

She then reaches into her backpack and produces several sheets of parchment, handing them out to each of you in turn..

Remember how important it is to report our findings. You should take notes of your explorations as best as you can...

There is a player handout “Pathfinder’s Journal” that is essentially a blank sheet of paper. Since this is a PbP, I will instead encourage you to keep your notes in a spoiler on your character’s profile. You now have time to purchase any last-minute gear you need, but I'm going to roll along to the next scene.

Satisfied with your introductions and preparations, Janira leads you all west out of Absalom and through the Cairnlands, picking up any last-minute purchases on the way out of the city.

The party travels through Absalom and across the Cairnlands, along a well-worn path that leads toward Diobel, and through the wilderness surrounding the Kortos Mounts. The journey through the City at the Center of the World is swift and without incident, and the long trek across the Cairnlands provides a great opportunity to discuss Master Shane’s class on the history of Absalom. Most of the journey is uneventful, with Janira pointing out landmarks such as siege towers, distant mountains, or distinct flora and fauna along the journey. After setting a rotating watch and camping in the wilderness through a night filled with familiar outdoor sounds (but no other incidents), you continue your travels on the second day.

As the party progresses deeper into the forest, the trees towering overhead begin to shield most of what remains of the day’s sun and the vegetation beneath grows denser.

Janira pauses a moment and pulls out an intricate silver compass emblazoned with the Pathfinder Society logo: the Glyph of the Open Road. I received this wayfinder when I successfully completed my Confirmation. Should we be successful on our journey, you will get your own as well.

She flips open the device and holds it in front of her; the initials J. L. are engraved into the inside of the device’s lid. After studying the compass inside for a moment, she remarks, We’re on the right path. We need to keep heading northwest past those large rocks up ahead.

Most of the trees in this section of the forest have trunks that are too big for any creatures to share their space. Sporadic patches of light undergrowth provide areas for creatures to hide while restricting movement for those passing through. A large rock outcropping to the east rises nearly 20 feet above the forest floor, and a small sinkhole to the northwest drops off sharply, descending to the ground 10 feet below.

Suddenly, a tree falls nearby and two roiling masses of spiders move toward your position!

Aznive is not really an outdoors type, but seems to be coping fairly well. When they set up camp for the night, she makes a few short notes on the parchment she was given. After that, she tries to strike up a conversation with the professor, trying in particular to find out whether he knows something about gunpowder.
I'll leave it at that, for flavor.

When the spiders show up, Aznive misjudges the situation at first. Yuk, a couple of spiders. Hmm, maybe I could try to skewer one of them. Might be a challenge, see if I'm fast enough. When more and more spiders keep showing up, she decides it's time for more drastic measures. She repositions away from the group and retrieves a flask of alchemist's fire from her backback. She waits for the spiders to come a bit closer and then hurls the flask at the mass of crawling vermin.

5-step, move action to retrieve the flask. Ready standard action to throw as soon as the northern-most swarm gets within 20 ft.

Crap, I hadn't noticed this had started! Sorry!!!

Nikolai has remained mostly silent this entire time, as he's been of two minds ever since the discovery of the documents beneath the Wounded Wisp. On one hand, he's finally getting the opportunity to become a full-fledged Pathfinder, with all the benefits and prestige that comes with that organization. He always thought it would be far more difficult for the Sczarni to find him if he were always moving around the Inner Sea, but he hadn't realized that the Sczarni already had their fingers into the Society. Out of the fire, he thought.

A shout from their guide roused him from his reverie, and he saw the roiling blanket of spiders rushing towards them. "Oh, sod that!", he shouted, reaching into his belt pouch to produce a flask of alchemical fire. "Kill 'em with fire!", he says, taking a similar tactic to Aznive. Unlike, Aznive, the flask falls from his hand, and with a loud curse in Varisian he jumps away as the flask shatters, setting a bit of his greaves on fire.

I took a 5' step to the south, and I'll be tossing my alchemical fire flask at the southern swarm.

Rumble, you can delay until after the spiders, in which case the spiders get to take their entire turn before you do. Or you can ready action to throw when they get within 10 ft, but you can only ready that standard action and not move afterwards. I'm assuming you want to do the latter, so I'm taking your roll as a ready action.

Nikolai--you could have been in the same range increment and aimed at one of the back squares of the spider, so let's just say that. You miss, but it saves you a hit point.

Faust, that's a few range increments away, so that's a bad miss. ;-)

Some of the would-be Pathfinders prepare their concoctions in the face of danger, while Nikolai and the good professor miss their marks considerably, thankfully not injuring any of their allies in the process.

The spiders are moving quick, and difficult to discern when they move as one. Aim for a spot on the ground and throw your weapons there! Janira encouragingly offers to the others.

You can target a square with a splash weapon and you only need to hit AC 5. Not great for most of you, but pretty good with Prof. Faust who can deal more splash damage as an alchemist (and more again on top of that due to their swarm traits).

Sorry should have posted earlier. Farg didn't do his PFS homework and has no way of dealing with swarms...

Frg curses as the vermin approach but the large half orc has nothing to fight them with.

Gamer Please read the announcements!

I think Farg is one of your other characters. Kazzak is with us. ;-)

Kazzak, get over here, I can help you! Janira yells, seeing Kazzak standing there lost.

I'm going to assume you listen and move next to her instead of standing there and wait to be spider food, so I'm moving your token.

So here's the thing, the SRD says the spider swarm has a touch AC of 17 because they have a +4 size bonus. Maybe I shouldn't go away from RAW in PFS, but just because the spiders are diminutive, the whole swarm shouldn't get a +4 size bonus because it is large. It's moot now because of Janira's Gallant Inspiration, just wanted to say I think that's dumb.

When the northernmost swarm advances, Aznive throws a vial of alchemist's fire at it, missing the center of the mass but scorching a few along the periphery. (1 damage + 1 for IC) x 1.5 = 3 fire damage)

Rumble waits until the creatures get a little closer and his patience pays off. With a supportive shout from Janira, Rumble's alchemical bomb lands square in the middle of the horde, exploding into a conflagration of charred arachnids. The few remaining live ones scurry off into the forest while the large pile of dead ones continue to burn. 6 fire kills the swarm

Janira uses Gallant Inspiration to make that a hit

Seleena calmly works toward making her own bomb as the remaining swarm scuttles towards the group, washing over Nikolai like a disgusting tide.

GM stuff:

Nikolai, you take 1 damage from the swarm. You must make a Fort Save DC 11 or you are nauseated for one round (can only take a move action this round) and you must make a Fort Save DC 11 or succumb to their poison. Please make the nausea save first so we can see if you get full actions or just one.

Janira continues her inspiring words as she reaches into her pack and pulls out a vial, handing it to Kazzak.

Here you go, acid. C'mon, I know you can do it, Pathfinder!

Next up: Everyone

Seleena takes a step closer to the spider swarm and hurls her makeshift flask at the spiders. The flask breaks, spilling oil everywhere, but the fuse does not ignite.

Rumble moves 20' away from the swarm as his swarm fighting solutions were exhausted. He might have to run for it, if the others didn't have more acid.

Seleena takes aim and misses the swarm, but thankfully her makeshift bomb doesn't detonate. Rumble backs away, ready to run.

Hey that's awefully nice of you... Kazzak, who never in his life has done anything nice for anybody else, replies to Janira and chucks the flask with all his might.

Aznive mutters a curse under her breath when she sees so many vials thrown wide, and her own vial only barely hitting some spiders. "Are you sure that we're ready for our Conformation, Janira?" she quips with a bit of frustration at her own performance. "We all seem to have skipped the class on throwing things."

Things look up with the well-aimed attack from Rumble, and Aznive looks at her left to the other group of spiders. Oh, dear... She start rummaging in her backpack, looking for something else that might help. After a few seconds, she pulls out a torch and her flint and steel.

Lighting the torch is a full-round action, so that's it for me for this round.

Nikolai's eyes widen as the flames only seem to draw the spider swarm closer to him. "Oh, bugger," he says to himself as they roll over him, like a writhing carpet of tiny hairy legs and fangs. "Oh gods!", he shouts as they begin sinking their fangs into his flesh. "They're in my pants! THEY'RE IN MY PANTS!!!" He rushes from the swarm, swatting at his trousers and feeling several spiders squish as he does.

Just moving this round.

Gamer Please read the announcements!

Nikolai backs away, disgusted by the spiders. We'll say this happens before Kazzak throws the acid, lol.

Kazzak throws an excellent shot into the heart of the swarm, horribly dissolving many of their number. 7 acid damage

Aznive lights a torch to stave off the spiders.

Funny story - I once ran this mod with my deaf stone oracle, so Janira's bonuses did nothing for him.

Professor Faust frowns as his first flask misses badly. He pours a few drops of varying chemicals into a flask to prepare a second. This time, he aims at the creatures directly to his west, concentrates, and then throws.

His flask flies at the spiders before him, then he moves backward to escape their advance. targeting the lower right square of the spider swarm

Professor Faust aims his bomb this time at the ground instead of the mass itself. The flames cook the majority of the remaining spiders and a couple run off to safety. 4 fire damage--combat over!

Well done, well done! That was a serious first test for your Confirmation, and you survived it...mostly intact.

With a word Janira casts a spell and heals Nikolai's spider bites. CLW to heal 1 HP

The guide then shoulders her backpack, and addresses you all again: If everyone is ready, then we should keep moving in order to reach the caves by dusk. If we don't arrive by nightfall, I fear we will miss our gillman.

Feel free to post any RP conversations you would like to have, but when you are all ready to leave...

As the group continues to travel through the wilderness, you find trails blocked by fallen objects, shortcuts overgrown, and other minor delays that cost you time on your journey.

Nikolai spends several minutes shaking his legs, shuddering as what feels like a nestful of spiders tumble out from his breeches. "Ugh, I'm going to have nightmares about this, I can tell already." He shudders at the thought, though the healing does help ameliorate the horrible experience.

Survival: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10

Despite having grown up on the rooftops of Kaer Maga, Nikolai finds the interior of the Isle of Kortos far less forgiving. At one point, he sees a small growth of fallen trees and begins hopping over it, only to find that the wood had rotted inside and refuses to hold his weight. A few more Varisian curses issue forth as he tumbles to the ground, and it's clear that the rest of the Pathfinders will have a selective training in that language, should things continue in this vein.

Seleena keeps quiet as the group moves on. After they reach more difficult terrain, she quietly suggests to Janira "We might have more luck if we go that way, instead of staying on this path."

Gamer Please read the announcements!

Seleena's keen senses provide her with the intuition needed to guide the group through the forest.

After awhile the dense forest opens to a wide clearing at the base of a sheer cliff. Thick vines cover the surface of the cliff stretching 30 feet overhead.

Here! The cave entrance is behind those vines Janira says with a broad smile as she walks to the cliff’s face. She pulls back several layers of vegetation to reveal a narrow crack in the cliff’s surface.

This is where I saw the gillmen enter.

As she motions toward the aperture, the surrounding woods come alive with the sound of small animals fleeing some unseen danger and a large creature crashing through the undergrowth.

The halfling worriedly remarks, Quick, take cover before whatever it is spots us!

As if she’d summoned the creature with her words, a massive horned monstrosity emerges from the trees. Standing eight feet tall on a pair of cloven hooves and wielding a tremendous axe, the bull-headed creature roars with unbridled anger when it spots the group.

Wisely assessing that a minotaur is beyond her charges' capabilities, Janira screams, A minotaur! There’s little chance we can stand against it. Take this bag, she continues, pulling off her backpack, and head deeper into the caves. Finish your mission. I’ll lead it away from the caves, lose it in the forest, and join you as soon as I can. Now go! GO!

She heaves her backpack into the cave, casts a spell, and darts off toward the minotaur before turning to lure it away.

The cave entrance is only 5 feet wide and extends 20 feet into the rock before widening into a broader tunnel.

Survival DC 15:

There are several footprints in the soil left by a web-toed humanoid who traveled this way only hours before.

Spellcraft DC 16:

Aznive is glad to follow the others' directions during the trek through the wild. Since most of her companions don't seem overly talkative, she strikes up a bit of conversation with Janira, hoping to find out a bit more about the Society's political landscape.

When the hooved monstrosity comes crashing in, Aznive springs into action. She puts a hand on Rumble's shoulder, urging him into the cavern. "Come on, hurry. Janira looks like she knows what she's doing. She has her work, we have ours."

When she's safely inside the cavern (oblivious of any tracks that might be there), she takes a moment to let her eyes adjust to the darkness. "Seems like we're going to need torches in here."
